Collins Hill Eagles Softball: 2006 Season
The 2006 Collins Hill Varsity Season
    Roster
    2006 JV Season

BulletArrow The 2006 Season could not have been any more exciting with the players that were Freshman
when Coach Cook took over the team, now Seniors. As reigning state champs, every team was out
to beat them. The road to state was a rough one, but they battled through it. Winning their region,
then taking the long road at sectionals (yes, the long road is the loser's bracket), the 2006 Eagles
showed up in Columbus to one of the toughest brackets. They handled each game in nail biting
fashion. They were back at the championship game for the second year. The Eagles placed 2nd in
state this year and the road they took to get there was a lot of fun.   Record: 26 - 10 - 1

Eagles Take Second at State
2006 Varsity.jpg
Eleven years of state championships in Columbus, but the clouds on Friday sent this game to Lovejoy on a spooky night. The Eagles had played the Wolverines in a sectional game over at Twin Creeks and it was a tight ballgame. Tonight, something was different. The wolves hit the ball like the devil. Woodstock jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning off a home run by their catcher with two on. They wouldn't stop there, as they scored a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. The Eagles had their opportunities. In the second, Kara Pollock singled, Caroline Cooper singled, and Lindsay Ellenburg took a hit for the team to get on first. Bases loaded and one out, but then Woodstock struck out the side. The Eagles went quietly, until the the seventh, when Cooper got another single. Ellenburg reached on a fielder's choice, but Cooper was out at second. Katie Fidler singled and Rebecca Roles moved the runners over when she put the ball in play. Now there are two outs. Ellen Black is up next and hits a ball the pticher can't handle. One run in and Angela Clay hits one down the right field line. Two runs in. Libby Munson hits a single. Three runs in. Woodstock was getting worried, but it was too late in the game to rack up the runs.

Just like the regular season, the Eagles were fighting with their backs against the wall. WHAT a season! Most schools never make it to the Championship game, but the Eagles were there two years in a row. Congratulations to all and good luck to you as you move up in your high school career, and scout out your college career. GO EAGLES! We are proud of your hard work!

Triple Wins on Saturday take Eagles to the 'Ship!
cook at columbus
The winning combination.
In game one, at 3 pm, the Collins Hill Eagles beat the Warner Robins Demonettes 2-0 and game two at 7pm saw the Eagles against the Peachtree Ridge Lions 4-3. As a quarter moon sank low in the west behind South Commons Stadium in Columbus, Georgia, the Eagles beat the Mill Creek Hawks 1-0.

After waiting out the all-day rain that soaked Georgia on Friday, Collins Hill came to the park unwilling to let the season end. Libby Munson was on fire, striking out fourteen, count 'em, 14! batters and scattering three hits over seven innnings. Collins Hill also had three hits, but bunched them in the same inning to score their two runs. Kara Pollock started the Eagles off with a stand-up double. Ellen Black came in to run, and Caroline Cooper came up with a push bunt that had the Demonettes wondering "what the heck was that, and who is going to field it? That bunt ended up scoring. Lindsay Ellenburg's sac bunt moved both runners in to scoring position. Rebecca Roles got a good hit to left that resulted in a 2 RBI double, and the Eagles stayed alive in the finals, with a record now 24/9/1.

Game two at 7pm saw a rematch with the Peachtree Ridge Lions. Winner goes on, loser goes home. Both teams scored two runs in the third inning. Kathleen Pulliam started off the inning with a determined and unwavering dash for first, taking ownership of the base on her dropped third strike. Rebecca Roles sac bunted her to second, and Kara Pollock did the same to give her third. Libby Munson then put the ball in play to score Pulliam. Carmen Fowler moved Munson over, and Kara Pollock singled to score her. The score remained at 2 all through the seventh inning. The eighth inning tie breaker had Black on second. Kara Pollock moved her to third on a sac bunt. Caroline Cooper hit an RBI single to score Black. Lindsay Ellenburg then followed with an RBI single to plate Black. Lindsay Ellenburg hit another single, and Katie Fidler reached first on a fielder's choice. With two on and two out, Angela Clay hit an RBI single scoring Ellenburg. The score was 4-2, but the Lions were the home team. They would score once, but not twice. Erin Collins pitched the entire game striking out seven and allowing 5 hits. The Eagles had nine hits. Roles had a sac bunt, Munson scored a run and had and RBI, Ellen Black scored a run, Kara Pollock had two hits and a sac bunt. Caroline Copper had 2 hits and an RBI, Lindsay Ellenburg was three for four scoring a run, Katie Fidler had a hit, Angela Clay an RBI hit, and Kathleen Pulliam scored a run.

The final Saturday game was also a rematch between the Mill Creek Hawks and the Eagles. The Hawks had just been knocked down to the loser's bracket by Woodstock, losing their game in the stadium, while the Eagles played and won theirs on field 8. It was a classic nail-biter; both teams had everything at stake. The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when a Libby Munson single got things started. Ellen Black went in to run, and moved to second on a bad throw. Carmen Fowler moved her to third on a sac bunt, and Kara Pollock walked and stole second. Caroline Cooper hit a ball deep in short scoring Black and that ended up being all the Eagles needed to beat Mill Creek 1-0. The Hawks out-hit the Eagles 5 to 4, but in the end, it's runs that really count. Libby Munson was 1 for 3, Carmen Fowler 1 for 2 and a sac bunt, Kara Pollock 1 for 3, and Angela Clay 1 for 2. Catherine Palmer substituted during one at bat to get a bunt down. Defensively, the Eagles were sharp all night, including an amazing save by Alexa Lewis during a bases loaded/2 outs scenario. Roles dashed for a short right field hit, and almost got it. It hit her glove and came back up for air, but the hit was snagged again by Lewis, who had paralleled the run to back up her team mate. The joy could be seen 200 feet away as the two ran back in together. With plays like this, the Eagles seemed destined to win. Another dazzling moment was the diving catch Fowler made when she took away a Hawk hit in the 2nd out of the 6th inning. Munson pitched a masterpiece, stiking out seven and scattering five hits. ( 3 of which were were slappers.) She kept the batters off balance and in the final out of the evening, fielded the ball to Pollock for the out at first.

All three games were great to watch. Word must have gotten around because a Georgia Tech coach was in the stadium to watch. Earlier in the day, on field 8, it was rumored that Richard Marshall was scouting the percussion ensemble.

Championship game is at Lovejoy on All Hallow's Eve.

Thursday Games Split: Win One, Lose One
Bus to Columbus
Game 1
Eagles squeak by Indians, 1-0
In the first games of the state tournament in Columbus, teams from the north matched up against teams from the south. The first step for the Eagles in defending their title saw Collins Hill against East Coweta. Though the score was tight, there were plenty of Eagle hits to go around. Scoreless going into the 6th, the Eagles notched their lone run with a bases loaded RBI single from Caroline Cooper. The Eagles had 6 hits, including 2 from Cooper, 2 from Libby Munson, and 1 each from Katie Fidler and Carmen Fowler.
The one run was all starting pitcher Munson needed, as she surrendered only one hit to go along with 3 walks and 10 strikeouts in a 7 inning shutout.

Game 2
Mill Creek 6, Collins Hill 1
The Eagles found their way into the loser's bracket of the state tournament courtesy of region rival Mill Creek. The game was a nailbiter through 5, tied 1-1. Junior starter Erin Collins pitched well with 10 strikeouts, scattering 5 hits. As the game moved into the 6th inning, a consecutive string of a walk, hit, and throwing error chased Collins from the game. The Hawks followed up with some timely hits with runners in scoring position to run their total score to 6 runs. Offensively, the Eagles only managed 3 hits in the game: singles from Libby Munson and Caroline Cooper, and an RBI double from Lindsay Ellenburg.

Win Win Win Saturday!!!
winnerscircle1.jpg
The Collins Hill Lady Eagles opened day two of the North Sectional knowing what they had to do. Win every game to make it to State because losing one meant the season's end. Game one was against an old nemesis: North Gwinnett. The Eagles beat them 6 to 1, 3 of which came from Kara Pollock's home run. Game two was also against a Gwinnett County foe, as the Eagles beat the Parkview Panthers 1-0. This game was closer than it should have been with the Eagles loading many runners on base. Plenty of opportunities, but couldn't capitalize. Game three was against the Lassiter Trojans. Lassiter, in the winner's bracket, had just lost to Mill Creek, and were down, to say the least. The game remained scoreless until the sixth and in the end, the Eagles beat them 10-0. The Trojans had opportunities, like in the fourth, when they had the bases loaded with no one out but the Eagle defense turned yet another double play. Angela Clay and Katie Fidler at center and left made diving catches throughout the game, and Clay made all three outs in the fifth. The Eagle offense came on like a freight train in the sixth and seventh inning to do the scoring. In the sixth inning, they batted around. After the first out, Kara Pollock stroked a double to the gap in right center. Ellen Black went in to run, and moved to third on a pass ball. Caroline Cooper walked and Catherine Palmer went in to run for her, stealing second. Katie Fidler laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt up the first base line scoring Black. Lindsay Ellenburg walked, and now bases are loaded with one out. A pop up to first brought the second out. Kathleen Pulliam hit a 2 RBI single scoring Palmer and Fidler. Ellenburg and Pulliam moved up a base on an illegal pitch. Clay walked, and a pass ball allows another run to make the score 4-0. Libby Munson hit a single scoring Pulliam and Clay. In the seventh, the Eagles started scoring with 2 outs. Fidler had a single, Ellenburg a single, Roles a single, and Pulliam walked. Clay hit a triple clearing the bases to bring the score to 10-0.
Clay was 2 for 5, 3 RBIs, Munson had a single, Fowler was 2 for 4, Kara Pollock had a good sac bunt and a double, Fidler had two hits. Ellenburg a single, Roles was 2 for 4, Pulliam a single and 2 RBIs. Erin Collins pitched five innings and Munson two Between them, there were just 3 hits.

Congratulations Coach Cook, Coach Parker, Coach Dooley and Emily! Congratulations, Caroline, Rebecca, Alexa, Erin, Katie, Angela, Ellen, Kim, Libby, Kara, Suzannah, Amanda, Lindsay, Kellie, Catherine, Carmen, Leah and Kathleen!! On to STATE!

GO EAGLES!!!!
The Collins Hill Eagles opened sectional play with a win over Milton Friday afternoon, but ended the evening with a loss to Woodstock 3-2. Woodstock jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Collins Hill came right back at them in the top of the second, scoring a run when Caroline Cooper singled, Ellen Black went in to run, and Lindsay Ellenburg moved her to second on a sac bunt. Next up Katie Fidler singled and with runners on the corners, Fidler's steal attempt brought a throw-down, allowing Black to sprint for home. In the third, Kathleen Pulliam belted a double, Angela Clay moved her to third on a sac bunt, and again Black went in to run. Always ready for any opportunity, Black scored on a wild pitch. The score remained two all and the game went to tie breaker with Fidler on second.
The highlight defensive play of the evening came when a single to center was fielded with confidence and accuracy by Angela Clay. That Woodstock runner from second kept going and Clay's throw home nailed her at the plate. To ice it, Cooper's heads up throw to Carmen Fowler started a pickle: Fowler to Pulliam to Rebecca Roles and back to to Fowler, who tagged the runner out at third for the double play.
Erin Collins pitched seven innings striking out seven and scattering four hits. Libby Munson, who also had a single in the game, pitched the 8th.

Lions Eliminate Eagles From Region Tourney
In the rescheduled region tournament game between the Peachtree Ridge Lions and Collins Hill Eagles, the Lions' bats proved too much for the Eagles, as the Eagles lost by a score of 3-1. Lion hits came in each of the 7 innings, with the big blows coming late. Tied 1-1 going into the final inning, the Lions scored 2 to put it away. The Eagles jumped out to a first inning lead after a single by Libby Munson followed by a Carmen Fowler double scored a run. But with runners in scoring position in each of the final 3 innings, the Eagles couldn't push across more runs. Angela Clay had two hits for the night, and other Eagle hits came from Rebecca Roles, Caroline Cooper, Katie Fidler, and Lindsay Ellenburg.Libby Munson went the distance for the Eagles.
Next stop for the Eagles is Sectionals at Twin Creeks in Woodstock next Friday at 4:00 PM.

Angela Clay had a single in the third and Catherine Palmer singled in the fifth. The Hawks scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and 1 in the sixth. Libby Munson pitched six innings, striking out six. Erin Collins pitched the seventh inning, striking out two. The Eagles play the winner of the Peachtree Ridge/North Gwinnett game. Caroline Cooper at bat against Parkview
The Collins Hill Eagles opened the tournament game in fine fashion, winning a close one over the Parkview Panthers 1-0. The Panthers had just lost the first of their double-header to Eastside, but they gave the Eagles a run for the money. It was the fourth inning when Collins Hill scored the lone run of the game. Carmen Fowler led off with a walk, and Kara Pollock and Caroline Cooper both put the ball in play on fielders' choices but the Panthers threw out the lead runners. With Ellen Black in to run for Cooper, Katie Fidler and Catherine Palmer both singled. It looked like bases loaded, but the catcher bobbled the ball on a throw from the outfield, and Black bolted for home and scored. The Eagles had 7 hits. Carmen Fowler was 3 for 4, Catherine Palmer was 2 for 3, Angela Clay went 2 for 3, Caroline Cooper was 1 for 3, and Kellie Edmondson was 1 for 4. Eagles Come Up Short in Pool Play (0W, 2L, 1T)
Angela sac bunt dacula
Angela Clay gets the sac bunt
In three pool play games of the Hawk/Bulldog Tournament, the Collins Hill Lady Eagles managed just 1 run of offense over the 18 innings of play. Pitching was solid as the three starters gave up 0 earned runs, but untimely errors following key hits led to the two defeats.

Wednesday in Game 1, junior pitcher Erin Collins scattered 3 hits and 1 walk over 6 innings. Steady pitching and oustanding Eagle defense held the Dacula Lady Falcons scoreless. Key defensive plays included a diving stop by left fielder Alexa Lewis and a fly to right fielder Libby Munson with a throw home to cut down a runner at the plate. Caroline Cooper and Kara Pollock were the only Eagles with hits. Final score was a 0-0 tie as time expired.

Game 2 on Friday saw Kara Pollock in the circle for the Eagles, also with a fine outing. Kara allowed just 2 hits and 1 walk over 6 innings. The two Milton hits came in the the 5th inning. A thrown down to third failed, handing the Milton Eagles 2 gift runs and Collins Hill a 2-1 defeat. Hits from Libby Munson and Suzy Kutney were all the offense Collins Hill could muster. With good speed and a hard slide at the plate, pinch runner Caroline Cooper scored the only run for Collins Hill.

In the final game, the Lady Eagles showed a bit more offense and had runners in scoring position in the 1st and 5th innings, but couldn't push any across the plate. Senior Libby Munson held Sequoyah scoreless going into the 5th inning, but a couple of hits and a walk set the table for Sequoyah with bases loaded and 1 out. A comebacker to the circle allowed Libby to force the 2nd out at home, but consecutive errors in the field gave Sequoyah their 3 runs as they defeated the Eagles 3-0. Libby pitched well, allowing only 3 hits and 2 walks over the 6 innings. She struck-out 4. Kara Pollock was 2 for 3; other Eagles with hits included LIbby Munson, Angela Clay, and Ellen Black.

Mill Creek Wins it 1-0
The Collins Hill Eagles lost a tough one at home to Mill Creek 1-0. It was a pitcher's duel with Katy Hackett striking out eleven and allowing just 2 hits. Libby Munson took the loss for the Eagles, striking out seven and allowing 6 hits... some of them infield bloopers. The game was scoreless until the fifth inning with two outs when Mill Creek put together a couple of hits and sqeaked a runner across the plate. Eagle hits came from Kara Pollock and Kathleen Pulliam, both singles. Ellen Black put the ball in play and Carmen Fowler took a walk. A Mill Creek baserunner got herself into a pickle when she tried to stretch a double to a triple. Pulliam and Fowler kept her undecided about which way to go, with Fowler finally running her down and putting her back on the bench.
