Can-Cans dance to final as Cove are "Browned" off
Cove crashed out of the HFL League Cup against Forres Mechanics in the semi-final on Saturday. A goal from Neil Whyte 30 seconds before half time, one from Charlie Brown and another from Steve Maclean put paid to a desperately poor performance from the outgoing champions.

Cove never really got to grips with the swirling wind and fiery pitch, and some poor officiating did'nt help the cause either. Whyte scored after running from a position at least 5 yards offside, and Forres player boss Connelly should have been given his marching orders early in the second half for deliberately tripping John Coutts when the last defender. Referee Duff only saw fit to show a yellow card, but only 5 minutes later, the linesman failed to spot the same player handle the ball away from Kenny Coull with both hands in the Forres box. To add insult to injury, the resulting corner was cleared downfield for Charlie Brown to score his second.

Again we were poor on Saturday. It was like we were going through the motions, with few exceptions, and not playing in a semi-final.

The opinion amongst the supporters on the way back was that Kevin really needs to shake a few players up before the Rothes game on Wednesday, and that one or two of them may not or should not be at Allan Park for much longer. We appreciate he came in at a tough stage of the season, and inherited a team low on confidence, but the sooner he stamps his authority on the side, the better.

Competition Time at CoveWeb
Keep your eyes on the site over the next few days as we are launching a wonderful competition to warm up Cove fans during these dark post Christmas days.

Prizes are being confirmed at present, and the competition is open to all ages. So whether you're 6 or 60, we'll be waiting for your entry!

SUPPORTERS WANTED FOR HFL FANS TOURNAMENT
There will be a HFL fans 7-a-side tournament held in Bught Park, Inverness on Sunday 6th July as part of Moray Firth Radio's Birthday Celebration Weekend, and Cove have been invited to send a team up to take part.

The competition is being organised by Steve Rattray, the man behind the Highlandleague.net website, and he is hopeful of having a team from every club in the league taking part, as well as teams from Caley Thistle, Peterhead, Elgin City, Golspie Sutherland and a team of HFL referees taking part as players!

It will be a seven-a-side tournament with 10-person squads, and will be organised into groups like the World Cup, so each team is guaranteed at least four games.

Teams are allowed ONE current and ONE former player in their line-up, otherwise the only restriction is age. YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 15 YEARS OLD TO TAKE PART.There is no upper age limit. Entry per team is £40, so only £4 for each player, and it sounds like a great day out, as there will be live bands, a fairground and loads more (click the headline for a link).

If you are interested and available on the day, please e-mail me ASAP. We could enter 2 teams if there is enough interest.

We will also need a manager, a spongeperson and some supporters! If we could fill a coach to go up, that would be great. Let's have a fun day out and see if we can win a trophy for Cove this season!

COVE SHOW FORT-TITUDE IN COMFORTABLE WIN
Cove made the long trip to Lochaber on Saturday to face a struggling Fort William side, who impressed on their trip to Aberdeen at the back end of last year before 2 late goals put a gloss on the score, but have been suffering dreadfully from suspensions, injuries and player unavailability since.

A 1.15pm kick-off due to the Scotland-Iceland game meant an early start for players and fans alike, as physio Eddie’s copious yawn spotted as we sped past the bus stop at Blackburn in the car demonstrated!

Claggan Park is in many ways the most picturesque ground in North, if not British football, lying as it does at the entrance to Glen Nevis, but it does have its drawbacks. For one thing the actual ground is huge, and the fencing is set a good 10 yards back from the touchline, making the spectator feel removed from the action somewhat, and the fact that football is very much the second sport to shinty in that part of the country meant that the crowd was small to say the least. I would say that paying customers were no more than 40, and if it hadn’t been for the stag party taking in the game on a trip up from York, then the atmosphere would have been non-existent!! Deano would have enjoyed the singsongs, although thankfully the Yorkshire lads would have drowned him out!!

The pitch looked in far better condition than it did last year; although very dry, it was flat and reasonably true. The early exchanges had the feel of a pre-season game, with neither side really seeming to have their heart in it, but it all changed on 5 minutes when Ritchie Livingstone pounced on a loose ball at the edge of the Fort area and volleyed into the top right corner from 18 yards. Fort, who were blooding some of their promising youngsters, had a few good moments, forcing 3 corners in succession at one stage, but the cutting edge was with the away side. Beattie, Kenny Coull, Chris Pilichos , Rusty, Richie and Andy all had shots go just wide or well saved during the rest of the half, and Jim Cheyne powered a header over where he should have done better perhaps.

The games was virtually wrapped up just 2 minutes into the second half, Kenny Coull knocking down the long ball for Beattie to race past his marker and deftly lob the onrushing Fort goalkeeper, McKenzie.   The second half continued with Fort putting together a couple of good moves, but Cove looked far more dangerous going forward, and Rusty Smith got his reward for bossing the midfield on 55 minutes when he flicked the ball over the full back and blasted home a 25 yard screamer from the angle of the box. The game was dead after that, and although Fort pressed, Marc Coull didn’t have a save of note to make until the 85th minute or so and Cove held on comfortably.

Final Score : Fort William 0 – 3 Cove Rangers
Attendance : 40 (no, I have’nt missed a zero off!!)

Cove Rangers : M Coull, Pilichos, Mullen, Cheyne, Allan, McGinlay, Livingstone, Smith, McCraw, Beattie, K Coull

Subs Used : Yeats (Pilichos 60), Greig (Livingstone 65), Murphy (Allan 88)

Subs Not Used : Charles, Brown.
