March 8, 2011 – LEAGUE WIDE MORATORIUM ON USE OF COMPOSITE BATS
Our chartering organization, Little League Baseball, Inc. has recently enacted a moratorium or ban on the use of composite barreled bats for all of its baseball divisions. This decision was enacted at the beginning of 2011 out of safety concerns arising out of the use of bats made of alloy or composite materials. In a nutshell, these bats actually gain performance and strength the more they are used. Batted balls coming off of composite bats can be hit at much higher velocities the more these bats are broken in through use in games and practices. The Bat Performance Factor (BPF) rating on these bats is therefore rendered grossly inaccurate in some situations. Safety for all players is a very real concern. This issue has become more complicated in recent weeks as Little League Baseball, Inc. has begun testing and approving the use of certain models of composite bats that only a few weeks ago were on their banned list. Detailed information is available on Little League’s website.
In light of this moratorium, Croton Little League’s Board of Directors has unanimously voted after much debate and deliberation to impose a league wide moratorium on the use of ALL composite bats for our upcoming 2011 Spring Season for all of our baseball divisions. Players will not be permitted to use ANY composite bats in either practices or games for the duration of our spring season. We simply cannot take the risk of serious injuries arising out of the use of these bats. Traditional 100% aluminum bats and wood bats will still be permitted for use. CLL already supplies aluminum and wood bats to each team in its league.
The safety of your children and the extreme difficulty that would ensue logistically for us as an organization to police every practice, every player, every at-bat, and every game in our six baseball divisions for adherence to the growing list of which bats are approved for use versus which ones are not is what ultimately led us to this decision. We feel that this local moratorium will not diminish the level of play, our players’ level of enjoyment, or the overall quality experience of our players through participation in our program. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you and your family but we simply must put your child’s safety first and foremost. If you have any questions or comments regarding this issue please let us know. We look forward to an exciting season with your families! It is almost time to PLAY BALL!
