Softball: Legacy stops Grandview again in first round of state tournament

AURORA | No matter what, the Grandview softball team won't have to face Legacy pitcher Shelby Babcock at next season's Class 5A state tournament.

That should be a relief for the Wolves, who stretched their losing streak to Babcock — a University of Arizona-bound senior — and the Lightning to two years in a row in the first round of the state tournament on Friday with a 7-0 loss at the Aurora Sports Park.

Sixteenth-seeded Grandview (11-12) got just one hit off Babcock last season in seven innings and managed none off her this season in five frames as top-seeded Legacy moved another game closer to winning its third straight state championship. The Lightning (20-0) went on to beat Arvada West 7-1 to reach Saturday's semifinal round.

Hitting 60 mph or higher regularly, Babcock struck out 10 batters in her five innings, issuing a pair of walks to Kalie DePold and Natalie Conners she was able to work around. Rainey Griffin pitched the final two innings for Legacy, allowing a single to sophomore Marina Quimby, but preserving the shut out.

Quimby allowed seven runs on nine hits over six innings, striking out three and walking none. She held down the Lightning's potent lineup until the fourth inning, when Legacy scored four runs on four hits, including Rainey's two-run double.
