Bob Jett Scholarship for Seniors

It's that time of year again.  There are quite a few scholarships available to seniors and we want to tell you about the one sponsored by the Cafeteria.  It is $1,000, available to any senior; information about the scholarship is available on the CHHS website, Guidance link, Senior Info.  Link or they can just stop by the Guidance Office.

The Bob Jett Scholarship is named in memory of a former Cafeteria employee who touched the lives of everyone he met.  His compassion, sense of humor, sense of duty and honor in all that he did is definitely the qualities we are looking for in the recipient of this scholarship.

And now, the best part!  To fund this, each year our staff donates their time and funds to make this happen.  We have 6 baskets that are filled up with goodies that will go for auction next week.  Don't go buy for Easter yet for your kids or grandkids, we have it for you.  Auction will start in the Cafeteria on Monday during all lunches and will conclude on Friday at 1:00.  You can take the basket(s) home with you that day.  The baskets we have are listed below:

Girls Hannah Montana/High School Musical & Camp Rock Basket - so much you will think you ARE Hannah Montana!

Boys CARS Basket - everything from the movie, CARS, including a "make your own race car" kit.

Fun Kit - full of spring/summer fun for kids.

Chocolate & Coffee Cache - $20 Starbucks giftcard and everything for a chocolate fix!

Gardening Galore - spend your spring break in the garden - everything you need to make it beautiful.

A Manly Bucket - if you love Home Depot, this is for you - giftcards to Home Depot, Carnett's, 5 Guys and much more!

Come on down and see what we have and show your support for our Seniors!

Baseball Scholarships 101

Undoubtedly one of the most confusing parts of the college recruiting process is the distribution of athletic scholarships.  It varies from division to division, conference to conference and even school to school, leaving players and parents wondering what their chances are of receiving awards and assistance.  Each athletic division is allotted a predetermined number of athletic scholarships to distribute how they see fit.  The maximum amount of scholarships awarded to each level of school is as follows:

NCAA Division I: 11.7

NCAA Division II: 9.0

Junior College: DI and DII: 24 DIII: 0

NCAA Division III: 0

NAIA: 12

It is a common misconception that each division is awarded the above number of scholarships PER YEAR to spend on the incoming class. In fact, this is the number of scholarships that is allocated for the entire team at any given time. For example, Division I colleges are allowed to have 11.7 total scholarships on their roster.  These numbers represent the maximum amount that each level has to distribute. Each baseball program is different depending on the level of university support. Typically the top conferences in the country are fully funded. Other conferences limit the number of scholarships each program has so that there is parity among the schools. Some Division I schools, like those in the Ivy or Patriot Leagues, do not offer athletic scholarships at all.  Although Division III schools do not offer athletic scholarships there is still hope for those who are looking for ways to defer the costs of tuition. Coaches at these schools can provide assistance with state and university grants as well as financial aid awards.  There is no equation for scholarship distribution but there are several rules that coaches tend to follow.  Generally 65%-80% of a program's total athletic money is handed out to players in the middle of the field.  Pitchers get the most scholarships, followed by middle infielders, catchers and centerfielders who can run.  Creativity allows coaches to make the most of their allotted scholarships.  Coaches eager to get the most out of their funds will combine financial aid, academic money, grants and athletic money into a "package."

For example:

Baseball University Costs $14,000

Player X Gets a $12,000 package

Athletic Money = $2,000 (14.3% scholarship)

Academic Money = $3,500

State Grant = $2,000

Baseball U award = $1,500

Pell Grant = $3,000

Total = $12,000 (85.7% total scholarship)

Keep in mind that in baseball a 30% scholarship offer is considered a major commitment on behalf of the college.  Players also have the potential to earn scholarship raises throughout their college careers.  This means that someone who starts off with a 15% athletic scholarship could be receiving a 75% athletic scholarship his senior year.

NCAA Clearinghouse and The HOPE Scholarship
For any athlete that wants to continue playing sports into their collegiate days, knowing about the importance of the "Clearinghouse Rules" and how the "Hope" scholarship can help you is imperative.

INITIAL-ELIGIBILITY CLEARINGHOUSE

A central clearinghouse will certify your athletics eligibility for Division I and II. If you intend to participate in Division I or II athletics as a Freshman, you must register and be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. The following web links will better clarify this process and start you on your way to being certified. This process will cost you $30 and can be done with your school or on the web (credit card needed). This eligibility clearinghouse basically is verifying that you took the required approved NCAA Core Courses while in high school. Since the NCAA is verifying your Core Courses, it is recommended that you apply AFTER your Junior year. When you take your SAT's, be sure to mark code 9999 on the test and your scores will automatically be sent to the NCAA Clearinghouse.

All of this information plus much more is located at:

www.ncaaclearinghouse.net

Also, to get a feel for the NCAA overall, go to:

www.ncaa.org

OK, now you know how to become eligible for college sports but you are not done. The odds of making it to the pros is pretty slim (but that doesn't mean you can't still shoot for it):

1 high school football player makes the pros for every 6,000 enrolled in high school

1 high school basketball player makes the pros for every 10,000 enrolled in high school

So just in case you are not one of those "1's" above, maybe it would be a good idea to get a good education while you're at it. Also, since only 11.7 scholarships go to baseball players, any coach who has a tough decision to make between two borderline players will almost always pick the one who qualifies for the HOPE scholarship.

If you are taking a "college prep" curriculum in high school, you need to hold at least a 3.0 grade point average to qualify for the HOPE scholarship. If you are taking a "tech" curriculum, the GPA must be 3.2. The HOPE scholarship will pay for tuition, books and other incidentals (not room and board) to all public or private Georgia colleges. As long as you maintain the 3.0 GPA, you will continue to receive the HOPE scholarship. This and other information can be found at:

www.gsfc.org

Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful Scholarships

This is just a reminder that we have two scholarships available for graduating seniors.  The application is attached here and it is very simple.  The deadline is March 31st.  If you are HS, please forward this scholarship info as appropriate.  If you are MS or Elem, perhaps you could forward to teachers, neighbors, relatives, or someone you might know who has a graduating senior.

The scholarships are designed to provide assistance to a student who has successfully completed high school and is focused on achieving environmental career goals though higher education.  Environmental education is interdisciplinary and therefore may apply to various fields of study; which may include, but are not limited to:  education, economics, law and policy, wildlife conservation, soil preservation, technology, agriculture, engineering, toxicology, biology, climatology, and other scientific disciplines.  In evaluating each application, the scholarship committee will also consider environmental service participation in school and community activities.

Thank you for spreading the word.
