Riverbend 3, Colonial Forge 4

In the final game of the season Colonial Forge won a thrilling victory over visiting Riverbend High School and finished their season with a .500 record. The game took nine innings to decide a winner and was tight throughout. The Eagles took a 2-1 lead into the top of 7th inning but the Bears plated two runs off reliever Steven Paugh to go up 3-2. With two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, Luke Minicucci drove in Darin Sharpe with a hard single up the middle to tie the game. Though both teams had plenty of chances to score, the Eagles prevailed in the bottom of the 9th inning when Paugh drove a single over the drawn-in outfield to score Sharpe, who was on 3rd base. Sharpe had walked to lead off the inning, and then went from 1st to 3rd base on a perfect bunt by freshman Scott Gates. Steven Paugh then came up to drive in Sharpe. Chase Boster and Paugh combined to surrender only seven hits and three runs in their nine innings of work. On the offensive side, the Eagles had eight total hits from eight different batters. With the victory, the Eagles finished 9-9.

Brooke Point 0, Colonial Forge 2 Game 2

The JV Eagles bounced back from a Game 1 loss to split with the Brooke Point Black Hawks in a doubleheader. The Eagles offense produced only two hits, but it was bailed out by a great pitching performance by sophomore Sean Baldwin. Baldwin threw a complete game 4-hit shutout. He also struck out nine Brooke Point hitters in just five innings of work. Offensively, the Eagles did not produce their first hit until the 4th inning. James Keller walked to lead off the inning and then was driven in by Chase Bosters double in the gap. Boster then scored off an error by the left fielder, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Luke Minicucci had the other hit for the Eagles.

Colonial Forge 4, Brooke Point 5 Game 1

The Colonial Forge Eagles dropped the first game of a doubleheader to Brooke Point 5-4. In the 5-inning game, all runs were scored in the first two innings of play. Brooke Point jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the 1 st inning off of starter Josh Orrick. The Eagles plated two runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Black Hawks scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the 2nd inning. The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 5-4, and the score did not change for the rest of the game. The Eagles offense managed only 2 hits in the game singles by Anthony Malocu, Kyle Mikula, and James Keller. The loss dropped the Eagles to 7-9 on the season.

Mountain View 12, Colonial Forge 13

In just four innings of play, the Mountain View and Colonial Forge squads combined for 25 runs on 30 hits before the game was called due to time restraints.  After falling behind 7-0, the Eagles’ offense exploded for ten runs off of nine hits in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  Mountain View stormed right back with three runs in the top of the 3rd inning to tie the game 10-10.  The Eagles then took a 12-10 lead in the bottom of the frame before once again allowing the Wild Cats to tie the game 12-12.  With 2 outs in the bottom of the 4th inning, James Keller smacked a single to center that scored Ben Morgan with the winning run, as the umpires ended the game after Morgan crossed the plate.  The Eagles set a season high for runs and hits, pounding out 14 singles and two doubles.  Keller, Anthony Malocu, and Lucas Behning had three hits apiece for Colonial Forge.  Keller and Chase Boster combined for seven RBIs and every Eagles starter scored at least one run.  The Eagles used three pitchers with Boster cleaning up for the victory.

Albemarle 3, Colonial Forge 4 – Game 2

Albemarle and Colonial Forge once again found themselves in a one-run game in the second contest of their doubleheader.  After dropping the first game 2-1, the Eagles bounced back for a 4-3 victory.  After falling behind 3-0 in the 3rd inning, the Colonial Forge offense scored a run in the bottom of the frame, and then plated three more runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to take a 1-run lead.  Sean Baldwin and Ben Morgan had four of the Eagles’ five hits with two hits apiece, and freshman Chase Boster executed a perfect suicide squeeze to score Luke Minicucci with the go-ahead run.  Baldwin pitched the last 2 1/3 innings of the game, shutting down the Patriots and earning his first pitching victory of the season.

Colonial Forge 1, Albemarle 2  - Game 1

The Albemarle Patriots beat Colonial Forge in game 1 of a doubleheader in a classic pitcher’s duel.  Sophomore Cody Quick surrendered only three hits and 1 earned run in his four innings of work.  Unfortunately, the Eagles’ offense mustered only two hits and one run.  The eventual winning run for the Patriots was scored in the 2nd inning after the Albemarle hitter walked, stole a base and scored on an error by the Colonial Forge centerfielder.  Ben Morgan and Sean Baldwin had the only hits for the Eagles, who left five men on base.

Colonial Forge 5, Massaponax 6

Colonial Forge followed up their best performance of the season with another uninspired game, losing to Massaponax High School 6-5.  The Eagles defeated the Panthers 9-1 earlier in the season but struggled from start to finish in the district matchup.  Coming off of a 14-hit performance, the Eagles managed only three hits in the first six innings and finished with five hits in the game.  Ben Morgan had two of the five hits.  The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the game, taking advantage of sloppy play by the Panthers.  Yet, the Panthers battled back to tie the game in the 5th inning.  At that point, starter Chase Boster was relieved by Morgan, who gave up a run in the bottom of the 6th inning.  The Eagles rallied in the top of the 7th inning, plating two runs to take the lead.  Again, sloppy play by Massaponax allowed Darin Sharpe and James Keller to score.  But in the bottom of the 7th inning, Keller allowed the tying- and winning runs to score on bases-loaded walks.  With the loss, the Eagles fell to 5-7, already matching the most losses by any Colonial Forge JV team this decade, with eight games left to play.  It is also the third 1-run loss for the Eagles this season.

Colonial Forge 9, North Stafford 5

The JV Eagles bounced back from a terrible loss 4 days earlier with an impressive 9-5 victory over North Stafford in a district matchup.  After surrendering 14 runs to the Wolverines in the previous game, Colonial Forge shut down the North Stafford offense with solid defense and a great pitching performance from Cody Quick.  After allowing two hits and two runs in the opening frame, Quick gave up no hits and no runs until the 7th inning.  The sophomore gave up three runs in the 7th inning before James Keller came in and shut the door on the rally.  On the offensive side, The Eagles’ bats came alive with 14  hits – their most of the season.  Sean Baldwin led the attack with three hits, while Keller, Ben Morgan, Kyle Mikula, Chase Boster, and Luke Minicucci had 2 hits each.  Minicucci and Morgan combined for 6 RBIs while Mikula blasted the team’s first home run of the season.

North Stafford 14, Colonial Forge 1

Colonial Forge suffered their worst loss in recent school history with a 14-1 drubbing at the hands of North Stafford.  Three Colonial Forge pitchers combined to allow 10 earned runs on 12 hits and 5 walks.  Offensively, The Eagles managed only three hits and only got 2 runners past 1st base.  It was the third win for the Wolverines versus the Eagles in the four games, with a fifth game in the future.

Colonial Forge 6, Spotsylvania 4

The JV Eagles won the first game of a round-robin doubleheader with a lack-luster victory over Spotsylvania High School.  The Eagles struck out 10 times and left 10 men on base in a game that was close from start to finish.  The Eagles started off the game hot with three runs in the first inning; their most in the 1st inning this season.  However, the Knights plated three runs in the bottom half of the frame.  After Colonial Forge went ahead 4-3 in the 3rd inning, the Knights again tied the game with a run in the bottom of the 4th inning.  The game stayed tied until Darin Sharpe gave the Eagles the lead with an RBI single in the top of the 7th inning.  The Eagles added another run on a throwing error by Spotsylvania.  Cody Quick, who relieved starter Josh Orrick in the 3rd inning, finished the game and picked up the victory.  Quick allowed only two hits and no earned runs over the last five innings of the contest.

Colonial Forge 9, Riverbend 10

Colonial Forge took a 9-3 lead into the bottom of the 5th inning before giving up seven unanswered runs to lose 10-9 to Riverbend High School.  The Eagles’ offense pounded out 11 hits and matched their biggest run-output of the season.  Sophomore James Keller led the hitting, going 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs.  It was the first 3-hit game by any Eagle this season. Steven Paugh, Kyle Mikula, and Chase Boster added two hits apiece.  Cody Quick gave Colonial Forge a solid effort on the mound, pitching 4 1/3 innings and giving up only 1 earned run.  But for the second game in a row, the Eagles’ defense gave up six unearned runs with poor fielding, and allowed the Bears to come back and steal victory away.

Colonial Forge 1, Stafford 11

For the first time in recent memory, the Colonial Forge JV team lost a game as a result of the ten-run rule.  In a sloppy-played game, the Eagles gave up six unearned runs and collected only four hits in the loss.  Kyle Mikula went 2 for 2 for the Eagles but the rest of the team managed only two hits.  Starting pitcher Chase Boster took the loss for the Eagles.  Boster threw four innings and gave up two earned runs.

Colonial Forge 7, Mountain View 2

In their sharpest game of the season, the Colonial Forge JV baseball team defeated Mountain View 7-2 and improved to 3-0 in the district.  Freshman Chase Boster struck out eight batters and scattered six hits over five innings.  Boster gave up only one earned run before giving way to Sean Baldwin in the sixth inning.  Baldwin pitched the final two innings, earning his first save of the season.  Both teams struggled to score runs throughout the contest, and the Eagles took a 3-2 lead into the 7th inning before breaking the game open.  In the top of the last frame, Colonial Forge plated four runs with three hits and a couple of walks.  Overall, the Eagles pounded out 11 hits.  Lucas Behning, Steven Paugh, Luke Minicucci, and Ben Morgan had two hits each.  Darin Sharpe led the team with two RBIs.

North Stafford 4, Colonial Forge 3

Colonial Forge dropped their second game of the season to the visiting Wolverines. The Eagles collected only seven hits on the day, including three in-field singles. Steven Paugh went 2 for 3 with a double, the Eagles only extra-base hit. Lucas Behning drove in Paugh in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game 3-3. North Stafford went ahead in the top of the 7th inning, scoring 1 run to take the lead. The Eagles had the tying run on base in the bottom of the frame but the rally fell short. Sophomores Ben Morgan and Sean Baldwin pitched a solid game for the Eagles, with Baldwin taking the loss.

Massaponax 1, Colonial Forge 9

The JV Eagles picked up their second win of the season with a 9-1 beating of Massaponax High School. Chase Boster and Josh Orrick combined for a 3-hitter. The duo gave up no walks or earned runs and kept the Panther hitters guessing the entire game. Offensively, the Eagles mustered only seven hits in a lack-luster hitting performance, but took advantage of numerous errors to plate nine runs. Freshman Anthony Malocu had three RBIs from a sacrifice fly and a two-run single. Sophomore Luke Minicucci had two hits.

North Stafford 0, Colonial Forge 2

The JV Eagles picked up their first win of the season and avenged an earlier loss to North Stafford.  The game was a true pitchers’ duel with only seven total hits in the game.  Colonial Forge sophomore Cody Quick battled Wolverine pitcher Jeff Cieslewitz in a game that went scoreless into the sixth inning.  Though the Eagles’ hitters managed only three hits, they managed to plate two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  James Keller began the frame with a single over 2nd base and Kyle Mikula followed with a walk.  After a groundout by Ben Morgan advanced the runners, Stephen Paugh drove in Keller for the game’s first run.  Paugh hit a groundball to the third baseman who threw home in a bang-bang play, with the umpire ruling Keller safe.  After a Sean Baldwin walk, Anthony Malocu drove in Mikula with an RBI groundout.  Staked with a 2-0 lead, Chase Boster relieved Quick in the 7th inning and shut down the Wolverines to earn his first save and the Eagles’ first win.

Colonial Forge 4, North Stafford 6

Colonial Forge began their season with back-to-back losses for the first time this decade after falling to North Stafford 6-4.  The Wolverines scored all six runs in the second inning off starter Sean Baldwin, who took the loss for the Eagles.  After Baldwin was chased from the game, reliever Chase Boster entered the game and shut down North Stafford.  Boster allowed only two hits and zero runs while striking out seven batters over the remaining 4 1/3 innings of the game.  Unfortunately the offense could not mount a comeback against North Stafford starter Stephen Buel, who threw a complete game.  Darin Sharpe and Kyle Mikula combined to go 6 for 8 with 3 doubles and 3 RBIs.  However the rest of the offense managed only 4 hits in 23 at bats and wasted many opportunities to score runs.

Colonial Forge 5, Liberty 10

The Colonial Forge Eagles opened their season with a disappointing loss to Liberty High School in Bealton, Virginia.  Coming off of a sluggish scrimmage performance, the JV Eagles carried their lethargic act into their first game.  Colonial Forge committed nine errors and managed only six hits in a 10-5 loss to the underdogs.  Though the Eagles’ pitchers allowed only one earned run, they gave up nine hits and six walks.  Sean Baldwin started the game and took the loss for the Eagles.  The offense was dominated throughout the game by the Liberty pitcher, not scoring a run until the 5th inning of the contest.  Darin Sharpe had 3 RBIs for the Eagles and freshmen Chase Boster and Stephen Hansen had their first career hits.
