Collins Hill 8, Forsyth Central 3 SUWANEE - Collins Hill hit three homers, including two from Tommy Yeo, in an 8-3 win over Forsyth Central on Monday. Yeo finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs for the Eagles (12-13, 8-7). James Buckelew (2-for-3) drove in a run. Nick Squeglia struck out nine over five innings, but got a no-decision. Curtis Guest pitched two scoreless innings of relief to get the win.
Trio of homers lift Eagles to win CUMMING - Michael Adams, Tommy Yeo and Curtis Guest each hit a home run to help the Eagles take a 7-1 win over North Forsyth on Friday. Garitt Church was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs. Grant Earls (2-1) struck out six batters and gave up three hits in five innings. Reed Buck pitched a scoreless sixth inning and Morgan Ownbey threw a scoreless seventh for Collins Hill (11-13).
Hawks hold off Eagles' rally SUWANEE - In a game with plenty of wasted opportunities, Mill Creek finally capitalized on some late in Wednesday's Region 7-AAAAA game at Collins Hill. The No. 7 state-ranked Hawks scored three huge insurance runs in the top of the seventh, and then held off the host Eagles' attempt at a rally in the bottom of the inning to come away with a 6-3 victory. The win keeps Mill Creek (15-4, 10-1) 21⁄2 games in front of second-place Norcross in the region standings. More importantly to coach Doug Jones, it keeps his team taking care of its own business. "It's important to keep momentum going to make the playoffs," Jones said. "We've still got a long way to go." Each team had some problems taking care of business given the opportunities presented. Mill Creek got two hits and took two walks in the top of the first, but came away with only one run when a runner was doubled up on Zach Hogan's liner to left. It was the first of several baserunning mistakes by both teams on the evening as the Hawks also had a runner caught stealing and two more called out at the plate later in the game. Meanwhile, Collins Hill (10-11, 6-5) hit into a key double play in the first inning, plus had a runner caught stealing and another picked off at second. But Mill Creek did take advantage of a few opportunities. First, Hunter Pope's two-out RBI single in the second pushed the Hawks' lead to 2-0. An inning later, Noah Hanley led off by launching a 1-1 pitch from James Buckelew (4-3) about 3 feet inside the right field line that bounced off the top of the wall at the 311-foot mark and over for a solo home run. Hanley's first round-tripper of the year extended Mill Creek's lead to 3-0. Collins Hill cut that lead to 3-2 when Buckelew and Michael Adams led off the bottom of the third with back-to-back doubles and Adams came home on a throwing error on Garritt Church's sacrifice bunt. However, Jacob German gunned down Derrick Johnson trying to steal and Cody Clickner (2-2) got the next two hitters to limit the damage and keep Mill Creek in front. "When he's up in the zone, he's going to struggle," Jones said of Clickner, who gave up five hits and two runs, struck out three and walked two in 42⁄3 innings. "But he gave us four-plus good innings (Wednesday) night." With both teams missing scoring chances throughout the game, Mill Creek finally cashed in during the top of the seventh. German, Hanley and Matt Tunnell strung together three straight one-out hits, which, combined with an outfield throwing error, resulted in two big insurance runs and stretched Mill Creek's lead to 5-2. Two batters later, Johnny Knight blooped a two-out RBI single to right to plate pinch runner Joe Ryan and extend the Hawks' lead to 6-2. "(Mill Creek) spoiled a lot of good pitches (in the top of the seventh)," Eagles coach Paul Pierce said. "They did a good job of putting some pitchers' pitches in play. They got a few opportunities late, and they took advantage." Collins Hill made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh as three walks, a Mill Creek error and fielder's choice pushed across a run to make the score 6-3, and brought the potential winning run to the plate. But Tyler Akens came on in relief of Brian Holmes and needed just one pitch to get Curtis Guest to bounce to the mound and record his second save of the season. "I'm proud of my guys and how they fought hard (to try to come back)," said Pierce, whose team stranded 10 runners on the night. Tunnell finished the night 3-for-44 with a pair of RBIs, while Hanley was 2-for-3 with the homer and German also added two hits. Adams led Collins Hill by going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Collins Hill 12, Duluth 0 DULUTH - Grant Earls pitched a one-hit shutout as Collins Hill beat Duluth 12-0 in five innings on Monday. Earls struck out six and allowed two walks to get the win. Curtis Guest went 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs to lead the Eagles (10-10, 6-4). Garritt Church went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

Garrett, Norcross edge out Eagles 1-0
A controversial balk allowed Tyler Roach to trot home with what turned out to be the winning run as Norcross' Forrest Garrett outdueled Collins Hill's Nick Squeglia in the Blue Devils' 1-0 victory. The balk was one of very few mistakes Squeglia - a senior right-hander headed to Georgia State next fall - made all night. He gave up just three hits and the one earned run with three strikeouts. But Garrett was even better. The left-hander also allowed just three hits and threw 107 pitches in getting the complete-game shutout. He struck out 10, including six in the last three innings. "My guy was throwing good, and their guy was (also) throwing good," Garrett said. "We were just able to push a run across at the right time." Squeglia (2-2) was matching Garrett pitch for pitch early, however, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Roach sent his first offering into the gap in right-center for a leadoff double. Drew Lennox then singled Roach to third, but it looked like Squeglia might escape the jam after Chris McGowan gunned down courtesy runner Devin O'Malley trying to steal second and Matt Kinsey popped out to second. However, the base umpire called the balk, sending Roach home and putting the Blue Devils up 1-0. "It's tough this time of year," Collins Hill coach Paul Pierce said. "I hate for my guys. They battled and competed all night. But Norcross played great. They got an opportunity and took advantage." The Eagles had chances in their final three at bats to push across a run. In the fifth with the game still scoreless, McGowan reached on an infield single, went to second on a throwing error and reached third on Grant Earls' fly ball to center. Morgan Ownbey looked like he might give Collins Hill the lead when he laid down a soft bunt on a suicide squeeze play with courtesy runner Stephen Johnson sprinting down the line. But the ball rolled just foul, forcing Johnson back to third, and Garrett made sure he stayed there by striking out Ownbey and James Buckelew to escape the threat. "That's baseball," Pierce said of the near miss on the squeeze bunt. "We had a couple of opportunities, but like I said, (Norcross) got an opportunity and took advantage and we didn't." Collins Hill had two more chances, putting a runner on third with one out in the sixth and runners on first and second with one out in the seventh. But each time, Garrett came through, as he posted one strikeout and a line out by Tommy Yeo in the sixth and then got two strikeouts on high fastballs to get out of trouble in the seventh and preserve the shutout. "I just wanted to get the out at the plate (in the late jams) any way I could," Garrett said. "I tried to go up in the (strike) zone, and I knew every pitch counts in a situation like that. I didn't want to give up the lead." Pinch hitter Josh Reich had Norcross' only other hit, while McGowan finished the night 2-for-2 with a double for Collins Hill.
Collins Hill 4, Forsyth Central 1 CUMMING - Collins Hill trailed 1-0 after six innings but plated four runs in the top of the seventh to come away 4-1 winners over Forsyth Central on Tuesday in Region 7-AAAAA. Grant Earls, who finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run, provided the big blow with a two-run double for the Eagles. James Buckelew (one hit, RBI run), Michael Adams (1-for-3, RBI) and Chris McGowan (double, run) each had good games for Collins Hill (8-8, 4-2). Curtis Guest picked up the win in relief, going six scoreless innings with five strikeouts and five hits.

Collins Hill 18, South Forsyth 0 CUMMING - Collins Hill hit two homers in a 18-0 pounding of South Forsyth in three innings on Wednesday in Region 7-AAAAA play. Grant Earls hit a three-run homer and drove in six runs to lead the Eagles (7-8, 3-2). He went 2-for-2 at the plate. Garritt Church (2-for-3, three runs) also hit a two-run homer. Chris McGowan went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs, while James Buckelew drove in a pair of runs and scored twice. Michael Adams scored three runs. Nick Squegila (3-1) struck out three as part of a two-hit shutout.

South beats Collins Hill in extra innings SNELLVILLE - It wasn't a game-winning hit, but Kyle Maloney's fly to center field was enough. South Gwinnett scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to beat Collins Hill 6-5 on Thursday. Maloney hit a pitch deep enough to center field to score Kenny Sanderson and give the Comets (6-6-1) the win. Nick Blount led South with three hits and an RBI. Lance Whatley went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Brett Teschner also had two hits and an RBI, as did Corey Benson. Josh Pugh allowed one earned run over six innings, but got a no-decision. Jeremy Williams (1-0) allowing no runs or hits in 2⁄3 of an inning to get the win. Michael Adams led the Eagles (6-8) with a three and an RBI. Curtis Guest was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Chris McGowan was 2-for-3.
North 6, Collins Hill 5 SUWANEE - Nick McCouch doubled in pinch runner Luke Strickland in the bottom of the eighth to give North Gwinnett a 6-5 win over Collins Hill on Friday. Ronnie Stewart added two hits and two RBIs for North (9-4, 2-2) with a double, while Will Huff belted a two-run homer. Nick Jones (3-1) pitched three strong innings of relief for the win, striking out two and allowing just one hit. Reed Dutton and Tommy Yeo each hit solo home runs for Collins Hill.
Clutch Hanley hit gives Mill Creek region win HOSCHTON - Noah Hanley drove in the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth to give Mill Creek a 9-7 win over Collins Hill in a battle of Region 7-AAAAA unbeatens Wednesday. The Hawks (8-2, 3-0) had the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth when Hanley ripped a single to left-center field, driving in two and breaking a 7-7 tie. Hanely finished with four RBIs and two hits. Brian Holmes (2-1) pitched 32⁄3 innings out of the bullpen to get the win. Zach Hogan went 3-for-3 with an RBI for Mill Creek. Sam Davis and Greg Brody each had two runs, two hits and a triple. Brody also drove in a run. The Eagles (6-6, 2-1) were led by Grant Earls who went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and two RBIs. Chris McGowan was also 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. James Buckelew drove in three runs and went 2-for-2.
Collins Hill 7, Duluth 0 SUWANEE - James Buckelew (3-0) shut out Duluth on four hits with eight strikeouts, leading Collins Hill to a 7-0 win on Monday. Michael Adams went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Eagles (6-5, 2-0). Tommy Yeo drove in three to go with two doubles. Curtis Guest also had two hits and an RBI. Ricky Lowe (0-2) took the loss for the Wildcats (1-8, 0-2). He gave up only one earned run over five innings to go with five strikeouts. Luke Jordan, Reid Merwin, Josh McKinney, and Wesley Newton each had a hit for Duluth.
Guest star - Collins Hill starter fills in as closer in win over Lions
But if the junior right-hander had any butterflies in his stomach, he sure didn't show it. Guest recorded the final five outs of the game - including inducing a key double play to snuff out a Peachtree Ridge rally in the sixth - to record his first save of the season in the Eagles' 4-3 victory over the Lions in the region opener for both teams at Peachtree Ridge. "They're a good team," Collins Hill coach Paul Pierce said after his team improved to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the region. "We feel fortunate to come in here and pick up a win." They were able to do so thanks not only to Guest's heroics at the end, but also the ability of starter Nick Squeglia (2-1) to constantly accomplish good damage control. The senior Georgia State signee allowed the leadoff hitter to reach base all but one of the first six innings, but scattered five hits and three runs over 51â"3 innings with two strikeouts and two walks to pick up the win. And with the Eagles playing solid defense behind both the senior right-hander and Guest, that was enough. "(Squeglia and Guest) did a good job of hammering the (strike) zone and letting the defense make plays," Pierce said. That wasn't quite the case with Peachtree Ridge (4-6, 0-1) which committed four errors on the day. However, it wasn't defense that cost the Lions when Collins Hill took the lead in the top of the second. A pair of hit batsmen and three hits - including an RBI single by Grant Earls and an RBI double by Garritt Church - helped the Eagles put three on the board to take a 3-0 lead. Peachtree Ridge answered with Robert Gomez's two-out, two-run home run to right center in the bottom of the inning to pull to within 3-2. However, the Lions could never put a big inning together despite having opportunities to do so. "It was a pretty frustrating game," Peachtree Ridge coach Bubba Wilson said. "We needed a big hit when we had a chance to score. But give (Collins Hill) credit. They made the plays when they needed to." Of course, the Eagles were having their own problems getting the big hit despite extending their lead to 4-2 on Tommy Yeo's solo homer to right-center in the fifth. They stranded a total of 10 runners on the day, which looked like it might come back to haunt them in the sixth. Chris Brunatti was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and went to second on Kyle Taylor's ground out to third. That spelled the end of the day for Squeglia, and Pierce called on Guest, who was met by Jared Walsh's RBI single that pulled Peachtree Ridge to within 4-3. But Guest got Gomez to send a grounder to third, where Earls fired to Morgan Ownbey, who made the turn at second to get Gomez at first for a double play to end the threat. "Most of the outs I get are ground balls anyway," Guest said. "I threw a fastball, and I got one. "I've been used (in relief) before, but not much in a save situation. To come through, especially against our biggest rival, feels good." Guest then set down the Lions in order to record his first save of the season. Offensively, the Eagles got a 2-for-3 day from Yeo, though the first baseman was forced to leave the game with an shoulder injury after making a key defensive play to end the fifth. James Buckelew also drove in a run for Collins Hill. Nate Chong went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles for Peachtree Ridge.
Collins Hill 8, Marist 2 SUWANEE - Collins Hill hit four home runs in an 8-2 win over Marist on Thursday. Michael Adams had two of the homers, both solo, as part of a 3-for-4 day. James Buckelew hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs for the Eagles (4-3). He went 2-for-3. Curtis Guest also hit a two-run homer. He was the winning pitcher, allowing two unearned runs over seven innings. Guest (1-0) allowed three hits and struck out two.
Collins Hill slams door on Parkview in 6-4 victory SUWANEE - James Buckelew couldn't quite finish what he started. The Collins Hill starter left with two outs and two on in the top of the seventh. It took Reed Buck one pitch to slam the door. He got his first save as Collins Hill beat No. 2 Parkview 6-4 on Wednesday in a non-region baseball game. Buckelew (2-0) did get the win. He had five strikeouts and gave up nine hits in 6 2⁄3 innings. Tommy Yeo led the Eagles (3-3) with four RBIs and a solo home run. Curtis Guest went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Michael Adams went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Zack Olson (1-1) got the loss for the Panthers (3-2). He pitched 2 1⁄3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits to go with three strikeouts and two walks. Kenny Bellavance went 2-for-4. Tom Richardson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Kenny Miller was also 2-for-3 and had an RBI.
If your physical expires before April 1st, you will need to have another physical before the end of the year.
Kennesaw Mtn. 8, Collins Hill 7 KENNESAW - Collins Hill fell to 2-3 on Tuesday after dropping an 8-7 decision to Kennesaw Mountain. Eagle starter Alex Sokolowski pitched well, but came away with a no decision, lasting 42⁄3 innings with five strikeouts, two walks and three earned runs. Offensively, the Eagles were led by Chris McGowan, who had a two-run triple and scored two runs. James Buckelew also went 2-for-4 while Tommy Yeo added a two-run double.
Eagle Parents, Attached is the grill schedule for the upcoming baseball season. For families new to the program who might not know what the schedule is for, we ask parents to work the grill during home games. Your help is very important to the success of our concession stand at The Hill. If there is a conflict with the date you have been assigned, please arrange to trade with another parent on your team. Let me know via email any changes that are made. Also, if games get rescheduled, you will need to work the game on the new date. Additionally, we need a JV parent (or two) and a 9th Grade parent (or two) who will be a concession stand coordinator during their respective home games. For the most part I will be there to open and close, etc., but will need help during the season. The people in this role would be responsible for opening the concession stand, getting things ready for the game, be available for the Diamond Girls who work the concession stand, closing down, etc. This is particularly important during 9th Grade games since Varsity and JV play away games when 9th Grade is at home. This is another opportunity to get involved. We can't be successful without support from the parents. Please contact me via email if you are interested. Thanks in advance for support and Go Eagles!!! To all Parents, At 7:00 PM Thursday night 3/6/08 we will be meeting at the school to discuss the progress of the signboard sales. We are actively selling signs for the scoreboard and both signboards but we need help to complete the sale of all of them. This program is very important in our fund raising effort and we need any help you can offer. The meeting will be to discuss what companies we are actively calling on and what leads we have that still need to be pursued. Even if you are only interested in making phone call to generate leads we can use your help. If you have questions you can reach me at 404-538-1176 Thanks for your help and support.
