CORK ADMIRALS AMERICAN FOOTBALL: '07 Game Reports
Monday, March 26
Admirals get off to a winning start with hard fought game against Bulls
Cork Admirals @ Belfast Bulls
Venue; City of Belfast playing fields, Mallusk
Date; 25 March 07

Scoring; 1st quarter; Keith O'Callaghan 7 yard run, John Duggan PAT (7-0)
2nd quarter; Ger Mc Gowan 7 yard run (13-0)
3rd quarter; Bulls Ed McDonnell 30 yd reverse (13-6)
4th quarter; no scoring

The game, which was both teams season opener, was played in near perfect conditions on an excellent field, unusual for this time of year. The Bulls began the game in posession, but both teams initial offensive drives were unsuccessful. Peter Lucey and Marcus Gates were strong in defense for the Admirals early on. The first score of the game came on a 7yd run by Keith O'Callaghan after strong running from Alain Pezeron moved the visiting attack into scoring range. John Duggan added the PAT. The Admirals defense held on the ensuing Belfast drive, and after a long Dave Lomasney to Dominic McHale pass was caught near the goal-line Ger McGowan ran in the score, behind excellent blocking by Conor O'Sullivan, on the first play of the second quarter. The Bulls began to play strongly during the second quarter, gaining good yardage on runs by FB#1 and QB Mike Calo. After getting into a 1st and goal situation the Admirals defense stood firm for a great goal-line stand. Chris Gaughan and Paul Buchanan made vital tackles during this period. Alain Pezeron moved the ball on the ground well before the halftime break, the offensive line playing strong once again, but time expired with the Admirals out of field goal range. David Lomasney moved the ball well through the air early in the third quarter, connecting on passes to Dave Barry and Patrick duBoucher and McHale. The Bulls secondary performed well to keep the Admirals from scoring through the air. After gaining some momemtum the Belfast attack looked dangerous for the rest of the third quarter. Bulls WR Ed McDonnell took a reverse handoff and ran th rest of the way to make the score 13-6.
Early in the fourth quarter Barry Rafferty got a well timed interception to finish a good Bulls drive. The next Admirals possession got them into scoring range, but once again the bulls secondary performed well, defending a crucial fourth down pass. With six minutes to go the Bulls moved down the field with their rushing attack. The Cork defensive line lifted their game and managed to stop the Bulls offense in Admirals territory. With two minutes to go the Admirals gained two rushing first downs, which allowed them to kneel out the clock and end a close game which could really have gone either way.

Admirals 26-Rebels 28

On a great day for football the Admirals started off well, making the most of the good field and conditions to move the ball through the air on their opening drive for a David Lomasney touchdown pass to Dominic McHale. John Duggan kicked the PAT to make the score 7-0.
The Rebels first offensive play led to a turnover, and the visiting side extended their lead on the very next snap, Keith O'Callaghan rushing 17 yards for the score.
On the subseqent series the Dublin side managed to move the ball effectively. Running backs Sam Hodgins and Chris Winton providing much yardage. QB Andy Dennehy connected with TE Paul Smyth for a score, which was converted, 13-8.
A second quarter John Duggan interception gave the offense good field position. David Lomasney and Dominic McHale made the most of the opportunity connecting for their second passing score of the day, the PAT making the score 20-8.
After a good defensive series by the Admirals Hugh McBratney caught a short punt and set up the Cork attack in Rebels territory. Alain Pezeron broke free on a first down dive play and went the distance to make the score 26-8.
With time running out in the first half the Rebels used a balanced attack to drive downfield. Another passing score inside one minute to play in the half made the score 26-16.
After the break the Rebels received the kick and moved the ball effectively. The Cork defense stood firm in their redzone however and prevented the Rebels from narrowing the score gap. Paul Buchanan, Barry Rafferty and Hugh McBratney had great performances on defense in the second half for the vistors.
The Admirals offense was innefective on the next series, a first down penalty putting them in long-yardage situations.
The Admirals defense was again strong in preventing the Rebels from scoring on the next series. Now in the fourth quarter the Admirals offense managed only short drives, taking little time off the clock. Steve Archibald and Ross McCooey played well for the home side's defense.
Strong running balanced off with intermittent completions on the Rebels next attack moved them into scoring range. Chris Winton finally got the score the Rebels had been looking for, 26-22.
On the ensuing kickoff Dave Barrry had a fantastic return to the Rebels 40 yard line, giving the Admirals great field position once more. Strong defense again held the Admirals, Marcus Naylor intercepted a fourth and seven pass near his own goal line.
With under two minutes to go the Rebels stuck with the strong running that had brought them within reach, methodically moving downfield with runs, screens, and dump passes. Henry Wasserman turned a short pass into a long gain before Barry Rafferty made an spectacular touchdown saving tackle inside the 5 yard line.
On first and goal Paul Buchanan had a tackle for loss in the Rebels backfield.
On second and goal the Rebels fumbled, but the ball was recovered by offensive lineman Shane Campbell.
Third and goal, the Admirals defensive linemen, Patrick DuBoucher and Chris Gaughan stopped a QB sneak attempt inches short of the goal line.
On Fourth down with 15 seconds to play Sam Hodgins snuck over the goal line for the game winning score 26-28.

In an important divisional matchup the Vikings scored on their opening posession. Daniel Levy rushing for the score after Glenn Carr had important receptions on the drive. The Admirals offense responded well, coming out with a balanced attack. A superb deep pass to speedy wide receiver Dave Barry put the home side in scoring range before Shane Galway took a sweep and followed good blocks by Hugh McBratney and Rob Hennessey to the endzone for his first career touchdown. McBratney added the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 8-8.
On their next series the Vikigns moved downfield before the Admirals D-line stripped the ball from Levy and recovered to stop the Vikings drive. On this drive Alain Pezeron and Keith O'Callaghan had good yardage on the ground, and David Lomasney, throwing behind excellent pass-protection, connected well with Dominic McHale. The Admirals couldnt punch the ball in though and turned posession over on downs in the Vikings red-zone.
Another good defensive series, with good defensive work from Patrick duBoucher and Barry Rafferty forced the Vikings to punt. TE Hugh McBratney caught a Lomasney pass and broke tackles and scored on a 50 yard catch and run to put the Admirals in the lead.
Peter Lucey had an interception for the Admirals just before halftime, leaving the score at the break 14-8.
O'Callaghan gained some yardage on the ground after halftime before the Admirals had to punt. The Vikings had an effective drive, coverting a fourth down play on their way to a Carr receiving touchdown. On the conversion attempt QB J.P. Nerbun was ejected for spiking the ball on a defender, leaving Seamus Hogan to take snaps for the visitors.
Another ineffective attck meant the Admirals again had to punt. Now in the fourth quarter Seamus Hogan took the snap and darted around right end for a breakaway score, 20-14.
Lomasney and McHale gained passing yards, and Pezeron and Ger McGowan some rushing yards to put the ball in Vikings territory. Good defense lead to a fourth down situation for the Admirals which they could not convert.
The Vikings gained some first downs before a fumbled snap which was recoverd by the defense gave the Admirals the ball near midfield. O'Callaghan and Pezeron gained rushing first downs before McHale had a spectacular deep catch in traffic to tie the score at 20-20.
Now late in the fourth quarter the Vikings ran the ball effectively. Almost all yards coming from Seamus Hogan now playing QB. Hogan scored the go-ahead touchdown with a minute to play. An inadvertent whistle on the conversion after the ball had been fumbled meant the Vikings had another attempt which they converted, 28-20.
With under a minute to go the Admirals were forced to pass. An interception which was returned for a score ended the game with an important divisional win for the Vikings.

The Cork Admirals opened the game by moving the ball downfield with a balanced attack. David Lomasney connected with Dave Barry to put the home side in scoring range before Hugh McBratney found himself open in the endzone to receive the opening score of the day.
Defenses on both sides played well for the rest of the first quarter, with the DCU defense causing a turnover on downs and the Admirals defense forcing punts.
A John O'Sullivan interception set up the first Admirals attack of the second quarter, which was capped by a 2yd run by Alain Pezeron, which he converted to make the score 14-0.
The Admirals continued to play effectively in the second quarter with Keith O'Callaghan scoring on the ground and Dave Barry through the air.
A good series by the DCU secondary, including Willy Coyne, prior to halftime left the score at 30-0 entering the intermission.

An interception by the Admirals defense just after halftime allowed Pezeron to capitalise by scoring his second rushing TD of the day. Soon after, he added his third following a long reception by Patrick duBoucher who also caught the conversion attempt.
Running back Shane Galway had good yardage in the second half, setting up a short TD run by QB Lomasney.
Running backs Rob Lee and Ger McGowan each added one score in the fourth quarter.
Overall it was a good day for the Admirals, each member of the defensive secondary had an interception, and strong performances by Ross McCullagh and Paul Buchanan on the defensive line set the tone for the defense.
Despite the scoreline the Saints kept their effort up throughtout the game, and their high level of sportsmanship should be noted. Tight End Herman Zweer played a fantastic game, catching multiple passes from QB Geoff Coleman. Running backs Colm Bolger and Patrick Biggs also ran hard all day. No doubt the heat and lower squad numbers out of the college term hurt the DCU team on this occasion.

Shane Galway 30yd run, David Lomasney 2xpt

The Trojans began the game by moving into the Admirals half via inside runs and a good pass connection between QB#9 and WR#7. The home side defense stood firm however and a Patrick du Boucher sack ended the visitors drive. On the ensuing series the Admirals moved the ball with a combination of David Lomasney passes and Keith O'Callaghan runs, before Dave Barry caught a corner pass to score the first points of the game.
The home side defense again stood firm on the next Belfast attack,Martin Mulrey and Hugh McBratney giving good effort, and Belfast were forced to punt. Barry Rafferty picked up the ball inside his own 5 yard line, dodged defenders and folowed good blocks by Mulrey and Peter Lucey down the sideline for a 96yd punt return, the longest play in Admirals history.
Great blocking up-front by the offensive line (Chris Gaughan, Rob Hennessey, Paul Buchanan, Conor O'Sullivan and Rich Bos) laid the foundation for the ground game during the second quarter. Alain Pezeron ran in from 10 yards out following a good drive which featured a fourth and five conversion from Lomasney to O'Callaghan.
O'Callaghan added another score, from 19 yards, after Dave Barry set the offense up in the redzone.
The final timed play of the half was a pass interference call in the endzone, giving the Admirals one last chance form the three yard line, which Pezeron converted, 36-0 at halftime.
The Admirals good fortune continued after the break with Pezeron scoring on the first offensive play of the third quarter. The scoring margin dctated that the Trojans had to pass. Peter Lucey picked off a deep pass and ran 40 yards to the endzone.
Shane Galway ran hard during the third quarter and was rewarded with a 30 yard run to score the final points of the day.
The Trojans showed great heart, and battled throughout the game, despite travelling with low squad numbers. There were plenty of hard hits on show and also much sportsmanship. They will be a difficult opponent in the playoffs if they secure their place in the next few weeks.

Rory O'Neill 27 yard reception, David Lomasney 2xpt
Shane Galway 8 yard run, Patrick duBoucher 2xpt
4th Quarter
Rob Lee 26 yard run, Ross McCullagh 2xpt

An understrength Tallaght side found life difficult against the better numbers of the home side. The Admirals defense played very well throughout the game. Patrick duBoucher and Martin Mulrey were two of the standout defenders for the Cork outfit.
Offensively, a team record 12 players scored points during the game. Barry Rafferty had his second punt return touchdown in two games, while the Admirals running-backs combined for 6 scores on the day. David Lomasney connected with six different receivers during the game and extended his streak to five consecutive games with two or more scoring throws.
The Outlaws are a young side and kept their effort up throughout the game. If they continue to show this great effort next year they will certainly improve and be a competitive team in next years games.

Playoff game, Admirals 8 Rebels 6
Cork Admirals 8 - 6 Dublin Rebels
Sportslink, Santry, 22nd July 07

Scorers,
1st Quarter, No Scoring
2nd Quarter, REB Chris Winton 25yd run
3rd Quarter, ADS Keith O'Callaghan 16yd run. Alain Pezeron 2xpt
4th Quarter, No Scoring

Poor conditions on the day ensured that this semi final contest would be a hard, closely fought game. The first quarter saw teams trade punts numerous times. Although both rushing offenses did gain some yards, defenses stood firm and stopped drives. Martin Mulrey and Patrick duBoucher played well for the Admirals. Steve Archibald played well for the Rebels, recording an INT. In the second quarter the Rebels run game gained some yardage. Chris Winton was rewarded for his strong running with a breakaway score form 25 yards out, the conversion was not succesful.
A Peter Lucey INT near his own goal-line stopped another scoring chance the Rebels had.
The second half started in much the same fashion as the first, with both defenses on top. Paul Grogan for the Rebels and John Duggan for the Admirals punted for huge yardage throughout the game and placed both offenses deep in their own territory. Pat Quinn had an INT for the Rebels in their own red zone after a good Cork possesion. Dominic McHale had some good catches in the third quarter to keep drives moving. Admirals ball carriers gained some good ground yardage on the way to the Cork score, a 16 yard run by O'Callaghan, converted by Pezeron. Conditions deteriorated even further during the second half, and a soggy field made passing difficult. A fourth quarter Barry Rafferty INT ended a good Rebels drive, after Winton and Marcus Naylor gained some ground.
With two minutes to play the Rebels took over after a fourth down stop near their 30 yard line. Winton had a first down carry on the first play of the drive. Good defense by the visitors prevented the Rebels form advancing into scoring range. Good pass coverage by Peter Lucey helped win the ball back for the Cork side who were able to end the game with kneeldowns.
Both sides played hard throughout, and the game was played in great competitive spirit, even on a poor day for quality football.

1st Quarter: CA-Keith O’Callaghan 3yd run, Alain Pezeron 2xpt (8-0); UL-Seamus Hogan 5yd run, Chris Bassitt 2xpt (8-8).
2nd Quarter: No scoring.

4th Quarter: UL-Seamus Hogan 5yd run, 1xpt (14-22).

The University of Limerick Vikings defeated the Cork Admirals in Shamrock Bowl XXI, the Championship game of the Irish American Football League, in Limerick. Vikings running back Seamus Hogan won the Most Valuable Player award by scoring all three of the Vikings touchdowns. The result of the game, which was noted for its hard hitting football and high standard of play, was not decided until late in the 4th quarter when the Admirals, who held the lead twice during the game, had two drives stopped on 4th down by the Vikings defense.

Cork got off to a great start when kick returner David Barry took the opening kick-off back deep into Vikings territory. The Admirals threatened to score, after a nice drive, with David Lomasney conncecting with Hugh McBratney, but were stopped on the 15 yard line by the Vikings defense. The Admirals defense held the Vikings offence on their first possession of the game, forcing them to punt. The key play for the Admirals on the ensuing possession was a 40 yard draw play by full back Alain Pezeron which got them a first and goal on the Vikings 3 yard line. Two plays later, Cork’s Keith O’Callaghan got the first score of the game on a 3 yard run to the right of the Admirals offensive line. Pezeron got the 2 point conversion to make the score 8-0.

The Vikings got back into the game shortly afterwards. Quarterback Chris Bassitt led them down field on helped by running backs Andrew Gordan and Seamus Hogan, before Hogan scored a touchdown on a 5 yard run up the middle. Bassitt got the 2 point conversion to level the scores at 8-8. Both defenses dominated the second quarter in which there were a number of good defensive plays on both sides of the ball. Vikings defenders Eoin O’Sullivan, Declan O’Donnell, Damien Laffan and Alan O’Carroll made a number of key tackles. On the other side of the ball, the Admirals defensive line of Marcus Gates, Ross McCullough, Patrick duBoucher and Barry Rea forced some tackles for loss. With less than 5 minutes to go to half time, Vikings defensive back Daniel Smith got the first turnover of the day when he intercepted an Admirals pass at mid field. However, the Vikings missed a field goal and the score remained 8-8 until half time.

The second turnover of the game came on the first play from scrimmage after half time. Admirals linebacker Martin Mulrey recovered a Vikings fumble to give the Admirals the ball on the Vikings 20 yard line. The Admirals scored shortly afterwards on a pass from David Lomasney to receiver Dominic MacHale to give them a 14-8 lead. The Vikings then drove into scoring range getting a 1st and goal on the Admirals 5 yard line. However, a defensive stand by the Admirals, with good performances from John Duggan and Barry Rafferty, prevented a score after they stopped the Vikings on 4th down. The Vikings defense then ensured that their offense got the ball back in good field position when they forced the Admirals to punt after not picking up much yardage on the ensuing possession. This gave the Vikings the ball near mid field. Through runs by Bassitt and Gordan, they got to the 10 yard line. Then Seamus Hogan scored his second touchdown, running up the middle on a draw play and pushing the ball over the goal line as Admirals defenders attempted to tackle him. The single point conversion gave the Vikings a one point lead.

The Vikings defense stopped the Admirals again, forcing them to punt early in the 4th quarter. This time the Vikings went to the air with a long pass from Bassitt to receiver Marc Ashworth who was stopped on the Admirals 5 yard line by John O;Sullivan. On the next play, Hogan sealed the MVP award with his third score of the day, a 5 yard sweep to the right, which was also converted to give the Vikings a 22-14 lead. However, the game was far from over. Admirals quarterback David Lomasney led the Admirals on a long drive, during which O’Callaghan and Pezeron both contributed yardage. After O’Callaghan was forced out of bounds just short of the endzone, the Admirals looked like they would be sending the game into overtime with a first down on the Vikings 1 yard line. However, the Vikings defense came up with their best defensive performance of the afternoon and held them out on all four downs. The Vikings then tried to run out the clock on the ensuing possession, but were forced to punt after only picking up one first down. With just over 2 minutes remaining, the Vikings got off a great punt, pinning the Admirals back inside their own half. But the Admirals still had more than enough time to score. They picked up a couple of first downs, but were stopped on 4th down with less than 30 seconds remaining on the clock. The Vikings then kneeled out to win the first ever Shamrock Bowl.

Both teams contributed to a very successful game through their entertaining and sporting play. The attendance at this year game was higher than the previous two Shamrock Bowls. It was played in a specially constructed venue at the UL Sports Grounds with banked spectator stands on one side and temporary seating on the other.
