Congratulation to Coach Nathan Gonzales for showing us an example of true Championship

I just wanted to recognize Nathan and his Varsity Girls teams at St Francis for demonstrating great sportsmanship during our game in the St Louis tournament last Saturday November 28, 2009. For the game, two of my players were out of town and I only had five girls present for the game. Towards the end of the game, in the 4th quarter, one of my girls, who had scored the majority of our points and was out best ball handler, received her 5th personal foul. After discussing the situation with the referee, Nathan agreed to let her stay in the game and finish playing so we did not have to play with only four girls. This was a close fought game that we ended up winning by only one point and I am sure the outcome would have been different had we played the remainder of the game with only four girls. After the game the girl who fouled out thanked Nathan and he gave her a big hug and a kind word.

I know this gesture made a big impact on my player and it showed tremendous sportsmanship. Nathan and his team are a great representation of the Play Like a Champion philosophy as well as an example of selfless sportsmanship. I look forward to another good game with St Francis in the regular season.

Thank you Coach Darren Jacoby of St. Louis for sharing this report of good sportsmanship

Great Sportsmanship Shown by Nativity JV Girls / Championship Bracket

Thank you to Coach Dryden  for sharing this report!!!

I just wanted to let you know about a terrific act of sportsmanship by the Nativity JV Division I girls team.  We played them last night for the JV girls’ championship.  After a hard fought and well played game, St Mary's beat Nativity 23 -21 on a basket made as the clock expired.  After the game, with their faces still wet with tears, the Nativity girls presented our team with roses.  I thought this was a tremendous show of sportsmanship and friendship.  Every St Mary parent and player I spoke with was overwhelmed with this gesture.  All of the Nativity parents and staff should be extremely proud of their girls.  They played a great game and showed a lot of class.  They really represented all of the best things that CSAL is about and I thought I should let you know.

Thanks

Joe Dryden

Great game

This game was played between Ave Maria and St. John the Baptist Varsity Girls. A note was sent from the coach of Ave Maria to the coach of St. John the Baptist. This a wonderful example of our "Play Like a Champion philosophy. Thank you to both coaches and teams.

“Congratulations from our team to yours on your win last night. As expected, it was a great game, and as many parents stated to me afterward, it was definitely worth the price of admission!  Great entertainment for a Friday night. Your team played tough, fair, never gave up, and is a credit to you as their coach and is a credit to their school. I look forward to playing you again later this season as playing good teams always makes our team better, regardless of the outcome.”

Great Athletic Director

I’d like to submit a good sportsmanship comment about the Nativity AD. John has been one of the best AD's I think I've ever met. He attends all home games and even some away games. He comes to talk to the coaches before games and is extremely encouraging. I feel he is an extremely important example for CSAL and already showing a "Play like a champion" attitude.  I am happy to drive all the way to Broomfield, just to deal with John. The gym is always clean and ready when we show up and his attitude working the door at tournaments is always a pleasure.  I always hear good comments from other coaches and parents about their experiences at Nativity and with John.  We need more people like him in the league.

"Notre Dame's coach and players were great, they played a great game and were all smiles afterward"

Thanks to Sts. Peter & Paul coach, Pamela Weerstra for recognizing "good sports"

Nativity vs. St. Pius
There are some days when a team shows up and you know it's going to be a
good day.  That's what happened when St Pius' Varsity Girls Division I
team showed up to play both our Nativity Girls' teams (Red and White) on
Saturday, April 12.  St Pius' head coach, assistant coaches, and players
arrived early and ready to play.  Positive attitudes, smiling faces,
and a group of parents ready to share their team's enthusiasm...what a
way to start the day.
At the beginning of the second match, due to some unforeseen
circumstances, Nativity was without a scorekeeper.  Reniese (Head Coach
for St Pius) volunteered one of her parents (Mark) to keep the book.
Mark did an outstanding job.  (Thank you!)
Great job to Reniese, her coaches, players, and parents.

2008 Ted Tholen Sportsmanship Award
Congratulations to MPB's Widget Girls basketball team #48 and their coaches, Jack Cella & Sarah Lorance, for earning the 2008 Ted Tholen Sportsmanship Award for the season! Their positive attitude and hard work set an example for the other 77 teams in our league this year.

Christ the King Boys JV Teams

The two Christ the King JV Boy's basketball teams ended up playing each other for the Bracket 4 Championship. After the game, photos were taken by parents of both teams sitting together and both teams got together to do a group cheer after the game. It was a privalege to host the game and to see how sportsmanship is truly demonstrated and how this is all about the kids.

Nativity Coach, Dolly Kiessling recognized for demonstrating great leadership

One of the coaches for Nativity of Our Lord who coaches both basketball and volleyball was recognized for being incredibly encouraging to her players. "She exemplifies all the qualities that the league wants in their coaches. I know that her team will be well prepared, will play fair and will challenge our team to play their best as well."

Thank You to Chris Hodes, coach for Ave Maria!

Most Precious Blood Varsity Girls
I am the coach of St. Therese Varsity Girls Basketball and our last game of league play was against Most Precious Blood.  Even though they have had a difficult year in the win column, I was pleasantly impressed by both the coaches and the girls' outlook and attitude while they continued to encourage each other.  That really is what it is all about.  Not the winning, but the attitude and trying to have fun despite the outcome.  Way to go Most Precious Blood Girls Varsity and Coaches!!!

Compliments to OLL JVG D3 Coach!
I am the JV Div 3 coach for Our Lady of Fatima.  Tonight we played Our Lady of Lourdes and I wanted to let you know their coach was very respectful.  Our girls were having a hard time tonight and instead of making the game a blow out he tried to make the game more even.  I just wanted to let you know it was very nice to play against a coach who respects other teams abilities.
Thank you,
Mandy Gallardo

Thank you Coach Andersen for submitting the following great report

"A tip of the hat to #10 Gracie and #24 Colbie on the Saint Pius Varsity Girls Division 2B basketball team. During our game with them on January 22, Gracie got tangled up with one of our girls, Ellie while running down the court which caused Ellie to trip and fall. Gracie stopped, even though play continued, to help Ellie up and told her she was sorry. Colbie also came over to make sure she was alright. Again, while the game was being played. Their concern for a competitor over the results of the game exhibit the true CSAL spirit of competition and camaraderie.

Please let the St. Pius girls know they are welcome anytime!

Roy Anderson

Coach, Saint James V Girls

St. Anne's Coach
Thank you to St. Anne's JV Division 1 Group B Girls' Coach.  Mary Wellems, Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at St. John the Baptist reports "After leading by a significant margin in the 1st quarter, he (the coach) worked with his team to make the game challenging for both teams. I just wanted to make sure that he knew his efforts were appreciated."

Monday, January 21
Great Sport / Honest Player
Great job to St. Anne's JV player, Marina #30. When the referee's at the game on January 5, 2008 did not see who last touched the ball on an out of bounds ball, Marina told the referee that she was the last one who touched it. Congratulations for keeping the game in perspective and having a positive attitude.

Kudos to Mary Wellems and the SJB varsity softball team. They provided doughnuts and drinks for the Fatima girls at an early morning game in Longmont.  Thanks again!  Mike Weathers

Compliments for Nativity!
"We had a game with the varsity girls Nativity White team and it was the best game we have played all year long. The game represented not only great sportsmanhip but it represented what this league really, truly stands for. The Athletic Director, John was wonderful as well as his team."

Spirit of CSAL
Taylor Rocke from Sts. Peter & Paul won the "Spirit of CSAL" Award for softball. Taylor, instead of pitching in a game against an opponent that did not have a lot of experience in softball, volunteered to work with the pitchers of the other team. Congratulations to Taylor.

A Parent Talks to a Child Before the First Game
This is your first game, my child.
I hope you win.
I hope you win for your sake, not mine.
Because winning is nice.
It's a good feeling.
Like the whole world is yours.

But, it passes, this feeling.
And what lasts is what you've learned.
And what you learn about is life.
That's what sports is all about. Life.
The whole thing is played out in an afternoon.
The happiness of life.
The miseries. The joys. The heartbreaks.

There's no telling what'll turn up.
There's no telling whether they'll toss you out in
the first five minutes or whether you'll stay for the long haul. There's no telling how you'll do.
You might be a hero or you might be absolutely
nothing.
There's just no telling.
Too much depends on chance.
On how the ball bounces.

I'm not talking about the game, my child.
I'm talking about life.
But, it's life that the game is all about.
Just as I said.
Because every game is life.
And life is a game.
A serious game.
Dead serious.

But, that's what you do with serious things.
You do your best.
You take what comes.
You take what comes.
And you run with it.
Winning is fun.
Sure.
But winning is not the point.
Wanting to win is the point.
Not giving up is the point.
Never being satisfied with what you'veve done
is the point.
Never letting up is the point.
Never letting anyone down is the point.
Play to win.
Sure.
But lose like a champion.
Because it's not winning that counts. What counts is trying.
