It is one of many stops on a route that goes from Lindenwold into Philadelphia. The Collingswood High boys' basketball team however, doesn't seem to have much "stop" in them at all this season. They're off to a great start. "We just play well together," said coach McLoughlin, after his Panthers captured a 78-68 win in an up tempo contest win versus Lindenwold. "We've been coming together as a team. Offensively, we're there, but we have to pick up our defensive effort. We're getting better each day and after each practice, but defensively, we still have a long way to go." One of the players who has really kicked it into gear for the Panthers this season has been 6'2 sophomore Brandon Whittington. Whittington scored 22 points in the victory against Lindenwold (including 2 on a ferocious breakaway dunk), and 12 points in a tight season opening 43-39 victory over rival Audubon. "Brandon has stepped up his game for us. He's been taking it to the basket strong and is playing like he really wants to be successful. He's fearless, just like the rest of the team," said McLoughlin. Senior guard Kevin Leary has also been a standout for the Panthers. After scoring 30 points against Gloucester, and hitting a 3-point basket at the buzzer to beat West Deptford, Leary has been the leader of the Panther unit. "He (Leary) leads the team in scoring at about 18 points a game, and he has that attitude that's contagious with our younger guys," beamed McLoughlin. "Kevin'sgreat for us." With tough Colonial Conference games against teams like Haddonfield and Sterlingon the horizon, coach McLoughlin is excited about his teams' chances. "We don't fear anyone. We feel that we can step on the court and play with anyone. We have guys like Sterling Wilson, Stuart Slattery, Joey Soto and Nik Jermyn who are hungry and want to score. We're looking forward to every game on the schedule, and can't wait to compete. We have a young team with a great attitude, and I definitely feel that we're just going to get better." |
