Lady Broncos Travel to Rogers, Take Care of Business
Varsity- The Lady Broncos faced Rogers on a sunny, but very windy day, and earned a hard fought 1-0 victory.  Coops came out fast and had a great scoring opportunity less than a minute into the game.  The shot didn't go in, and the Lady Broncos would struggle to get the ball past Roger's keeper, who did a very good job of keeping the Lady Broncos off the board in the first 20 minutes.
The Lady Broncos did score a little later as Cassie took a nice feed from Ashley H. and sent it into the upper corner of the goal.  That would be the only goal scored, and the only one Coops would need as they battled very strong on the defensive side of the field to keep Rogers off the board.
This brings the Lady Broncos record to 3-0-1, which includes their perfect defensive record.  Mary played well in goal, racking up 6 saves in her 2nd complete game in goal this season.  The defensive squad played strong again, although Rogers did have a few nice scoring opportunities.
This was a tough game for the midfielders as much of the game was played there, and possession was sometimes hard to maintain.  Overall, it was a tough road test that Coops fought hard to win.  The Lady Broncos held a 14-6 shot advantage.
Focus now turns to the Invitational.  Players have 3 days to prepare for 2 games in less than 18 hours.  Coops faces Ottawa Hills at CHS at 7:00 PM on Friday night.  Fans are encouraged to show up and support the Lady Broncos program.

JV- The girls were a little nervous after watching the rough game the varsity was involved in.  However, the nervousness went away very quickly when Julie scored within the first couple minutes of the game.  Shelby then scored on a pass from Jess, to make the game 2-0.  Then it was Jessica's turn to score a goal after Stephanie provided her with an assist.  Julie gave Ber a nice pass and she slammed it past the keeper to end the scoring for the first half.  The defense was very stingy and didn't allow Nikita to touch the ball in the first half.
The second half started out slow for the Bronco's.  Then the girls began to get control of the ball and use their passing skills to take control of the game.  Julie had her second assist to Jess who scored her second goal of the game.  Caitlin crossed the ball from the left side and found Anna open in front of the goal and put it into the net.  Shelby had a chance to score on a PK but pulled it just wide right.  She didn't give up though she was able to find the net and scored the 7th goal.  Hannah moved up to the midfield position and was able to cross the ball to Shelby and she put her third goal for the night and final goal for the Broncos's.

Nikita and Tareyn combined for the third straight shut out.  They did receive great help from their defensive core.  They only allowed 3 shots total for Rogers.  Great job Sarah, Molly, Amber, Sam, Tareyn, and Hannah.  The girls are now looking towards the tournament this weekend.  Girls tonight's final rating was a 9, very proud of you all.

FHE Shocks Lady Broncos in Last Minute... Twice

By GREG CHRAPEK
Advance News

COOPERSVILLE - The way the Forest Hills Eastern soccer team kept cutting it close against Coopersville in Wednesday's O-K Rainbow soccer match, one would think the Hawks were old pros at overtime soccer.

Actually, the Hawks are anything but overtime veterans. In fact, Wednesday's match was the first time ever that the young Eastern soccer team had played overtime. Experience, however, can be overrated and the Hawks proved that was the case as they defeated Coopersville 2-1 in dramatic fashion.

Defense was the name of the game for the first 48 minutes of the match. The two teams played a scoreless first half with scoring opportunities being few and far between. The beginning of the second half brought more strong defensive play. With 32:13 remaining in the second half, Coopersville broke the scoreless drought. That was when Jesse Depender scored a goal with an assist from Ashley Platt off an indirect kick.

With a one-goal lead in the defensive struggle, the host Broncos tightened up their defense even more.

With 25 minutes remaining in the contest, Eastern came close to tying the match. With the ball deep in Bronco territory, Bronco goalkeeper Stephanie VanDoorn tipped an Eastern shot on goal that then deflected off the cross bar. Eastern then fired a rebound on goal that just went over the top of the net.

Dodging a pair of bullets, the Broncos redoubled their defensive efforts. Coopersville's defense and midfield kept the Hawks from getting many high-quality scoring chances as the clock wound down.

With less then two minutes remaining and the sun setting, the outlook was looking bleak for Eastern. That was, until freshman Caitlin McCarthy stepped up. With under a minute to play, McCarthy gained control of the ball about 20 yards from the net. Firing at an angle, McCarthy blistered a shot that snuck in just under the far-upper corner of the post tying the game at 1-1 with 59 seconds remaining.

"Caitlin just stuck it real well," said Eastern coach Paul Rosenbrook. "Caitlin is just a freshman but she is one of our leading scorers. She fights real hard for the ball and is not intimidated like a typical freshman. That was just a great shot."

The shot took the air out of the Broncos, who were just seconds away from securing the win. With momentum on their side, Eastern went into attack mode as the overtime session began.

The Hawks carried the play for much of overtime but the Bronco defense again proved to be a tough nut to crack. Again, the match appeared to be headed to a tie as time wound down in the first overtime session. With less then 30 seconds remaining in the match, Eastern made one final offensive push. Again, McCarthy was in the middle of things. This time, McCarthy worked her way into position to take a shot, and with 13 seconds remaining in the first overtime she fired home the game winner.

"This was the first time we went overtime in our program's history," said Rosenbrook. "We had no idea what to expect. We just came out and attacked hard. I felt like the late goal in regulation gave us momentum for overtime."

With the win, the Hawks improved to 2-1 in the conference and 5-1-2 overall.

"This is a big win," said Rosenbrook. "Coopersville is a team that always comes out and fights hard every game. They really fought hard tonight and we were happy to get the win."

Bronco coach Pat Harig was also happy with the effort put out by his team.

"It's hard when you give up a goal in the last 60 seconds of regulation," said Harig, "but I told the girls not to hang their heads. They did a great job. They stood toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the league."

With the loss, the Broncos fell to 0-2 in the league and 4-3-1 overall.

"We will build on this," said Harig. "This was Stephanie's first varsity start and I though she played outstanding in goal. Our defense did a great job except for two plays. They (Eastern) are a good team and that was a great shot to tie it."

West Catholic Hands Coops their First Loss
By Kelly Hill
The Grand Rapids Press

COOPERSVILLE -- Two games in less than 24 hours tested the endurance of the Coopersville soccer team last weekend. The Broncos played Friday night and Saturday afternoon in the inaugural Lady Broncos Invitational. They beat Ottawa Hills 6-0 Friday night, after West Catholic had beaten Kenowa Hills 3-0 in Friday's semifinal game.

West Catholic beat Coopersville 3-0 in the tournament's championship game Saturday. The Falcons jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and outshot the Broncos, 12-11.

"They outplayed us," Coopersville coach Pat Harig said. "They got to more 50-50 balls than we did and they had two good shots for goals in the first half."

West Catholic's third goal found the net after ricocheting off a Coopersville defender. "They had better touches on the ball," Harig said. "It was a good game, but they got the better of us this time."

Coopersville's best scoring opportunities came in the first half, before the Broncos tired. "It was even," Harig said. "We had some good runs; we had two or three real good chances. "Our team has been playing so well defensively but West Catholic's first two shots were for goals, and from close range. We weren't used to giving up those kinds of shots."

Despite losing in the championship game, Harig characterized the inaugural Lady Broncos Invitational as a success. "It was a good tournament," he said. "We had good weather and good attendance."

Harig expects the Lady Broncos Invitational to become an annual event. "We will do this again next year," he said. "We will probably get away from playing on Saturday, though. "We may go to Thursday night and Friday night, or maybe Wednesday night and Friday night, to give the girls a day between games. "There were some very weary legs by the time we got to the second half of Saturday's games."

Lady Broncos Get Back to Winning Ways
The Lady Broncos traveled to Godwin on a windy Monday and battled hard, eventually earning a 4-1 victory.  It wasn't always easy for the Lady Broncos in the first half as Godwin took the strong southernly wind at it's back, played hard, and made Coops fight for every chance they got.

Coops made some nice runs, controlled much of the play, and scored first as Amanda placed a nice shot past the keeper off a pass from Lorie.  Godwin tied the game on a penalty kick, and the score was tied 1-1 at halftime.  The defense played strong again, allowing only 1 other shot except for the PK.

Jesse D. started the scoring in the 2nd half as Coops came out with more intensity and determination.  AP made the nice pass that got Jesse in position.  Cassie then scored the first of her 2 goals, on assists from Sarah, Lorie, and Victoria.  The defense closed out the game by allowing 1 shot  on goal in the 2nd half.  Mary played the entire game in goal, stepping in for Stephanie who hurt her hand in warm-ups.

Every member of the team played and contributed to the win, which moves the teams record to 1-2 in league play, 5-3-1 overall.

Coops returns to league action on Wednesday when Rogers visits for their league game with the Lady Broncos.  Two weeks ago, Coops won a non-league contest at Rogers 1-0.  This will be another test for the Lady Broncos, who need to keep winning in the league to have any chance of winning the Conference.

Kick-off is at Coops at 6:45 PM.

Soccer popularity booms for Lady Broncos
By Kelly Hill
The Grand Rapids Press

COOPERSVILLE -- Coopersville's girls soccer program enjoyed a banner year last year and already is enjoying another.

The 2003 spring soccer season was a banner year for the Broncos as they finished their schedule with a record of 11-9, marking the first winning record in the history of the girls varsity soccer team at Coopersville.

As soon as it opened with practice less than three weeks ago, the 2004 season became a milestone year for girls soccer in Coopersville as the Broncos fielded a junior varsity team for the first time.

Coopersville also has established, for the first time, a junior high club team that is not supported by the school district, but which will play other middle school teams in the area.

The Broncos' varsity roster will feature 24 players, while Coopersville's junior varsity roster will include 20 players.

"We've got over 60 girls playing soccer this spring at the three levels, so that is extremely encouraging," said Pat Harig, who coaches the girls varsity soccer team in Coopersville. "This is the first year for the (junior varsity) team and for the junior high club teams. The club is going to get its feet wet and hopefully it can catch on and eventually we'll get a full schedule of games for them."

A roster of 24 players on a varsity team is rather large, but participation is being promoted by the school's administration and coaching staff.

"Continuity is a major factor in building a successful program," Harig said. "Having 24 on the varsity is rather on the high side, but we are looking at the participation level and all of these girls are enthusiastic and want to be involved in this, so we are going to encourage that."

After posting its first winning season in its history, the Coopersville girls soccer team graduated only two members last year.

"Last year was one of our better seasons in terms of wins and losses, and we only graduated two seniors, so we have about the whole team back," Harig said. "We also have a girl who transferred in from Kenowa Hills, another one who transferred here from Illinois and we also have an exchange student playing with us."

Defense may be Coopersville's stronger suit this season as the most experienced Broncos are playing at that end of the field.

Four-year starter Janelle, who was named to last year's O-K Blue all-conference team, will play in the center of the Coopersville defense this spring, while senior Amanda will be in goal for the Broncos for the second year in a row. Hannah, another four year starter, will play outside midfield.

"The rest of the girls," Harig said, "are all competing for spots at forward and midfield. We should have some good players at forward this year."

The Broncos opened their competitive season Monday night with a nonleague win over Sparta, 2-1.

"Our league title goes through Calvin Christian," Harig said of the O-K Blue, "until someone proves that they can beat them. I think we have the opportunity to do well against them, but they have a very good program".

Jr. High Wins Final Game of the Season
The Jr. High team played their final game of the season, and beat Hamilton on a wet, rainy day.
Jessica H scored Coops only goal, on an assist from Molly. The defense did a great job, as did the keeper in earning the shut-out.
This was a very successful year for the team, and the future looks bright for all of these players. They finish with a record of 4-6-1, but came back from 2 goals several times, and never gave up regardless of the situation.
The girls should be proud and pleased with the effort and determination this team displayed throughout their season.

     Well done, girls!

JV's Conclude Season with a 3-2 Win at FHE
The JV's ended their season in striking fashion with a win at FHE.  The team played strong, and held their ground defensively to pull out the victory.
Stephanie and Kita split time in goal, each giving up a goal, and played tough.  The defense and mids did well to mark hard and limit the quality scoring chances of FHE.
Offensively, many girls contributed as Coops pressed continually during the game.  Laura had 2 goals and an assist, and Heather had the other goal.  Assists were recorded by Amanda and Julie.  Overall it was a nice performance to end the season with.
Congrats to this team on their hard work and determination through-out the season.  It showed on the field, and many were impressed with your talents.
The final record was 6-5-5, a fine record when you look at playing a 16 game schedule and losing only 5 games.
     Again, Congratulations JV's!!!

Lady Bronco Season Ends in 2-1 Thriller
The game plan was in place, and the team played it with great heart and intensity.  The basic premise of the plan was maintained and executed, espescially by Lorie who was given the task of marking exclusively.  The plan did not include a fading shot, or a PK that was called as a result of what appeared to be a fair challenge.  Some things you can't control, and the Lady Broncos can't be faulted for their effort and commitment to following the plan.  It almost created what many would have called an upset, based on the records of each team.
The Lady Broncos MHSAA District game at Muskegon Oakridge on Tuesday started off on the right foot, of Lexie and Jess K, that is.
Coops scored less than 15 minutes in as the pressure applied was too much for the Oakridge defense and keeper, and Lexie's pass was banged in by Jess.  The defense, mids, and forwards kept the game at hand during the 1st half as they limited the Oakridge team to only average looks at the goal.  The score was in Coops favor at the half, 1-0.
The 2nd half saw Oakridge score less than 4 minutes in as a shot from 18 yards away found the inside of the goal.  After several nice runs and a few good scoring opportunities, the Lady Broncos were called for a foul and Oakridge was given a penalty kick.  After the goal it was 2-1 Oakridge with 20 minutes left.
Coops would offer 4 more very good scoring chances in the last 15 minutes, but was unable to get the ball into the goal.

The loss ends Coops season with a record of 11-7-1.  Many achievements and accomplishments were attained this season, and these girls have much to be proud of.

Tuesday, April 13
Lady Broncos Play Well in Wins

Both teams returned from spring break and were successful in controling play and bringing their records to 3-0.

Varsity
The team came out aggressive and played inspired, controlled soccer.  The result was a solid performance and a 8-1 win against GR Central.  The Ladies scored 6 times in the 1st half, with the starters sitting out 15 minutes.  The 2nd half saw the reserves play 20 minutes of solid soccer to start, then the starters returned to finish the game.
Lexie tied the school record with 4 goals, Theresa scored 2 goals (including her 2nd header of the season), Rochelle added a goal, as did Sarah B.  Hannah tied the school record with 3 assists, Lexie had 2 assists, Rochelle and Theresa also had an assist.
Amanda was strong in goal, only giving up a PK goal.  Sara A. played a strong keeper as backup.
Everyone contributed to this win, which moves their record to 3-0, and the team benefited by getting some work in after the long spring break.
The next game is Thursday vs. GR Creston.

JV
The JV ran to a 8-0 win which moves their record to 3-0.  This team also has yet to give up a goal in this young season.  They were in control for most of the game, which resulted in numerous shots on goals.
Goals were scored by Erin, Audra, Stephanie, Sarah, Amanda, Natalia, and Amber had 2 goals.  Assists were not tracked, but there were many.  Sami & Mary combined for the shut-out.
Congratulations to all the girls for their hard work and effort.  It shows on the field.

Lady Broncos End 4 Game Road Trip With 4 Wins
Both teams returned home unbeaten after beating GR Creston, setting up their first Home game of the season on Saturday with Grandville.

Kickoff is 10:00 for the JV's, Noon for the Varsity.

Varsity
The team came out fast, scoring 3 goals in the first 14 minutes of the game.  Coops had possession of the ball for most of that time, and controlled play.
Sarah B. led the scorers with 3 goals and 1 assist, Lexie & Theresa each had a goal and assist, Jessica D scored a goal, and Hannah added an assist.
Amanda earned her 1st shutout of the season, with the help of solid defense play from Janelle, Ashley, Marie and Amy R.

Every team member played in the game, and contributed to this win.

Thanks to the fans who have supported us these initial 4 road games, we appreciate your support.

JV
The JV's remain unscored upon, winning by a score of 5-0.  This team has outscored opponents 21-0 so far this season.
Thursdays goals were scored by Amanda, Amber, Audra, Lisa, and Sara.  Stephanie and Mary combined in goal for the teams 4th shutout.
The JV's have played solid defense that has allowed only a handful of shots in 4 games.
Congrats to the girls on their solid start to the season.

Grandville Ends Winning Streaks

Both teams saw their winning streaks come to an end, but the work ethic and refusal to give up was very noticeable.

Varsity - Grandville scored first on a cross that was directed into the goal by an unmarked player, then it was Coops getting on the board with a nice play by Sarah B, who knocked in a rebound past the Grandville keeper.  Grandville scored again late in the half for the 2-1 halftime lead.
Trailing 2-1, Coops came out and played its weakest half of the season.  Missed marks and misplays on defense created many opportunities for Grandville, and they capitalized, 5 times.
To their credit, the ladies played hard until the end and represented themselves in a sportsmanlike fashion.  Amanda did a good job in goal; most of Grandvilles goals came from close in and she couldn't save them.
Chalk it up to learning experiences, and the team will be ready to work on Monday in preperation for Wednesdays game at Home vs. GR Union.

JV - Grandville scored first in this game, and Jacquie scored for the Ladies to tie the game at 1-1, but Grandville added 2 more goals for the 3-1 halftime lead.
The Ladies did a good job of controlling the ball, and played a strong 2nd half, not allowing any more goals; Grandville also couldn't score and the halftime score was the final score.  Mary did a good job in goal, making numerous saves.
The Ladies play again on Wednesday at Home vs. GR Union.

Wednesday, April 21
Lady Broncos Rebound with Wins
Both teams returned to game action with victories over GR Union. Forwards and Mids dominated play, and were backed by stout defenses.

Varsity- The Ladies came out fast and scored 3 goals in the first 15 minutes of play, and controlled the ball with possession for most of the half.  Theresa, Lexie, and Sarah B scored goals in the 1st half; Assists were registered by Sarah B, Theresa, and 2 from Rochelle.
The 2nd half saw the wind pick up, which made shooting difficult in the 30+ mph winds blowing across the field.  Lexie added a goal for the
4-0 final score.
Amanda and Jessica K combined in goal for the shut-out.  The Ladies travel to Muskegon Oakridge for a 4:30 game on Friday.

JV
The JV's won 5-0 in a shortened match (due to Unions lack of players).  The girls maintained possession for most of the half, and all players participated.
The JV record stands at 5-1; and they return to game action on Monday vs. Rogers in the 1st ever Lady Broncos JV league matchup.

Varsity Beats Godwin in 2nd Overtime, 2-1

VarsityCoops traveled to Godwin and scored the game winner 4 minutes into the 2nd overtime to move their record to 2-0 in league play, and 7-2 overall on a very windy day.
The Ladies scored first in the 1st half; Caitlin fed a nice pass to Theresa who stuck the ball past Godwins keeper for the 1-0 halftime lead.
Godwin scored the game tying goal with the wind at their back and only 15 minutes left in the game.  Regulation ended with the score tied, 1-1.
Godwin won the toss for overtime and took the wind, but got no shots off in the 1st overtime, while Coops controlled play and managed a few shots but couldn't score.
Coops had the wind in the 2nd overtime and made a couple nice runs at the goal, the last of which resulted in a corner kick.  With 11 minutes left in the 2nd overtime, Sarah B took the corner kick and placed it in front of the goal;  Lexie kicked the ball which then deflected off a Godwin player and into the goal for the win.
Coops plays at home on Saturday vs. Kenowa Hills, then travels to Calvin on Monday to continue league play.

The Spoons Game
After eating tacos, chips, veggies, and other assorted nutritional foods,a game of spoons broke out at the team dinner.  Jesse was the unfortunate non-winner, and paid the price by eating, ok, tasting (or maybe only smelling) this concoction; then she displays her outlook on it.  Not to worry, she was fine. The look, however, is priceless.
Many thanks goes out to Sara A. and her mom & dad.  It was very nice of you to take the team in for dinner and some relaxation.  What a cool "barn"!  The food was great, and everyone had a good time.
     Smile, Jesse!

Friday, April 23
Lady Broncos Play Hard, Lose to Oakridge, 3-1
Varsity-
The team played hard through out the 1st half, and surrendered a goal with less than 30 seconds left in the half.  Coops did well in limiting Oakridge's shots, and the goal was a flukey thing.
Nine minutes into the 2nd half, Lexie crossed the ball in front of the goal and Sarah B. carried it in for the tying score.  It was the prettiest goal of the game by far.
Oakridge scored again on a strange play as Amanda came out to play the ball, it got knocked by a scramble of players and bounced off the post, backwards, and into the goal.
The final Oakridge goal came as the Ladies were pressing to tie the game.  Coops had several good chances in front of the goal, but was unable to score.  Oakridge moved downfield and shot a ball that rolled past Amanda as she was trying to get back into position.
The girls played well, and the support from the bench was outstanding.
The real season starts on Monday when Coops travels to Rogers to begin league play.  Varsity kicks off at 4:00, with JV following after the completion of the Varsity game.

CHALKED!!!

Some team members decided to have some fun, and the results were funny, except who would dare to chalk the coach's house???  Other team members were also targeted; no injuries were reported!

Monday, April 26
Lady Broncos Varsity Wins League Opener 2-0
Varsity - Coops traveled to Rogers to open league play and came home a 2-0 winner.  The girls controled play for the majority of time, and had 23 shots on goal while holding Rogers to 3 shots on goal, only 1 of those in the 2nd half.
Sarah B started the scoring just 2 minutes into the 2nd half, driving the ball in the goal off a nice pass from Rochelle.  Sarah B added the insurance goal with 22 minutes left on a rebound.
The defense played well, keeping any Rogers runs from becoming serious threats.  Amanda stayed in goal, most of the time, and earned her 3rd shutout of the season.
The Ladies travel to Godwin on Wednesday to continue league play.

JV - The JV's played hard against a good Rogers team.  They had their chances, but Rogers keeper made a couple nice saves, and the girls missed the goal on a few good scoring chances.
Coops allowed 2 unmarked girls to score, one in each half, for the 2-0 final.  The team battled hard in the strong crosswind, and created some chances in the 2nd half, but missed the mark.
The JV's next game is Saturday vs. Kenowa Hills.  Kickoff is at 10:00 AM at Coops.

Monday, May 10
Lady Broncos Play Well vs. West Catholic
Varsity - The Ladies surrendered the 1st goal just 10 minutes into the game, but came back strong.  Hannah scored off a corner kick from Lexie, and Caitlin lofted a shot into the goal after Lexie passed her the ball for the 2-1 halftime lead.
Sarah B scored off Lexies 3rd assist of the game just 4 minutes into the 2nd half.  West scored 6 minutes later to narrow the score to 3-2, but Sarah B scored her 2nd goal of the half off a nice pass from Sara A with 22 minutes left.  West closed out the scoring with 17 seconds left in the game for the final 4-3 score in favor of Coops.
This was a good return to action for the Ladies; playing a good team on the road, and battling for the win.  Coops record moves up to 10-3, and they return to league action on Wednesday at home vs. Rogers.

JV - The JV's gave up the 1st goal, but came back and scored the tying goal in the 1st half with Jacquie hitting a nice shot.  Both teams had chances to score but were unable to find the goal.
Coops went ahead in the 2nd half on a goal by Amber, but West scored the tying goal with under 10 minutes to play.

Varsity Beats Kent City, JV's Play Tough 2nd Half
Varsity - Coops moved their record to 9-3 (3-1 in league play) by beating Kent City 8-0 at Coopersville.
The Ladies got started quickly, scoring three goals in the first 8 minutes of play, all by Theresa.  Assists were dished out by Sarah B, Lexie, and Hannah.  Katy C. drilled a nice shot into the corner of the net off a pass from Danielle V. for the 4th goal, and Theresa scored her 4th off assists by Lexie and Sarah B.
The 2nd half saw Coops continue in the scoring column with a goal by Sarah B, followed by a nice shot by Hannah assisted by Sarah B, Rochelle closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal.
Theresa tied the school record with 4 goals in a game, and Sarah B. tied the school record for assists in a game with 3.  Amanda earned her 4th shutout of the season in goal with the help of a strong defensive effort from Janelle, Marie, Ashley, Danielle S, and Katie V.  Great effort Ladies.

JV - The JV's played hard soccer against a physical and talented Hamilton team that should be playing a varsity schedule.  Hamilton was supposed to come into the league as a varsity team this year, but decided to remain a JV team for another season.
The JV's allowed three 1st half goals, and the halftime score was 3-0.  The 2nd half saw the JV's score a goal on a breakaway by Jacquie.  Sami did a nice job in goal in the 2nd half shutting down Hamilton.

Both teams return to action on Monday at West Catholic.

Calvin Takes Two from The Lady Broncos
Varsity - Calvin controlled play and passed precisely in handing the Ladies their first shut-out loss of the season.  Calvins strong midfield play, as well as their speed were major factors in limiting the Lady Broncos to only 5 shots on goal.
Amanda played well in goal, and the defense, especially Janelle, played a strong marking game, but Calvin was too much for them today.  Jessica K. injured her knee in the game, and will require some rest to heal her knee.  Hang tough Jess!
Coops record drops to 8-3 overall, 2-1 in league play.  Kent City comes to Coops for another league game on Wednesday, as the Ladies will look to rebound from this game.

JV -  The JV's let a goal in in the 1st half, and it stood up as the final score.  Calvin 1, JV Ladies 0.  Coops dominated play on Calvin's side for a good deal of time in the 2nd half, but was unable to score.
The team held together and made some nice plays, and continues to improve and impress.  Great effort girls!

Both Squads Beat Kenowa
Varsity - The Lady Broncos played well again, possessing the ball, and controlling the tempo of the game.  Defense did an outstanding job of limiting Kenowa's chances by playing hard nosed defense.  Amanda played well in goal, stonewalling several point blank shots.
Hannah started things off by passing to Sarah B. who slammed the ball in the net.  Jenny L. scored her 1st goal of the season off a combination pass between Lexie and Sarah B.
Kenowa scored to start the 2nd half, but the Ladies responded with goals from Sarah B. and Theresa.  Lexie added both assists, with help from Sarah B. on the last.
All players got a lot of quality playing time & good experience.

Next up is Calvin Christian on Monday @ 4:00 at Calvin.  Their field is NOT at their school; consult the map at the bottom of this page for directions.

JVThe JV's had a 1-0 lead at halftime, and did well in moving the ball upfield and creating opportunities for scoring.  The team played solid defense in shutting down all of Kenowa's advances in the first half.
The 2nd half showed both teams scoring goals; but it was the Ladies that held on and refused all chances for any further scoring by Kenowa.  This team continues to improve and compete in each game they play.  Great job JV's!
The JV's next play on Monday @ 5:30 at Calvin.

Varsity Finishes League Play With 6-2 Record after 8-1 Win
The Lady Broncos traveled to Kent City and played their last league game of the season, scoring 8 times while allowing one. The win leaves the Ladies with a 6-2 record in league play this season, their best yet, and brings their overall record to 13-4.
Coops scored the first 2 goals (Lexie & Theresa). After Kent City scored to make it 2-1, Coops tightened down on defense and gave very few decent looks at the goal. Hannah scored a long range shot on a free kick, and yes Hannah, it was 40 yards. Theresa closed out the 1st half scoring her 2nd goal. Lexie & Sarah B recorded the 1st half assists. Amanda played well in goal.
The 2nd half saw some different combinations for the Ladies as players played in different positions, and everyone got some decent playing time. Sami played the 2nd half in goal and kept KC scoreless, Amanda moved out of the goal and scored a goal and an assist. Jenna scored a goal on a nice pass from Sarah B, and Theresa & Lexie added the other 2nd half goals. Jacquie added an assist in the half also.
The Ladies are home on Wednesday for the last regular game of the season. The opponent will be Covenant Christian, kickoff is at 4:00 PM.

JV's Conclude Solid Season
The Jv's played their final game on Monday, bringing their 1st season to an end.  The team played well in this first season finishing with a record of 7-6-2.
These girls played hard all season and did a great job of representing Coopersville on the field.  They played to the best of their abilities all season, regardless of the situation.  This team has set the mark for future Jv teams at Coops, and we look forward to watching as these girls improve during the off-season and prepare for the next level or next season, whichever it may be.
Congrats to our Jv's, you were fun to watch, and deserve all the recognition you received for your hard work.

Lady Broncos Finish Season With Overtime Heartbreaker

Coops season ended tonight on a shot from 20 yards away that floated into the goal.  Oakridge scored 10 minutes into overtime, ending the Lady Broncos most successful season ever with a record of 15-5.
Coops had chances to score, and outshot Oakridge 15-13 in the game.  Coops played extremely hard and left it all on the field, as they have every game this season.
The defense did an outstanding job of marking, and the midfielders played hard on both sides of the ball.  Amanda was outstanding in goal, giving Coops the opportunity to win by shutting down any chances.
Congratulations to our seniors; Amanda, Danielle, Hannah, Janelle, Jenna, Marie, & Nikki.  We will never forget you, or the contributions you've made to this team and our program.  We wish you the best of luck in all that you attempt in the future.

Lady Broncos Wrap Up Regular Season; Beat Covenant Chr.
The Lady Broncos finished the regular season with a win at home over Covenant Christian.  The team saw plenty of playing time as our seniors started both halves as a tribute to them and their contributions to the program.
Coops scored the first 2 goals of the game on scores by Jacquie and Lexie.  Sarah B had both assists.  Covenant scored the next goal when they outnumbered the Ladies in the box.  Sarah B closed out the half with 2 goals for the 4-1 halftime lead.  Danielle V. and Danielle S. each registered an assist.
The second half saw Covenant score 2 goals to close the lead to 4-3, but Coops maintained composure and created some nice opportunities that just strayed a little ways from the goal.  The Lady Broncos outshot Covenant 20-14.
The Ladies finished their regular season with a record of 14-4; and the fun is just beginning.  Coops is at Home for the state tourney opener on Tuesday vs. Orchard View at 5:30.  Come out and support the Lady Broncos in their quest for the District Title.

Coops Controls Play, Win 3-0
The Lady Broncos came out ready to play, and kept pressure on Rogers for most of the 1st half as they took a 1-0 lead 19 minutes into the game.  Coops took 17 shots in the 1st half as they played inspired defense on the entire field.
Cassie scored her goal by knocking down a pass and firing a 25 yard shot at the goal as the keeper was trying to get back in position.  The shot floated into the net, and the Lady Broncos picked it up another notch.
The 2nd goal came from AP after she took a very nice pass from Jesse D and buried it in the corner.  The defense continued to hold Rogers advances and limited them to 1 shot in the half.
The 2nd half brought more of the same; Coops began pressuring the Rogers defense with controlled passing and runs at the goal.  Jesse D broke into the goal column, after she dribbled around Rogers side for what seemed like a long time, with a pretty shot.  That ended the scoring, but the Lady Broncos continued to play aggressively.
Each team member got on the field and contributed to preserving the Lady Broncos 6th shutout of the season.  Great job Defense, your communication was much improved.  This also was a break-out game for several players who played their best game of the season so far.  It was a great team effort; one that will be needed on Friday when the team travels to Zeeland West for a non-league game.

Lady Broncos Battle Zeeland West to 0-0 Draw
Varsity -     The Lady Broncos traveled to Zeeland West on Friday and played another very tough game defensively, earning their 7th shutout in 11 games played this season.  Mary was outstanding in goal, registering 12 saves.  Two of those saves could have been goals if not for her athleticism which allowed her to make very special saves.  Sarah, Ashley H, Amy, and particularly Erin played another strong game with tight marks and quick response to Zeelands advances.
This game was not just about the defense though, as Coops had their chances as well to bring home the victory.  Twice in the final 7 minutes, the Lady Broncos had serious scoring opportunities the last of which was Jesse's shot from 25 yards out that just missed the right post.
The midfield played a very nice 2nd half, after struggling in the first 40 minutes of the game.  They carried well and made some nice runs at the defense, which opened up some other runs.  It was nice to hear them communicating on the field.
The Lady Broncos record now stands at 6-3-2.
Overall, it was a well played game by both teams.

JV -  The score ended in a 1-1 tie against Zeeland West.  Julie gave the Broncos their lone goal from a strike just outside the 18 yard line.  Zeeland’s keeper wasn’t able to keep control of the shot and allowed it to sneak in just inside the left post.  It was a very physical game but both teams were up for the task.  It became a defensive struggle as Zeeland West was able to get some shots on goal but Tareyn came up strong and didn’t allow any other goals in.  The defensive core stood their ground and played extremely well.  Our forwards were at a disadvantage because they were outweighed by twice their size but they didn’t let that deter them from getting some scoring chances.  Our midfielder’s did a nice job of controlling the ball.  I was very pleased to walk out of there with a tie.  We now get to look forward to playing Calvin on Monday.

Calvin Too Much to Handle
Varsity - Calvin came to Coops and won most 50-50 balls, was quicker to passes, and created more scoring opportunities as they ran to a 4-0 win.  A missed mark created Calvins first goal, which held until halftime with the score 1-0.
Calvin came out in the 2nd half and pressed again, creating openings and when their forwards crashed, they slammed home the 2nd goal just 4 minutes into the 2nd half.  It took them 10 minutes more before they would score their third goal on a corner kick that no one touched.  The 4th goal came on a deep shot that was just over Kita's head.
Their were some positive moments in the game for the Lady Broncos.  They made some runs that opened things up a little, but by then it was too late.  The defense played well in parts, but Calvins quickness to the ball frustrated the team at times.
The team travels to Wyoming Park on Wednesday for a match, one which could decide the 4th seed for the tournament.  The Varsity is playing first due to a school event; kick-off is at 5:00 for Varsity, 6:45 for JV.

JV -  The girls came out a little flat and not really ready to play.  Calvin on the other hand was ready to go at the sound of the whistle.  The girls picked up their play through the first half but unfortunately they left their mark on a cross and Calvin was able to knock it past Tareyn.  The defense then tightened up and didn’t allow another opportunity for Calvin the rest of the half.
In the second half the girls began to put together some passes and made some nice runs at the Calvin defense.  They had some good scoring chances but were not able to get it past Calvin’s keeper.  We had a couple of miscues and unfortunately Calvin was there to capitalize on two of them, making the final score of the game 3-0.  The girls play did pick up in the second half and improved their rating from a 3 to a 7.  They now turn their focus onto Wyoming Park for Wednesday.

Lady Broncos Tie Hamilton, 1-1

The Lady Broncos hosted Hamilton in what became a very unusual game.  The game was played in a steady downpour, at 4:00 PM, in front of a small group of fans who braved the 40 degree temperatures and a strong wind out of the south.

Both teams had chances in the first half, but both keepers made key saves to keep the game scoreless at halftime.  Again, the weather was horrible, but the field was in perfect condition for play.  We really are fortunate to have such an outstanding facility.

The teams came out in the 2nd half and played back and forth in the midfield, with each team creating a few chances to score.  Hamilton scored their only goal on a play in which the Hamilton player carried around the field from the right side, passed to a player on the left, who then drove downfield and fired a shot on an angle past Mary.  Hamilton would keep the lead until late in the game.

With time running down, and the chances becoming harder to come by, Coops pressed upfield and tried to create opportunities.  That opportunity presented itself, and with 1:17 left on the clock, Amanda stuck a shot from the 18 into the far corner of the goal for the 1-1 tie.  Cassie and Mary had the assists for the goal, but Mary started the play by winning the punt from the keeper, and carrying it up before passing to Cassie.  No other chances were had for either team as time ran out.

Overall, it was a difficult game to play due to the conditions but the team stayed with it and never quit.  That's what is most impressive about this game; down by 1 and score in the final minutes to get the tie.

Coops travels to Sparta on Monday for their final league game of the 1st round.  After that, it will be the Conference tournament.

The JV game was cancelled due to Hamilton not being able to field enough players for the game.  They had another school commitment.

Vandals Strike Varsity Coach's House, Investigation Begins
Vandals struck the Varsity Coach's house on Friday night, while he was enjoying the company of the other coaches at a local restaurant.  These vandals will be found and punished to the extent of the law.
Different types of plastic eating utensils were used to harm the grass, which is really assault with intent to harm, so I'm pretty sure these criminals will have to do some hard time when they are caught.  They also chose the not-often-used Fruit Loops with marshmallows on the driveway and in the grass.  This has been determined to be a deliberate attack on the birds that reside in the entire Coopersville area, and since that includes Robins (the State bird, duh?), pretty sure that's a huge crime.
Watch soon for these people to be on Americas Dumbest Criminals, since they left the boxes to the utensils and the bag used to hold the Fruit Loops at the scene.  Fingerprints are being pulled from the bag and boxes for identification.
The Coach is glad that no one was injured in this incident, and hopes that his players weren't involved in any way, shape, or form (pretty sure they were).
It's already been learned that a group of players went out to eat after the game last night.  They have become the leading suspects due to the whole group element, and the past history of some of the participants (chalking, crank calls when the coach has caller ID, etc...).  However, no one has been ruled out of this attack on the coach's property.  The blades of grass were actually wet with tears this morning from the pain of being stuck with a plastic knife.

Lady Broncos Season Ends in Overtime, 2-1
The Lady Broncos battled Shelby on Tuesday and struck early.  With just over three minutes gone, AP knocked in a goal for the early lead.  Play moved back and forth, across the field, with both teams getting some good looks at the goal.  Shelby tied the score just 13 minutes later on a cross that was knocked into the goal.

The 2nd half saw both teams make some runs at the goal.  Neither team would score, the game was tied at the end of regulation, and the game went into overtime.

     Imagine that!

This team has been involved in more ties this season when compared to the previous seven seasons the Lady Broncos have played as a school sport.

Shelby scored the game winner late into the 1st overtime.  The girls played hard until the end, and left it all on the field; cliches, I know, but seriously, they did.

Mary played outstanding in goal, making a couple saves that literally kept us in the game.  The defense (Ashley H, Amy, Sarah, Erin, Geena) did well to limit the quality of chances that were given to Shelby.

The mids and forwards worked hard to create some chances, but bounces didn't go our way offensively.  The hard work was there, as always.  Finishing was again a problem, and it showed with only 8 shots on goal.

Thanks to our fans, parents, and you JV girls who attended; we all really appreciated the support.  We could hear you!

Varsity Wins in 1st Round, Beats Park 3-1
Varsity - The Lady Broncos had a chance to redeem their poor play at Park last week, and they played a completely different game.  Coops came out and controlled the flow of the game for the majority of the first half.  Their was some back and forth action, but for the most part they were content to hold possession and take chances.
After making numerous runs at the goal, with shots that rolled just wide or hit the post, Lorie scored for the Lady Broncos after receiving a nice pass from Mary & Amanda.
Except for 1 play by Park late in the 1st half, which gave them their goal, the defense played very well and controlled the defensive third of the field for most of the game.   Caitlin tried to hold the mark, but the Park player made a very nice header into the net.  Sometimes that happens.
Coops came out after halftime and played 10 minutes before Mary hit Lori again, and that gave Coops a 2-1 lead, against the wind.  The defense continued to play well, moving the ball up to the mids, and sometimes forwards.  Lorie and Mary connected for a third time, with 22 minutes left for the 3rd and final goal.
Great job by the mids to create nice runs and balls that could be handled.
Kita and Stephanie shared time in the goal, and both played very well, keeping everything that Park threw at them out of the goal.
Coops outshot Park 26-10, and did a particularly good job of crashing the goal on every shot that was taken.
With the win, the Lady Broncos move on to the Champion side of the bracket, and will travel to Calvin on Monday to play in the Semi-Final.  The Varsity game is at 4:00 PM, followed by the JV afterwards.
Calvin is always tough, let alone at their field.  It will test the teams ability to compete with a strong program, and it's a challenge that the teams should appreciate.  It'll definately be fun to play the best.
We invite all the fans to make the trip and show your support for the girls as they battle for a spot in the tournament championship.

JV - The JV's gave up an early goal to Park, which seemed to wake them up.  They came out and scored the next 5 goals for a 5-1 victory on a rainy Thursday.

Monday, May 22
Lady Broncos to Play for 3rd Place in Tourney
Coops traveled to Calvin and found out early that Calvin was playing for real.  Calvin scored two minutes into the game, and ran the score to 3-0 by halftime.  They were quick to the ball, and controlled much of the play.
The Lady Broncos settled the ball a little in the 2nd half, and although they didn't get any really good looks at the goal, they did possess the ball more, and managed a few opportunities deep in Calvin's territory.  Calvin's defense was stubborn and kept the ball away from the net.
The defense did a nice job, considering they were under fire for much of the game.  Stephanie started in goal, but was injured shortly after the first goal.  Kita replaced her and played the rest of the game, giving up 3 goals on 25 shots.
The Lady Broncos will play on Wednesday at Cedar Springs for 3rd place in the conference tournament.  The tentative schedule has JV playing at 5:00 and Varsity at 6:45.

Lady Broncos Fall to Cedar in OT
The Lady Broncos played Cedar to a 1-1 tie in regulation, after playing well and battling tough.  Control was spread out during the entire game, with both teams making runs at the goal and taking their shots.
After playing to a 0-0 score in the 1st half, Cedar scored 5 minutes into the 2nd on a free kick from 30 yards out.  Cedars player struck a high, driving shot that sailed just under the crossbar for the 1-0 lead.  The score remained until Laura was taken down on a hard foul inside the penalty area with 9 minutes remaining.  AP stepped up for the PK and buried it into the lower left corner for the game-tying goal.
Overtime began and Cedar applied heavy pressure to the Lady Bronco defense.  A misplayed ball created a scoring opportunity for Cedar, and they capitalized by putting the ball into the same left corner that AP used.  This is the 2nd league game that Coops has lost in OT this season.  The Lady Broncos finish with 4th place in the league.
This game was one that the Lady Broncos played extremely tough in, displaying high energy and intensity.  The level of play was impressive, and the team played well enough to win.  The defensive breakdown at the end was unfortunate, but shouldn't take away from the teams outlook on the effort and determination they displayed while playing against a very skilled team from Cedar Springs.  The level of play continues to rise with each game played, and the team should be confident heading into the tournament.
The focus now turns to the MHSAA tournament and Shelby.  The Lady Broncos will play against Shelby at Shelby on Tuesday at 6:00 PM.  Win and move on, or lose and be done; it's that time of the season.  If the team brings the same level of intensity and effort to Shelby, it could be an interesting run in the tournament.  Make plans to come support the Lady broncos on Tuesday as they battle for the opportunity to continue playing.

Are you Serious!!!

Shoes in the mailbox, pressbox, around the basketball pole, the picket fence, shoes in the tree.

Who would believe that just two days after being given absolution for a previous crime, some girls would return and commit it again?

Could it be to out-do the JV girls who got their coaches house?  Or could it just be that these girls like to be funny?

Unbelievably, the group came back and forked the Varsity Coach's homestead again.  To their imaginative credit, they also found time to hang (Sarah Jane) some shoes in the front tree.  Some of these individuals even left a calling card or two (Jessey & AP) as they left names on shoes and obvious markings on shin guards.

Fortunately, the coach thinks he'll get his revenge when some parents begin asking where their cleats, shoes, and shin guards are.  I'm pretty sure that if these girls want their stuff back, they'll need to come and get it themselves.

We'll eventually find out who these nine girls (yeah, I got the message on each individual knife) are.   The previous 5 are all guilty, I know they are (you too Michelle).  Newcomers had to be Sarah Jane and AP, so I really need to find only two (A-Hehl & Caitlin).  Well done, girls!

I'm sure I'll see some of you at Amy's grad party... if you can keep a straight face, I'll be impressed.

PS - A-Hehl... I know you were one of them... I have proof...

"on a sad note.. soccer is over. i cried for awhile and was sad before i got over it! i love those girls!! speaking of those girls, we went out and had some top secret fun last night... omg.. i'll put up pichas when i see some he...he...he"

You are so caught!!!  Go ahead and use the pichas, I don't mind...

Varsity Beats Godwin 4-0, JV's Win
Varsity - The Ladies came out hungry, scoring just 31 seconds into the game when Caitlin laid out a nice pass to Theresa who buried the ball in the net.  Sarah B. followed that with a goal just 4 minutes later after Lexie fed her the assist.  Lexie scored her own goal after Hannah led her with a nicely touched pass for the 3-0 lead, and Rochelle closed out the scoring in the 1st half after Jesse D slid a nice pass through Godwins defense.
With the lead, and against the wind, the Ladies relied on strong defense, and ball possession to carry them through for the 4-0 win at home.  Amanda was perfect in goal stopping 8 shots for her 5th shutout this season, and the defense and midfielders played strong throughout the entire game.
This sets up Wednesdays meeting with Calvin to decide the league championship.  With a win, the Ladies will pull even with Calvin and have Kent City left on the league schedule next Monday.  Kick-off is at 4:00 at Coops.   Bring your friends & family, we want a big crowd to help the Ladies get this done!

JV - The Jv's battled to a scoreless tie in the 1st half, with each team getting 1 shot on goal.  Ball possession was good and the team played well against a good Catholic Central team.
The 2nd half saw the Jv's score on a nice goal by Sami.  Coops had some good opportunities to score, narrowly missing a few times.  Steph played well in goal, making a game saving stop with about 15 minutes left.
The Jv's return to action Wednesday vs. Calvin at home at 5:30.

Varsity Plays Well, JV's Tie
Varsity - The team played well, and hard, and was trailing Calvin 1-0 after the 1st half.  Calvins speed and passing skills showed in the 2nd half as they put 3 in the net for the final 4-0 score.
The Ladies were determined and played aggressive, physical defense.  Janell made some outstanding plays at Center "D", as well as the midfield and other defenders strong plays.  The few times they left marks open, they scored.  One of Calvins goals was a deflection that Coops helped in.  Amanda played well in goal, earning many saves.
The team travels to Kent City next Monday to complete league play.  Kickoff is at 5:30.

Special thanks to all the fans who made it to the game.  The screams and cheers were appreciated by the team and coach.  We hope you enjoyed the game, and hope you'll return for future home games next week and for the District tournament.

JV - The Jv's played Calvin to a deadlock 0-0 game that was pretty exciting.  Both Keepers made some special saves to keep their teams in the game.  Forwards had some good looks at the goal, but couldn't convert.
The Jv's complete their season on Monday when they travel to Hamilton.  This team has done well, and should enjoy their last game of the season.

Varsity Runs Away from Rogers, JV Plays Hard
Varsity - The Ladies played Rogers to a 3-3 halftime tie, playing against the wind and allowing Rogers to get a couple through balls and a goal off a corner kick.  Scoring for Coops in the 1st half was Lexie with 2 goals, and Theresa with the other.  Assists were recorded by Theresa, Sara A. and Sarah B.
Following some adjustments to keep Rogers forward at bay, the Ladies controlled play and made many nice runs at the goal and capitalized for 6 2nd half goals, creating the 9-3 final score.  Sarah B exploded for 5 2nd half goals, breaking the school record; Hannah scored the other goal on a free kick from 35 yards out.  Assists were registered by Theresa, Jesse D, Danielle D, Lexie, and Katy C.
Coops returns to action on Monday at home vs. Godwin.

JV - The Jv's played hard once again and had their chances to score, but were unable to get the ball past Rogers keeper.
Rogers scored with 12 minutes left on a shot that just got by Sami's outstretched hands.  It was a very good effort by these girls.
They return to action on Monday vs. Catholic Central at home at 5:30.

Lady Broncos Win @ Sparta

Both Lady Bronco teams earned victories at Sparta tonight in front of many pleased fans.  The girls and coaches appreciate the support that was shown by the large number of fans and the vocal support that accompanied it.  You guys ROCKED!!!

Varsity
The Lady Broncos controlled most of the play through the entire game, keeping the ball on the Sparta side for at least 75% of playing time.
Just 5 minutes into the game, Lexie crossed a ball in front of the goal and Theresa banged it in for the 1-0 lead.  Coops outshot Sparta 10-0 in the 1st half, which included fine control of the ball and impressive defense to stop any Spartan advances.  All 21 players who were dressed for the game played on the field in the 1st half.
With only 2 minutes gone in the 2nd half, Lexie crossed another ball in front of the goal, and it was Theresa again knocking the ball into the goal, with her head!  It was an outstanding play, one of the nicest we've seen from the Lady Broncos.  Sparta scored on a ball that got past Amanda and she couldn't catch up to it before it crossed the line.  Tough defense and a gritty performance by the defense and midfielders kept the game in hand for the Lady Broncos.  Coops outshot Sparta 21-2 for the game.
The Lady Broncos play again on Wednesday at Ottawa Hills.
A map is available below, next to the game at the bottom of this page.

JV
For a first time team, on the road, these girls played very tough.  They controlled most of the action, and passed well amongst themselves.  The defense played incredibly well as they earned the shutout in the 1st game ever played by a JV Lady Broncos team.
Sami, Audra, and Kristi each scored a goal to give the JV's their 3, and Mary and Stephanie combined for the shutout in goal.  All the other girls contributed with their hard efforts, and the results showed on the score board.  It was a solid effort by a good group of girls.  This team will be fun to watch!

Bond Issue Passes!!!
Thank you to all who voted in favor of the bond proposal. This is a big victory for our school, community, and children. This vote will provide many years of benefits to the youth of our community, as well as all of the groups who will benefit from this positive message that was sent by those who voted in favor.

This also means great changes and improvements for our soccer program. The 2005 season will be the last on our current field.

Beginning in the Spring of 2006, the Lady Broncos will move into the stadium to play their home matches. This will enable us to play games at more parent friendly times, and give our program all of the benefits that come with lights, a scoreboard, and a state of the art competition field to play on.

This will also enable Coopersville to host state tournament district, regional, and quarter or semi-finals. Other options will be available to bring higher classes of soccer tournaments to Coopersville.

Thanks again to all of you who supported this bond issue. You've made an incredible statement regarding the way this community will stand behind its kids in support of their best interests.

Both Lady Broncos teams score 5 in Wins

Five was the magic number for both teams, and that number resulted in Wins for both squads.  Both teams are 2-0 heading into spring break.

Varsity
The Lady Broncos jumped out to a quick lead in the first few minutes as Rochelle passed to Sarah B. who then buried the ball into the back of the goal.  Coops played well at times but seemed out of sync.
After some halftime adjustments, the girls came out fired up and scored 4 consecutive goals in the first 20 minutes to seal the game.  Sarah added 3 second half goals to earn her 4 for the game, tying the school record that she already shares with Lexie.  Jesse D. added a goal, her 1st of the season. Assists were recorded by Jessica K., Theresa, and Sara A as well.
The Lady Broncos head into spring break with a 2-0 record and return to game action on Tuesday April 13 vs. GR Central.

JV
The JV's came out strong and scored 3 goals in the 1st half to take the lead, and control play for most of the half.  Sami played in goal, and played well.  The JV's added 2 goals in the 2nd half to secure their 2nd consecutive shutout.  Mary played solid in goal during the 2nd half.
Amber scored 3 times, while Jacquie added 2 more.  It was a good showing by the JV's who are improving each time they take the field.
They also return to action at GR Central on April 13.

Lady Broncos Open Season with a 0-0 Tie

The Lady Broncos began their 2006 season with a Home game vs. Spring Lake on Tuesday.  The Lady Broncos have never beaten Spring Lake, and that trend continued, although this time they didn't lose.

The Ladies started out on their heels a bit as Spring Lake played most of the first 15 minutes on Coops side of the field.  The team battled tough and never gave the Lakers a real good look at the goal.  The Mids began to press a little and started to create some nice ball movement and were getting the ball up the field to the forwards.  Coops had a good scoring opportunity with around 25 minutes left in the half but the ball sailed over the crossbar.  The rest of the 1st half was back and forth.

The Ladies came out in the 2nd half and played much better, making the adjustments the coaches brought to their attention at halftime.  The forwards had numerous chances as their teammates kept moving the ball upfield.  Coops had some decent scoring opportunities, but Spring Lakes defense and keeper were up for it.  The game was over with the score where it was when the game started.

Great job ladies, it was a good first game of the season.

Park Wins 4th Seed in Tournament, Beats Lady Broncos 2-0

Varsity-   Wyoming Park earned the 4th seed for the Conference tournament with the win at home.  Coops best possible finish is now 5th place after outshooting Park 26-15.  Shots found their way either wide of the goal or to the keeper which created the need for more chances to be taken.

Park scored their 2nd goal with 13 minutes left, and although Coops managed 5 more shots in the last 13 minutes, they couldn't convert any of them into goals.
The Lady Broncos will host Hamilton in non-league action on Friday.  Game times may be adjusted due to school activities at Hamilton.

JV-     The first half of the Wyoming park game was real similar to the first half of the Calvin game.  The ball control and passing wasn’t where it needed to be.  Each team had a couple of scoring chances but failed to convert.  At the end of the first half the score was 0-0.

However, the second half was a different story for the Broncos.  We regained our composure and began to rely on one another instead of trying to do it all alone.  The passing to each other became crisper and our confidence began to grow.  The ladies began to win the 50/50 balls and thus allowed them to be in the offensive end of the field.  Julie made a nice pass to Jess who shot from just inside the right corner of the 18 yard box and hit the far side of the net.  The defense was very stingy and used their most valuable weapon, the trap, to keep Park off balanced.  In fact at one point in the game Park was called offside four times in a row.
Teamwork!!!  The last goal came from Anna after Shelby and Tara were persistent around the keeper and caused her to misplay a ball.  The two of them were able to knock the ball loose and it fell in front of Anna who shot it into the empty net.  Ladies, the coaching staff is very proud of how you came out and played the second half.  That is the team we know and love.

Teams Fare Well vs. Union
Varsity -  After a long spring break, Coops came out ready to play.  The Lady Broncos came out and put a goal up in the first 7 minutes as Ashley P. let the ball go from 30 yards and saw it find the corner of the goal.
A few minutes later, Lorie B. chased down a nice thru-ball by AP and blasted it past the keeper.  Lorie connected again a short time later as her speed was too much for Unions defense.  Lisa came on the field and scored in the 1st minute after chasing down a pass from Laura.  Laura completed the first half scoring by knocking the ball in from a tight angle after receiving the ball from Jesse D.
Mary held Union scoreless on their lone shot, and the defense of Ashley H., Sarah, Erin, and Amy played very well, particularly Sarah who controlled the middle of the field.  Geena & Chelsea also played strong on the defensive end.
The 2nd half saw Lorie score minutes in for her 3rd goal of the game.  AP earned the assist with a well played ball.  Stephanie kept the shut-out valid with 2 saves, and the entire team played solidly to wrap up the victory.
Many good things happened for the Lady Broncos as they won many of the 50-50 balls and controlled play for most of the game.
Another City League foe is up on Thursday when the Ladies travel to Riverside Park to meet Creston.  Kick-off is set for 5:30.

JV -
The scoring came within the first 5 minutes into the game with Julie putting the ball into the back of the net.  Next came Anna with her shot just inside 12 yards and beat the keeper.  Anna was also involved with the 3rd goal by giving a nice pass to Tara who found the net with a shot just inside the 18 yard line.  This is both of these girls’ first high school career goals and assist.  Another first high school career goal was scored by Shelby to make the score 4 to 0.  Julie then put another shot in near the end of the first half to make the score 5 to 0 at half time.

The girls came out the second half with just as much fire as they had in the first half.  Julie again found the net to give herself a hat trick, however she was not finished because within 5 minutes of this score she made her final goal for the night.  She ended up with 4 goals and one assist.  Not to be out done, Anna found the ball in the middle of the 18 yard box and hit the corner of the net for her second goal.  Jess worked very hard and was determined to make a goal from the left side.  Her determination paid off with about 2 minutes left in the game she scored our final goal of the night.

Nikita played in goal and recorded her first shut out of the season.  She did have a lot of help from her defense though because they only allowed 1 shot on goal.  The defense was captained by Sarah at the sweeper and was helped by Tareyn, Amber, Molly, Sam, and Hannah.  The coaches were very proud of the girls play tonight.

Lady Broncos Bring It to Creston
Varsity - The Lady Broncos traveled to Riverside Park in Grand Rapids and escaped without any injuries. They also claimed a 9-0 victory over GR Creston on a field that has been unkind to teams from Coops in the past.  Lady Bronco players have been carried off that field, due to the extreme conditions it offers.
The team controlled play from the start, and rarely allowed Creston to penetrate inside the eighteen.  It took the Lady Broncos a while to get the goals started, but once they did, they came quickly.
Ashley P. started with a Penalty Kick Goal after a Coops player was taken down inside the box, then Lorie scored 3 consecutive goals in less than 10 minutes, followed by Jesse's pretty shot from the corner that was out of reach for the Creston keeper.  There were many nice plays offensively and defensively as players dealt with the terrain.  Mary controlled the net to keep Creston off the board, and the defensive group did a great job of keeping any Creston runs from becoming anything more than runs.
The 2nd half saw more of the same control by the Lady Broncos, and Lorie started the goal scoring with her 4th of the game.  Amanda score twice on nice shots from the left side, and Lisa scored her second goal in as many games to finish out the scoring for Coops.  The defense turned up the heat to prevent Creston from getting any good looks at the goal, and Stephanie played  flawlessly in goal to preserve the shutout.
All players contributed to the win, and saw plenty of time on the field.  Reserve players got in some quality playing time which will help as the season progresses.
The team travels to Rogers on Monday to play a non-league contest with the Golden Hawks.  Rogers is in our league, but due to Kent City leaving the league, Coops picked up this game to fill their schedule.  Kick-off is set for 4:00 PM.

JV -  The first thing the girls noticed was how bad the field condition was in.  They made a good adjustment to this field and didn’t allow any poor hops to make a difference in the game.  Julie continued her goal scoring by striking the ball somewhere near the 18, that’s if there was a line for the 18 yard marker, and putting it past the keeper.  She went on to score 3 more times in the game.  The next to score was Ber; this was her first career goal.  Now she gets a reward from her parents, right Chuck and Beverly.  Ber also scored a second time in the second half.  Creston, unfortunately for them, gave us a free goal when one of their defenders put the ball into their own net.  Shelby capped the first half off with a shot from the left side around the 6 yard line; she also added a score in the second half.  Angie fired a shot past the keeper to score her first goal of her career.  Angie was very excited because this is her first year of playing soccer in her life.  This gave Coopersville a score of 5-0 at the half.  The defensive core again only allowed 1 shot on goal in the first half.

The second half Coopersville scored 5 more times making the final score 10-0.  Nikita and Caitlin combined for a second shut-out in a row.  The defense ( Sarah, Molly, Tareyn, Amber, Sam, and Hannah) once again was very stingy in their half by only allowing 1 shot on goal for the entire game.  The assists for this game were Jess (2), Stephanie (1) and Angie (1).  Next up is Rogers on Monday; this game will be a very tough game.  Be ready to play girls.

Lady Broncos Open League Play with 9-0 Win

The Lady Broncos opened league play tonight against the Rebels from Lee and scored quickly, with Amanda registering the first goal off an assist from AP.

Stephanie scored in her first game played in the field less than 2 minutes later.  Amanda scored her second goal with Julie getting the assist.  Angie stepped up to score her first goal of the season, followed by goals from AP (assisted by Amanda), Amanda (hat trick) assisted by AP, Tara (assisted by Mary), Tara again, and Cassie.

The team played better but knows it must improve continuously to get to where they want to be.  No resting on games past!  Keep moving forward and learn from everything that happens.  Overall, it was a job well done to play at our level and not slow down.

Mary started in goal and was relieved by Kita.  Coops outshot Lee 27-0.

The mercy rule was applied at half-time and the game was called.  Lee's girls battled throughout and never gave up, a credit to them and their coaches.

The JV's will play at Allendale at 5:00 on Tuesday, and the Varsity and JV travel to Cedar Springs on Wednesday for another league game.  Next Saturday will be the 2nd annual Lady Bronco Invitational.

Team Night Fun
For the 2nd straight season, both teams got together with the Varsity Softball team for "Team Night".  This consisted of eating pizza & chips in the Cafeteria, then performing some "bonding".  See the pictures for some good laughs, although it was much funnier to actually see it in person.

After the fun among teams, everyone went to see the school musical "Footloose" and watched classmates and teammates perform on a different stage.  It was a great way to end try-out week.

Congratulations to all of the girls on both teams this season.  We're expecting to watch you do great things as the season progresses.

Lady Broncos Battle at Cedar Springs

The Lady Broncos traveled to Cedar Springs and played determined soccer. The defense was intense the entire game and the mids and forwards were fighting hard to gain possession. Cedars goal came from a corner kick midway through the 1st half as Steph moved forward to play the ball and saw it carry over her head. Steph played well throughout the game, with support from the rest of the team, to keep the final score at 1-0.

The team kept the intensity turned up in the second half as they tried to put one in, but could not manage to finish with a goal. The effort was outstanding on the field and bench as everyone was contributing any way they could. Improvements were made in areas of concern earlier, and the team is playing better after their 3rd game of the season.

The Invitational is on Saturday at CHS.

Lady Broncos Lose Another Player to Injury in Loss to FHE
As if things weren't already challenging enough, the Lady Broncos traveled to FHE with 4 players unable to play due to injuries and a rehearsal concert.

The team played hard and held FHE to 2 first half goals.  Mary played well in goal despite not playing in that position much this season.  Both Steph and Kita were not able to play tonight.

The 2nd half saw FHE put 3 more in for the final score.

Chelsea was taken to St. Mary's hospital after being kicked in the head during the game.  Her tests came back showing no bleeding and she was being released when I left the hospital around 11:20 PM.  She does have a concussion and will be out for at least 1-2 weeks as a result.

The Lady Broncos host Godwin on Wednesday.  Game time will be at 5 PM for Varsity.  The JV's will play West Michigan Christian at 6:45 PM.

Lady Broncos Even League Record with 4-1 Win

The Lady Broncos scored three goals in a 10 minute period in the 1st half for a 3-0 lead and took control from there.  The win puts their league record at 2-2.

Mary opened up the box score with a goal that Amanda assisted on.  Cassie took a loose ball, carried for 10 yards, and drilled a shot into the net for the 2nd goal.  Michelle (Lucy) scored her 1st goal of the season on a nice shot from 15 yards out.  Godwin got on the board after a misplayed ball was sent into the goal by their forward.  The score was 3-1 at half-time.

The 2nd half was played mostly on Godwins side as the Lady Broncos kept pressure on.  Julie broke through for her goal after receiving a nice pass from Amanda.

The defense played well and kept control of their marks, stepping up to make solid stops on any attempts.  Godwin was limited to 5 shots at goal.  Steph played well in goal to ensure no other goals were allowed.

The next opponent is TK Middleville in a non-league match on Friday.  Kick-off is scheduled for 6:45 PM.

In the JV match, the Lady Broncos hosted West Michigan Christian and allowed a goal in each half and eventually lost 2-0.  Improvements were seen in several areas as the team continues to work on strengthening their abilities.
They return to action on Friday at 5:00 PM against TK Middleville.

Lady Broncos Show Spirit Against TK Middleville

The Lady Broncos hosted TK Middleville and played very tough despite having only 13 of 20 players dressed to play.  Three JV players made their Varsity debut a solid effort and contributed greatly.  Tareyn played well in goal with help from Molly in defense, and Shelby had some nice runs and was aggressive continuously.

That play along with the outstanding effort of the Varsity members who were playing held a quick TK team in check for the first 20 minutes of the game.  The pressure was high at two points in the last 20 minutes of the half and that's when TK scored their goals.  The team allowed a goal late in the game for the 3-0 final.

In what has become an all too familiar sight this season, the Lady Broncos watched as an injured player left the field again.  The difference is that this time it's season ending.  Trina will be out for the remainder of the season after suffering a broken leg which resulted from contact with a player from TK.  This event is a terrible loss for the team as Trina was playing well.  We wish Trina the best comfort possible as she heals from this injury.

The JV's had 3 goals scored against them in the first 8 minutes, then shut down all attempts to score again and were down 3-0 at halftime.  They were playing without 5 of their players tonight.
The team allowed another goal in the 2nd half for the 4-0 final.  It was a great team effort.

Lady Broncos Improve Play in 7-1 Win, JV's Win 7-0

The Lady Broncos began play on Monday at Rogers and concluded it on Tuesday with a 7-1 win vs. the Golden Hawks.
The team made nice runs and passes to create chances, then finished them as they completed their 2nd day at Rogers.

The score was 3-0 heading into play on Tuesday with 16:38 left in the first half.  Rogers came out aggressively to hold the score at 3-0 at halftime.  Rogers scored the first goal of the 2nd half to close the game to 3-1, but the Lady Broncos scored the next 4 goals for the final score.

Goals were scored by Mary, Julie, AP, and Tara; Cassie had 3 goals in the game.  Assists were recorded by Amanda, Mary, Julie, Amber, and AP had 2 assists.  Stephanie played well in goal, surrounded by a tough defense that limited Rogers attempts to score.

JV - The JV girls came out with high intensity at the start of the game and was able to capitalize with a goal from Shelby with her first shot, Sarah had the assist.  Anna was the next one to find the back of the net to make the score 2-0.

Play continued to go back and forth then the combination of Sarah to Shelby was able to produce another goal.  Shelby then had another break away and was able to score thus giving her a hat trick.  We went into half time with the score 4-0.

The girls were very excited and anxious to get the second half going.  Meredith scored in the second half for her first high school career goal.  Hannah DeKracker then scored our 6th goal after Emily crossed the ball from the left side.  This was Emily's first time playing as forward and she made the most of her time by not only having an assist but also scoring our last goal for the night.

Tareyn played the first half in goal and allowed nothing in the net.  Her performances continue to get stronger with each game.  She also played in the field in the second half and played very strong.  Amber played in the second half and she also brought the same intensity that she finished with from Middleville game.  She faced a couple of shots that were very tough but she denied Roger's of the scoring chances,  Giving us another shut out for the season.

The keepers also got help from a strong defense that only allowed them to get 2 shots at the goal.  Great Job Defense(Molly, Emily, Leigha, Amber, Karma, Hannah D)  Our mid-fielders played extremely well and made use of the space that was given to us.  They controlled the ball 90% of the game and that is what makes a team successful.  We now have our second win and heading to Calvin with some momentum.

rearCLR.gif

JV's Score on Calvin
The girls were ready to play.  They had continued their winning attitude from the night before.  Play started out where we made some runs into our offensive end and Calvin would return the run back to our defensive end.

The girls were working hard and keeping stride for stride with the girls from Calvin.  The ball started bouncing around near the goal and Calvin's defense was getting a little frantic.  Then it happened, the ball bounced off of a few people and found its way onto Stephanie Carmody's foot, she gave it a smack and low and behold it was in the back of the net.  She scored the first goal in JV history against Calvin.  This gave us the lead for the first time in JV history as well, it was 1-0.

Calvin then proceeded to turn up the pressure on our defense.  We continued to work very hard but unfortuately Calvin was able to cross the ball over and found one of their players in the middle to knock it in to tie the score.  But we did have the lead and held it for around 7 minutes.  The girls didn't let that goal deter their efforts for the rest of the half.  They stood their ground and we went into half time tied 1-1.

The second half was another battle back and forth however, Calvin was able to find the net 3 more times successfully giving us a final score of 4-1.  I was very proud though of how they played today and this group will be able to say that they were the first to score on Calvin and have a lead.  They worked extremely hard and never gave up and that is all you can ask from your players as a coach.  We will take the good out of this game and apply it to next week's home game against Wyoming Park.  Good work ladies and keep your heads held high!

Lady Broncos Lose in 2nd OT to Park

The team played tough, physical soccer and battled a tough team from Wyoming Park to a 0-0 halftime score.  Both teams had several chances but couldn't put one past either keeper.
Park scored their goal on a loose ball that was kicked toward the goal, and ruled as "crossing the line".
Coops goal was a result of a free kick that was called after Amanda was kicked in the head after getting knocked down in the box.  Cassie banged the shot past all of Parks players as they stood on the goal line.  The score was 1-1 at the end of regulation.
Both teams managed few shots in OT as the defenses maintained their positions.  Park scored the game winner with 3 minutes left in the game on a loose ball that bounced around in front of the goal before being knocked in.
The final shots at goal was Park with 10 and the Lady Broncos with 8.  Stephanie played well in goal, with support from the players in front of her.
The loss sends the Lady Broncos record to 3-4 in league play, with Sparta and Belding left on the regular season schedule.  The Conference tournament will follow, with opponents being determined by their position in the league standings.

JV's Beat Park 1-0

The JV girls won a hard fought battle against the Wyoming Park Vikings.  The first half of play seem to get bogged down in the middle of the field.  Each team did get a couple of scoring chances but the keepers were up to the task and stopped anything from going in.  We ended at half time in a scoreless tie.

The second half was very similar to the first half, play continued to move from the 18 yard marker to the 18 yard marker.  Our defensive group played extremely tough and only allowed 6 scoring chances to Vikings.  However their defense was just a stingy.  Then the Vikings were called for a foul outside of the box.  Tareyn took the kick from her defender position and placed a ball into the middle of the field.  Shelby was the first one to the loose ball and was able to pass it back to Meridith at which she turned and fired a shot past WP's keeper.
This would be the only score for the Broncos but it was enough thanks to a wonderful play by Amber.  We werre called for a questionable foul inside the box.  This set the stage for WP to have a penalty kick.  Amber stared into the kickers eyes and was able to stop the ball from going into the net and preserving the shut out and the win for the Broncos.  The final score was 1-0.  I was very proud of the effort that the girls gave in the game.  The thing that impresses me the most about this team is that they don't give up.  No matter how much I push them, and believe me I push them very hard at times, they will not give up.  It is this attitude that allowed us to win today.

Spartans Defeat Lady Broncos 3-2

Sparta came to Coopersville and battled with the Lady Broncos. They also registered three goals in an eight-minute stretch during the 1st half to score all the goals they would need to secure a win.

The three goals came after Amanda slammed a shot into the net after receiving a nice feed from AP to set the score at 1-0. That goal put the Lady Broncos in front, but it wouldn't last long.

Less than 4 minutes later came the scoring flurry by Sparta on shots that were placed where Steph couldn't get to them. The score was 3-1 at the half.

The team came out and scored a goal in the first minute of the 2nd half closing the gap to a goal. Julie sent a corner kick into the middle and Amanda knocked it home for the goal.  That would be the end of the scoring for the game as the teams played back and forth, up and down the field.

The next game will be played on Saturday in Jenison. The JV's begin at 10 AM followed by the Varsity.

rearCLR.gif

JV's Tie Sparta 1-1
Sparta came into town with a record of 4-5.  Their coach had informed me that his team was hungry for a win today.  What he didn't know was the we were also hungry for another win.  We had the momentum of winning on Monday and wanting to continue a winning streak.
The first half started out pretty strong for both teams.  Each getting good scoring chances but neither keeper was letting the ball in the net.  Sparta got a lucky bounce which gave them a break away and just put it past the outstretched arms of Tareyn on her left side.  We went into halftime with a score of 1-0, Sparta.

The second half started and the two teams were very stingy defensively.  Play continued to go back and forth on the field.  The weather was very warm and the girls were feeling the heat.  Sparta was performing the mass subbing where they would bring in a whole new team.  We continued to sub strategically trying to catch Sparta in a mismatch.  We then were able to receive a corner kick.  Tareyn took the kick and gave us a beautiful cross into the middle of the net.  The ball proceeded to bounce around and then popped just outside of the 18 yard box on the left side.  Sarah happened to be in the right place and struck the ball back in towards the goal.  She hit the right side net of the goal to tie up the score.

Sparta had a few good scoring chances but once again Amber had put on her game face and was not going to allow anything past her.  She made some terrific stops at point blank shots by the Sparta forwards but each time she denied them the thrill of the score.  The game ended in a 1-1 tie.  All of the girls worked very hard today and left everything on the field.
We now get ready for Jenison on Saturday.  We have seen them play before because they were our tournament champion's.

Lady Broncos Hold Jenison Scoreless in 1st Half

The team played inspired defense, moving with the opponents every step of the way and limiting the Wildcats scoring chances. Steph played well in goal stopping everything Jenison threw at her. It was especially refreshing to see the ladies perform in positions that aren't their normal places. The defense held their marks and the support from the mids was exceptional. The team followed the game plan wonderfully and the 0-0 score reflected that.

The 2nd half started the same way with the ladies stopping any attempt, but eventually the pressure was too much and a couple goals were relenquished. Jenison added a late goal on a ball that stayed in front of the goal for what seemed like an eternity.

This was a great team effort coming into a game in which they were clearly the underdog, but stepped up to prove they can play with any team when they are determined and work hard.

The regular league season concludes on Monday at Coops when Belding comes to town. JV's start at 5:00 followed by the varsity.

Lady Broncos Control Play, Calvin Up Next in Tourney

The team welcomed Belding in for the final regular league game of the season and scored 8 goals for the win.  This brings the league record to 4-5 and places the team in 6th place after the regular league round.  We'll play on Wednesday at Calvin Christian in the first round of the league tourney.  Varsity will play at 4 PM, followed by the JV's.

Belding played hard and never gave up, a credit to them and their coaches.  They will improve, and are a nice bunch of kids.

Goals were scored by Sarah V. on a corner kick, Lucy on a blast from another area code, Sarah VK (THE Sweeper), Cassie - twice, and Mary (where's your hat?) - thrice.  Assists were registered by Sarah V, Jess L, and two from Jules.

The team now prepares for the league tourney, and will try to finish strong.

JV- The team was down 1-0 at half-time, but rallied with 3 goals in the 2nd half for the 3-1 win.

Calvin Sends Lady Broncos to Consolation Bracket

The strong wind and speed of Calvin were too much to handle in the 1st half as the Lady Broncos fell behind by allowing 5 goals.  Steph played strong in goal and made some nice saves with help from the support in front of her.

The team played a strong 2nd half by moving the ball, and working together to hold Calvin's chances and them to one goal.  The defense held strong and the mids and forwards had some nice runs through the defense.

The loss means the Lady Broncos will be at home on Monday to continue the league tournament against Godwin.  We are trying to find an opponent for the JV team since Godwin doesn't field a JV team.  We'll post information as soon as it has been determined.

JV's - The JV's scored a goal in the 1st half, and held Calvin to a goal in the 2nd half for a 1-1 tie.  The girls played extremely hard and well; each player contributed in the effort.

Lady Broncos Earn 1-0 Victory

The team traveled to Hamilton and played one of its better defensive games in a 1-0 shutout of the Hawkeyes.  The defensive strategy paid off as Hamilton couldn't crack the aggressive Lady Broncos defenders.

Both teams had opportunities to score in the first half, but it was the Lady Broncos putting in the only goal that would be scored with over 10 minutes remaining in the 1st half.

Mary gained possession around midfield, carried for about 10 yards, and crossed a thru ball to Amanda who rushed to the ball and beat the keeper from Hamilton.  The shot was a slow rolling ball that got into the goal before a Hamilton defender could stop it.

Stephanie kept Hamilton off the board with a spectacular save with under 2 minutes to play in the 1st half.  As a Hamilton player closed in on the right side of the goal, she shot into the left post area but Steph dove and swatted the ball wide just before it crossed the goal line.  The save energized the team, and was one of the best saves we've ever witnessed by a Lady Bronco keeper.

The 2nd half showed why playing tough competition makes you stronger.  The Lady Broncos remained calm as Hamilton tried to mount pressure and tie the game.  The team kept stopping each run at the goal, and limited the quality of opportunities for Hamilton to score.  Hamilton finished the game with 10 shots on goal; the Lady Broncos had 7 shots.

Coops returns to action in the 2nd round of the league tourney on Monday when they face Godwin.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4 PM at Coopersville.  The JV's will play Allendale following the Varsity game.

Godwin Makes Lady Broncos Work for a 3-2 Win

The Lady Broncos scored 68 seconds into the game, but Godwin played hard and forced the Lady Broncos to play hard the entire game.  Cassie scored the Lady Broncos first goal on determination as she stayed with the ball on the goal line and struck a hard shot into the side of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Godwin tied the game on a long shot that floated over Steph's outstretched arms.  The score was 1-1 at the half.

Cassie scored her second goal of the game by continuing to dig out shots.  Her pursuit of a loose ball in front of the Godwin goal paid off when she scored at 25:28 in the 2nd half.

Godwin would tie the game on a missed mark less than 9 minutes later, but AP knocked a 20 yard shot off a Godwin defender for the final goal with less than 11 minutes left in the game.

The team worked very hard for the win, and Godwin was much improved from the last time we saw them.  The win gives the team three wins in their last four games.

JV's - The JV's played Allendale to a 1-1 tie in a closely contested match.

The final regular season game will be played on Tuesday May 22 at Sparta.  The JV's play at 5 PM, followed by the Varsity at 6:45 PM.

The team bus will depart at 3:45 from CHS.

Lady Broncos Beat Sparta in OT

The team played its 2nd game in 2 days and earned a tough 2-1 win in OT at Sparta.  The game was played in warm temperatures with a reduced number of players due to a school function.

Sparta scored first after 10 minutes of play on a play that the team defended well, but Sparta's player made a nice play and sneaked the ball past Steph.  That would be their last goal of the game.  Coops went up and down the field with Sparta for the rest of the half and entered the break trailing 1-0.

The Lady Broncos controlled play to start the 2nd half and had some nice runs and crossed which created opportunities but no goals.  That changed when Amanda sent a ball across the field just 10 minutes into the 2nd half, and Cassie slammed the ball in for the tying goal.

The rest of regulation play continued back and forth with a few more decent opportunities for the Lady Broncos, and the defense playing well to control the ball.  Erin, Sarah V, Sarah VK, Geena, Shelby, and Emily played strong in defense stopping all advances by the Spartans.

The teams began OT with both teams playing cautiously on the defensive side.  The Lady Broncos increased the pressure offensively, and Shelby was moved into midfield to help create some more chances.  Shelby responded by finding a pass from Cassie and placing it into the far side of the goal for the game winner with 4:14 left in OT.  Her play was a tribute to how hard the mids had worked all game.  Jess, Mary, Julie, Lucy, and AP performed well throughout the game.

Congratulations on a strong finish to the regular season...

JV's- The JV's played hard and concluded their season with a 1-0 loss.

Lady Broncos Host District

Coopersville played host to Spring Lake in District play on Tuesday and kept the winner in question until 6 minutes were left before Spring Lake scored the final goal that cemented the lead.  Spring Lake entered the game with a 12-3-1 record, and the Lady Broncos entered with a record of 7-11.

The teams met to open the season in March at Spring Lake with the Lakers beating the Lady Broncos 6-0.  This game would have a different feel altogether.

Spring Lake scored twice in the opening half and carried much of the play.  Steph played great in goal registering 13 saves in the 1st half alone, and 16 for the game.  The defense and mids worked hard to limit Spring Lakes advances.

The 2nd half saw the Lady Broncos step up and out play their opponents.  Julie scored with 17 minutes to play to bring the Lady Broncos within one goal.  The effort that each player gave on the field today is indicative of the spirit of these girls.  They refused to quit, and played to win.

It wasn't until the mark was removed from the Lakers leading scorer with 10 minutes left that she was allowed to score.  Mary did wonderfully to shut down a player that not many teams have shut down.

The other game at Coops on Tuesday featured GR Catholic Central vs. Muskegon Oakridge, and it was Oakridge scoring a 5-0 win.

The Semi-finals were played on Thursday at Coopersville with West Catholic beating Muskegon Orchard View 7-0, and Oakridge beating Spring Lake 3-1.

The Finals on Saturday featured West Catholic vs. Oakridge, with Oakridge winning 3-0.

Lady Broncos Drop Opener, 5-2

The Lady Broncos battled Spring Lake, but defensive breakdowns in various locations of the field gave way to the Lakers scoring 4 first half goals in the season opener for both teams.  The Lady Broncos scored their lone goal in the first half on a nice cross from the right corner by Kailey that was buried into the goal by Melissa.

The teams played the second half to a 1-1 draw as the Lady Broncos picked up play on the defensive end, limiting the Lakers to four 2nd half shots.  Kailey and Melissa combined again for the Lady Broncos 2nd half goal on a cross and slam into the net.

Not the result that the girls were looking for, but they battled hard and watching the game film will reveal areas for improvement.  There were also some bright spots that were evident during the game, and the girls will see those as well.

The team will be back in action on Saturday for the Invitational at 9:00 vs Kenowa Hills.

Lady Broncos Keep Improving; Win 6-0

The Varsity keeps steadily improving with each game.  The effort vs. Allendale was outstanding, and each team member can take pride in helping the team achieve its 2nd shut-out of the young season and best group effort yet.

Tareyn had 2 saves in goal, and the defense did a great job of limiting any Allendale threats.  Allendale's best scoring chance came as time expired in the game, but strong pressure forced the shot to go high and wide.  Sarah, Julie, Shelby, Jessica, Molly, and Maya contributed on defense in keeping the ball away from the goal.

The Lady Broncos outshot Allendale 22-2.  The mids did a great job of winning 50/50 balls and distributing them well to teammates who put themselves in position to score.

Goals were scored by Kailey (2) - the first a very nice header, Melissa (2), Anna, and Marie.  Assists were made by Melissa (3) - ties the school record for assists in a game.

Great effort by everyone, keep up the hard work and intensity.

JV - beat Allendale by a score of 4-0 to even their record at 2-2.  Great job girls!

Lady Broncos Run Past GR Central

The Lady Broncos ran past Central, posting a 8-0 victory.  Fast breaks, break-aways, and follow-ups created most of the opportunities.  Hard work, determination, and well placed shots created the goals.

Goals were scored by Anna, Marie, Kailey, Julie, Cassie (2), and Melissa (2).  Assists were earned by Melissa, Cassie, Kailey, and Marie broke the school record for assists in a game with 4 assists.

In goal, Kita had 2 saves in the first half and Tareyn played the 9 minutes in the second half before the game was called after the 8th goal.

The team travels to West Catholic on Thursday for a rematch of the Invitational Championship game.  It shouldn't take much to get the girls fired up for this one.

Great job to the entire team on taking care of business and getting it done.

JV - Coopersville scored six times to beat the Rams of GR Central, 6-0.  Nicole played for the first time as goal keeper and recorded her first shut out.  Due to great defensive pressure she only had to face 1 shot.

Contributing to the six goals was Emily with 3 goals (hat trick), Laura with 1, and scoring their first goals of the season were Aubreanne and Hannah. Assisting with the six goals was Grace with 2, Alicia and Meredith each had 1.

We now get ready to play a good West Catholic team on Thursday.

Lady Broncos Finish Strong at West Catholic

After battling for 61 minutes, the Lady Broncos surrendered the first goal of the game on a breakaway that made its way past Kita.  Two penalty kicks in the 71st minute put West up 3-0 with just over 9 minutes remaining.

The Lady Broncos scored twice in the next six minutes to bring the score to 3-2.  The team tried for the equalizer but West wouldn't allow that.  Kailey had the first goal that got things going.  Anna had the assist on a nice feed.  Kailey added her second goal on an assist from Cassie.

Impressive ending to a well played game.  Circumstances got a little weird at the end, but the girls never quit and fought their way back to have a chance at the end.  West is a solid team, and the girls can be proud of their effort; West was just a little better tonight.

Tareyn played the 1st half in goal, Kailey finished the remaining time in the net.  This is the teams 4th shutout in 7 games, and leads into the opening of league play on Monday against Wyoming Park.

The Lady Broncos are at Home on Monday at 6:45 PM.

JV - The JV's played strong and scored 10 times vs. Lee for their 4th win of the season.

Community Service Completed on Saturday 4/26/08

As their fundraiser this season, the Lady Bronco players and coach's performed community service on Saturday April 26 in the Coopersville area from 8 AM - 1 PM.

Work was done at the school and in Downtown Coopersville.  Jobs included cleaning the stadium, weeding the mulch beds around the entrance to the high school. Work downtown included weeding the mulch beds and cleaning up trash, as well as raking out left over materials from the winter.

We have begun receiving both pledges and flat donations.  We sincerely appreciate the generous support we have been given.   To date we have received close to $2500 in donations.

Donations have already begun to be put to use.  The Athletic Department purchased head protection for the Varsity this spring, and your donations have purchased the same head protection for the JV.  Every one of our players now has head protection which they wear during practice and games.  New practice balls, bags, and practice vests have also been purchased.  More items will be coming soon.

Sincere thanks to all who are helping us achieve this endeavor!

Thanks again for your incredible support!

Wyoming Park Slams Lady Broncos, 3-0

A very physical game turned on the Lady Broncos as they were beaten by Wyoming Park 3-0 and suffered a loss in their league opener.  Tareyn played well in goal but 3 missed marks resulted in the 3 goals.  The Lady Broncos had several nice attempts but were unable to get one in the net.

It was a tough game, but the girls learned some valuable lessons... ones that will benefit them later this season.  They are eager to move on and continue building.  The Lady Broncos are now 4-4 on the season.

The team will travel to Rogers on Wednesday and will try to even their league record.

JV - The JV's pounded Wyoming Park 4-1, and it wasn't even that close.  The girls dominated play and kept possession for the majority of the game.  The win moves them to 5-3 on the season.

Wednesday, April 23
5th Win, 5th Shutout

The Lady Broncos recorded their 5th shutout of the season today by beating Rogers 5-0.  The team outshot Rogers 27-3, improving their overall record to 5-4.  They are 1-1 in the league.

Play was often in the Rogers defensive side of the field as the team kept pressure on throughout the game.  Kailey scored 3 goals and Melissa had 2 as the team ran often past Rogers.  Anna recorded the lone assist on the day.

The defense and mids did a nice job in front of Tareyn, who earned the shutout in goal.  Everyone contributed in this effort, and it was nice to see the girls play their normal style of soccer again.

The team travels to Cedar Springs on Monday for a league matchup.  Kick-off is scheduled for 6:46 PM.

JV - The team improved their record to 6-3 with a 5-0 victory at Rogers.  This team is playing well, but faces a tough task at Cedar Springs on Monday.

Lady Broncos Handle Improved Allendale Team

The Lady Broncos welcomed Allendale for a rematch and won, but not without noticing the improvement by the Falcons.

Goals were scored by Melissa (2), and Kailey (2) for the 4-1 half-time lead.  Kailey, Cassie, and Elise had the assists.

Allendale scored first in the 2nd half to close the gap to 4-2, but the Lady Broncos responded with goals by Cassie and Julie to seal the victory.  Melanie and Melissa had the assists.

The win was nice, and the teams effort was H & P (Thanks Coach Mindy)... but the best highlight of the game came with just under 6 minutes remaining when Sarah VK entered the game.  It's been a long battle for Sarah, and she's not fully recovered yet, but seeing her enter the field tonight was one of the best moments our program has ever experienced.  Well done, Sarah!

The team travels to Forest Hills Eastern on Monday to continue league play.  Kick-off is set for 6:45 PM.

JV's - The JV's battled Ravenna, but suffered a 4-1 loss.  They travel to FHE on Monday for a 5 PM start.

Cedar Springs Beats Lady Broncos 4-1

The Lady Broncos ran into a skilled team from Cedar Springs and struggled to gain and maintain possession.  Passing was difficult, although they did string some nice runs together and create a few chances.

Cedar outshot the Lady Broncos 16-3, scoring twice in each half for their 4 goals.  Kailey scored the lone goal for the Lady Broncos after receiving an assist from Melanie.

The Lady Broncos league record is now at 1-2, their overall record is at 5-5.

Sparta is next on the schedule in another league match-up on Wednesday.  Both games are at Sparta with the JV's playing at 5 PM followed by the Varsity.

JV - The JV's battled for 70 minutes, but neither team could score and the teams finished deadlocked at 0-0.

Strong 2nd Half Propels Lady Broncos

After a sluggish 1st half, the Lady Broncos played a much better 2nd half and scored 3 times on their way to a 4-1 road victory at Sparta.  The score was tied at 1-1 after a 1st half which saw the team dominate play and possession but not finish.  Anna scored the lone goal in the half with an assist from Cassie.

The team took the half-time talk to heart, made the necessary adjustments, and created solid scoring opportunities and then finished them with goals.  Goals were registered by Marie, Cassie, and Melissa.  Assists were earned by Melissa, Marie, and Kailey.

The defense did a great job of limiting Sparta's runs at the goal, holding them to 3 shots in the game.  Coopersville held a 26-3 shot advantage for the game.  The win evens the league record at 2-2 and improves the overall record to 6-5.

Allendale comes to town on Friday, ending the teams 3 game road trip.  Kick-off is set for 6:45 in the Stadium.

JV's - after a scoreless 1st half, Sparta scored once in the 2nd half and kept the JV's off the board for a 1-0 win.  The JV's record now stands at 6-4-1.

Jr. High Undefeated... and Smart

The Jr. High Lady Broncos have completed their season and have a 6-0-4 record.  The are the first team in Jr. High history to complete an undefeated season in soccer.

These girls are also getting it done in the classroom.  All of the 8th graders who play on the team are on the Principal's List at the Jr. High.  This is very impressive, and equally important.  They are ready to step into the high school next year and continue our recent success of being All-State All-Academic.

  Great Job Girls!!!  Great Season!

Lady Broncos Battle at FHE

A goal scored against you in the first 32 seconds of the game could be a huge let down, but the girls fought through it.  Fighting hard for the next 20 minutes and seeing another one go in could have been back-breaking, but the girls fought through it.  Having another one scored less than 10 minutes later for a 3-0 margin could have been another let down, but the girls fought through it.  Scoring a goal with 2:59 left in the half to cut the lead to 3-1 was critical to keeping the game close.  When Melissa passed the ball to Cassie and she scored, it was very uplifting and carried over to the 2nd half.

The 2nd half saw the teams play to a 0-0 tie, and gave the Lady Broncos some momentum heading into the 2nd half of league play.

FHE is very skilled.  They controlled possession for much of the time.  The heart of the Lady Broncos came shining through as they kept working hard, and created some quality chances.

The team returns to play on Wednesday at Wyoming Park.  Kick-off is at 6:45 PM.

JV's - Played hard but was unable to slow down the talented FHE JV's resulting in the loss.  They return to action on Wednesday at Wyoming Park at 5:00 PM.

Lady Broncos Fight Until the End

Playing at Wyoming Park, the team found themselves down 1-0 at the half.  A penalty called in the box resulted in a PK, and that was the difference in the half.  The teams played hard, and even.  Park had a 9-6 shot advantage for the 1st half.

Park scored the next 2 goals in the first 20 minutes of the 2nd half, and the game appeared to be decided.  Those who know the heart and character of this team know different.

Kailey rolled past the defense, and lofted a high shot to the far post which ratttled the back of the net with 6:39 remaining.  With 4:05 left, Melissa found Anna and she moved in with a nicely placed shot to the opposite side of the goal and suddenly the score was 3-2.

The team managed a few more nice runs, but were unable to mount a serious scoring threat.  The Lady Broncos outshot Park 16-13 for the game.

It was a valiant effort by the team, again.  There is absolutely no quit in this team, and it was impressive to watch them battle until the end.

They return to the field on Saturday at 11:45 AM against Forest Hills Northern.

JV's - Beat Park by a score of 4-1 to get back in the win column.  They play FHN at 10:00 AM on Saturday.

rearCLR.gif

Saturday, May 10
Two Minutes Makes a Difference

Forest Hills Northern came out and scored 2 goals in the first 67 seconds of the game.  They also scored a goal with 35 seconds left in the game.  Those 3 goals, added to the other pair they scored gave them 5 to the Lady Broncos 1 for the final score.

Although FHN possessed the ball more, the team did well to defend against them and come back from the early 2 goals to score on a PK after Kailey was taken down on a break-away.  The FHN player was fortunate to only get the yellow instead of the red.  Melissa buried the shot top shelf to bring the score to 2-1 and get the Lady Broncos fired up.  FHN scored again with 3 minutes left to move to 3-1 at half-time.

The teams went back and forth for much of the 2nd half, and the team did well to stop all of FHN's advances.  A misplayed ball by the Lady Broncos was kicked into their own goal for FHN's 4th, and FHN scored with 35 seconds left.

The team played hard again, but those 2 minutes came back to haunt them.  The lesson has been taught; it remains to be seen if the team has learned the lesson.

Cassie has been to the doctor and her ankle is not broken.  She'll see her family doctor on Monday for a follow-up.  We won't know her playing status until Monday.

Rogers comes in on Monday as the Lady Broncos continue the 2nd round of league play.  The team needs to be ready to step up and play hard as we complete the last 2 weeks of the regular season.

Lady Broncos Post 6th Shutout

The Lady Broncos returned to league action and beat Rogers 6-0 posting their 6th shutout of the season.  The win moves their league record to 3-4, and their overall record to 8-8.

Kita handled the keeper duties, stopping 2 shots by Rogers.  The defense did well to keep the ball away from the goal for most of the game.

Goals were scored by Jessica, Marie, Kailey (2), and Melissa (2).  Assists were recorded by Marie (2), Melissa, and Kailey.  Many players had opportunities to score and play in different positions.  It was a total team effort.

The team returns to action on Wednesday at 5:00 PM, hosting league leader Cedar Springs.  The game time was moved up to accomodate the Senior Athletic Banquet which is at 6:30 PM.  JV's will play at 6:45 PM.

JV's - Beat Rogers 4-0, and controlled play for much of the game.

Lady Broncos Take Cedar Springs to the Limit

In what many presumed would be a lopsided affair, the Lady Broncos came out and scored the first goal just over 10 minutes into the contest.  Melissa found Laura who found Kailey for the nice goal.

Cedar would even things up 12 minutes later with a goal.  The tie was broken with 4:27 left in the half with the same combination as their first goal.  Melissa worked the ball to Laura, Laura sent it to Kailey, Kailey beat Cedar's keeper and rolled the ball into the goal for the 2-1 halftime lead.

Cedar came out in the 2nd half and had more scoring opportunities, but the mids and defense did well to keep the ball out of the net until with 12 minutes remaining when Cedar scored the tying goal.

The first overtime was scoreless, although Cedar has a few nice attempts with the wind at their back.  The 2nd overtime saw more back and forth action, and Cedar finally scored the game winner with 8:19 remaining.

It was a tremendous effort by the team.  They came very close to pulling off a huge victory against a talented team.  Keep working hard and giving 100% and good things will find you.

The Lady Broncos host Sparta on Monday at 6:45 PM.

JV's - The team continues to play hard.  They fell to Cedar Springs 3-0, and will host Sparta on Monday at 5:00 PM.

Lady Broncos Even Record

The record stands at 9-9 following a 3-0 win vs. Sparta.  The Lady Broncos outshot the Spartans 23-5 and led 1-0 at the half after Melissa scored with 15:41 left.  Kailey had the assist on a nice pass from the center of the field.

The 2nd half saw the Lady Broncos score twice.  Kailey had a nice goal after receiving a pass from Laura, and Melissa scored her 2nd goal after Jessica headed the ball to her.  Kita had the shutout in goal, stopping a PK with less than 3 minutes left in the game.

The defense and mids did well also, controlling play and limiting Sparta's advances.  The team returns to action on Wednesday at 5 PM vs. FHE.

JV's - The JV's scored first in the first 5 minutes of the game, but allowed a goal in the final seconds of each half to fall 2-1 to Sparta.  They conclude their season on Wednesday at 6:45 vs. FHE.

Lady Broncos Lose Again in Double-OT

For the second consecutive Wednesday, the team took a hard line and played extremely tough against a talented team.  This time it was Forest Hills Eastern, and the Lady Broncos held the lead for most of the game.

FHE scored with 18 minutes remaining to send the game into overtime.  The Lady Broncos began the scoring just 13 minutes into the game on a free kick by Melissa that was knocked into the goal by Cassie.

The teams played a scoreless OT and with 2 minutes left in the 2nd OT FHE scored on a shot that deflected off a defender and past Tareyn.

Tareyn and the defense played outstanding defense, as did the entire team.  FHE outshot Coops 19-8, but the Lady Broncos kept up the intensity and again played very well.

Keep working hard, Ladies.  District play begins Tuesday at home vs. Muskegon Reeths-Puffer.  Kick-off is at 6 PM at Coopersville.

Season Ends with 1-0 OT Loss

The Lady Broncos hosted the opening round of the 2008 MHSAA District vs.the Rockets from Muskegon Reeths-Puffer.  The game was decided in OT with the Lady Broncos coming up short by a score of 1-0.

Opportunities were earned, but the team couldn't convert them to goals.  The team handled themselves with class throughout a very physical game.

The ending of the season brings reflection, and this years team will be remembered for their heart, refusal to quit, and marked improvement from the beginning of the season.

We must say farewell to our Seniors - Cassie, Jessica, Julie, Kita, and Sarah.  They have each contributed many things to our program in the last 4 seasons.

We also say good-bye to our Exchange Students; Elise - Norway, Franzi - Germany, and Maya - Germany.  They've all brought something special to our team this season.  We will miss them very much!

Thanks to our parents and fans for your support; you have been great!

Sarah Receives the Doug Corradini Spirit Award

Sarah VanderKlay received the Doug Corradini Spirit Award last week.  This award is given to a senior athlete who portrays the same qualities of Doug Corradini.

Doug was a popular athlete at CHS in the early 80's who was diagnosed with an illness during his Junior year, and passed away during his Senior year.  Doug was a talented athlete who was very spirited in everything he did.  Whether on the field or in the classroom, he excelled.  He was a mentor to younger players and was generally liked by everyone, parents and peers alike.

This award is voted on by the Varsity coaches at CHS each year, and Sarah was deemed to be the recipient this year.

Because so many have asked to see the award presentation, you can view the speech given by Coach Harig and the presentation to Sarah by clicking on the link below.

Well done Sarah!  Your teammates and the Coaching staff are all very proud of you!
