Play of the Day - 9/4/11

PLAY:  It is 4th & 10 from Team R’s 40-yardline, and Team K is in a scrimmage kick formation. Player K1’s punt goes beyond the expanded neutral zone and strikes the ground near the sideline at R’s 5 yd line and appears headed in the direction of the pylon. There are no Team R players in the vicinity of the grounded bounced kick. Player K2, who went out-of-bounds on his own, is standing out-of-bounds at R’s 5-yardline and bats the ball backward into the field-of-play. Player K3 downs the ball at R’s 10 yd line.

RULING:  R’s ball, 1st/10 from R’s 5 yardline or if Illegal participation foul accepted its 15 yds from previous spot.

PLAY:  Fourth & 10 at K’s 10 yardline. Team K is in a scrimmage formation, and kicker K1 muffs the snap. During a scramble for the ball, and to keep player R1 from recovering the muffed ball, player K1 bats the ball backward at his own 4 yardline. The ball rolls into the end zone and over the end line.

RULING:  It is a foul on K1 for illegally batting the ball. It is a loose ball foul with the basic spot being the previous spot. If the penalty is accepted, under the all-but-one principle, enforcement is from the spot-of-the-foul at K’s 4-yardline. If R declines the penalty, the result of the play is a safety.

PLAY:  It is 4th & 10 and K is at its own 17 yardline in scrimmage kick formation, and K1 punts the ball across the expanded neutral zone. After the punt hits the ground at K’s 40 yardline, player R1 signals for a fair catch (FC). K2 blocks R1 above the waist at the chest causing R1 to touch the ball. A prone player K3 recovers the grounded ball at K’s 37 yardline.

RULING:  If K accepts the penalty for the invalid FC, Post-Scrimmage Kick (PSK) enforcement is applied, 5 yd penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul at K’s 40-yardline, and R loses the opportunity to take the ball at the K’s 37.

PLAY:  Second and 10 at B’s 22-yard line. B24, running backwards in pass coverage, intercepts the pass on his own 3-yard line and his momentum carries him into his own end zone where he is tackled by A80. The force of the tackle knocks the ball loose and it rolls out of the back of the end zone.

RULING:  B24 intercepted the pass on the 3-yard line and his momentum carried him into his end zone, where he fumbled the ball out the back of the end zone. Because the interception occurred on B’s 3-yard line, and his own momentum carried him into the end zone, the "Momentum Exception" applies. The ball will be spotted at the 3-yard line and it will be first and ten for B.

PLAY:  Second and 10 at B’s 22-yard line. B24, running backwards in pass coverage, intercepts the pass on his own 7-yard line and his momentum carries him into his own end zone where he is tackled by A80. The force of the tackle knocks the ball loose and it rolls out of the back of the end zone.

RULING:  Safety and B will free kick from its 20.

PLAY:  With 10:50 remaining in the 2nd quarter, 3rd and 5 on B’s 35, A5 carries the ball to B’s 18 yard line. During the down, A’s Assistant Coach was in the restricted area causing the Line Judge to brush against him near the 25 yard line as he covered the play. There has been no prior warning against Team A and this is the first offense for any contact with a coach.

RULING:  15 yard Non-Player Illegal Personal Contact foul - 1st down on the 33.

PLAY:  Early in the third quarter A’s Head Coach is in the restricted area during a live ball and is flagged by the line judge. The Assistant Coach for Team A had been penalized in the 2nd quarter for a Nonplayer Contact foul.

RULING:  This is the first restricted area infraction so the team is given a Sideline Warning.

PLAY:  Team A has had three restricted area infractions in the game. The last of which was assessed 15 yards. It is now the fourth quarter and Team A Head Coach makes contact with the Line Judge.

RULING:  This is the first illegal contact foul by a Nonplayer from Team A so there will be no disqualification.
