Reed Buck got the win after pitching five innings and giving up three hits and three earned runs, Morgan Ownbey came in and pitched an inning and struck out three batters, while Andy Mathis finished things up by pitching the seventh inning for the Eagles. Offensively for Collins Hill, Cameron Starling went 2-for-3 with two doubles, while Trever Cortes was 1-for-2 and Grant Earls finished 2-for-4 on the day for Collins Hill (15-7, 10-4)
South Forsyth 13, Collins Hill 3 CUMMING - Alex Sokolowski and Cameron Starling each hit home runs, but it wasn't enough in Monday's 13-3 loss to South Forysth. Spencer Horridge went 1-for-2 for the Eagles (14-7, 9-4), while Sokolowski was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Starling was 2-for-3.
Collins Hill 6, North 0

Collins Hill 6, Chattahoochee 4 SUWANEE - Morgan Owenbey went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run to help the Eagles take a 6-4 win over Chattahoochee on Thursday. Eagles Soar Over Duluth 8-1
Reed Buck threw 61⁄3 innings and gave up a walk, three hits and struck out six batters to help Collins Hill beat Duluth 8-1 on Wednesday.
Collins Hill gets much-needed Region 7 victory SUWANEE - After dropping its last two Region 7-AAAAA games, Collins Hill picked up what could later prove to be a huge region win as the Eagles soared past Norcross 17-6 in five innings on Friday afternoon. Collins Hill entered Friday's game tied for second in the region at 5-3 with Mill Creek and North Gwinnett behind current front runner South Forsyth. With Friday's win, Collins Hill ensured itself of being in no lower than second place with nine more region games to play. "I thought it was big win for us," Collins Hill head coach Paul Pierce said. "To finish the first half of our region schedule at 6-3 is a big thing for us in the grand scheme of things." The Eagles (11-6) scored at least one run in every inning and took control in the first by putting five runs on the board off starter Tyler Roach. Roach surrendered just one hit in the first, a two-run homer by Alex Sokolowski, but had a hard time finding the plate as he walked six in the inning, allowing Collins Hill to take a 5-0 lead. After Collins Hill added another run in the second, Norcross (7-12, 3-6) roared back with five runs in the top of the third off starter James Buckelew. Buckelew, who battled control problems of his own (five walks in five innings), nearly got out of the jam in the third, but Brian Leach cleared the bases with a three-run double to help cut the score to 6-5. "It was good that we battled back to make it 6-5," Norcross head coach Andy Collins said. "We just had too many walks." With Norcross back in the game, Buckelew helped himself out in the bottom of the third when he ripped a three-run double of his own, helping the Eagles charge back out in front 10-5. Norcross couldn't mount any serious threat after that and Collins Hill put the game away in the fifth inning with six runs, the final three of those coming on a three-run homer to left from Morgan Ownbey. "Both sides' pitchers had trouble finding the zone tonight," Pierce said. "It was a back and forth affair for awhile and in this region, you feel like you can never have enough runs. We had a couple of breaks go our way and were fortunate to capitalize on them." Buckelew also struggled with his control, especially in the first inning when he loaded the bases with three walks. However, he bared down to strike out the side to get out of the mess. He finished the game with five walks, eight strikeouts, six runs on six hits to improve his record to 3-1. Leach led Norcross with two hits and three RBIs while Danal Slay finished with a single and two runs.
Northview 3, Collins Hill 1 DULUTH - Trevor Cortesi drove in Collins Hill's lone run in the Eagles' 3-1 loss to Northview on Tuesday. Cortesi was 1-for-3 and James Buckelew was 1-for-2. Reed Buck was the losing pitcher, going 61⁄3 innings and allowing no earned runs for the Eagles (10-5, 5-2).
Ownbey leads Eagles to key win
Morgan Ownbey had a big day at the plate and on the mound as Collins Hill stayed within a half-game of the Region 7-AAAAA lead with a 5-3 win over North Forsyth at home Monday.
Collins Hill 7, North 6 SUWANEE - Collins Hill edged out North Gwinnett 7-6 in a Region 7-AAAAA showdown Saturday. Four pitchers helped secure the win, including sophomore Trey Marksberry. He allowed one walk, two hits, two runs and struck out one in 22⁄3 innings. Reed Buck was the starter and gave up just one hit and no runs in two innings of work. R.C. Jones got the win in relief with one walk and two strikeouts and no runs in 11⁄3 innings. After Marksberry, Morgan Ownbey came in and got the save. At the plate, the Eagles were led by Garitt Church's 2-for-3 effort that included an RBI. Grant Earls, Chris McGowen and Cameron Starling were all 2-for-4 with an RBI. Michael Adams was 1-for-1 with three walks as Collins Hill improved to 9-4 and 4-1 in the region.
Eagles Beat Duluth 5-2 The night started off soggy with rain in the first inning, but the weather settled down. There were no damp spirits in the Eagles dugout, however with ten hits – two of them homers. Chris McGowan scored in the first off a Grant Earls single – and we stayed at 1-0 until the fourth when Duluth scratched out a run. Tied 1-1 going into the 5th, Cameron Starling lead off with line drive that rattled around in the right field corner – leaving him standing on third. Morgan Ownbey doubled Starling in, but then got caught in no-man’s land between second and third. The Eagles put the nail in coffin in the seventh, with a lead-off home run by Starling followed up by a double by Michael Adams and a two-run homer by Alex Sokolowski – his first of his high school career. All told, Adams, McGowan, Starling and Ownbey each had two hits. Sokolowski and Earls each had a hit. Sokolowski was also the starting pitcher – going 4 1/3 innings, striking out three in the process. Andy Mathis came in and finished the fifth inning with two strikeouts. Ownbey pitched the sixth, giving up one run, but striking out two. Starling closed the game with some infield help – a Sokolowski-Ownbey-Earls double play and comebacker-Earls grounder to end the game.
Eagles Lose to South Forsyth 3-7 Monday night’s game was a mixture of highs and lows. It started with a bang as Michael Adams smashed a lead-off home run in the first inning. Through the evening, the ball was traveling well with a total of four batters going yard – Adams and Chris McGowan each with solo shots and two War Eagles providing counterpoint. Unfortunately our combined seven hits were not enough to get past South Forsyth’s eight hits – they simply got theirs with runners on base to score the runs. Grant Earls pitched 4 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts. Andy Mathis followed up with 1 2/3 innings with three strikeouts. Reed Buck closed the game with a ground out, one K and a pop foul ball that Earls sucked in. Adams and McGowan each had two hits on the night and Earls, James Buckelew and Garitt Church each had one hit.
Eagles Win First Region Game in 10 Innings In the first region game of 2009, the Eagles were victorious over the Chattahoochee Cougars 7-6 in a marathon 10 inning game. The win improved the Eagles overall record to 6-3 and is a testament to the entire squad’s grit and determination – and a sign of good things to come. Last year’s team saw several one run games fall the other way; battling through this win shows the heart and maturity of the team. Every position in the line-up contributed to the win. The Eagles scored their seven runs on 11 hits – including three by Morgan Ownbey, two by Michael Adams, and one hit each by Alex Sokolowski, Grant Earls, James Buckelew, Cameron Starling, Garitt Church and Stephen Johnson. In a game where every run could be considered the winning run, Trevor Cortesi offered a sacrifice fly in the first to score Earls. The game ending run came in the bottom of then tenth. With two out Starling smashed a double off the right field wall that had everyone holding their breath. Then Church was intentionally walked. Johnson then walked – but provided the nights controversy when his check-swing was considered a strike by many Cougar fans. Seems the only people that mattered – the umpires – thought otherwise. With two outs, bases loaded, a 1-2 count and tension high, Ownbey chopped one off home plate that bounced high enough down the third base line for the runner at third to score and for him to safely reach first. Game over. Eagles win. Defensively, the Eagles played well. Sokolowski started the game on the mound and struck out five batters in four innings. Our only real troublesome inning was in the fifth when Chattahoochee’s number three hitter, Cody Maas hit a two run homer off of Andy Mathis, who followed up by striking out the clean-up hitter. Johnson came in to finish off the inning by throwing a ground ball to second. After the fifth, the Cougars were able to record only three hits. In the sixth, Starling sat the batters down in order with 2 Ks and a fly ball to Buckelew in right. Ownbey then pitched the remaining four innings, recording five strikeouts. Notable plays during overtime included a high foul ball just off the net, which Alex Pribus plucked out of the air as it tried to fade over his head. The only tension was in the top of the tenth when, with bases loaded and two out, Ownbey threw several foul balls indicating the Cougar batter was catching up to his hot fastball. Ownbey knuckled down and found some reserves and blew the last strike into Pribus’ mitt. If the weather holds, the Eagles travel to Duluth on Wednesday, March 25. The drive’s not far so come out and enjoy some great Eagles baseball!

Eagles Pound Parkview 11-1, Enter Region Play at 5-3 The bats were talking Thursday night as the Eagles racked up 17 hits in a 11-1 pounding of the Parkview Panthers. Offensive highlights included Cameron Starling with four hits on the night, Michael Adams and James Buckelew each with three hits and Chris McGowan and Grant Earls with two hits. On the defensive side, Buckelew pitched 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and allowed only three hits. Reed Buck finished the next two batters to close the fifth. Morgan Ownbey threw a 6-3 grounder and K’d 2 batters to shut the 6th down. Starling closed the game with a great 6-4-3 double play. Another defensive highlight included a log fly ball to Michael Adams in center, who then shot the ball to Garitt Church as the runner foolishly attempted to take third. This was the last game before region play begins on Monday, March 23. With our bats coming alive and our pitching looking solid, Chattahoochee is in danger of beginning its region play on a down note.

Sokolowski, Cortesi lead Eagles to win -- Collins Hill beats defending state champion Brookwood 4-2
By Scott Smith
SUWANEE - After last weekend's wintry mess, this weekend got off to a very springlike start with both warm temperatures and a little baseball.
Collins Hill 4, Heritage 3 SUWANEE - Chris McGowan was 2-for-2 with a home run and an RBI as the Eagles took a 4-3 win over Heritage on Thursday. Grant Earls went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Andy Mathis picked up the win after pitching only one inning. Cameron Starling pitched the seventh inning and struck out two batters to get the save for Collins Hill. James Buckelew threw four innings and gave up an earned run, three hits and struck out three for the Eagles. Thursday, March 5 Varsity Eagles Win Season Opener
After waiting for almost a week to begin the season, the Collins Hill Eagles finally began the season by beating the Heritage Patriots 4-3. Even after the delay, the Eagles bided their time ‘til the sixth inning to string together four hits and a timely bunt to score three runs, clinching the win. The early innings were marked by a quality start by James Buckelew, who threw four innings, struck three batters out and gave up only two hits. One of those hits, unfortunately, was a solo homer in the third. Other early inning highlights included the Eagles’ first homer – a solo shot by Chris McGowan. Garitt Church looked in mid-season form at third base, stabbing a hard line drive and grounder after grounder to keep the Patriots at bay. After the fourth inning, coach Paul Pierce called upon a deep pitching rotation to platoon the remaining innings with Stephen Johnson in the fifth, Andy Mathis in the sixth and Cameron Starling closing the seventh. Johnson worked his way through the heart of the Patriots order, allowing two runs but stopping their rally by trusting his defense. Mathis and Cameron collectively held the Patriots scoreless. Congratulations to the Eagles! Friday night’s battle on the Hill is against a perennially strong Brookwood Broncos.
