Colorado Springs Little League: Challenger League

CSLL-Challenger Baseball

The Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League Baseball to enable boys and girls with physical and mental disabilities, ages 5-18 or the completion of high school, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide.

Teams are set up according to abilities, rather than age, and can include as many as 15-20 players, who can participate in one of three levels: Tee-Ball, Coach-Pitch or Player Pitch.

Each player gets a chance at bat. The side is retired when the offense has batted through the roster, or when a pre-determined number of runs has been scored, or when three outs are recorded. Little League recommends that no score be kept during games. The Challenger players wear the same uniforms, shoulder patches and safety equipment as other Little League players.

One of the benefits of having a Challenger Division is that it encourages the use of "buddies" for the Challenger players. The buddies assist the Challenger players on the field but whenever possible, encourage the players to bat and make plays themselves. However, the buddy is always nearby to help when needed.

FAQs

Who can play?:
Boys and girls with physical and mental disabilities, ages 4-19

Where do you play?:
All games are played at the El Pomar Youth Park off of S.Circle and Janitele road (just behind Kohl's)
2230 Executive Circle 80906 (map)

When is your season?:
The actual season for 2014 is April 27nd - June 29rd

When are games played?:
Games will be played on Sundays again starting on 27Apr 14. Sundays provide us the most flexibility as we are not competing with the league for fields. Most importantly, it allows us to take as much time as we need to play the games without being rushed off the field…over having to wait for the games before us to end.
We will have an eight game season this year. The first 4 games will be played in the afternoon (tentatively 1pm) to afford us the best chance for favorable weather. After a one week break for Memorial Day, the games in June will be played beginning in the morning (tentatively 10:30am) for the same reason.

How often do you paractice?:
We don't.  The goal is not so much to try to make better baseball players as it is to just have fun.

How much does it cost to register?:
The cost is $30.  Please ask about our scholarship program if the cost is an issue.  We have a limited amount, but we want to try to make sure everyone gets a chance to play.

Where are your boundaries?:
Since there are no other bordering Challenger programs in our city we do not have to reside inside the same boundary areas as the rest of little league.  So for now pretty much anyone between Pueblo and Soth Denver who wants to play can join us.
