Pop Warner Little Scholars FAQ
Colonie Pop Warner not only excels on the football field and in cheerleading, but now we can show how everyone how we excel in the classroom.

Evan Gordon is the first Capital District Pop Warner student ever to receive the Nationally recognized award.

This past weekend the winners of the National All-American Second Team and Honorable Mentions were announced. Colonie Pop Warner has had three more students named to these teams.

Jami June - National All-American Second Team Grade 6

Louis DiNovo,Keith Niekarz,Katherine Paeglow,Rachael Peterson - National All-American Second Team Grade 7

Alison Floyd - National All-American Second Team Grade 8 and above

Paige Rueckert - Honorable Mention

In order to apply for the Pop Warner Little Scholars program, students must have completed grade 5 and have a grade point average of 96% or better for the entire school year. They also must show that they are well rounded, by listing all extra curricular activities that are not sports.

Congratulations to all the scholars, we at Colonie Pop Warner are very proud of all you have achieved.

The Complete list of students that were given this award can be found at the National Pop Warner Website.

Each year, the most academically accomplished Pop Warner kids compete for Academic All-American status. This process begins at the association level and up through each of the eight Pop Warner regions to the national level.

In 2003, approximately 360,000 kids participated in Pop Warner. Incredibly, more than 45,000 achieved regional pre-qualifying status for national recognition. As our numbers once again reached record levels, 229 First Team members and over 3,800 Second Team members were named PWLS Academic All-Americans at the National Level in 2003.

The PWLS All-American Program requires a minimum 96% grade point average to apply for All-American status. After the applications have been processed, Pop Warner determines National First Team All-Americans (35 football, 25 cheer per grade) and National Second Team All-Americans.

ALL-AMERICAN SELECTION PROCESS:
a. A final score is calculated for each student that consists of up to 100 points (85%) for the student's grades for the prior school year, along with up to 18 points (15%) awarded for the attached Addendum sheet of activities and achievements.

b. Once the scores have been calculated, First Team All-Americans are selected. The top 35 football players and 25 cheerleaders per grade (plus ties) are selected as National First Team All-Americans.

c. Second Team All-Americans are then determined by Pop Warner based upon the number of applications that were submitted for that year. Last year's total was approximately 3,800 Second Team All-Americans

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Pop Warner will announce its annual Scholar All-Americans each year on April 1st. Each scholar will receive an informational packet in the mail by the end of April that includes:

a. Congratulatory letter from Pop Warner indicating their scholastic accomplishment.

b. Certificate of achievement for National All-Americans.

c. Information regarding the Pop Warner National All-American Banquet.

FREQUENTLY ASK QUESTIONS ON THE LITTLE SCHOLARS PROGRAM:

What is the difference between First Team and Second Team All-American?
A First Team All-American is one of the top 35 football players or top 25 cheerleaders for his/her grade nationwide! A Second Team All-American consists of those scholars who are above an annually increasing final score (GPA + addendum), ranging last year from 97.5 -100.5!

If my son/daughter makes First Team for his/her region, are they automatically a National First Team All-American?
No. Regional awards and National awards are separate from each other. You must understand that while someone makes First Team at the Region Level, he/she is competing against the entire nation at the National Level.

What is an All-American Senior Scholar and are they the only ones eligible for scholarships at the Awards Program in May?
An All-American Senior Scholar is a First Team recipient in grades 8, 9 or 10. Yes, they are the only Scholar All-Americans who are eligible for scholarships.

How big of an accomplishment is it to be named as a Pop Warner All-American Scholar?
A very tremendous accomplishment! If your son/daughter is recognized as a Pop Warner All-American Scholar, then he/she is amongst the top 1% of all Pop Warner participants. They are also eligible to attend our Awards Recognition Program held annually which commemorates their achievements on the field, in the classroom and in the community.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE COLONIE POP WARNER LEVEL:
By Joanne Mulligan

In August I will pass out packets (forms, instructions, etc.) to those students that meet the criteria. Parents and students need to fill them out and return them to me. (Due date will be determined). From there the forms go to Capital District, who in turn submits them to Eastern Region, (Eastern Region picks an All-American team, but it is separate from the National Team) then on to National Pop Warner.

All eligible participants (who fill out and submit an application) will attend a luncheon locally, sponsored by Capital District Pop Warner. If picked for the Eastern region team, they attend a brunch in New Jersey. And if picked for the National team they will be able to attend a banquet in Walt Disney World (FL) or Disneyland (CA). The 2004 team will attend Disneyland and the 2005 team will go to Walt Disney World. (They alternate each year.)

To be picked for this is a tremendous honor for your son/daughter. Last year we at Colonie Pop Warner, had 14 students eligible to participate, but only eight actually filled out the forms. For the 2005 season, I am trying to have 100% participation.

Each year in addition to recognition, several scholarships are awarded ranging from $500.00 to $5,000.00.
