Little League Challenger Program
Challenger2007
Once again, Coles is sponsoring a CHALLENGER PROGRAM team for handicapped youngsters.  This Little League chartered "no fee" program provides the Little League Baseball experience to those who are not physically able to participate in the regular program.  The players, their buddies, and all of the volunteers who have participated in the past have had a great time.  If you have a youngster, ages five through high-school, who would be interested in playing, or if you can volunteer some of your time to these ballplayers, please contact Don or Josie VanWingerden at vanwingfamily@verizon.net.

The Challenger Team participated in the 3rd Annual Challenger Jamboree in Virginia Beach the weekend of May 9th-11th.

Opening Day 2008

Tim White was the Master of Ceremonies as Coles Little League held the official Opening Day Ceremony for its 28th Little League season on Saturday, April 19th.  The weather was glorious as the teams paraded onto the field.  Coles Supervisor, Marty Nohe, provided the day's motivational speech, noting that he and the Board of County Supervisors are committed to getting the Helwig Park project funded, so that Opening Day 2010 can be held at the new ballparks.  The league wants to thank all of the special guests, volunteers, parents and players who helped make this such a memorable event.

2008 Regular Season Pitching Regulation Changes
Announced by Little League on October 3rd:
  • A pitch limit for pitchers league age 7-8 has been added, with a maximum of 50 pitches per day. Previously, the limit for these ages was the same as for pitchers who were league age 9-10.
  • A provision has been added that prohibits a player who has been removed as a pitcher in a game from playing the position of catcher for the remainder of that day. This was a recommendation of Dr. Andrews and Dr. Fleisig, and is intended to further prevent overuse injuries. The position of catcher, according to Dr. Andrews and Dr. Fleisig, has the second-most overuse injuries, which can be acerbated by moving from pitcher to catcher in the same day. (However, moving from pitcher to any of the other seven positions, or from catcher to pitcher, apparently does not cause the same concerns.)
  • Pitchers league age 16 and under who deliver 41 or more pitches in a game must also have a game of rest, in addition to the number of days rest prescribed. Pitchers league age 17-18 who deliver 51 or more pitches in a game must also have a game of rest, in addition to the number of days rest prescribed. This enhancement is designed to help ensure that teams develop more pitchers, and to help ensure that scheduling anomalies do not result in undue advantages for some teams.
  • The “automatic” intentional walk was removed. If a pitcher wishes to intentionally walk a batter, he/she must do so by pitching four pitches intentionally outside the strike zone that are not struck at by the batter, and are called “balls” by the umpire. All such pitches will count in determining that pitcher’s pitch count.

Hellwig Park Complex Update

The Prince William County Park Authority Board met on July 11th to review an update to the Hellwig Park Master Plan to include the Coles ballfield complex, along with adding the provision that all of the Hellwig fields and courts will eventually be fitted with lights.  Members of Coles Little League were in attendance to speak in favor of accepting these revisions, along with a plea to try to expedite the building process.  The Park Authority Board will vote to accept these revisions at their meeting on August 8th.

As far as the ballpark construction schedule is concerned, the project is expected to be funded during the 2008-2009 budget cycle.  There are various estimates as to when construction will actually begin, and as soon as we have solid information regarding the start dates, we will forward them to you.  The good news is that we will not lose the time and money that we've already invested, as the architectural drawings are still good and the environmental studies will not need to be redone.  However, we need to make sure that our Supervisors and Park Authority representatives know that we are still here, and that this complex needs to stay as the number #1 upcoming park building project.

Opening Day 2007
It was a joyous, yet emotional day, as Coles Little League held its 2007 Opening Day Ceremonies.  The day marked the startup of spring baseball/softball in the mid-county area, while also celebrating the life and contributions of Ed Horstkamp.  After the Parade of Teams, Jordan Scott treated the membership by singing the National Anthem.  This was followed by a Moment of Silence for the victims of the Virgina Tech Tragedy, the Little League Pledge, and talks from Congressman Tom Davis and Coles District Supervisor Marty Nohe.  Don VanWingerden delivered the tribute to Ed, and the ceremonies were topped off by Ed's three boys simultaneously throwing out the first pitch.
