Adrian College
NCAA III
THE BASICS
Athletics are an important part of student life at Adrian, where every student has the chance to realize personal growth through physical accomplishment. Whether you want to join an intercollegiate team, participate in organized intramurals, develop life skills in a sport or just have fun, you'll find ample opportunity at Adrian. Adrian is committed to a broad-based program of intercollegiate athletics, sponsoring 16 varsity sports - eight for men and eight for women. Varsity teams can include first-year students, while junior varsity sports allow students with little background in a sport to discover whether they have the talent and dedication to advance to the varsity level. Intramural teams allow the student to participate in a structured but less intense environment.
WHO WE ARE
Our athletic program has a long tradition of winning in one of the toughest NCAA Division III conferences in the country. Adrian competes in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), the oldest athletic conference in the nation. Each member of the MIAA - Adrian, Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet and Saint Mary's (Ind.) - emphasizes the balance between academic achievement and athletic competition. Champions of the MIAA are likely to qualify for NCAA Division III national tournaments. As a member of the NCAA Division III, Adrian does not award athletic scholarships. Rather, it makes financial assistance available to those students who meet the college's academic standards and demonstrate financial need. All Adrian College students benefit from the same high level of attention in admission, academic advising, course selection, living and dining accommodations and financial aid.
WHO WE PLAY
Adrian regularly competes against colleges in the Midwest, playing contests in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. Many teams travel extensively for tournaments or training, and recently our teams visited Florida, Nevada, Texas, New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Classes are structured so student-athletes can attend practices and games with few conflicts. Coaches, athletic directors and faculty athletic representatives work together to minimize class absences for trips or games, with special attention paid to first-year students.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
Students who participate in athletics learn to compete, to cooperate, and to challenge themselves physically. Success on the field, however, comes after hard work in the classroom. By stressing academics first, Adrian student-athletes have earned distinctions including Academic All-American and Academic All-MIAA. Adrian's long tradition of successful student-athletes assures us that most students can play sports, participate in extra-curricular activities and still excel in demanding academic programs.
HOW WE COACH
The pride of the athletic department is reflected in a coaching staff that pursues excellence and encourages the student-athlete to reach high levels of performance. While primary emphasis is given to in-season competition, exceptional teams and individuals are given every opportunity to qualify and excel in post-season playoffs and tournaments. Coaches at Adrian stress the importance of teamwork, interpersonal communication and self-sacrifice. While they have impressive coaching credentials, they are educators first and would rather a student miss practice than compromise his or her educational goals.
HOW WE CARE
The sports medicine staff at Adrian provides student-athletes with the opportunity to compete in intercollegiate athletics in the safest environment possible. A certified athletic trainer and a student staff supervise all games and practices. The college also employs a nurse and a director of counseling services, while a team dentist and team physician are on call.
