College soccer: Shorter men claim first-ever win

09/19/02
From staff reports

There are times when optimism always pays off. That was the case for the Shorter College men’s soccer team Wednesday afternoon at Grizzard Park when the Hawks, playing a junior varsity schedule in their first season of existence, claimed their first-ever win by handing Georgia Military College an 8-1 defeat. “Even though we had lost our first five games,” Shorter coach Gordon Leslie said, “we’ve stayed positive, trying to gradually improve. Today it all came together.” The Hawks’ offensive attack was led by Jaun Pablo Selle and Jean Paul Gulino, who had two goals each. Gabriel Katz, Ivan Mardones, Nick Smith and Renato Mizutani added one goal apiece. Shutting down GMC in goal for the Hawks was former Coosa High standout Corey O’Connor, who recorded seven saves. Shorter returns to action Wednesday visiting Reinhardt College.

"My motto was always to keep swinging. Whether I was in a slump or feeling badly or having trouble off the field, the only thing to do was keep swinging." - Hank Aaron
