Colonie Pop Warner Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why does practice start on August 1st ?
A: A number of reasons, the league mandates that each player have a minimum of 10 hours practice time before contact and an additional 10 hours before scrimmaging. Since many people take vacations in August, the additional practice time ensures players are conditioned and qualified for play.
Q: When and where is practice?
A: August 1st at 6:00 p.m. is the first day of Colonie Pop Warner practice for flag, tackle and cheerleaders. All practices for the month of August are held at Roessleville School, 100 California Avenue, Colonie, NY (located right behind Kurver Kreme)
Q: What if my family takes vacation during the month of August?
A: National Pop Warner rules specify that:
1. Football players must complete 10 hours of practice before participating in contact drills.
2. Football players and spirit participants must complete 20 hours of practice before participating in inter-squad scrimmages.
3. Players must practice a minimum of 4 hours in a game week or be ineligible for that week’s game. In addition, Colonie Pop Warner implements the following policy for spirit participants:
If a spirit participant is out two consecutive days in August, they may be replaced by a name of the waiting list.
Needless, to say, the program can only be successful if the players turn up for practice. We ask that all players make every effort to be at every practice during the month of August and throughout the season.
Q: What if it rains? Do we still have practice? How do I know?
A: Practices would only be cancelled if there was thunder and lightning. We do practice in the rain. Because cancellations occur at the last minute, there is often no way to implement a phone tree. When in doubt, come to the field. Parents if the weather looks inclement, DO NOT leave the practice field. You know how quickly storms can move in during the summer months.
Q: Do we need to purchase equipment for a participant?
A: All equipment is provided to flag and tackle football players. You will need to purchase a mouthpiece. Cleats are optional. Cheerleaders are provided with uniforms. Cheerleaders will need to purchase bloomers and sneakers. They keep the bloomers and sneakers after the season is over. All equipment and uniforms MUST be returned at the end of the season. Any unreturned equipment will be the financial responsibility of the participant and his/her family. Make sure that you return the equipment at the end of the season. The cost to equip a tackle player is approximately $200, cheerleader $160, and tackle player $50.
Q: Is anybody involved in Colonie Pop Warner paid for their effort?
A: CPW is a completely volunteer organization.
Q: How long has Pop Warner football existed?
A: Pop Warner football has been around since 1929. Colonie Pop Warner has been in existence since 1961.
Q: Isn't football dangerous? I'm afraid my child might get hurt.
A: Did you know that Pop Warner football is safer than soccer? Pop Warner football has 12% fewer injuries per capita among 5-15 year olds than organized soccer in the same age range! (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, NEISS)
Q: My child doesn’t live within the South Colonie Central School District; can he/she still participate with the Colonie Pop Warner program?
A: The rule is that the boundary for recruitment is the school district boundary. Therefore, Colonie Pop Warner has the exclusive right to recruit in the South Colonie Central School District only. A team cannot recruit or accept children from another area that has an active Pop Warner association except under specific circumstances. If a player wishes to join an “Away” team, there must be a written waiver from the Home Association President unless that Home association is not fielding a team at the level the child will be playing OR the child began Pop Warner involvement under such an arrangement and wishes to continue with that same “Away” association.
Q: So, about how many people are involved ?
A: Everyone who is a part of Colonie Pop Warner is involved in Colonie Pop Warner. Every parent and their kids work as volunteers raising funds through raffle ticket sales and candy sales. (In addition, there may be post-season fundraising done). Every parent is responsible to do one stand dutyr per child per season.
During this season the Colonie Pop Warner Football League will include approximately 300 children between the ages of 5 and 14 playing flag and tackle football, roughly 230 cheerleaders and some 150 parent volunteers.
These volunteers spend considerable time coaching, team parents, commissioners, medics, statisticians, repairing equipment, selling at the snack bar, maintaining the football fields and managing the entire operation. It takes each and everyone of us to have a successful program.
Q: How do you address sportsmanship in competition?
A: Pop Warner football is all about creating a safe and fun environment to learn teamwork and discipline through football. The following is a statement that is read at every Pop Warner game. THE CAPITAL DISTRICT POP WARNER FEDERATION REQUIRES OFFICIALS TO ENFORCE ALL SPORTSMANLIKE RULES FOR ATHLETES AND COACHES.""WE WILL NOT TOLERATE NEGATIVE STATEMENTS OR ACTIONS BETWEEN OPPOSING PLAYERS, ESPECIALLY TRASH-TALKING, TAUNTING OR BAITING OF OPPONENTS.""THE OFFICIALS HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED NOT TO ISSUE WARNINGS. PLEASE CONSIDER THIS DUE NOTICE AND LET TODAY'S CONTEST REFLECT MUTUAL RESPECT."
