ICE EAGLES ARE PROUD TO ONCE AGAIN PLAY AN EXIBITION WITH THE GATEWAY LOCOMOTIVES

March 25, 2012, is almost here. Circle this date on your calendar and add it to your apointments.  On this date, the Columbia Ice Eagles will once again play an exibition game with the Gateway Locomotives.  If you're not familiar with this team, you should be.  It's made of players with special needs.  If you saw the game last year, you know what I mean, when I say you're in for a treat.  You've never seen people so happy to play the game or more excited when they score a goal.  I know our players left the ice last year with a better understanding of life and a smile on their face.  Come out to the Mills at 4:50 on this date and be prepared to see a side of hockey you never knew existed and to leave with a hint of moisture in your eyes!

EAGLES END THE SEASON WITH A 5-1 LOSS TO COLLINSVILLE

Well, this was the story I didn't want to write!  Last night we were beaten by a team who played better than we did, not a team that is better than us!  Those who have followed this team and the stories I have written, know this isn't sour grapes.  Good luck to Collinsville as they represent the East Division in the Gail.

There isn't much to report except that we were outplayed from the end of the 1st period right thru the end.  When you give up 2 shorthanded goals, you can't expect to win.  Like all our wins this year, this was a team loss!  Having said that, I wouldn't trade our team for any in the League.  We lost but we lost with the same class we displayed when we won.

It's been a pleasure working with this year's board, coaches and of course the Kids (young men and woman).  Any time you have a record of 19 wins, 3 loses, and 1 tie, the season was a success.  We scored 186 goals and only allowed 33.  I'd take that every season!

Instead of talking about individual players, we'll leave that for the banquet.  I'll only say that the fans and especially the parents and grandparents, were one of the keys to this teams great season.  I've gotten to know most of you and value your friendship.  Since I'll be around for at least one more year, I'll really miss the families that played their last regular game for the Ice Eagles.  Come back when you can and thanks for sharing your family over the years.  We'll get together for one last game when we play the Gateway Locomotives.  See you there.

Oh well, wait till next year!

Dusty

EAGLES ROAR BACK WITH A 7-0 WIN ON VALENTINES DAY

Monday night we lost 5-2. We scored 2 goals on 32 shots.  We allowed 5 goals on 13 shots.  Forget about it!

The real Eagles showed up on Tuesday.  They outshot Collinsville 34 to 5 and scored 7 times.  The teams leading scorers where shut out on Monday but accounted for 11 points on Tuesday.  In a penalty filled game, the Eagles were only sent to the box 3 times with no major penalties, while  Collinsville accounted for 17 with several majors and a game misconduct

Through no fault of the Collinsville players, the refs called the game with about 2 minutes to go due to fans(?) throwing objects on the ice.  I'm glad to say it wasn't any Columbia fans!

At 9:36 of the 1st period, Tyler Overmann got things started with a power play goal that proved to be the game winner.  Matt Royer got the next 2 goals and Alex Nanna (the Birthday Boy) got another one to make it 4-0 at the end of the 1st period.

At 9:01 of the 2nd period, Royer got his 3rd goal for a hat trick.  The final 2 goals were scored in the 3rd period.  At 8:49, Kyle Steibel connected to make it 6-0 and Royer scored at 7:15 making the final score 7-0 for the good guys.  Mike Juenger had the other assist.

This was a total team win like the majority of the games this year.  The scorers get the head lines but everyone out on the ice has contributed in some way.  Congratulations on a great win by the team and the coaches.

Now we come back (remember the Cardinals this summer in game 6) and play our game on Thursday.  Same location, same teams, same time.

Thanks to the crowd of parents and students for being great, classy fans.

See you there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EAGLES LOSE 1ST GAME OF SERIES, 5-2

Collinsville wins the 1st game of the series.  Game over, time to concentrate on game number 2.  See you there!

Thursday, February 9
EAGLES ARE READY TO DO BATTLE WITH COLLINSVILLE FOR THE DIVISION TITLE

First congratulations to the Collinsville team on a hard fought win over Triad.  9 rounds in a shoot out is something.  Now they get to meet the Ice Eagles in a best of 3 series, starting Monday, February 13, at the Fairview Heights Rink.  Be there when the puck drops at 8:15 and cheer on your Team as they continue their quest for the Gail.

The team needs your support more than ever, so come early, cheer loudly, and remember, we're a team and a school with class!  Also make plans for the next night, same location and same time.  A win on both nights would make an unforgettible Valentines present for that special someone (your mom, girlfriend, etc.)  BE THERE!

Thursday, February 2
EAGLES MOVE TO EAST DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP BY BEATING FREEBURG 7-1

In a slow moving, sometimes boreing game, the Eagles scored 7 goals and moved past Freeburg to the East Championship Round.  There was no score in the 1st period although Columbia had 14 shots.  The Freeburg Goalie, Fannon, would end up stopping 37 shots out of a total of 44!

The Ice Eagles finally broke the snide on a goal from the Captain, Alex Nanna.  The scoring for this game:

Kyle Steibel had a hat trick, Alex Nanna had 2 goals and 1 assist, Matt Royer had 2 goals and 2 assists, Mitchell Cookson had 2 assist, Joe Bert had 3 assist, and Michael Juenger had 1 assist.

Anytime you win a playoff game, don't have anyone injured, and manage to avoid any penalty carryovers, it was a good win.

Our next game, depending on how the Collinsville-Triad series turns out, will be on Monday, February 13, at the Fairview Heights Rink.  Puck drops at 8:15.  This could change if the other series only goes 2 games instead of 3.  We'll let you know.

Monday, January 30
EAGLES TOP FREEBURG 10-1 IN THE FIRST ROUND OF PLAYOFFS

In a game they were expected to win, the Eagles started slow but picked up the pace and ended up scoring 9 unanswered goals.  Freeburg got an outstanding game from their goalie who seemed to stop everything in the early part of the 1st period.

Overall, Coach Royer stated he was happy with the game and is looking forward to Thursday night when the battle continues.  The scoring was spread out over numerous players.  Joe Bert lead the way with 3 goals along with 3 by the Captain, Alex Nanna.

The scoring for the game went like this:

Joe Bert 3 goals, Alex Nanna 3 goals and 1 assist, Kyle Steibel 1 goal and 2 assists, Matt Royer 1 goal and 2 assists, Michael Cookson, 1 goal and 1 assist, Zack Fleming 3 assists, Colin Juengling 1 assist, Jake Rein 1 assist, and Tyler Overmann 1 assist.

The game Thursday will be at the Fairview Height Rink at 6:50.  Come ready to back your team as they continue their quest for the GAIL!

COLUMBIA PROVIDES THE STARS AT THE ALL STAR GAME

It doesn't count in the standing.  It's not an offical League Game. However, it sure felt good to travel to East Alton and come away with a win.  The East All Stars, led by a group of Ice Eagles, buried the West All Stars, 12 to 5 on a night when the Eagles soared!  Oh, by the way, they also won the skills competition!

Columbia players accounted for 7 of the goals and assisted on most of the other 5.  Kevin allowed just 1 goal in his 1 period share of the game.  He was also sharp in the skills competition.

I didn't get to see the score sheet so I don't have all the stats for the game.  I do know that Alex Nanna,  Kyle Steibel, and Zach Fleming had 2 goals each and Matt Royer, added another. Tyler Overmann and Michael Juenger assisted on several goals and contributed to the outstanding showing by the Columbia All Stars.  Tyler was especially effective scoring 8 or 9 goals in the rapid shoot out skills competition.

Congratulations to all of our guys for a supurb job and a special pat on the back to Coach Royer, who was the winning All Star Coach for the 2nd time!  This was a great warmup for the playoffs.  See you at the next game!

One last thought.  It's great to see the support by our fans but I'd like to single out the grandparents that I see at almost every game.  Thanks for being there!

A FEW FINAL WORDS ABOUT THE 2010-11 EAGLES SEASON

First, it has been a pleasure writing these summeries.  Thanks to Jeff Steibel for allowing me to do this.  As most of you know, I've been associated with the Columbia Eagles for approximately 7 years.  Rob started playing in the 8th Grade and is now a Sophomore at Mizzou, so that sounds right.  I keep having to trade cars as the 80+ miles from St. Peters to Fairview really adds up!  I wouldn't want it any other way.

Just to remind you of what a great season we had, here are a few statistics:

The Eagles played 23 varsity games with a 16 wins and 7 losses record.  This included a 2nd place finish in the leaque and a 2nd place finish in the playoffs. Columbia scored 130 goals and allowed only 66.

The JV team finished with a record of 18 wins and 2 losses.  They finished 2nd in the leaque and just got beat out in the playoffs.  There were 107 goals scored by the Eagles and they only allowed 32.

There were some interesting individual statistics as well.  Kevin Shreckenberg played 43 games, winning 16 varsity and 18 J.V.  He faced 457 shots and allowed 98 goals.  His save percentage was 83.4.  It was Kevin's first year as a high school goalie!  He should be ready to go all the way next year!

For the first time in Eagles recorded history, a player ended up with over 100 points in JV and Varsity combined games.  Matt Royer had 109 points in 40 games.  55 of those points came from 33 varsity goals and 23 assists.  Alex Nanna had 75 combined points in 32 games and Zach Fleming had 60 in 40 games.  Kyle Steibel, who didn't play JV had 45 points with 28 goals in 22 games.  And the best part of these statistics is that all of these players return for next season!  Add in the experience and maturity of those young freshman and sophomores who were playing for only the first or second year and things really look good.

The only thing I can add to this is the pleasure of watching some wonderful coaches who believe that coaching isn't just about x's and o's but about preparing young men for life after hockey.  Our teams play with class, first and foremost and sportsmanship is taught right along with defense.  Thanks to the families and fans who support the team win or lose.  The Eagles will be back next year stronger than ever.  My wife and I have made some wonderful friends and look forward to Seeing you in October.
