Why Cross-Ice? One of the most frequent questions asked when a child begins playing hockey usually revolves around the cross-ice program. Many parents would like to know why their child is not skating or playing games on a full sheet of ice, and what the benefits of such a smaller surface are. Simply put, cross-ice hockey increases the number of times a player touches the puck during a game, helping them develop their puck control skills and allows them to play on ice dimensions that are of better proportion to their size, helping them develop their technical skills quicker. For a more complete overview of the program, the link to the USA Hockey Cross-Ice Initiation document is attached: http://www.usahockey.com/Template_Usahockey.aspx?NAV=PL_01_18&id=5238
It is important to remember that cross-ice is a USA Hockey and New York State program requirement. |
