SIGNING DAY: The first day of the week-long early signing period is a busy one around the Inland area.

The area's biggest NCAA signing day question remained unanswered Wednesday as Moreno Valley Rancho Verde basketball star Mike Snaer decided to put off his decision until today or Friday. But there was plenty of activity elsewhere as the first day of the week-long early signing period commenced. Riverside Poly had a bumper crop of eight athletes who attended a signing gathering Wednesday, at which about 100 teammates and family members attended.

"We've never had this many before," Bears athletic director Bob Ritzau said. "The most we've had is four. A school this size you'd figure we'd have three, figuring the math." Poly's honor roll consisted of baseball players Jake Marisnick (Oregon), Blair Moore (San Diego State) and K. C. Renfro (UC San Diego); water polo players Jessica Cardey (UC Irvine), Courtney Muller (San Diego State) and Devin Crothers (UC Irvine); golfer Bryan Bergna (Loyola Marymount); and softball player Kaylan Howard (Oregon).

At Norco, five athletes are going the NCAA Division I route. They are basketball player Cierra Windham (Texas A& M); baseball players Wes Hatton and Matt Hobgood (both heading to Cal State Fullerton); and softball players Teagan Gerhart (Stanford) and Kelli Frye (Sacramento State). All five Cougars signed in a 7:45 a.m. Wednesday ceremony. "We're very proud of them," Norco athletic director Nick Beronich said. "We all believe they'll have a lot of success at the next level. The principal (John Johnson) said he's very proud of the parents, as well, because they're a large part of the success. Nowadays, they're carting the kids to travel ball from a young age." In Gerhart's case, she is following older brother Toby Gerhart -- a Stanford football and baseball standout -- to The Farm. Teagan Gerhart has a 4.3 grade-point average.

Other signing-day highlights: Corona Santiago's softball team is sending twins Kamerin and Kristin May to San Diego State, along with teammate Briana Turang heading to Oklahoma, and baseball player Joe Schoenfeld signed with San Diego State.

Hemet West Valley is sending basketball players Joseph Burton and Eric Lawton to Oregon State and San Diego State, respectively. Citrus Belt League baseball players Matt Davidson, of Yucaipa, and David Andriese, of Redlands East Valley, signed with USC and UC Santa Barbara, respectively. Redlands softball pitcher/slugger Kim Bruins signed with Texas. Today at 9 a.m., the San Bernardino Cajon girls basketball duo of Layshia Clarendon (Cal) and Darshae Burnside (Arkansas) is set to solidify their futures in a ceremony in Athletic Director Rich Imbriani's office. Gymnastics doesn't exist at many California high schools anymore. Nevertheless, Murrieta Valley senior Jasmine Brown was set to sign Wednesday with the University of Minnesota. The signing ceremony was to be held at 7:30 p.m. at Brown's club, the Southern California Elite Gymnastics Academy in Temecula. "I'm really happy that I can enjoy my senior year, and focus on gymnastics," Brown said. Assistant Sports Editor Tim Dutton contributed to this story.
