CUSC Arsenal: Welcome

CUSC Arsenal is a U15 select travel soccer team formed in the Summer of 2003 that plays in the Virginia Soccer League Incorporated (VSLI). CUSC Arsenal is part of the Chesapeake United Soccer Club (CUSC) based in Chesapeake, Virginia (formerly the Chesapeake Select Soccer Club). CUSC Arsenal is coached by Leroi Wilson and is comprised of hard-working players from 4 different Hampton Roads cities and looks forward to "tackling" the Premier Divsion of VSLI for the upcoming Fall Soccer Season.

CUSC Arsenal earned their first Williamsburg Cup Championship this Labor Day Weekend (2007).  To do so, they easily dispatched their group play opponents, the Virginia Legacy Premier, Va Rush Cobras, and the Gloucester Arsenal by a combined score of 23-0.  12 different Arsenal players scored those goals.  For the Championship, Arsenal found themselves in a much different match with the Va Rush Nike 2.  76 minutes of soccer between the two teams found the result 0-0.  Finally, Dylan broke through from the left side and dispatched a rebound shot inside the far post to earn Arsenal the Championship.  Dylan became the 13th Arsenal player to score over the weekend.  Again, like the SAC Summer Shootout in Maryland, a total team effort all weekend long earn the honors.

New Arsenal keeper has a dream weekend

CUSC Arsenal headed to Columbia, Maryland during the weekend of Aug. 11-12 to play in their first tournament, the SAC Summer Shootout, under new Head Coach Leroi Wilson.  The result was a Championship with Arsenal's new keeper enjoying a "dream" type of weekend.  To begin tournament play, CUSC Arsenal defeated the nearby HSA Blue Devils by a score of 7-0, dominating play in this match throughout.  For the second match on Saturday, Arsenal faced a very different type of opponent in the Severna Park Elite.  Severna Park Elite is a current Maryland State Cup Semi-Finalist, ranked #5 in the state of Maryland as well as #35 in Region 1.  This was extremely well played match for early August.   The final score was 0-0 with Severna registering 10 shots, requiring 3 saves from John, while Arsenal mustered 5 shots, requiring 3 saves from their keeper.  As expected, Severna dominated their following match with HSA Blue Devils which resulted in Arsenal and Severna remaining tied after all tournament tiebreakers to determine a Group winner (3 team groups, six team age group division).  The result, PKs with Severna at 7:30 in the morning on Sunday to determine who gets to play the first and second place finishers of the other age group bracket.  In the PKs, Arsenal earned a final 4-3 PK outcome.  As a result, Arsenal continued their warm-up on Sunday to face the Braddock Road YC Boca team in the semi-finals.  In this match, Arsenal took control early getting out to 4-0 halftime lead on their way to 5-0 win and a spot in the Championship match.  In the Sunday final, Arsenal was pitted against the Severna Park Elite team in a rematch after Severna won their semi-final by a score of 2-1.  Since both teams were obviously a little more familiar with each other from Saturday's game, this match was more wide-open with action going from one to the other very quickly at times.  The result - a thrilling 0-0 tie after regulation.  120 minutes of tournament play between these two teams with no score.  So for the second time, Arsenal and Severna headed to PKs - this time to determine a tournament winner.  For the first four rounds, both Arsenal and Severna converted 2 PKs (Chace and Jared for Arsenal).  For the final round, John made a save on the final Severna PK and then converted the tournament Championship winner for a 3-2 PK win.  As a result, John had 4 shutouts, 5 saves, 1 PK save in tournament play which, after group play was over, allowed Arsenal to remain tied for first in the group, 2 PK saves on Sunday including the final try of the opponent, and two converted PKs, one of which earned the tournament Championship.  However, as in all tournaments, it wasn't just John that played well throughout the weekend.  Everyone did with 8 different players scoring and a defense of Ray, Justin, Zac, Alex, Michael, and Brandon that helped maintain those shutout scores.

Congrats to Andrew C. for being invited to the ODP Regional Camp on July 6 - 10 at Rider University in New Jersey. Congrats also to Alex, John, and Stephen for their selection to Southeast ODP District team(s).

CUSC Arsenal has participated in its Chesapeake Icebreaker on the first weekend of March for 4 years. During that time, CUSC Arsenal has won 3 titles and earned an undefeated record of 12-0-2. The only time, CUSC Arsenal did not garner an award was the rain shortened 2005 edition. For this years tournament, CUSC Arsenal won their group with the Wall SC Magic (from New Jersey), CUSC West Ham United, and the FASA G-Force (from Fredericksburg) by a combined tally of 9-2. In the Championship on Sunday, CUSC Arsenal met the ODSC Blue Fusion and played 70 minutes of scoreless soccer before winning the Championship via PKs 3-1.

CUSC Arsenal earned the honor of CASL Shootout Co-Champions during the Veterans Day Weekend Tournament in Raleigh, North Carolina as declared by the tournament officials. CUSC Arsenal defeated a CASL United Black squad from Raleigh and an Augusta Arsenal side from Georgia on Saturday. Unfortunately, lots of overnight rain as well as continuous rain on Sunday forced the postponement of all matches on Sunday. However, CUSC Arsenal had already won their group and made it to the Championship match based on the results of Saturday's matches since they owned all head-to-head tiebreakers with teams in their group that had a potential to tie Arsenal on Sunday morning (i.e. Sunday morning's match did not "mean" anything for Arsenal). Additionally, CUSC Arsenal was the only team in the entire Elite B Division of U14 Boys not to concede a goal on Saturday.
