COLES LITTLE LEAGUE TRY-OUTS FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
*What happens at a try-out?
Your child is evaluated on fielding, throwing, catching, and hitting.
Your child will rotate through different stations.
At first, your child will be hit ground balls. The managers will evaluate his/her fielding techniques. After your child fields the ball, they will throw the ball to a mock first base. Here, the mangers are evaluating the throw, as well as the catch by a player stationed at first base. Your child will then move to the batting cage, where he/she will be given a number of pitches to hit. We cannot stress enough, that the players are being evaluated the whole time they are at try-outs. If Little Johnny is goofing off while waiting for his turn, the managers will make a note of that. If Slamming Sam is frustrated and throws his glove down, a manager might see this too. Please speak to your child before a try-out and let him/her know how important it is.
*What should my child bring to a try-out?
Your child should bring a glove. He or she can bring a bat if they have a special bat they like to use, but this is not required. Your child should NOT wear cleats to an indoor try-out. The league will provide batting helmets and safety equipment.
*When / where are the try-outs?

*How many of these sessions does my child need to attend?
Your child needs to come to ONE session only.
*What is LEAGUE AGE?
A Baseball player’s League Age is that player’s age on April 30, 2009.
A Softball player’s League Age is that player’s age on December 31, 2008.
*Why does my child have to try-out?
This isn’t a ‘policy’ that Coles makes up. It is a procedure actually mandated by Little League Inc. Per the Regulations, if you want your child to be eligible for a competitive team, your child has to come to 50% of the try-out sessions. (See Regulations and PLAYING RULES Book, Regulation IV(f)).
If your child is league age 9-11, your child has to try out if they want to be considered eligible for a competitive draft into the Majors or Minor Division.
If your child is 8 years old, your child has to try out if they want to be considered eligible for a competitive draft into the Minor Division. Try-Outs give your child a chance to show the managers their skills.
*Who MUST attend try-outs?
If your child is of league age 9-12 and NOT already a member of a Major League Team, he or she MUST attend a try-out to be eligible for a Major League competitive draft. If your child is league age 9-11 and does NOT attend, he or she will not be eligible for a Major League Team and will be placed on a Minor League Team via a “hat pick”.
Beginning with the 2008 season, according to the change to Regulation V, all league age twelve year olds that do not have a District approved Major League Waiver on file with the league before the start of the Major Division draft will be assigned to a Major League Team. The assignment will be made either via the draft (if they attended tryouts), or via the blind draw “hat pick”.
*What is a draft?
A sports draft is the process by which teams select players not already contracted to any team.
*What is a “Hat Pick”?
Players who do not attend a try-out will have their names placed into a hat. At the draft, whenever a manager chooses to do so, he or she can blindly select a player from the hat. No manager knows who he/she will pick from the hat at any given moment.
*Will I find out where my child was selected in the draft?
Absolutely not.
This is confidential information that managers should not be speaking about. It should not matter where your child was selected. Cal Ripken was drafted in the 2nd Round (48th pick to be exact), but Nolan Ryan wasn’t picked until the 10th Round (295th pick). Both players ended up making it to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
*What if I can’t make it to any of these Try-Out sessions? The Board of Directors makes every effort to provide enough try-out sessions to accommodate all the members of our league. Only under dire circumstances will we ask 10 volunteers to come to a private try-out session. If you cannot make it to a scheduled try-out, and all efforts of carpooling have failed, please contact a Board Member. *How can I volunteer to help? The Board of Directors is always looking for dynamic, dedicated people to help us run the league. If you can donate a little of your time, please contact Robyn Horstkamp at PresidentColesLL@verizon.net. You don’t have to be a ‘board member’ to help – we promise! Remember – we do this for the kids. *Umpires Needed! Did you realize that the 60’ programs at Coles Little League are officiated by VOLUNTEER umpires? Every Major and Minor (AAA) game that our youngsters play should have two umpires. Our umpire crew set aside their evenings to umpire games for our kids – often times they do not even have a youngster playing on our league! They do not get paid for their time. Coles LL currently does not have enough men and women volunteering to umpire our games. If you would like to learn how to umpire, please come to one of the following indoor training sessions: Jan 25th from 2-4pm
Feb 8th from 2-4pm
Feb 22nd from 2-4pm All sessions will be held at 13200 Superior Court, Meadowbrook Woods. Remember the view from behind the plate is the Best Seat in the House!! |
