Head coach Heather Tarr adds one Washington product, three California standouts
Nov. 15, 2008
SEATTLE - Washington Husky head softball coach Heather Tarr announced the signing of four high school seniors to National Letters of Intent on Friday. The four players, who will join the Huskies for the 2009-10 season, all signed during the early signing period, which runs from Nov. 12-19. The regular signing period begins April 8, 2009 and runs through Aug. 1, 2009.
The newcomers include shortstop Jerrin Faasua (Oceanside, Calif.), catcher/infielder Melanie Fagaly (Chino, Calif.), pitcher Baily Harris (Longview, Wash.), and catcher/infielder Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.).
Wright is Tarr's third 2009-10 recruit to come out of the state of California as she hails from Lancaster High in Lancaster, Calif., the same hometown as former Husky standout pitcher Heather Meyer. Wright has made an impact since her freshman year of high school when she set new school and league records for home runs (11) and RBI (47) in a season, earning her first-team all league honors. As a sophomore, she broke her own record with 14 home runs and was named first team All-League and All-Area and was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year. She repeated each honor her junior season and also added first team All-State honors and was named Valley Player of the Year. She ranks fourth all-time in California with 36 career home runs heading into her senior season. Wright is a member of the Corona Angels club team which finished second at 18-and-under Nationals in 2008 and fifth in 2007.
"Ever since we've known Shawna Wright, we've wanted her to be a part of Husky softball," Tarr said. "Shawna can catch and play the infield corner positions. Her power at the plate will be noticed immediately as we will see a lot of balls land in the lake off her bat."
"I chose the University of Washington because I want to compete at the highest level on the field and in the classroom and Washington gives me a great opportunity to accomplish that," Wright said. "In my next four years at Washington, I want to earn a degree from a nationally ranked university and win a National Championship every year."
Tarr and the Huskies open up the 2009 season in St. George, Utah, at the Red Desert Classic, which runs Feb. 6-8. The Huskies are coming off their 15th consecutive postseason berth and will look to return to the Women's College World Series after making their eighth appearance in 2007.
