Vice Back with the Eagles
New and Familiar Faces on the Sidelines at Coosa
By Ashley Jones, Coosa Yearbook/Website08/06/2007 The soccer program at Coosa High School will be coming back next season a little different than when they left the field at the end of last year thanks to the appointment of two new head coaches. Coach Randy Vice will be coming back as the Coosa High School boys’ soccer head coach, and Coach Erick Hopper will be coming back as the Coosa High School girls’ soccer head coach.Coach Vice, who coached the CHS boys’ soccer team from 1988-1996 (simultaneously with the girls’ team for four years) retired briefly (117, 99, 22) in 2007 to watch his son pursue his dream of receiving a baseball scholarship. After his son received a baseball scholarship from UAB, Vice had some soul-searching to do. He was then approached by Coosa High School Principal Sam Sprewell, and Coosa Athletic Director Mike House and asked to coach the boys’ soccer team again. “The soccer program at Coosa has always been dear to my heart, however I wanted to be certain that I would be able to attend my son’s college baseball games, my five year old son’s t-ball and soccer games, and still have time to attend to my one-year old. I also had to consider that my daughter is a senior this year and is very active in extracurricular activities. After much prayer and discussion with my wife, I decided to take the helm of the boys’ team.” Coach Vice also explained the important role that Sam Sprewell and Mike House played in his decision to coach again. “Both Mr. Sprewell and Coach House have tremendous respect for the athletic programs at Coosa High School, I felt honored that they asked me back,” said Vice, “I am also very excited about working with the new girls’ head coach, Coach Erick Hopper.” Erick Hopper, a Shorter College graduate, will be the seventh girls’ soccer team coach in Coosa High School history. When asked of his expectations for the upcoming season, Hopper stated “I would like to have a winning season and a shot at the play-offs.”According to CHS soccer player Luis Hernandez, “Maybe Coach Hopper’s prediction will come true for both teams.”
