Eagles Taste their Own Medicine (4/18/09)
Well, turn around may be fair play, but it was certainly a bitter pill to swallow after Friday night’s win. The Eagles travelled to NGHS on Saturday morning for a re-match and the Bulldogs were ready. NG pitcher, Gary Mattocks, effectively shut down the Eagle’s offense just as Wayne had the night before. The Eagles managed just one (infield) hit by Connor Boston. The Eagles fielding was flawless, not an error was made. In fact, there were some plays worth mentioning: Andrew Alden made a nice play at short for the first out of the game; and then Andrew combined with Jonathan Formont for the final out of that inning when Jonathan threw to Andrew when the runner on 1B started to steal and Andrew fired it right back and Jonathan tagged the runner attempting to score. Another good relay play came in the second when Matt Hester fielded a double to right field, threw it to Andrew, who then fired it to Jonathan for another out at the plate. Trevor Legg made a tough play on the mound when he took a ball off his foot but recovered in time to get the out with a toss to Travis at 1B. The outfielders, unfortunately, got a lot of work and Matt McCain, Matt Hester and Andrew Sever all showed great hustle, with McCain and Hester each making big running catches. Michael Rea started for the Eagles with Trevor Legg coming to the mound in the middle of the second inning, but there was to be no relief from the barrage of the Bulldog’s bats. Sean Stephansen took the mound for the final out of the game, and got it with a strike out. Eagles 0 – Bulldogs 10.
Eagles Shutdown 1st Place Bulldogs (4/17/09)
The golden left arm of pitcher Wayne Wages held the Bulldog bats at bay. Wayne was really in his groove as he pitched a complete game allowing just one hit and striking out 6 batters. (Wayne’s pitching looked even more impressive after the Bulldog slugfest that ensued Saturday morning when the Eagles went to NGHS for their second face-off against North.) The Eagle’s fielders provided great back up; notably a great catch on an extremely high pop-up by Matt Osterbur at 2B; a running catch by Shawn Stachler (3B) who ran deep onto the outfield grass to make the play; and a two foot vertical leap by Wayne himself to save a line shot up the middle. The Eagle’s offense took advantage of the fielding woes of the Bulldogs and scored 4 unearned runs on 6 hits and 6 errors by NG. Brandon Black went 3 for 3 with a walk and scored one run; Matt Osterbur had a hit and two SAC bunts; and Travis Lambert and Trevor Legg had the other 2 hits and they each scored a run. Charlie Padilla, who has been hit by a pitch 3 times in his last 7 at bats, was “beaned” again and scored. Ethan Crist was robbed of a tremendous blast when the NG center fielder made a stunning catch to end the 6th inning. The North Gwinnett team had just one loss when they arrived at The Hill Friday night, and the Eagles sent them home with another: Eagles 4 – NG 0.
A Perfect Game for Crist (4/16/09)
Last night starting pitcher, Ethan Crist, threw a 5 inning perfect game that resulted in the Eagles winning a 10 – 0 mercy over the Northview Titans. The Titans didn’t know what hit them because the last time the two teams clashed, the Eagles barely pulled out an 8th inning win. E was really on fire – throwing just 60 pitches without giving up a hit or a walk and striking out 5 (three straight K’s got him out of the 3rd inning in record time). His fielders backed him up with “error-less” play, so not a single batter reached base. There were 3 key fielding plays that allowed E to pitch in total confidence that his team was behind him: Andrew Alden, at short, timed his jump just right to snag a blistering line drive to end the 2nd inning; Jimmy Shea, at 2B, made a diving catch on a ground ball up the middle and recovered in time to make the throw from his knees to Travis (1B) for the first out of the 5th inning; and the final out of the game came when Matt McCain hustled after a fly ball in right center (causing E’s heart rate to return to normal!). Demonstrating that he could help his team offensively as well, Ethan had a single and a double. Trevor Legg had a good day at the plate, going 2 for 3 with 1 RBI. Also with hits were: Charlie Padilla (who also got “beaned” twice, resulting in 1 RBI); Connor Boston had an RBI single; Travis Lambert had an RBI single and a SAC fly; Wayne Wages and Jimmy Shea each had a single, as did Matt Hester who entered the game in the final inning and knocked in the game ending 10th run.
Eagles Beat the Wildcats in their Own Lair (4/15/09)
On another unseasonably chilly evening, the Eagles cruised to a 6 – 1 win over the Duluth Wildcats at Duluth HS. Starting pitcher, Bradley Johnson, did a fantastic job, going 6 1/3 innings with just two hits and one run, while striking out 6 batters. Andrew Alden came in to close out the 7th and faced just two batters. The Eagles played solid defense with a couple of plays worthy of mention: Iain Risk (catcher) threw a runner out with Michael Rea making the tag at 2B; and Jimmy Shea made a great play at short, diving for a ball up the middle and making the throw from the ground. Iain had a big night at the plate with 2 base hits and a SAC fly for 3 RBIs. Ethan Crist has 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Also with hits were: Royce Baptist and Michael Rea.
The Eagles had an Up and Down Saturday (4/11/09)
The freshman Eagles played a double-header against the Milton Eagles on Saturday with split results. In game #1, the starter, Wayne Wages, effectively shut-down the Milton offense; allowing just one hit through 4 1/3 innings while striking out 8 batters. Relief pitcher, Bradley Johnson, did a great job finishing out the 5th and 6th innings, with only one hit and 2 K’s. Travis Lambert, “The Closer”, faced just 3 batters and with the help of a 9-3 double play (Trevor Legg caught a line to right and fired it to Ethan Crist at 1B) and a foul pop-up that Ethan hustled to catch, finished out the 3-2 win for the CH Eagles. There were several other terrific fielding plays: Travis stretched out to almost a full split to make the final out of the 5th; Charlie made a great foul catch up against the brick back-stop and the catch of the game goes to Jonathan Formont who made a diving foul catch from 3B and ended up sliding into the dugout! Charlie and Travis both went 2 for 3 with a single and a double a piece and each had an RBI; Travis scored the first run of the game when he was knocked in on a ground ball from Andrew Sever. Also with base hits were Connor Boston, Andrew Alden and Andrew Sever. In game #2, the Eagle’s pitching staff found the strike zone elusive, averaging 3.5 walks per inning. Combine that with 9 hits for Milton and 3 Es on the Eagles – ouch! – and the result: 14 – 3 loss for Collins Hill. Offensively the Eagles couldn’t get much going either with just 4 hits: Shawn Stachler went 2 for 3 with 2 base hits and 2 RBIs; Bradley Johnson and Andrew Alden had the other hits. Ethan Crist had the other RBI when he got “beaned” at the plate with bases loaded. After a renewing themselves on a beautiful Easter Sunday and getting back to school, the Eagles will return ready to fight when they face the Duluth Wildcats on Wednesday.
Eagles Record Back-to-Back Big Wins (4/6/09 & 4/7/09)
Despite freezing temperatures and gusting wind on Monday night the Eagles played strong against the North Forsyth Raiders, winning by an impressive margin: 13 – 2. Ethan Crist was rock solid on the mound, going 6 innings and only allowing 2 hits and one run while striking out 4. Travis Lambert came in to close it down in the 7th, allowing one run on 2 hits and striking out the first and last batter and picking one off at first (with Crist making the tag). Andrew Alden made a great play at short for the first out of the 6th. Noteworthy at the plate: Travis Lambert had 2 doubles and a triple with 2 RBIs (scoring all 3 times), Jimmy Shea went 2 for 3 with an RBI and one run, and Matt Hester, who came off the frozen bench in the 7th and made the most of his one at bat with a single up the middle (and later scored). Also jumping in for the final inning: Matt McCain, who was patient and walked and later scored; Iain Risk, who got “beaned” with bases loaded for an RBI; Michael Rea, who got up to bat twice in the 7th, walked both times and got an RBI; and Royce Baptist, who reached on error, but got an RBI and later scored. Also with hits for the night: Brandon Black, lead-off double; Jonathan Formont, bunt single in the 1st; and Andrew Alden. On Tuesday night the temperatures were not much better but the wind had calmed somewhat when the Eagles faced the Duluth Wildcats on The Hill. This game was close through 5 innings, with the score 3 – 2 Eagles at the end of 5. In the 6th inning, the Eagles scored 6 runs, and the Wildcats couldn’t answer back; the final score was 9 – 2. Starting pitcher, Sean Stephansen, went 4 innings allowing just one hit and one run and striking out 2. Andrew Alden came to the mound for the 5th and 6th allowing no hits, one unearned run and striking out 2. Travis Lambert came in to close again, striking out the first and sending the next two packing on ground balls (fielding the final ball himself with a little toss to Ethan at 1B). The Eagle fielders were happy to be on their home turf and it showed: Charlie made some nice plays at short; Matt McCain had a great running catch in center; Bradley made a great play when he charged a slow rolling bunt toward 3rd and fired it to Ethan who made the scoop at first; Michael Rea helped out first baseman, Casey Innis, when Casey lost sight of a high pop to 1B – Michael was there backing him up and made the catch; Iain and Casey combined for an out when Iain (catcher) threw to 1B to keep the runner close and the runner on third tried to come home – Casey fired it back and Iain made the tag; later in the game Jonathan Formont was behind the plate and caught a runner trying to steal third (with Bradley making the tag). Noteworthy at the plate: Matt Hester went 3 for 4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored; Matt McCain went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored; Andrew Sever had a hit and an RBI; Michael Rea had a nice bunt single; Ethan Crist entered the game for the final inning and had a hit; Drew Giudici also entered the game for the final inning and his patience earned him a walk and an RBI.

Eagles Soar Over Blue Devils (3/21/09)
The freshman Eagles posted a stunning victory, 8 – 0, over the Norcross Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon. Starting pitcher, Wayne Wages, pitched a complete game shut-out, allowing just a single hit (he then picked that runner off in a 1-3-6 with Lambert and Alden) while striking out EIGHT batters! Wages also had 2 hits and an RBI. Supporting the team offensively were Connor Boston, who batted 1000 on the day with 2 singles, a double, a walk, and 2 RBIs; Jimmy Shea, who had 2 singles and an RBI; and Travis Lambert, who had a hit and 3 RBIs. The fielding was sharp with honorable mention going to Lambert at 1B, who made some good scoops, stretches and a running foul pop-up catch; Charlie Padilla, who made a nice catch on a high, foul pop-up behind the plate while looking full into the sun; and Bradley Johnson, who entered the game for the final 2 innings at 3B and made an unflinching catch on a rocket line-drive that marked the first out of the 7th. Next up for the Eagles: Duluth Wildcats, 3/25, at the Hill & NG Bulldogs, 3/27, at NGHS.
Eagles Come Up Short (3.18.09)
Cold bats and slippery hands caused the Eagles to suffer a disappointing loss to the Mill Creek Hawks on Wednesday (5 – 0). Despite the lack of defensive and offensive support, the Eagle pitchers held it together. Starter, Ethan Crist, went 3 2/3 innings allowing just four hits and no earned runs. Middle relief pitchers, Bradley Johnson and Matt McCain, each took 2/3 of an inning, with McCain facing just two batters and getting the two outs. Closer, Royce Baptist, came in to finish up in the bottom of the 6th and went 3 up – 3 down on fielded balls. Charlie Padilla had good game: batting 1000 on the day with a hit and 2 walks and was behind the plate the entire game without a single passed ball. Charlie also displayed the fearless attitude the team needs in their catcher when he attempted to catch a foul pop up and almost splattered himself on the brick wall. Casey Innis did a fine job at 1B, saving a few poor throws to make the outs and made a great catch in foul territory. The Eagles will shake themselves off and get ready to face the Norcross Blue Devils on Saturday at the Hill.
The Eagles Tame the Lions (3.11.09)
The Freshman Eagles beat the Lions, 8 – 5, on a blustery afternoon at Peachtree Ridge High School. The Eagles came out swinging and got 3 quick runs in the first off hits by Charlie Padilla, Trevor Legg (2 for 3), Travis Lambert (3 for 4) and Iain Risk. Additional runs came with hits from Wayne Wages, Connor Boston, Jimmy Shea (2 for 2, w/ 2 walks), Drew Guidici, a sac bunt from Jonathan Formont and a sac fly from Matt Hester. The Eagles pitchers (Andrew Alden, Sean Stephansen, Matt Mccain and Michael Rea) all gave fine performances. Outfielders Matt Hester, Andrew Sever and Trevor Legg all made great catches despite the high winds gusting in the outfield. There was a sharply executed 4 – 6 – 3 double-play that ended the first inning with Shea at 2B, Padilla at short and Lambert at 1B. Lambert gets the play of the game when, in the 3rd inning, he jumped about 2 feet in the air to snag a rocket line drive, saving a run from scoring. The Freshman Eagles are off to a great start with a 4 – 1 record.
Exciting Come from Behind Win for the Freshman Eagles (3.10.09)
The fans were treated to an exhilarating ride on Tuesday night as the Eagles battled back from a 5 run deficit to overcome the North Forsyth Raiders, 12 – 11. For the first 4 innings the Eagles appeared to be on cruise-control with Trevor Legg on the mound. The fielding was sharp and Legg gave up no hits, and no runs while striking out 3 batters. The Eagles had a 5 – 0 lead after 4 innings, with hits from Brandon Black, Shawn Stachler, Connor Boston, Jonathan Formont, Andrew Alden, and a sac fly from Casey Innis. In the 5th inning, the Eagles hit some bumps in the road, allowing 7 runs on 5 hits. The struggle continued into the next inning, with 3 more runs coming in, leaving the Eagles behind 10 – 5 when they came to the plate in the bottom of the 6th. The Eagles, not ready to call it quits, came storming back with a big triple from Wayne Wages (who then stole home), a single from Bradley Johnson scored two, a double from Ethan Crist scored two more, tying the game, and then a base hit from Matt Osterbur scored the go ahead run. The Raiders scored one in the top of the 7th to tie the game, and then Travis Lambert took the mound and struck out the final two batters to end the inning. Wages led off the bottom of the 7th with a single and then stole second. Lambert laid down a nice sac bunt that was overthrown to 1B; allowing Wages to score the winning run.
