Softball Pitcher of the Year - Kayla Floor

 Collins Hill’s Floor thrives
 as pressure mounts

 Reporter: By David Friedlander

Kayla Floor has been in tight situations
several times in her softball career before
this fall. But she had never faced the kind
of pressure she faced with no margin for
error for her or her Collins Hill teammates
on championship Saturday of this year’s
Class AAAAA state tournament.

Collins Hill’s Kayla Floor won 20 games and allowed just
four earned runs over 144-plus innings, leading the Eagles
to the Class AAAAA state title to earn Pitcher of the Year.

However, Floor came up big when her team needed her the most, earning her two biggest wins
of the seasons as the Eagles won three times that day to claim the state championship.

It was the most shining moment in a season full of them for the sophomore right-hander, who is the
Daily Post’s 2009 Pitcher of the Year.
Just how dominant was she? Consider that she gave up just three earned runs in 312⁄3 innings during
the state tournament, and her season earned run average actually went up.
After giving up just one earned run in her first 113 innings, Floor still posted outstanding numbers, going
20-2 with a 0.19 ERA — the fourth lowest in Gwinnett history — with 157 strikeouts in 1442⁄3 innings.
Those numbers also included 18 complete games and 14 shutouts, including one no-hitter.
“She did exactly what she needed to do,” Eagles coach Billy Dooley, the Daily Post Coach of the Year, said.
“She was ready for it since Day 1. ... Mentally, she’s as tough as they come.”
Floor certainly looked ready for her most pressure-packed performances of the season, a pair of complete-game
victories that sandwiched another win by Kacey Hawkshead — all before big crowds at the South Commons
Softball Complex’s 2,500-seat stadium — to help the Eagles fight off elimination and eventually win the title.
Floor is glad Dooley thought she was ready for the pressure she faced on championship Saturday, because
she freely admits she wasn’t quite as sure.
“It was very nerve-racking,” Floor said. “I’d never faced any pressure like being in that stadium on Saturday.
I was very excited, but very nervous. “It was completely different from (summer) travel ball. It’s a lot more intense,
but I’m used to it now.” Floor also had some other help in dealing with the pressure cooker that is coming out of
the elimination bracket of the state tournament.
Having a pitching companion like Hawkshead, a senior and first-team all-county selection who had a stellar
season herself, gave Floor much needed time to catch her breath — both mentally and physically — during the
season and the state tournament. It is something she has been used to, having played on the Atlanta Vipers
summer travel team with another all-county pitcher — Grayson freshman Kanani Cabrales. With Hawkshead
graduating in the spring, Floor knows she may have to take more of the pitching burden next season. However,
she adds that after this season, she believes she will be ready for such responsibility.
“I’m prepared to be pitching a numerous amount of game next year,” Floor said. “About two summers ago, a lot of
the other pitchers on my travel team got hurt, and there was one tournament in which I had to pitch the whole time.

Softball:
Collins Hill was perhaps the biggest surprise at the state tournament,
rising from the loser's bracket to win the Class AAAAA championship.
The tireless Eagles closed with three straight wins on last Saturday.
"Coming through the loser's bracket made the day even more special, but just sitting back
and watching the girls celebrate after the final out was something I can never describe,"
Collins Hill coach Billy Dooley said.

Outfielder Aerika Miles drew a walk to lead off the sixth inning, and later scored the
game-tying run against Houston County. Miles also robbed a homer with a leaping grab
at the fence in the seventh.

Collins Hill's other top performers during the tournament were Christina Parham (.315 batting
average), Brianna Cason (stellar defense), Randi Rea (scored six runs, 4 RBIs), Sammy Lenahan
(bases-loaded triple in championship), Chelsea Littlejohn (game-winning RBI vs. Kell), and
Brittany Roley (speed on bases).

Gwinnett County Softball Teams add to State Legacies

10/27/2009 12:01:00 AM
By David Friedlander, Staff Writer

COLUMBUS - Gwinnett County's four representatives at the state softball tournament -
Buford, Collins Hill, Grayson and Providence Christian - all had plenty of history with the
sport's annual showcase event. And all added to it in this year's tournament at the South
Commons Softball Complex.

But with state titles in their respective classifications, Buford and Collins Hill each made
another lasting mark in what is becoming a championship legacy for both programs.

toward the championship trophy after beating Houston County on Saturday in Columbus.
COLUMBUS - Throughout much of a warm
weekend at the Class AAAAAA state tournament,
Collins Hill's bats were remarkably cold. But with
the weather turning cooler Saturday, those bats
heated up when they needed them the most.

After erupting for wins of 8-1 and 14-1 over
Chapel Hill and Houston County, the Eagles earned
a one-game, winner-take-all rematch with Houston
for the state title.

And Sammy Lenahan's bases-clearing triple
ignited a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth
as Collins Hill claimed its second state title - and
first since 2005 - with a 4-1 victory at the South
Commons Softball Complex. "We've played close
games with our pitchers keeping us in it, and our
offense seems to find a way," Eagles coach
Billy Dooley said. "That's how it's been all day.
We didn't score but five runs in the first four games.
... (Saturday), our hitters were awesome."
Not that the pitching wasn't also outstanding. Sophomore Kayla Floor (20-2) threw two complete-game victories, giving up just
seven hits and one earned run and striking out 11 in 14 innings of work. Senior Kacey Hawkshead (15-2) gave up just three hits
and an earned run with two strikeouts in four innings in the first win over Houston County.

However, the Eagles' bats were definitely the story Saturday.

First, they erupted for eight runs against Chapel Hill two hits each from Brianna Cason and Mckenzie Halstead, plus
a two-run triple from Lenahan. Then, they pounded out 14 more runs in the first Houston County game, led by a 2-for-4,
four-RBI performance from Chelsea Littlejohn, two more hits and three runs from Christian Parham and two more hits and
an RBI from Brittany Roley.

But it looked like pitching had regained control after Floor and Houston County's Jessica Burroughs battled each other for
five shutout innings. Finally, Burroughs helped herself in the top of the sixth with an RBI single to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

However, with the bases loaded and only one out, Floor fought back to record the next two outs to keep the deficit at just
a single run. She then delivered a challenge to her teammates. "I tried my best to hold (Houston County) right there,"
Floor said. "I told (the team), 'You need to get your hits, and I'll take care of the rest.'"

Lenahan held up her end of the bargain after Aerika Miles drew a leadoff walk, Parham slapped an infield single and
Randi Rea drew another walk one out later to load the bases. The senior catcher fell behind in the count, but got a pitch
on the outside corner and ripped it into the right-field corner, clearing the bases and vaulting Collins Hill in front 3-1.

"I've played in high-pressure games like this before," Lenahan said. "I just tried to keep all the outside things out of
my head and just focus on the ball."

A passed ball helped the Eagles pad their lead at 4-1, and Floor fulfilled her pledge to her teammates by setting down
Houston County in order in the top of the seventh to seal the victory, and the title.

Eagles eke out 1-0 wins

COLUMBUS - State softball tournament games are supposed to be tense, as are one-run games. Combine the two and multiply
it by two and it gives a good idea of the kind of pressure cooker Collins Hill dealt with in the Class AAAAA tournament Friday.

However, the Eagles didn't let the pressure get to them. Outstanding pitching from Kayla Floor and Kacey Hawkshead and just
enough offense got them a pair of 1-0 victories over Kell and East Coweta at the South Commons Softball Complex.
With the wins, Collins Hill (32-4) returns to the championship final today for the first time since 2006. But it won't be an easy road
to the title. The Eagles will have to beat Chapel Hill in a 10 a.m. elimination game, then score two straight victories over Houston
County if they want to claim their first state crown since 2005. Read more...

Eagles hold Milton to 1 hit in Round-1 sweep

2009VStatePitchers
Kacey Hawkshead and Kayla Floor - State Round 1 Pitchers
GwinnettDailyPost
SUWANEE - Mckenzie Halstead drove in seven runs in
the Region 7-AAAAA finals. One RBI was enough for the
Collins Hill faithful Tuesday night.

The sophomore's walk-off hit gave the Eagles a 1-0 victory
over Milton in a tense Game 1, then Class AAAAA's
top-ranked team erupted a 9-0 victory in Game 2 for a
sweep of the first-round playoff series.

Collins Hill (27-3) advances to host Dacula in Friday's
second round, with the winner heading to the state finals
in Columbus.

"Halstead's come up big in big situations the last couple
of weeks," Collins Hill head coach Billy Dooley said.
"She's doing a really good job for us."
One run in Game 1 was plenty for Kayla Floor (14-1), who pitched a seven-inning one-hitter. The sophomore struck out 11 batters
and didn't have a walk, allowing only a two-out single in the third inning to Milton's No. 9 batter, Dayna Hargrove. Hargrove's
hit ended up being Milton's only one of the day.

Collins Hill's Kacey Hawkshead (13-2) followed up Floor's effort with a five-inning no-hitter. The senior struck out eight batters
and walked two, pitching out of jams in the second and fourth innings. "They've done a great job," Dooley said of Floor
and Hawkshead. "It's a luxury we enjoy having, two pitchers like that. They're two completely different pitchers, but they
both know how to get it done."

Collins Hill had runners on base throughout Game 1, but couldn't break through with a big hit, until the bottom of the seventh when
Aerika Miles singled to start the rally. Christina Parham followed with a bunt single, then the runners moved over on the second
of two sacrifice bunts by Brianna Cason. Milton pitched around slugger Sammy Lenahan to load the bases, but Halstead made
the visitors pay with a drive over the right fielder's head. "It's definitely nerve-racking at this time of the year," Dooley said.
"Kayla was pitching great, but you never know. A bloop hit, an error, a walk. Those can come back to hurt you in a hurry."

Game 2 looked like more of the same for Collins Hill, which stranded 12 runners and hit into three double plays in
the first nine innings Tuesday. But Milton's struggles (six errors, seven walks) turned Game 2 into a laugher. The
hosts scored six runs in the third inning - the big blow was a two-run double by Chelsea Littlejohn - and three more
in the fifth. Littlejohn was 3-for-6, Randi Rea was 3-for-6 with a double and Parham was 3-for-7 in the doubleheader.
Paige Sneed (one hit, three walks) and Brittany Roley each reached base four times in five plate appearances.
Ashleigh Simmons and Shelley Sweat added RBIs for the Eagles.

Eagles roll to 7-AAAAA Championship

GwinnettDailyPost
SUWANEE - Despite its success on the state level over the last five years, it has been that long since Collins Hill
last won a Region 7-AAAAA softball championship. That changed Thursday night as the No. 1 state-ranked Eagles
used their depth and versatility in the region tournament championship game against Peachtree Ridge.
2009VRegionWin
Kacey Hawkshead threw a two-hit shutout and Mckenzie Halstead went 3-for-4 and drove in seven runs as
Collins Hill scored seven runs in its last two at-bats to break open a close game and roll to an 8-0 win over the
Lions to claim its first region title since 2004. "We've got some injuries," Collins Hill coach Billy Dooley said.
"Right before the game, I had to go flipping the line-up around. (Catcher) Sammy (Lenahan) has been hitting in
the four hole all year, we moved her up to three and put Halstead (at No. 4). She's quietly had a great season."

There was nothing quiet about Halstead's bat Thursday as she delivered six of her RBIs on a pair of bases-loaded
doubles - one in the fifth that helped the Eagles (25-3) break open a 1-0 game and the other in the sixth, which ended
the game on the run-rule. Both came after Lenahan was walked in front of her to load the bases - once intentionally.
"She wasn't happy about that," Halstead said about Lenahan, who was walked four times in front of the sophomore by
Peachtree Ridge (18-11) on the evening. "When a situation like that comes up, I seem to do better. I don't know why."

Halstead also made the Lions pay for walking Lenahan to load the bases in the
bottom of the third of what was a scoreless game. Her contact wasn't as solid as
the next two times, but her dribbler down the first base line was placed well enough
to allow Aerika Miles to beat the throw to the plate to put Collins Hill up 1-0.

As it turned out, that run was all Hawkshead (12-2) needed.

The senior right-hander gave up just two hits - both to Peachtree Ridge leadoff hitter Sam
Pierannunzi - and struck out seven in six innings of work, and set down 13 of the last 14
batters she faced.

Collins Hill will now face Region 6-AAAAA's No. 4 seed Milton in a best-of-three series
in the first round of the state playoffs beginning Tuesday.

Sammy Lenahan went 2-for-2 with a two run home run, triple and scored three runs, while
Chelsea Littlejohn finished the night 2-for-2 with two runs. Christina Parham was 2-for-3 with an RBI

SUWANEE - Brianna Cason singled in Christina Parham in the bottom of the sixth inning to give
Collins Hill a 1-0 win over Duluth and set up a matchup between the Eagles and Peachtree Ridge
in the 7-AAAAA playoffs on Monday. Parham lead the inning with a triple to set the stage for the run.

The Eagles (23-3) needed the single run after a complete game nine strike out performance by
Kayla Floor (12-1) that was aided by Chelsea Littlejohn's outfield assist. In the first inning, Littlejohn

Eagles Win Again in Regionals

Collins Hill 2, Peachtree Ridge 1
Top-seeded Collins Hill (24-3) turned an amazing 4 double plays and put together just enough offense to beat
Peachtree Ridge and earn a day off today. "That was phenomenal," Eagles head coach Billy Dooley said.

2009VDblPlay1 "Because we put ourselves in some tough situations. We
made four errors and then we turned four great double plays.
So that kind of balances them out. "They kept their heads
and did what they had to to win the ballgame."

Both teams had already qualified for the state sectionals, but
starting pitcher Kayla Floor wasn't treating this game like a
throw-away. With the help of her defense, Floor faced the
minimum number of batters until the Lions made things
interesting in the seventh.

A Collins Hill fielding error and a passed ball allowed Sade
Johnson to get to third. Gabby Bedard's RBI ground-out
scored Johnson to make it a one-run game. A single ripped up
the third-base line by Chandler Frisbie kept Peachtree Ridge's
hopes alive and Floor had a chance to end it, but bobbled a
pop-up. She came right back, though, and got a strikeout
to end the game.

"She was juiced and it was a big game for her," Dooley said.
"She was excited and she had every right to be. She pitched
a great game and the defense bailed themselves out."

Floor (13-1) allowed just two hits and struck out seven in
the win.

Samantha Lenahan (2-for-3) was the catalyst for both Collins Hill
runs and Shelley Sweatt had the game's biggest at-bat in the
third with the Eagles up 1-0.
2009VDblPlay2
Christina Parham and Brianna Cason with a double play
Sweatt persevered at the plate to rip a single to center field and score Lenahan's pinch runner, Janae Horton. It ended up as the
winning run. "She fouled a couple off and she did exactly what we've worked on," Dooley said. "She stayed back and
went with the pitch and I'm so proud of her for that."

Tough loss for the Eagles

Collins Hill 1, Mill Creek 3
HOSCHTON - Having gotten off to a slow start overall and in Region 7-AAAAA so far this season, Mill Creek was
in need of a clutch performance or two heading into its game against Collins Hill. That's exactly what the Hawks got
in coming up with their biggest win of the season to date - a 3-1 win Thursday at Mill Creek. he Hawks fell behind in
the fourth when a miscue on Sammy Lenahan's grounder, and a two-out RBI single by Mckenzie Halstead gave
Collins Hill (12-2, 2-1) a 1-0 lead. Mill Creek answered in its half of the inning by taking advantage of two crucial
errors, plus Hawk Sagermann's RBI single and a double steal to vault in front 2-1. Paige Sneed led off the
Collins Hill seventh with a single, Sagermann made a quick decision to get the force at second on Brittany Roley's
tapper to the left of the circle to help keep the Eagles from mounting a last rally. Those plays and other routine
plays were what Eagles coach Billy Dooley believed were the difference in what was otherwise a pitcher's duel
between Wilson and Kayla Floor (7-1), who gave up just three hits and one earned run and struck out three
in six innings.
"We haven't scored a ton of runs this year," Dooley said. "The main thing we've talked about is that we have to take
what's given to us and not give away things. "The difference in the game was Mill Creek took advantage of what was
given and we didn't. And I thought Caroline did a very good job (for the Hawks)."  Bennett went 2-for-2 for Mill Creek,
while Paige Sneed led Collins Hill with two hits.
