COACH VICE RETIRES AFTER 18 SEASONS
Jeff Gable, Rome News-Tribune Sports Writer
Its one thing to say that your family matters more than anything else in life.
Its quite another to make career decisions based on that belief.
Long-time Coosa boys soccer coach Randy Vice found it harder and harder to split time between his soccer family and his real family, so he finally came to a decision this year to retire after 18 years of leading the Eagles program.
The veteran coachs final game was Friday night, when Coosa downed Adairsville 5-2.
It really wasnt bittersweet until the last whistle, Vice said of the final game of his coaching career. I looked at my assistant coach and just said well, thats it. It was actually a little bit sad for me.
However, no one can fault Vice for his reasons behind the decision to step down.
My son plays baseball at Westbrook Christian School in Gadsden, Ala., Vice explained. I tried to not miss any of his games this year, but Ive already missed three or four of them. I dont want to miss any next year when hes a senior.
And my wife is expecting again, he added. We lost a child about five and a half years ago, so I just really wanted to spend more time with her and my other children right now.
Sometimes, you just have to make a family decision. This was easy to decide, but its still tough to give up something you love like coaching.
Vice said watching an opposing coach in a game midway through this season cemented a decision that he was still wrestling with.
We were playing against Rome High in the Rome Classic Tournament, and I saw (Rome boys coach) Randy Nobles coaching his son, Vice said. That decided it for me. I realized after watching him coach his son (Aaron) that I needed to be home more watching mine.
Nobles is one of several coaches that Vice listed as friends in a profession where coaches must often act as counselors, bus drivers, academic advisors and friends to their players, as well as being their coach.
Its ironic that a lot of long-time coaches are retiring at about the same time, Vice said. Steve (Davis, of Rome High) stepped down last year and Randy (Nobles) is retiring, too.
Randy is a good friend, full of integrity. Ive learned a lot from him. And (former Darlington coach) Gordon Neville was an inspiration to me. He had so much class and he was always a gentleman.
Ive developed a lot of friendships in coaching, with those guys and others like Andy Arnold (at LaFayette) and Roger Lowe (at Cartersville).
Vice said while the games and seasons can tend to run together after a while, being involved with so many young players made his career a very rewarding one.
Looking back, while its hard to remember every kid you teach in class, I think I remember almost all of the ones Ive coached in soccer, Vice said. You think of all the good kids youve worked with.
Some former players were at the game Friday, and that made it even more special. And it was great having a former player (Chris Shephard) as my assistant this season.
While there were no state championships or victory parades in his time at Coosa, Vice said he didnt feel like he had to chase more wins to validate his career.
Im very comfortable with my decision, he said. Its easy when you feel that youre doing the right thing.
I just hope that down the line, I had a positive impact on the kids I coached.

Woodland 6 Coosa, 1
02/16/06 From staff reports
Coosa soccer coach Randy Vice wasnt happy with his teams 6-1 loss at Woodland Thursday, but satisfied that his team was improving by playing stiff competition. Woodland played really well, theres not much to say, he said. They played better than we did. I will say that Scott Rounds and David Guillen played well on defense. We didnt play but 13 guys. Michael Ray scored his first career goal on an assist by Jose Rivera in the 72nd minute for Coosas lone goal. George Galvis had nine saves and keeper Christian Roque had five in goal.

Coosa 6, Chattooga 0
02/27/06
From staff reports
The Coosa boys soccer team accomplished big things in a small amount of time Monday.
Fueled by a three-goal effort from Jose Riveria, the Eagles beat Chattooga 6-0 in an Area 6-AA/A game that was shortened to 60 minutes instead of the normal 80. The teams played two 30-minute halves in order to complete the match before dark. With the win, Coosa moved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in region play. The match featured one rather unusual statistic an assist by a goalkeeper. It happened in the second half when Coosa keeper George Galvis banged a long downfield kick and Frank Castro converted it into a goal. Castro also scored on a assist from Daniel Cruz late in the first half, giving Coosa a 2-0 lead at the break. Moments earlier, Riveria had broken a scoreless tie by scoring on a direct kick in the matchs 17th minute. In the second half, Riveria scored twice in a 10-minute span with David Guillen and Christian Roque getting assists to help Coosa pull away.
Daniel Cruz closed the scoring with a penalty kick with three minutes left.
COOSA TIES CALHOUN THEN LOSES ON PKS 0-0
By Jeff Gable,
Rome News-Tribune
The Coosa boys soccer team stretched the Calhoun Yellow Jackets to the limit Monday night, but Calhoun applied the bend-but-dont-break philosophy. After a scoreless regulation and overtime session, Calhoun finally knocked off the Eagles in a penalty kick shootout to earn an Area 6-AA/A win. Calhoun (5-0-1, 2-0) knocked home three penalty kicks to Coosas one to secure the victory. It was a great game, and Im very proud of our players for maintaining our strategey throughout the game, Coosa coach Randy Vice said. It was really a great match for both teams. I never believe in moral victories, but Im as proud as I can be for our guys, because Calhoun is one of the best programs in the state. Vice complimented the play of Coosa goalkeeper Jorge Galvis, who finished with 14 saves, as well as Kelly McMichael, David Guillen and Frank Castro. The Eagles (2-2, 1-1) will play against Rome on Wednesday in the Rome Classic Tournament.
EAGLES HAVE POOR SHOWING IN ROME TOURNAMENT
The Coosa boys soccer team struggled against Rome and lost 8-0 in the Tournament Opener. A 1-0 loss to Cedartown and a 1-0 loss to Ringgold ended the Tournament for the Eagles.
EAGLES FALL TO ARMUCHEE IN NON-REGION GAME
ROME NEWS-TRIBUNE Armuchee 2, Coosa 0 Colby Crowley snapped a scoreless tie with a goal in the 32nd minute and Cody Easterwood added an insurance goal two minutes later to lift Armuchee (6-3) to a non-region win. Armuchee keeper Marvin Armstrong and Coosa keeper George Galvis had eight saves each. Armuchee, which played a man down for the final 25 minutes, hosts NW Whitfield on Friday. Coosa (2-6) visits Model.
EAGLES CRUISE PASS MODEL
ROME NEWS-TRIBUNE Coosa 5, Model 0 The Eagles cruised to an Area 6-AA/A win over the homestanding Blue Devils. Michael Ray and Jose Rivera netted two goals each for Coosa (3-6, 2-1), while Daniel Cruz had a goal and an assist. Christian Roque had two assists, while Freddy Cornejo and Frank Castro had one each. The Eagles will host Sonoraville on Monday.
EAGLES DOWN SONORAVILLE
Coosa 7, Sonoraville 0
The Eagles (4-6) used a second-half assault to blank visiting Sonoraville. Frank Castro and Jose Rivera gave Coosa a 2-0 halftime lead, but a goal a minute into the second half by George Galvis opened the scoring door for the Eagles. Rivera, Cody Bishop, Daniel Cruz and Daril DeLeon rounded out the goal scoring for Coosa. Galvis and Cruz added two assists each, while Jose Cardebes had one.
Eagles knock off Armuchee in OT
Rome News-Tribune Local roundup 04/10/06
Randy Vice's final year as the Coosa boys soccer coach might just extend into the postseason. Coosa moved closer to a potential playoff spot Monday with a dramatic 1-0 overtime victory against host Armuchee in a critical Area 6-AA/A match. Freshman Michael Ray scored a goal in the fourth minute of the extra session on an assistant from Daniel Cruz to end it. "I can't say enough about how this team played," said Vice. "We had several guys who played their best match of the season, and some who played the best match of their lives." Coosa keeper Jorge Galvis had nine saves, several of which Vice called "just unbelievable." "This was a great match all the way around," Vice said. "Armuchee played really well." Vice said Frank Castro and Jose Rivera had strong performances, but "I almost hate to single anybody out because everybody did such a great job," he said. If Coosa beats Adairsville at home on Friday, the Eagles will likely qualify for the playoffs.
Eagles Lose a Close One to Darlington
03/22/05 Joseph Myers, Rome News-Tribune Sports Writer
With five teams battling for the top four spots in the Area 6-AA/A boys soccer standings, every win, loss and draw is magnified. Thats why as happy as Darlington coach Owen Kinney was after his teams 3-1 victory over Coosa on Wednesday at Darlington, Coosa coach Randy Vice was just as let down. I thought we gave a solid performance, especially on the defensive end of the field, said Kinney. I dont think our guys knew what Coosa would be doing and it threw them off. But we got some goals late and Im happy with how our guys played. Vice, whose team still has to play area matches against No. 8 LaFayette, No. 9 Model and Calhoun, didnt have much to say after the match. Darlington played very well as they always do, said Vice. I thought we played well, but we just have to learn from this match and get better. With the victory, Darlington (7-3-1, 3-1-1) moved into fourth place in the area standings behind Model (6-2-1, 2-0), LaFayette (10-2-1, 3-0-1) and Calhoun (4-6-3, 3-0-2). Coosa (4-5, 1-1) sits in fifth. What made the result especially hard to take for the Eagles was that with just over 10 minutes to go the match was tied at 1. But in the 69th minute, Darlingtons Jefferson Grizzard took a direct kick that a Coosa defender headed into his own net to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. William Richardson sealed the victory for the Tigers two minutes later when he scored off a cross by Graves Ethridge to make it 3-1. Prior to Darlingtons two goals in the final 11 minutes, Coosa had just tied the match at 1 in the 67th minute when Rodrigo Cruz took a Norberto Castenada pass and beat Darlington keeper Will Watters. I think Coosas goal sort of kicked our guys in the (butt), Kinney said. Darlington had taken a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Davis Grizzard scored off a pass from Richardson. Darlington is at Rome on Tuesday, while Coosa hosts Gordon Central on Friday.

Rome News-Tribune Staff Reports
The Eagles evened their record with a non-area victory in Summerville.
Rodrigo Cruz had three goals and an assist and Norberto Castenada netted two goals of his own for Coosa (4-4). Castenda,Cruz, George Galvis, Matt Staples, and Kelly McMicheal all had assists.
Christian Roque made six saves before giving way to Kelly McMichael, who had two saves in the second half. The majority of the time was played by Coosa's reserves (substitutes) who outshot Chattooga 15-3. The game was terminated in the 63rd minute due to crowd and game conrol issues.

The Coosa Eagles boys soccer team opened Area 6-AA/A play in fine fashion on Monday night, wiping out Chattooga 9-0 in a match at Coosa.
We played well in the second half, said Coosa coach Randy Vice. In the first half, Chattooga jammed the penalty box full of people and we got bunched up.
We talked at halftime about spreading them out and making them come out of the box. We did that and got some openings we were able to take advantage of.
Coosa (3-4, 1-0) got an own goal in the second minute to take a 1-0 lead, but the Eagles offense was stymied for the next 30-plus minutes as Chattooga keeper Jaime Mosqueda made save after save in goal.
The Eagles broke through again in the 33rd minute when Norberto Castenada took a Daniel Cruz pass and tucked it in under the crossbar to make it 2-0.
Cruz scored off a Roy Burkhalter pass just before halftime and Coosa took a 3-0 lead into the break.
The Eagles got things going in the second half, spending most of the 40-minute period in Chattoogas end and netting six goals. Burkhalter, Castenada and Jorge Galvis whod started the match in goal but moved out to a field position scored two times apiece with Scott Rounds and Galvis adding an assist each.
Galvis made one save before being lifted in favor of Christian Roque, who made one save to preserve the shutout.
Vice said that Area 6-AA/A which includes three state-ranked teams in Model, Darlington and Calhoun, newcomer LaFayette (which already has wins over Coosa and Darlington) and his squad is as deep as its ever been.
Its going to be a tough area this year, said Vice. Model is the best team and should run the table, but the rest of the field is a shootout.
We can play with most any of them, but we have to go in with our heads on straight.

The Wolves got two goals and an assist from David Guilford as they held off the Eagles.
Guilford got the scoring going in the 33rd minute off a Luke Robinson pass and he added an unassisted strike in the 43rd minute to give Rome (5-1) a 2-0 lead. Norberto Castenada converted a pass from Rodrigo Cruz into a goal to get Coosa (1-3) back to within 2-1 in the 77th minute, but Robinson added an insurance goal one minute later off a pass from Guilford to seal the victory. We played flat, said Rome coach Randy Nobles. We didnt have a lot of intensity like we should have. Were walking out there and taking things for granted and we cant do that.
Rome, which earned three points for its win and three more for its three goals scored, plays Armuchee on Friday.
Eagles Face Tough Back to Back Losses

Eagles fall to Wildcats
The Coosa Eagles soccer team has a tough Area 6-AA/A schedule as always, with the likes of Model, Darlington, and Calhoun on the slate each season.
However, head coach Randy Vice has never been one to shy away from tough non-area matches.
Coosa had just such a tough game on Saturday at home, where the Eagles lost to Fort Payne (Ala.) 3-1 on a breezy, spring-like day.
The loss comes on the heels of a 4-1 defeat on the road Friday at LaFayette, although the game with the Ramblers was also a non-area match. The two teams meet later this season in the game that counts.
Still, Vice said hes not too disappointed with how his team is playing right now.
I think were right there, Vice said. We just have to finish what we started. We scored first in both games this weekend, but we just have to finish out better.
Against Fort Payne, Coosas Noberto Castenada put the Eagles up 1-0 in the 17th minute. That lead stood up through halftime and into the second half, before the Wildcats notched goals in the 52nd, 63rd and 65th minutes to pull away.
Vice did not substitute much, wanting to see how much endurance his starters had.
I wanted to get a look at our stamina today, and I thought we looked pretty good, he said.
Jorge Galvis had eight saves in goal for Coosa (1-2), which plays Wednesday against the Rome Wolves in the Rome Classic Tournament.
I like getting to play in that, although we got a tough draw this week, Vice said. We get to play against some teams that we dont get to see on a regular basis. Playing teams like Rome, Gordon Central and Ringgold is good for us and a lot of fun.
On Friday, the Coosa Lady Eagles were shut out 9-0 by LaFayette. The Coosa girls visit Chattooga Monday before opening the Rome Classic Tournament Wednesday against Gordon Central.

Coosa 2, Armuchee 0

Erik Green, Rome News-Tribune Sports Writer
Greater Rome's top goalkeeper once again proved why on Tuesday. Coosa's George Galvis rolled up 19 saves in goal in the Eagles' 2-0 season opening win at Armuchee Tuesday. Still, if Galvis is the best, then Armuchee's Marvin Armstrong is not far behind. Armstrong had 27 saves and allowed just two goals to a Coosa team familiar with piling up the points. "If you like goal keeping, this was the game to see," said Coosa coach Randy Vice. "Both keepers did a great job." "I was really proud of the way both teams played." It was truly a defensive struggle all evening with neither team finding the goal for much of the game. Coosa's Rodrigo Cruz, in his tangerine colored shoes, scored the Eagles' first goal early in the second half. Coosa held the one goal margin for about 30 minutes before Jernays McNutt fired in a goal to make it 2-0. Both Coosa assists were by Daniel Cruz. "It was a well played game on both sides," said first-year Armuchee coach Don Betler. "They have a very fast team and took advantage of that speed. "They also have a great keeper and even though we had a number of shots you expect that every time he goes out there he will do his job." Betler is Armuchee's third boys coach in three years, but seems to have the talent to make a run at the region title. The Eagles are always a favorite to win the region crown, but with Model flat loaded, it could be a battle to the finish. "We've got a few things to work on," Vice said. "But it was a good way to start the season." The Indians (0-1) host Adairsville Thursday, while Coosa (0-1) heads to Chattooga Tuesday.
