Eagles Coaches
Thursday, November 8 Asst. Coaches
Billy Dooley Friday, March 31 Getting to Know ... Paul Pierce (from the Gwinnett Daily Post Paul Pierce, 35, is the head baseball coach at Collins Hill and has led the Eagles to an 8-3 mark so far this season. In this latest installment of Getting to Know, the Georgia Southern grad and Macon native talks with staff writer Corey Clark on a variety of topics, ranging from his fast-growing family to his namesake with the Boston Celtics to the Barry Bonds controversy. CC: So youre family keeps on growing huh? PP: Yes, my wifes name is Chelsea, shes from North Gwinnett. And weve got two sons, Caleb and Luke and another one thats on the way. My oldest is 21 months, the youngest is eight months old and the next one is due on Aug. 23. CC: Wow. Taking care of the family thing all at once, huh? PP: (laughs) Yes sir. Thats going to be three (kids) under three (years of age). CC: What was the first job you had growing up? PP: I went to work for my dad as a mechanic when I was 13. It was the South Georgia way, I guess. He owned his own garage in Macon. CC: Still pretty handy around an engine? PP: Oh yeah, Im the school mechanic. I work on our mower, the green machine, coaches cars, pressure washers. We just do what it takes. But its fun, its something I enjoy doing. CC: And youre first job out of college was at Collins Hill? PP: I got hired in 1997 out of Georgia Southern. I was really blessed. I was the 9th grade coach and a science teacher ... and I was fortunate enough to play at Georgia Southern under Jack Stallings. He taught me a lot about the game of baseball. CC: What position did you play at Southern? PP: Second base. My claim to fame was in the Blue and White game. My only claim to fame was I drove in Todd Greene in that game and thats the only way I got my name in the paper. I only drove him in once, but that was my claim to fame. CC: When did you know you wanted to be a coach? PP: Probably when I finished playing at Southern. I still had some years to go in education, and I changed my major and took some education classes. And there were a lot of people that have coached me that were a special part of my life and I wanted a job like that. I always wanted to get a job where you enjoy going to work and enjoy what you do. My mom says shes envious of me because well be talking and Ill say, yeah, we play tonight. And she says, I just thank the Lord that you have a job that you love getting up for. A lot of people dread getting up to go to work. But I dont. I cant wait to get up and get to the field. (laughs) Now, if you write that, I might get a divorce, but you know what I mean. CC: Do you ever get confused with the NBA player Paul Pierce? PP: Sometimes. Thats what a lot of my friends say, that they cant forget about me because anytime they turn on SportsCenter, Paul Pierce is on there. So they automatically think of me. CC: Do you guys have similar games? PP: No sir. I was a basketball contributor. I was the sixth man off the bench, sometimes the seventh. CC: Whats the best western of all time? PP: Oooh, its either the Outlaw Josey Wales or Lonesome Dove. Thats a tough decision ... my mom would get mad at me on rainy days because she would leave the house in the summer and I would throw in Lonesome Dove. And back then it came in tapes, and it was four tapes. And we would watch all four tapes in one day. Wed do that the whole time it was raining. Wed do that two or three times in one week. CC: Whats your favorite thing to do outside of baseball? PP: Thats tough. I have a motorcycle, I like to ride that. I ride that to work sometimes. But I really like spending time with my family, because theres so little time of it ... we have a tough job. A lot of people dont understand. Coaches leave the house and the kids are asleep and when we get home the kids are asleep. There are very few quality hours with them unless they come up the field. Im married to a real good woman, she stands behind me and she appreciates what I do. So they come up and spend time with me, theyll watch a JV or 9th grade game with me, and thats a chance to spend time with the boys and thats real special. CC: Should Barry Bonds be suspended permanently? PP: I just wonder why he sat out an entire year (last season). Why it took him so long to come back. But if they cant really prove anything, you have to take the mans word. What else can you do, if you dont have proof? CC: But if he did do it, how unfair would it be for him to break Hank Aarons home run record? PP: If he cheated and cheated the game, then I think that would be a tragedy. As coaches we try to help our players and young men do right. Thats one of the only rules we have here do right. And hes got children. What kind of role model is he for his kids and what he stands for if hes willing to cheat the game especially a game thats been so good to him? (Pause) Man, I feel like Im on the Budweiser Hot Seat. CC: I hear you, just a couple more questions. Who is the best high school player youve ever seen? PP: Francoeur. No question. CC: Did you pitch to him? PP: We did. And he made us pay several times. Several times ... hes still sending us thank-you cards. CC: How long do you want to continue to do this? PP: I just enjoy it so much. Like I said earlier, I love my job. I treasure every day the Lord gives me to get up and come to school and interact with young people and try to give back to them what some people in my life have given to me. Thats our future, so if I can mold and guide someone into what I think is the right direction, then that really satisfies me. Dr. Jeff A Traub - Team Doctor Dr. Traub is the school sports doctor.
