Football fans may have flocked to Texas Stadium on Oct. 21 to watch the Dallas Cowboys play the Minnesota Vikings, but as an added bonus, they received a little taste of Copperas Cove talent.
The Copperas Cove High School Copperettes took the field during the game’s halftime to perform alongside the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders watched by more than 63,000 people.
“It was really fun. I think the girls had a blast,” Copperettes director Jessica Beechwood said. “The stadium was packed, so they performed in front of thousands and thousands of people.”
The Copperettes were one of a handful of teams selected to participate in the show based on their rankings at the Marching Auxiliaries and the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Dance Competition last spring.
The team traveled to Dallas on Saturday, Oct. 20 early in the morning in time to catch the day-long rehearsal at the stadium that lasted from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. They was greeted and trained by Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Tricia Trevino and Michelle Mozek.
“It was fun practicing.” said senior Leah Harrison, co-captain of the Copperettes. “But when we actually got on the field at halftime to do it with everyone in their costumes and with the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders and all the special effects going off, it felt really exciting, and it got your adrenaline really pumping.”
For the annual Halloween Halftime Spooktacular on Sunday evening, the girls dressed in elaborate ghost and zombie costumes and performed two routines to the theme from “Ghostbusters” and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” The dances were choreographed by the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.
“It was one of the dances that you could really have fun with,” Copperette senior Kaci Courtney said. “I think that’s the best way to measure a performance: whether it’s fun, and it was. You could tell the people around you were having fun too.”
The extravagant production included performances by several other award-winning high schools and a junior age group consisting of first- through sixth-graders. As the students danced alongside the cheerleaders, a live fireworks display capped the halftime show.
“I don’t even know if there was a word to describe it. It was just crazy and super energetic,” Courtney said. “You could feel the crowd’s energy coming into you, and you don’t know exactly what to do with it all.”
