BATES SIGNS WITH UCLA

B.B. Bates was watching a UCLA softball game Down the Hill when she received a call from her brother telling her the Bruins had sent her a letter of intent to play softball there. The Victor Valley senior signed it the next day as she realized a dream she’s had since she was 11 years old. “We were talking about it on our way back up the hill, and my parents and I were all excited,” said Bates, who will receive a full-ride scholarship. “It tells me that my dream can come true if we really keep on working hard. ... I feel very confident that I’m going to help the team out.” Last season, Bates led California in on-base percentage, according to MaxPreps.com, and helped the Jackrabbits win the Desert Sky League title. Her travel team, the Corona Angels, finished runner-up at the Amateur Softball Association’s 18-and-under Gold national tournament in August. “Of course she’s gifted, but if you add work ethic to it, that makes her special,” Angels coach Marty Tyson said. “I know she’s going to go in there and compete, and that competition is going to make everyone better.”
