U12 Panthers Runners Up in SWGL Plate competition (only losing on Penalties in final)
Well, my hat off to them!
First season together and after a faltering start in a toughest Girls League in Wales, the Under 12 Panthers finish mid table and then win their way through to the Semi Final of the SWGL Plate competition at Taffs Wells. The core of 12 players all played their part to get the team here, only losing one of their matches and despite having 3 points docked for a 'no show' earlier in the season. The Panthers ended up second in the qualifying group - knocking out hot favourites Cardiff City FC in their last match with a 1-0 win away.
SEMI FINAL
Caerphilly 0-1 Crickhowell Panthers
Despite plenty of pre match warming up, and the Panthers team Chant, as is the case with all of the Panthers teams, we started slow.
Caerphilly dominated the early play and the pitch slope seemed to dictate that pattern. It was end to end with chances at both ends but the Panthers were really unable to keep the ball in midfield and Caerphilly should have led early on. Slowly the Panthers got into the game and a corner from Summers hit the 6 yard area target and bounced off a defender into the net, unfortunate for Caerphilly but as we emphasis in training when taking corners, hit the danger area and anything can happen! The second half was a lot better for the Panthers, now playing downhill, and it was a well balanced game with again chances at both ends. Both keepers were kept busy with shots wide and over the goals as well as the odd goal mouth scramble..... but the Panthers held on!
FINAL
Cadoxten Imps 1-1 Crickhowell Panthers
(4-3) after penalties.
Cadoxten were a more physical team than our earlier opponents (but fair) and hopes were high as we had beaten them 2-1 a few weeks ago in the Plate qualifying matches.
Again the Panthers started slow, having problems keeping the ball in the middle of the park, the pitch slope also once again having it's influence. All of the early pressure came from the Imps and an early breakthrough came for them from a corner on the left that rebounded off a Panther defender into the net. The team kept their chins up and battled on and started to get back into the game and immediately before the half time whistle a 10 yard shot from Baynton richotched off an Imps defender, wrong footing the keeper who could do nothing but watch.....1-1.
The second half was really tight, again with chances at both ends, the best being a Panthers break away 3 minutes from time when the midfield put together some fine passes that released Lewis into some space but her shot glanced over the bar from 5 yards - oh what could have been?
After 5 minutes each way extra time there was nothing to seperate the teams and so to the dreaded penalties. D'Arcy pulled off some good saves in this pressure situation for the Panthers but in the end although our penalties all hit the target (excellent) some went straight down the middle to the Imps keeper........never mind!
The teams & coaches sportingly shook hands before and after the shoot out, then with the hip hip horays fading the Panthers gathered themselves for a debrief from Coach Stuart Summers.
Having come so far in such a short space of time, only losing in the final on the penalty lotto was a tremendous result for all 12 players, including one who couldn't be here today. They played well in an unfamiliar pressure situation, played sportingly and fair and gave their all.... what else can we ask for from a Crickhowell Panthers team.
Also many thanks to all of the parents who came down to support, a very good show, I think that they were more nervous the the girls!

CYFARTHFA FESTIVAL SUCCESS FOR PANTHERS - 21st FEB 2007
Two teams entered the mid week festival at Cyfartha High School. We had 20 players arrive (partly I suspect as they got time off of school to do so - in Merthyr it is Half Term)
We entered an under 11 and an Under 13 team who arrived at the Astroturf after a prolonged and irritating journey (we got lost more than once).
Only two other Clubs were entered, Abertysswg and Merthyr Town in both age groups so we were scheduled to play each team three times in each age group. The matches were 10 minutes each way.
After the dust had settled, the Under 11s had played 5, winning 3 and drawing 2 (11 points) and so won the competition. The Under 13s had played 4, winning 2 and drawing 2 (8 points) and so were joint winners.
What was also very impressive was that neither of the Panthers teams conceded any goals, both keepers keeping a clean sheet throughout, again bettering all of the competition.
The sun mainly shone, the players didn't go to school, we didn't concede any goals at all and won the competitions......so a good days work and the players all enjoyed themselves.
Thanks again to the parents who supported and helped with the transport.

Panthers clinch SWGL 'Plate' semi win with' ten men', then WIN the FINAL
After despatching our Semi Final opponents Georgetown in the Margam festival, we knew that it would be difficult to repeat the feat with a few regulars missing and whilst trying to counter their physical game with our passing one.
The game as aspected was tough and physical, and ended 1-1 after extra time and after losing Tucker to a groin strain, down to 7 players (ten men situation). Georgetown, within the rules but very unsportingly refused to balance the teams by withdrawing one of their players - good job that Rees secured the victory in extra time and the Panthers won the match with a display of behaviour and attitude that did the Club proud.
Well done Panthers !!!! - Into the Final.
The Final was against Coed Cae Colts and with on form players cheered up with the earlier Semi Final win went on to clinch the Silverware with a convincing team display and a 5-0 scoreline.
As I say "We definately need a trophy cabinet in Llangynidr Hall now!"
Well done Panthers........................

South Powys Easter Festival
South Powys Easter Festival - Panthers perform again
The Under 11(1995) 'Grey Panthers' played with encouraging tenacity, some good play, movement and defence. The team has played a few games together over the season and it's good to see some clear improvement from every player, the Coaches were very pleased with their initial win against Newtown and their effort against North Ceredigion whom we narrowly lost to 1-0 (North Ceredigion went on to win the section).
The Silver Panthers (1993) played a year above themselves (all bar one, 1994) and produced some very good results. Beating North Ceredigion 2-0 in the opener and then Swansea Academy 2-0 (who won last year) was a tremendous result. With the Semi final appearance secured they played Mardy to decide who faced the favourites Paisley Saints in the next match, Mardy won 1-0. The Silvers battled hard against Paisley and produced the only goal against them in the whole tournament but went down a brave 2-1. (Paisley went on to win the section)
The Black Panthers (1992) stunned the excellent Ferndale with a 1-0 win in their opening match. The goal came early and some excellent defensive work with deserved luck kept out the favourites. The following match was lost 3-1 to Newtown but then a gutsy performance and comeback against Caersws (1-1 score) took the Blacks through to the Semi Finals, equalling Ferndale on points but as the Blacks had beaten them earlier, had the nod. They played the favourites in the Semi final - Swansea Academy, who won last year and indeed went on to win this year. It was a tough match and the Blacks truly got stuck in and ground out a 0-0 draw at full time. Swansea scored 2 goals in extra time but a great effort by the Blacks.
Can't fault the effort, skill and determination of all of the Panther teams and players. I think that we all hade a great day playing football and lounging in the sun and the results show us how far the players have progressed in both their skills , spirit and fair play in the face of some bad mouthing and unsportmanship conduct from two teams in particular (Newtown and Caersws).......
Well done girls.
