Columbus Police baseball history and management
The Columbus Police baseball team was founded in the winter of 2004. Officers Polgar and Morrell wanted to get back to the game they loved and began to recruit from within the department. After a month long search there was a meeting of all interested players. The Bulldogs name was adopted as the team mascot. The team was formed of 21 players from all areas of the dept. Practice began in February with indoor workouts and eventually outside. The first season the team went 8-14-2 but learned a lot and broke off years of rust. Some highlights of the inagural season were that 3rd baseman Rich Weiner was the 2nd leading batter in the Columbus mens senior baseball league and 43rd in the country. Scott Martin was 3rd in the league in strikeouts with 74. Catcher , Deryl Kowalski was voted by his teamates to be the representative for the All Star game. Season two brought the Bulldogs a better record as the team went 12-8 in league play. The boys in blue also went to the semi finals in the Kick Off Classic in Las Vegas in March of 2006. The Bulldogs also hosted NYPD, FDNY, Chicago Police and Chicago Fire in the 1st annual Central Ohio Public Safety Tournament. FDNY defeated NYPD in a great game at Cooper Stadium. The Bulldogs went 1-2 in the CMSBL Tournament. The Bulldogs also played the Cincinnati Colt 45s at the Coop tp raise money for the Buckeye Sertoma Club.
The 2009 season had many ups and downs but was another great year of baseball for the CPD Squad. The Bulldogs went 14-16 overall but only after an 0-6 start to the regualr season. The team travelled to Las Vegas for the Las Vegas Open and the team stayed at the Harrahs. Lots of swimming, baseball and good times had by the players and some wives. The dogs also played at Bill Davis Stadium vs. the Ohio Highway Patrol and raised $ 5000.00 for the Alzheimer's Association. The team travelled to Chicago to battle other Police and Fire teams from around the USA. The Bulldogs finished 4th in their local division of the Columbus MSBL and did went 1-2 in the local tournament. Our Team also raised $ 16,000.00 for Get Bhenind the Badge with a celebrity bartending night at the Park St. Patio. Celebrity bartenders were Kirk Herbstriet (ESPN), Jimmy Jam (WNCI) and Columbus Bluejackets, Rick Nash-Mike Commodore and Derrick Brassard. Another special year as we get the represent the Division of Police and play the game we love. Here's to another great year in 2010
