Craig Cougars: 2008-2009 Season

The Cougars finished their conference dual meet season with a decisive victory over Big 8 newcomer Verona. 

At 103lbs, Kyle Upmann won by pinat 3:30.  At 112lbs, Ben Rolon won by decision 13-7.  At 119, Siven Furseth remianed undefeated in conference matches with a win by pinfall in 57 seconds.  At 125, Sam DePoutiloff lost by pin.  At 130lbs, Chris Pierce got those points back with a pin in 52 seconds.  At 135, Chris Simonson lost by major decision 1-9.  At 140lbs, Travis Davis lost by tech fall 4-19.  At 145, Ryan Coleman won by a pin at 1:48.  At 152lbs, Nathan Mather won by forfeit.  At 160, Zach Kurtz won by forfeit.  At 171lbs, Vaughn Garza won by pinfall at 1:22.  At 189, Drilon Grajcevci had the quick pin of the night at 42 seconds.  At 215lbs, Mike Spaulding won by a pin at 2:28.  At 285, Andrew Madden lost by pinfall.

Team Score: Janesville Craig 57, Verona 21

The Cougars weren't able to take the team title this year, but several wrestlers were in the finals.  Siven Furseth and Chris Pierce were able to take championships in their weight classes.

The Cougars continued their winning way with a big win over East.  Some freshman wrestlers got a chance at the varsity level, and did well. 

At 103lbs, Kyle Upmann won by forfeit.  At 112, Ryan Ruble won by forfeit.  At 119lbs, Siven Furseth remained undefeated in conference action with a pin at 1:29.  At 125, Chris Pierce also won by pin, at 1:21.  At 130lbs, Chris Simonson lost by pinfall.  At 135, Jesse Davila won by a late pin at 5:16.  At 140, Travis Davis returned to action with a decision victory 7-6.  At 145lbs, Ryan Coleman won by forfeit.  At 152, Nathan Mather lost in a close OT match 9-13.  At 160lbs, Zach Kurtz won by pinfall at 3:10.  At 171, Vaughn Garza lost by a pin.  At 189lbs, Drilon Grajcevci lost by a late pin.  At 215, Andrew Coulter lost by pin.  At 285lbs, Mike Spaulding won by tech fall at 5:10.

As usual, it was down to the wire, but the young cougars showed a lot of heart and beat Parker 40-31.  Several surprising big wins made all the difference, and ensured a good conference standing.  The starting weight was 125.

At 125lbs, Chris Pierce battled his way to a win 6-5.  At 130, Jamie Kumlien came up with a great second period pin at 3:05.  At 135lbs, Chris Simonson lost closer that the score showed of 9-13.  At 140, Jesse Davila dominated to a pin at 2:22.  At 145lbs, Ryan Coleman lost in a see-saw battle by pinfall.  At 152, Troy Davis finished his high school wrestling career in grand fashiion with an upset pin at 2:52.  At 160lbs, Ian Kopp fought, but by major decision 2-11.  At 171, Zack Kurtz lost to an experienced wrestler by pinfall.  At 189lbs,  Drilon Grajcevci fought his way to the end, and outlasted his opponent 7-6.  At 215, Mike Spaulding came up with a surprising fast pin at 1:02.  At 285, Mitch Flewelling lost to a much bigger wrestler by pinfall.  At 103lbs, Kyle Upmann lost by a surprise pinfall.  At 112, Ben Rolon ensured the Cougar victory with a fantastic major decision 9-1.  At 119lbs, Siven Furseth won by a forfeiture.

JV Results:

Ryan Ruble won by pin.  Samuel DePoutiloff, Chris Kubiak, Nathan Mather, Andew Merk, and Zach Vogt lost.

The Cougars only gave the La Follette Lancers points with a forfeiture at 285.  This was part of the Sun Prairie duals.

At 103, Kyle Upmann won by pin in 20 seconds.  At 112lbs, Ben Rolon won by pin in 44 seconds.  At 119, Siven Furseth won by pin in 43 seconds.  At 125lbs, Chris Pierce won by decision 9-7.  At 130, Chris Simonson won by forfeit.  At 135, Jess Davilla won by forfeit.  At 140lbs, Ryan Coleman won by pin in 42 seconds.  At 145, Troy Davis won by decision 15-9.  At 152lbs, Ian Kopp won by pin at 1:50.  At 160, Zach Kurtz won by decision 8-7.  At 171lbs, Vaughn Garza won by forfeit.  At 189lbs, Drilon Grajcevci had the fastest pin in 13 seconds.  At 215, Mike Spaulding won by pin in 99 seconds.  At 285, Craig Forfeited.

The Cardinals surprised the Cougars with an upset win 40-27.  This was part of the Sun Prairie duals held over Christmas break.

At 103lbs, Kyle Upmann won by pin in 97 seconds.  At 112, Ben Rolon won by decision 10-6.  At 119lbs, Siven Furseth won by pinfall at 4:41.  At 125, Chris Pierce lost to a very tough opponent 2-7.  At 130lbs, Chris Simonson won by decision 9-5.  At 135lbs, Jesse Davilla won by pin at 2:41.  At 140, Ryan Coleman lost by pin.  At 145, Troy Davis lost by decision 2-8.  At 152lbs, Ian Kopp lost by pinfall.  At 160lbs, Zach Kurtz lost by major decision 0-10.  At 171, Vaughn Garza lost by pin. At 189lbs, Drilon Grajcevci lsot by pin.  At 215, Mike Spaulding won by decision 6-5.  At 285, Craig forfeited.

The visiting Purple Knights gave up forfeits in three weight classes to lose to the young Cougars 40-36.  The starting weight class was 171.

At 171lbs, Vaughn Garza lost by pin.  At 189, Drilon Grajcevci lost 3-8.  At 215lbs, Mike Spaulding battled, but lost by pinfall.  At 285, Cody Jensen lost by pin.  At 103lbs, Kyle Upmann won by forfeit.  At 112, Ben Rolon won by pin at 2:57.  At 119lbs, Siven Furseth also won by pinfall, at 2:21.  At 125, Jamie Kumlien won by major decision 20-6.  At 130lbs, Chris Peirce got the fast pin of the night at 64 seconds.  At 135, Chris Simonson lost in a close duel 3-4.  At 140lbs, Jesse Davila won by forfeit.  At 145, Troy Davis won by forfeit.  At 152lbs, Mathan Mather lost by pin.  And at 160lbs, Ian Kopp lost by pin.
