Monday, May 19 Commack SC United Region 1 Premier League U-16 Division CHAMPIONS The Commack SC United boy's soccer team staked claim to the title of Region 1 Premier League U-16 Division Champions with another come from behind victory. After traveling to Lancaster Ma. Citizens Bank Fields, Commack battled the FC Blazers in their final league game and once again came out on top of a 1 goal decision 3-2. In fact, SC United didn't suffer a single lose all season compiling a 6 win, 0 lose and 1 tie season. The team showed some character and toughness throughout the season with no less than 4 come from behind victories. Wins came against formidable competition such as; 4-2 over Bayside Aston Villa, 3-1 over Massapequa Roughriders, 4-3 over Western United, 1-0 over Toms River Galaxy and 3-2 over Westchester Flames along with a 1-1 tie against New Hampshire Classics. This division championship will place Commack in the Region 1 League Playoff Championships on May 8 & 9 in Kirkwood, Delaware. This will also qualify SC United for another automatic bid into next year's Region 1 Premier League. Congratulations to the team on a great league season. Friday, January 1 Commack SC United Claims 2009 Disney Showcase Title!!! Commack SC United traveled south to a chilly Orlando, Florida to participate in the highly regarded Disney Soccer Showcase from December 27th to the 30th. This showcase tournament has traditionally attracted the best youth travel teams from all over the United States. This year was no different with SC United placed in a grouping that consisted of teams from Virginia, Maryland and Ohio. Commack put togteher a great effort through its first 3 grouping games with 2 wins and a tie while not allowing a goal: RFC (Va.) 0-0, Bethesda Gunners (Md.) 3-0 & Ohio FC Green Titans 5-0. This tremendous effort moved United into the Championship game against another undefeated team, Chicago Fire (Il.) Commack continued its strong defensive effort by shuting out Chicago and winning the Championship with a well played 2-0 victory. Worth noting is the fact that SC United was the only team in all of the U-16, U-17 & U-18 divisions to go through the complete tournament without giving up a goal. A tremendous accomplishment. The team would like to thank all the friends and families that came out to cheer on the team. We appreciated your efforts and hope that you were as well rewarded as we were. Thank you and we'll see you all next year! Tuesday, June 3 COMMACK SC UNITED: 2008 EASTERN NEW YORK STATE CHAMPIONS!!!!! A State Cup Championship had eluded the Commack SC United team since they began Cup play 5 years ago. A semi-final appearance in 2006 was met with a 1-0 defeat by eventual State Champion FC Somers. Last year's quarter-final appearance met with the same fate as United cam away on the short end of a 2-1 match with yet again, the eventual State Champions, FC Somers. This year Commack battle its way through a difficult draw with victories against the Bayside Flames (LIJSL D1), Bayside Aston Villa (Region 1, 2007 NY State Finalists), Lake Grove Vipers (Northeast Regional), New Rochelle Revolution (Northeast Regional) and a semi-final come from behind 2-1 victory against highly regarded FC Westchester. The job of getting to a final was done. Now all that stood between Commack and a Championship was a very talented Blackwatch Midlothian team from Albany, New York. Commack had arranged for a charter bus to bring the boys up to the Championship game together. The trip to Stringham Park in Lagrange New York took a bit longer then anticipated but the boys spent the time watching an emotion filled motivational DVD with excerpts from movies such as Miracle, Rocky, Braveheart and Rudy just to name a few. As the bus approached the park the boys grew silent. A feeling of calm confidence permeated the bus. In a business like fashion Commack took the field for their customary warm-ups. Dressed in all black SC United was all business from the opening whistle. Both teams played well as the spent the first 10 minutes feeling each other out. Like two prize fighters they showed little jabs of offense trying to figure each other out. Commack struck first with a sensational goal 20 minutes into the game. Chris R. won a ball at midfield and quickly found one of United's strikers Sean B. Sean turned and moved forward before sliding a perfect through ball behind the defense to our other Sean. Sean S. took two touches and unleashed a strike worthy of an ESPN highlight tape. The left footed rocket from 25 yards out tucked itself neatly into the upper 90 on the keepers left side. The 1-0 lead was all that Commack's defense needed. Blackwatch, determined to draw even, pushed forward in wave after wave of attacks only to be stone walled time and time again. With 5 minutes left a Midlothian striker fired away what looked like the equalizer but the keeper’s best friend, the post, came up big. Andres M. was rock solid in goal commanding the penalty box and steering away any shots that came his way. In the end the one goal stood up and SC United had its first State Cup Championship. The complete roster of 16 players gave 110% during the game. All the players, coaches and parents are proud of this team. Their hard work and determination brought them this Championship. SC United will represent ENY in the Regional Tournament June 26 to July 1 in Portland, Maine. Monday, May 5 Commack SC United Advances to 2008 ENY State Cup Semi-final Match The Commack SC United advanced to the semi-finals of the Eastern New York State Cup with a 2-0 victory over the New Rochelle Revolution. In a hard fought game, Commack was able to net two beautiful goals while its defense frustrated and shut down the Revolution's offense. Sean B. put United up 1-0 with 5 minutes left in the first half with some very skilled foot work in New Rochelle's penalty box before pulling the trigger on a low hard shot. In a very physical second half United kept its composure and continued to pressure New Rochelle. United's constant pressure and hard work was rewarded with a free kick from 30 yards out. Alex W. unleashed a rocket that tucked itself neatly under the crossbar for a commanding 2-0 lead. From this point Commack's defense took over and shut down New Rochelle's offense. Commack had gotten to this point with victories over the Bayside Flames,2-0, the Bayside Aston Villa, last year's ENY State Cup Finalists, 3-2 on P.K.'s and a 2-0 victory over the Lake Grove Vipers. Commack will meet FC Westchester '94's in the semi-final match up on May 17th @ 12:30pm at the Burr Soccer Complex. Monday, October 15 Commack SC United WIns YMS Championship and HBC Labor Day Championship!!! Commack SC United completed a very successful fall tournament season with two very strong performances in two highly rated regional tournaments. SC United claimed Championships in both the YMS Columbus Cup and the HBC Labor Day Tournaments. Having been a participant at the YMS Columbus Cup for the past 5 years, SC United has navigated a long road to win an YMS Championship. Starting at U-10 United went 0-3-0, then at U-11 they were 0-0-3, a wash out due to rain at U-12, a semi-final lose on PK's at U-13 and finally a Championship at U-14. What a journey! SC United opened up with a 3-0 victory over Connecticut State Champions Beachside. Game 2 on day 1 was against FC Bucks United and again SC United shut out its opponent with a hard fought 2-0 win. Sunday morning found United in a well played and physical semi-final match against the Connecticut State Finalists West Hartford Premier. Commack battled back from an early 1-0 deficient to earn the equalizer. After 10 minutes of extra time and a couple of spectacular saves by Andres M. a place in the final came down to PK's. It is said that penalty kicks favors the shooters. This statement held true as 9 of the PK's taken found the back of the net. The only PK that didn't was saved by a diving SC United keeper. The Championship game matched SC United against a strong Bethesda United team. Both teams played hard and had their chances but the difference in the game came down to a deflected shot by Harry S. that spun its way into the lower corner of the net. That goal completed a long journey that took 5 years and many games but sometimes the journey is just as good as the destination! Additionally SC United used this year's Labor Day weekend as an opportunity to play close to home. Commack went 4-0 in the HBC Labor Day tournament scoring 17 goals and giving up only 2. The final found SC United playing Eastern FC Magic. Eastern had just won a US Club National Championship and represented a nice challenge for the squad especially since United played the complete tournament without its starting keeper. Jack M. and Phil D. shared keeper duties between the pipes and lead their team to a Championship. Tuesday, February 20 Commack SC United Finalist in Clyde Best Bermuda Invitational When Commack SC United accepted its invitation to play in their first international tournament they knew what it would mean, training outdoors throughout the winter. SC United didn't want to just attend this tournament, they wanted to be competitive and competitive they were! The list of opponents included the West Virginia state champions, WSC Eagles, the Maryland state champions and #9 team in the United States, Olney Rangers and the host's National team. The team arrived in Bermuda, after dodging the Jetblue debacle in New York, feeling excited and prepared. Unfortunately the weather left SC United without two of its players and one of its coaches as the flight they were to take was cancelled and not rescheduled for two days. It could have been very easy for the team to hang their heads and give less then a superior effort but rather then that the boys came together to play some of their best soccer. SC United started its tournament playing the Bermuda National team. The Bermudian hosts were a very talented and well coached group giving Commack all they could handle. United hung in only down 2-0 at half-time but couldn't get any closer as the game ended a very respectable 3-0. With its first every international game under its belt Commack's Bermudian hosts opened up their National Stadium, also known as "The Carpet", for SC United's second game. SC United focused in on the game they had been preparing for during their winter training sessions. The Olney Rangers were the defending Region 1 Champions as well as Maryland State Champions and came into this tournament ranked #9 in the USA. This game was to be the barometer by which Commack could measure itself. SC United came out quickly and scored in the first 5 minutes. Olney showed its composure and the reason why they are so highly regarded in the soccer community as the battled back to take a 2-1 lead. Reaching deep down Commack turned on the pressure the last 20 minutes of the game. With 5 minutes left Commack's tenacity was rewarded as Harry S. hammered home a 25 yard shot to pull United even. As SC United pressured Olney for the game winner time elapsed and Commack had a well played draw. Finishing the first day with 1 win and 1 lose meant that after a good night's sleep SC United would need to win their last group game against the West Virginia Sate Champs in order to advance to the tournament final. Again SC United was honored with playing on "The Carpet". This time United made sure that the results would never be in doubt as they thumped the WVSC Eagles 6-0. The win propelled them into a finals showdown with the Bermuda National team to be played in the Bermuda National Stadium. With the game scheduled for a 3:00 PM start SC United completed its warm-ups with out ever seeing "The Boys", as they are referred to in Bermuda, ever touch a ball. This was to be the first game the U-13 National team was to play in the National Stadium. With a healthy pro-Bermuda crowd in the stands it didn't take our hosts long to show their crowd something special. In the first 30 seconds Zico, you know the kid is good when at 13 years old he has only 1 name, beat the Commack defense and launched a rocket at the Commack goal. Andres M. was able to stop the first shot but the rebound came directly back to Zico who volleyed home another rocket for a 1-0 lead. Cow bells and cheers rained down from the stadium seats and SC United realized that they were facing a different team. This National team was like a rubber band fully stretched and ready to explode. The combination of playing in their National Stadium before a sizable crowd in their brand new all whites had inspired "The Boys". Much to SC United's credit the score remained 1-0 for the next 25 minutes. Repeatedly Commack caught the Bermudians off-sides. Despite all the effort the United boys put forward everyone in the Stadium knew that the National team was not going to be denied today. The game ended with Commack on the losing end of an 8-0 "thumping" as it was referred to in the National newspaper, BDA-Sun but in that game the SC United players grew as young men and as soccer players. As it became apparent that the result would be lopsided, SC United and Bermuda National players demonstrated superior sportsmanship. Andres M. wowed the crowd with spectacular and acrobatic saves that were met with applause from the pro Bermuda crowd. Pats on the back, a helpful hand to a fallen opponent culminated the weekend of great memories. Maybe some of the boys could have been skiing or traveling to Disney World or any number of other things during their President Day break but how many boys can someday tell their children that they played a National Team in the finals of an International Tournament in that country's National Stadium? Not too many. Wednesday, June 14 Commack SC United Accepts Invitation to Play Bermuda National Team in Bermuda Commack SC United has accepted an invitation to play in the Bermuda Clyde Best Invitational Tournament in February 2007. The invitational tournament will consist of SC United #20 in Region 1) along with 3 other top ranked teams, Olney Rangers (#10 USA, #3 Region 1, Maryland State Champions), West Virginia SC Eagles (West Virginia State Champions) and the Bermuda National team. SC United will have the opportunity to train at the Bermuda National team facility as well as play a match against the U-13 Bermuda National Team. In all Commack will play 4 games in Bermuda. This promises to be a tremendous challenge and a great soccer experience that the boys and their families will remember for the rest of their lives. Commack SC United Wins Second Consecutive LIJSL Div 1 Championship The Commack SC United completed a tremendous spring LIJSL season with a record of 9-0-0 and its second consecutive Division 1 Championship. On a sunny and breezy Saturday afternoon Commack beat the Syosset Cosmos 2-1. Syosset struck first with a curving, well placed corner kick that found its way into the back of the net. As Commack battled both the wind and the Cosmos SC United continued to look for the equalizer. From the top of Syosset's penalty box, Michael B. fed a nice ball outside to Phil D. who returned the favor by crossing it back to Michael. Mike's strong headball tied the score at 1. In the second half Commack pressed for the game winner. With under 5 minutes to play it was Jack M. who converted some nifty passing by chipping the Cosmo's keeper thus giving United it's 9th win in 9 tries this season. All of the SC United players played well during a season of tremendous accomplishments. We wish all the LIJSL teams well this summer as we look forward to yet another great season in the fall. Tuesday, April 25 Commack SC United Reaches Semi-final in FC Delco Players Cup The Commack SC United took advantage of the 2006 Memorial Day weekend to travel to the FC Delco Players Cup in Downingtown PA. What began with a disappointing loss the Bridgewater United (#15 in region 1) almost ended with an exciting semifinal win over Spirit United Celtic (#8 USA, #2 Region 1). In between SC United played some excellent soccer. The team needed to regroup after coming out flat against Bridgewater NJ's United team. Commack found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-0 shut-out and facing an immediate uphill battle to reach the play-offs. SC United's second game was against LMSC Pink Panthers(#16 Region1). This time Commack's defense tightened up and began what would be 3 straight games plus 2 overtimes of shut-out soccer. SC United defeated the Pink Panthers 1-0 with Jack M. tally the only goal needed. Our first day ended with the team 1 and 1 and still optimistic. The next morning Commack arrived at the beautiful United Sports Training Center to take on PSC Coppa 93 (#26 in USA, #7 Region1) Once again the defense stood strong posting it's second shut-out with Jake R. tallying the lone goal. As the boys waited for all the scores to get posted it started to become clear that the extra points earned through shut-outs had propelled SC United into a semifinal showdown with the host team Spirit United Celtic (#8 in USA, #2 Region 1). In a well fought contest Commack continued to keep the slate clean. Andres M. made numerous spectacular saves throughout the match as the Commack boys played with tireless effort. After the full 60 minutes and additional 10 minutes in overtime the ref blew the final whistle and we went to penalty kicks. The kicks went 8 deep before Spirit was able to take a goal edge and claim their spot in the finals, 6-5. SC United had an incredible showing and we are all very proud of their efforts. Congratulations on a great weekend. Sunday, May 7 Commack SC United Wins State Cup Quarter-final For Team's 100th Win!! The Commack SC United chose the right game to post their 100th team victory. SC United faced a strong Mt. Vernon Real team this Sunday with a spot in the Eastern New York State Cup semi-final on the line. Both teams played a strong first half which ended 0-0. SC United created a few good scoring chances but just couldn't find the back of the net. As the second half started United came out hustling. Commack's depth couldn't be matched as United wore down Real. No less then 2 crossbars and a couple of posts were hit as United pressed for the first goal but just like the first half, the score at the end of regulation was 0-0. Commack's anchor in the middle, Max A. finally found the back of the net 4 minutes into the first overtime. Much like they have done in the past, the defense took over from there with team Captain Nelson V., Alex W. , Brandon C. and Matthew T. shutting down the super Mt. Vernon strikers. Matching their strong performance, Andres M. played another sensational game between the pipes. Posting their 8th shut out in their last 10 games Commack celebrated its place in the State Cup Semi-final!. Saturday, April 29 Commack SC United Beat BW Gottschee 2-0 to Advance to NY State Cup Quarterfinals Commack SC United hadn't faced the two time NY State Champion BW Gottschee in over a year and a half. Last time they played, Gottschee (currently ranked #1 in NY, #8 in region 1 and #30 in USA) handed Commack a convincing 5-2 defeat. Today would be different. The two teams squared off today to decide who would continue on in the NY State Cup Championships and who gets to go home. The weather was as nice as the field. The game was played at BW Gottschee's home turf field in Queens NY. Commack opened the first half by scoring two goals. The first was a diving header by Max A. off a beautiful cross from Chris R. SC United's second goal came off a deflection of a Harry S. shot from 25 yards out. Armed with a 2-0 half-time lead Commack placed the game in its defense's hands or better yet, feet. Steady defense combined with exceptional goalkeeping by Andres M. resulted in Commack's 7th shut out in its last 8 games. The 2-0 victory propels SC United into its first ever NY State Cup quarterfinal. Thursday, April 27 Commack SC United Beats Albertson '93, Advances to Play BW Gottschee in State Cup On a beautiful spring evening Commack SC United matched up with the Albertson '93 Academy team in a NY State Cup round 3 game. Both teams played exceptionally well with Commack winning 1-0. Harry S. tallied the lone goal with a well placed shot from 25 yards out 10 minutes into the game. SC United's defense recorded its 6th shut out in its last 7 games by holding the Albertson strikers to a few shots on goal. Andres M. was solid between the pipes. With the win Commack advances to play the current two time NY State Champions, BW Gottschee on their home turf. The game is scheduled for 10:45 this Saturday at Brennan Park in Queens NY. This should prove to be a great test for SC United and the team is looking forward to it. Wednesday, August 24 Commack SC United Faces Nationally Ranked Teams The Commack SC United took the weekend of Aug 20th & 21st to head into Pennsylvania and participate in the Spirit United Kick-off Classic. On the schedule in its opening round play for SC United was the #13 nationally ranked Spirit United and the #33 ranked Highland Fever. The tournament got off to great start with SC United scoring in the first minute in its first game against Spirit United. SC United held the lead for a short time as Spirit began to show why it is a highly ranked team. By half-time Spirit was in the lead 2-1. SC United hung tough through the first 15 minutes of the second half but as they pressed to tie the game Spirit United capitalized with the final result ending up at 5-1. The score certainly did not reflect Commack's efforts. Next up for SC United was Highland Fever, currently #3 in New Jersey and #33 in the USA. This was a very entertaining game as goals came fast and furiously. In the end Commack SC United handed Highland a well fought 5-3 defeat. Nelson V. was the star of the game as he netted a hat-trick. In day two of the tournament SC United was matched up with current New Jersey State Champion Marlton Lightning. Marlton currently holds the #31 ranking in the USA. Marlton showed well and had a comfortable 2-0 lead at half-time. SC United dug deep and began the second half with a renewed urgency. Their efforts were rewarded as new SC United member Sean S. converted a P.K. to bring United within one. As United pressed so came the scoring chances. Harry S. pulled SC United even with a 20 yard blast. As the clock ticked off the final seconds a Marlton striker took the game in his own hands and made a wonderful run finishing it off with a well placed shot, a game winner at that. Although SC United finished with a 1 win, 2 lose record, the team felt they showed that they can play with anyone. Sometimes the wins and losses don't tell the full story....last weekend was one of those times. SC United Globall Holiday Tournament Champs The Commack SC United took some time out of its Holiday break to lace up the boots and play some soccer. SC United now places it's sights on the Fall 2004 LIJSL season where it will face powerful league teams in Smithtown, Dix Hills and new Suffolk D1 opponent Albertson '93. The team is also looking forward to participating in the YMS Columbus Day tournament where it has been accepted into the Premier division. Playing 3 abbreviated games in 3 hours Commack posted a 3-0 win over host Stony Brook, a 2-0 win over Ronkonkoma Warriors and finished with a well played 1-0 win over the Lake Grove Vipers. These 3 wins, combined with Saturday's victory, gave SC United an undefeated 4-0 record and it's second Tournament Championship in the last 3 weeks. All the boys played well. As United came out of half time with a 1-0 lead, Commack went at Albertson with everything they had. Jack M. blasted home the second goal of the game. His goal was followed quickly by a beautiful goal by Andy G. With SC United up 3-0 Albertson never gave up. The Animals got one back making the score 3-1. Keeping their composure against a fine opponent, SC United forged ahead. Brandon F. slammed home a perfect pass from Max A. to score Commack's 4th goal. Their was no let up from Alberston despite being down by 3. Instead the Animals finished off 2 breakaways to narrow the SC United's lead to just one goal with about one minute left. As the final seconds ticked off the clock Albertson sent yet another player through for a break away. As the game narrowed to just 2 players, Jake R., SC United's goaltender, and an Albertson forward, parents, coaches and players held a collective breath. As he has done so many times before for the Commack SC United Jake R. came off his line to stuff the Albertson forward and give United it's first Waldbaum's Cup Championship. Congratulations to all the SC United players. This Championship is the culmination of a year's hard work. We are proud of every single one of you. We'd like to thank Albertson for such a well contested match. Monday, June 21 Commack SC United Finalists in Hershey Invitational. Commack SC United traveled to Hershey Pa. for the Kicks 4 Kids Hershey Invitational Soccer Tournament. It was a fun filled weekend, with visits to Chocolate World, Hershey Park and even the first ever SC United Mini Golf tournament filling in the time between games. As far as soccer was concerned Commack played some brilliant ball. After loosing it's opening game 2-1 in a hotly contested and poorly refereed game, United came back and won it's next 2 games 4-3 and 1-0. These wins placed Commack in the finals against Bridgewater United from New Jersey. After working it's way to a 2-0 lead, SC United's abbreviated roster of 10 players took it's toll on the team. Bridgewater came back with 4 unanswered goals to snatch a tournament final victory from Commack's hands. All in all it was a great weekend. SC United would like to thank Alex W. and Ali G. for stepping in as guest players and performing exceptionally. United will now use the next few weeks to take a break from the pitch and prepare to come back for a very busy August. Thank you to all the families who took the trip to Hershey. Your support and enthusiasm is always appreciated. Commack SC United Virginian Cup Finalists It started out a little shaky, down 3-0 to the Manhattan Kickers, but a comeback in that game was all SC United needed to propel it into the Virginian Cup finals. A fantastic weekend of soccer, 5 exciting games, laughter and camaraderie were all packed into last weekend's Memorial Day tournament in Quantico Virginia. The Manhattan Kickers came ready to play early Saturday morning. After the first 15 minutes the Kickers lead 3-0 and SC United faced a grim prospect, get it's act together or struggle through the weekend. With 30 seconds left in the first half Commack got it together. Frank V. hammered home a shot from the top of the penalty box to cut the lead to 3-1 and the charge to the finals began. As the whistle blew to begin the second half SC United came out flying. Constant pressure lead to 2 second half goals and a well earned tie. Next up came the VYS Rebels. This game was a well fought, tightly contested match with SC United coming out on top 2-0. With Saturday's games completed United stood at 1-0-1 and only one win away from a spot in the semi-finals. Standing between that spot and SC United came the BAC Boca Red, a strong team playing in it's home state. Again SC United fell behind 1-0. No panicking here, instead SC United continued to play it's game. Pressuring Boca at ever opportunity. That pressured paid off with 10 seconds left in the first half as Jack M. finished off a nice passing play to even up the score. Again, SC United came out of the half time gunning. In a barrage of offense Commack went on to score 3 goals in the first 4 minutes of the second half. Much to the credit of BAC Boca the game was not over yet. Boca battled back and scored twice to cut SC's lead to 4-3. Commack's goalkeeping was spectacular all weekend and Jake R. came up big as a Boca player charged down the field one on one with Jake R., only 60 seconds left on the clock. With out hesitation Jake R. charged the shooter and made a game saving play. United wins 4-3 and moves on to the semi's. Riding high from three exciting games, Commack now faced MATT Rockets in the semi-final. MATT Rockets had won their division out scoring their opponents 18-8. As if it was only a formallity, SC United stormed through the Rockets 4-0. United unleashed an awesome display of possession and hard nosed defense combined with some of the prettiest goals scored all tournament. After a nice dinner and a good night's sleep United faced MSC Rangers out of Maryland. The Rangers had disposed of Silver Lake NY 7-0 in the other semi final. Commack played a great game the last 49 minutes and 30 seconds. It was a miscommunication in the first 30 seconds that lead to a disappointing 1-0 defeat. All in all it was a fantastic weekend. All the SC United players showed their stuff. United received many compliments through out the tournament and we look forward to going back next year a avenging our finals loss. Thursday, March 4 Commack SC United Takes Home UBS Cup The Commack SC United spent this past winter training hard at the United States Soccer Academy.
