What Umpires Must Worry About
At Central Springfield, safety of the children is the priority. Every CS umpire must be on the lookout for safety violations, not only during games, but even before and after. Some of the things you must look for:
1. Make sure the equipment is safe to use. Don't allow damaged bats, helmets, masks, and other gear on the field.
2. Enforce the catcher wearing a helmet/mask and cup (if male) at all times!
3. Don't let batters or runners remove batting helmets until they are in the dugout.
4. Don't let children swing bats when others are present during pre-game warmups.
5. Watch for unsafe situations during between-inning warmups.
As umpires, you are league officials, so you are within your rights to stop an unsafe act. Let's make sure nobody gets hurt unnecessarily out there!
LL's ASAP Newsletters
Here is the LL website that contains all of their "A Safety Awareness Program" (ASAP) newsletters. There is a lot of good information in these from an umpiring perspective, such as game safety rules and what to do when an unsafe situation occurs at a game site. Check it out!
