INTERMEDIATE DIVISION BAT RULES

image_name2
The addition of the new Intermediate Division brings with it some rule changes from the traditional Majors Division rules we have played since CLL’s inception.  The official rules governing bats have changed and then have been further modified by Coronado Little League so please read this carefully so you understand. This discussion is relevant only to the Intermediate Division.
NO COMPOSITE BARREL BATS – Little League will not allow the use of composite barrel bats that are on the approved “list” for the Majors Division for play in the Intermediate Division.  NO EXCEPTIONS.  I have asked this question to the Western Region Director personally.  Don’t get rid of a composite bat if you have it,  BUT DO NOT BUY  A COMPOSITE BARREL BAT.
Bat Rules:  The official rules governing bats in the Intermediate Division have been changed by Little League to match those of the Juniors Division.  It was the feeling of the CLL Board that Juniors Division bat rules are not best suited for the age group of this division, nor the size of Bradley Field.  Consequently, the CLL Board has created a more restrictive set of bat rules that we feel is better suited to the Intermediate Division.  These rules are listed below.  These rules apply only to the CLL Intermediate Division only

  2. Aluminum or Alloy bats are ALLOWED - bats MUST BE NO MORE THAN 2 ¼ INCH in DIAMETER.  The handle can be made of a composite material but the barrel must be Aluminum or Alloy.  There must be the “Approved for use in Little League”statement on the barrel.
  3. Wood Bats are ALLOWED:  Wood bats must be no longer than 34 inches and the barrel no larger than 2 5/8 inches.
Cleats:  NO STEEL CLEATS OR SPIKES, cleats must be the molded type like they have always been using in Little League.
Please also understand that any composite bats approved for use in the Majors Division are not allowed under the Juniors Division rules that Little League put into effect for Intermediate Division play, so you would not have been able to use them in the Intermediate Division regardless of the more restrictive CLL local rules.
If you are in the market for a bat for the Intermediate Division
If your son is 11 or 12 – buy an aluminum bat:
Why? You will get two years or more play out of it in LL baseball so they are worth the investment.
If your son is 13 – checkout or try a wood bat:
Why? Cost.  You can purchase an 2 ¼ inch aluminum bat that could run about $150 or more.  A wood bat will cost about $40 -$60 or less depending on what and where you buy. It may prove more economical. If you buy wood stay with Birch or Ash, Maple tends to be heavier.  You can get one fairly cheap and let them hit in a cage with it to see how they like it.  If it doesn’t work out then dad gets his own bat to hit grounders with.  If he likes it, try it in practice and then decide.
If, however, your 13 can’t handle the additional weight, then go with aluminum bat and plan on selling it to someone coming up to Intermediate next season.
If at any point you are unsure of what to do feel free to call myself, Rob Miller, or the Intermediate Division Director Scott Meloche.
 Thanks
Alex Fahrenthold (CLL President)
