The Cork Admirals defeated the UL Vikings in the IAFL season opener at UL Sports Ground in Limerick. Both teams were strong on defense, but the difference on offense was down to a MVP performance by Cork running back Keith O'Callaghan The Admirals scored early in the first quarter when O'Callaghan took a hand-off from QB John Kenny and used his speed to get around the corner and outrun the Vikings defense. UL linebacker, Adam Culvertey blocked Iain O'Callaghan's PAT attempt, recovered the loose ball and ran 97 yards to score 2 points for the Vikings. The exchange student from Western Michigan University had his hand split open by the force of the kick, but still managed to return it for the score after which he had to leave the game for stitches. On their next possession, UL punted and O'Callaghan scored on a spectacular 70yd punt return. This time Iain O'Callaghan made the PAT to make the score 13-2. In the second quarter, UL quarterback, Ben Lanser managed to move his team into scoring range and Patrick Ryan made the score 13-5, just before halftime, with a 27 yard field goal. The second half turned into a defensive affair as both teams struggled to move the ball. However, towards the end of the third quarter, Cork managed to get their running game going and running back Sam Kidd scored on a 16 yard sweep right play. UL got some first downs in the 4th quarter through QB Lanser and running backs David O'Neill and Liam Ryan, but the Cork defense, led by linebacker Ciaran O'Sullivan and safety Ger Madden, kept them out of the endzone to make the final score 19-5.

The Cork Admirals beat the UL Vikings 13-0 in the IAFLs first ever game under floodlights on Thursday night. The game, which is was rescheduled from last month due to flooding, was played at UL Sports Ground as a night game with an 8pm kick-off. Conditions were very difficult and constant driving rain made the field very slippy and heavy and ball handling very difficult. However, both teams coped well and put on a show for the spectators who braved the weather. The Admirals scored early in the first quarter. They received the ball deep in their own half dand moved the ball through a combination of running backs Sam Kidd, Keith O'Callaghan and Jari Kinnunen. Keith O'Callaghan broke free on a sweep to score their first touchdown from 36 yards out. Iain O'Callaghan kicked the extra point. The remainder of the first helf was close with both teams having scoring chances. The Vikings missed 2 field goals including a narrow miss from 44 yard out. In the second quarter, Cork again got into socring range and John Kenny connected with tight end David Lomasney for an 8 yard touchdown pass to make the score 13-0 at half time.

Both defenses dominated in the second half. Adam Culvertey, Sean Walsh and Justin Flood played well for the Vikings and Alan O'Carroll, Chris Gaughan and Trevor O'Connell led the Admirals on defense. The Admirals had at least two clear chances which they failed to covert into scores. Vikings defensive lineman Sean Walsh recovered an Admirals fumble on 4th and goal to prevent one possible touchdown and the Admirals also failed to score when they attempted a to throw a touchdown pass from a fake field goal try. The Vikings best scoring chance came in the fourth quarter, but they were stopped when Cork defensive back Barry Rafferty intercepted a pass on the 5 yard line. Like the Dragons, the Admirals are now 2-0 for the first time in their history.

The game started badly for the Admirals who fumbled the ball on the Knights 13 yard line early in the first quarter. The Knights capitalized quickly, with fullback Bobby Murray scoring a one yard touchdown on the ensuing drive. The Admirals fumbled again on their next possession while attempting to convert a fourth down play near midfield. The fumble was recovered by Keith McBurney. The Admirals punted on their next possession and Ian McIlroy scored a touchdown with an 18 yard reception from Stephen McDowell after the running of David Wright and Bobby Murray got the Knights into scoring range. The Admirals managed to move the ball on their next possession, with Keith O'Callaghan and Martin Cole picking up yardage on the ground, however, Spencer McDowell intercepted John Kenny on the Knights 25 yard line to stop the drive and preserve the Knights 40-0 lead.

The Admirals got of to a better start in the third quarter, stopping the Knights on their first possession, then Keith O'Callaghan had a 40 yard punt return to give them the ball in mid field. However, Pollock struck again, intercepting John Kenny and returning the ball 55 yards for another Knights touchdown. Pollock capped a brilliant performance, getting his third interception on the Admirals next possession, this time on the Knights 47 yard line. The Knights then picked up a first down through David Wright and Paul McKillop scored his third touchdown of the game on a 19 yard reception from Stephen McDowell. The Admirals went 3 and out on their next possession, but got a break when linebacker Alan O'Carroll got an interception as time expired in the third quarter. However, in spite of a couple of good runs by O'Callaghan, the Admirals did not score. The Knights made the final score 60-0 when David Antuna scored on a 2 yard touchdown run. The Knights remain the only unbeaten team in the IAFL with a 4-0 record and the Admirals drop to 2-2. The 76 point margin of victory is the most by an IAFL team since the reformation of the league in 2001 and 100 total points is also an IAFL record. The Cork Admirals actually took the lead in the game, scoring on their first possession. A couple of first down runs put them in scoring range and they took the lead with a 12 yard run by Keith O'Callaghan. The Rebels blocked the extra point attempt and cornerback Kevin Finnegan returned the blocked kick 97 yards for a rarely seen 2 point return. The Rebels responded immediately, driving downfield on their opening offensive possession and scoring on an 11 yard run by QB Andrew Dennehy after gaining first downs through Simon Mackey and Brian Dennehy. Simon Mackey scored his first of 3 touchdowns at the end of the first quarter with a 1 yd run. Mackey got his second touchdown of the game on the Rebels next possession scoring on a 4 yard run after Andrew Dennehy completed passes to both Mackey and Fearghal O'Donnchu. Cornerback Pat Quinn, who had a superb game on defense picked off Cork quarterback John Kenny on the Admirals 40 yard line after the ensuing kick-off. Cork got the ball back shortly afterwards through a John Duggan interception and Sam Kidd turned it into a score with a 1 yard touchdown run. The Rebels scored again, this time a 1 yard quarterback sneak by Andrew Dennehy to lead 28-12 at halftime.

The Rebels turned up a gear in the second half, scoring a league record 60 points. Brian Dennehy scored his first of four touchdowns with a 1 yard run following first down passes from Andrew Dennehy to both Brian Dennehy and Simon Mackey. Mackey scored his third touchdown on the Rebels next possession on a 35 yard pass from Andrew Dennehy following a fumble recovery by Paul Smyth. Fearghal O'Donnchu scored a 91 yard run on a mis-direction play and Brian Dennehy scored on a 35 yard run to stretch the Rebels lead to 58-12 by the end of the third quarter. The Admirals managed to pick up a couple of first downs early in the fourth through running backs O'Callaghan and Wes O'Regan, but the Rebels defense led by Al Kelly, Kenny Hudson and Pat Quinn kept them out of the endzone. The Rebels next two touchdowns came through a 35 yard run by receiver Carl Faichney, an 8 yard reception by Marcus Naylor. Then Fearghal O'Donnchu scored on a 55 yard punt return before Brian Dennehy got his fourth and best touchdown of the game on a 65 yard run.

The Rebels now move to 5-1 in the league standings and the Admirals drop to 2-4. Next week sees a rematch of Shamrock Bowl XVII when the unbeaten Carrickfergus Knights visit the inform Dublin Rebels at Greystones RFC. REPORT:

Four touchdowns from Brian Dennehy and three interceptions from Kevin Finnegan helped the Dublin Rebels defeat the Cork Admirals at Greystones. The Rebels now leap ahead of the Carrickfergus Knights at the top of the IAFL and have guaranteed themselves a place in the play-offs. The Rebels got of to a good start, scoring on their first possession with a 7 yard run by veteran running back Brian Dennehy. Simon Mackey got the conversion to give them an 8-0 lead. The Rebels defense then forced the Admirals to punt. Cork defensive back Barry Rafferty intercepted a Rebels pass on the 42 yard line, returning it to the 12, but the Rebels defense, led by linebacker Kenny Hudson, prevented the Admirals from converting the turnover into a score. The Rebels replied almost immediately with a 39 yard touchdown pass from Andrew Dennehy to Carl Faichney. The second quarter belonged to the Rebels who scored two unanswered touchdowns. The first was an 8 yard pass from Andrew Dennehy to tight end Fearghal O'Donnchu. The second touchdown was a 9 yard run by Brian Dennehy which was set up when the Rebels recovered a Cork fumble on the Admirals 13 yard line. The Rebels came close to scoring again late in the half after Kevin Finnegan intercepted the Admirals in their own half, but the Admirals managed to stop them on 4th down deep in Admirals territory.

The Admirals managed to pick up some first downs in the third quarter with some runs by Sam Kidd, Keith O'Callaghan and Trevor O'Connell, but the Rebels prevented them from converting and yardage gains into scores. For most of the second half, the Rebels decided to change gameplans and used an unconventional run and shoot style offense with either 4 or 5 wide receivers on most plays as opposed to their usual strong ground game. The change appeared to work nonetheless. On their first possession of the half, Brian Dennehy, playing as a slot receiver pulled in a 40 yard touchdown pass from Andrew Dennehy which was converted by Marcus Naylor. The Rebels stopped the Admirals on their second possession of the third quarter when Darren Conway recovered a Cork fumble at midfield. The Rebels scored on their first play after the turnover - a 45 yard pass from Andrew Dennehy to Brain Dennehy which was also Brian Dennehy's fourth touchdown of the game. The Admirals were then forced to go to the air in order to try to move the ball, but quarterback John Kenny was intercepted two more times by Kevin Finnegan, the second of which was a spectacular catch at the Rebels 10 yard line which almost certainly prevented the Admirals from getting on the scoreboard. The Rebels final score of the game came towards the end of the fourth quarter, when receiver Carl Faichney, who is also one of the Rebels back-up quarterbacks scored on a 3 yard sneak which was set up by first down runs from Dennehy and Sean Shanahan. The Rebels return to the top of the IAFL standings with a 6-1 record. The Admirals drop to 2-5. The Admirals will play their final game of the season next week when they host the Dublin Dragons (3-3) at Pfizers Sports Grounds in Ringaskiddy, Cork (kick-off 2pm).

REPORT:

The Cork Admirals scored their highest ever points total in a 68-20 victory over the Dublin Dragons in Ringaskiddy. Four touchdowns from Keith O'Callaghan and three from Sam Kidd, both of whom had close to 200 yards rushing, were instrumental in sealing the win for Cork. The Admirals opened the scoring on their first possession, when after getting good field position after the kick-off, running back Keith O'Callaghan ran a sweep left into the endzone from 29 yards out. The Dragons responded almost immediately. Dave Wheeler returned the Admirals kick-off 70 yards to the Admirals 15 yard line and then scored on a 15 yard run on the Dragons first offensive play from scrimmage. The first quarter finished with the Admirals taking the lead again when, after picking up a couple of first downs, Keith O'Callaghan scored his second rushing touchdown on a 26 yard run.

The Dragons regained the lead early in the second quarter. After getting into the Admirals halve, running back Dave Wheeler scored his second touchdown of the game on a 4 yard run which he set up with a 25 yard first down run. Cork struck back almost immediately when Keith O'Callaghan scored a spectacular third touchdown on a 61 yard run which also took him over 100 yards rushing for the day. After the kick-off, Admirals linebacker Alan O'Carroll then recovered a Dragons fumble on the Dragons 21 yard line. The turnover was quickly converted into a score - a 21 yard pass from John Kenny to David Lomasney. The Dragons repeated the same mistake on their next possession. Admirals defensive lineman Trevor O'Connell recovered a fumbled hand-off to again put the Admirals in scoring range. Shortly afterwards, John Kenny scored on a 5 yard bootleg to make the score 34-14 in favour of the Admirals. The Dragons fought back and scored their third and final touchdown just before halftime - a 23 yard pass from Phil DeMonte, who was starting his first game at quarterback, to former starting quarterback Rob Olwill.

The second half belonged to the Admirals who, by now, where clearly playing their best ever game of football. The Dragons had the first possession of the third quarter, but Chris Gaughan recovered a fumble at mid-field for the Admirals to end the drive. Then Admirals running back Sam Kidd broke free to score the first of his three touchdowns from 51 yards out. The Dragons ended up on their own 2 yard line on their next possession and Admirals linebacker Ciaran O'Sullivan scored a safety for Cork after tackling a Dragons ball carrier in his own endzone. The Admirals scored again straight after receiving the free kick - Keith O'Callaghan got his fourth touchdown with a mazy run which he broke free to score on a 58 yard run. The Admirals got their second safety of the game on the Dragons next possession when a bad snap on a punt ended in the endzone. The Admirals scored again before the end of the third quarter -Sam Kidd's second touchdown which was a 30 yard run.

Sam Kidd capped a superb performance from the Admirals when he scored their final touchdown, his third of the game with a 26 yard run. The Dragons attempted to move the ball inside the final two minutes of the game, but were stopped when Barry Rafferty recovered a fumble to effectively end the game. Admirals Head Coach, John Stokes, was reportedly extremely happy with the Admirals performance. The Admirals finish their regular season with a 3-5 record. The Dragons, now 3-4, host the Carrickfergus Knights next Sunday at Lucan Community College.
