Coles Little League Complex Construction Is Well Underway
The construction project to build the new baseball/softball fields in Hellwig Park is well underway. The site has been cleared, levelled, and sculpted to resemble a baseball complex. Work has begun to deliver water and electrical service to the site as well. The light poles have already been erected (yes, lighted ballfields will be a reality), fences ARE in place, and the outfield sod has already been laid down. Initially, there will be four ball diamonds on the site. Two baseball diamonds with 225 foot fences, one softball diamond, and one ninety-foot baseball diamond. All four of these fields will have lights! Aditionally, there will be an electrical outlet behind the pitcher's mound on each field, and each dugout will have a roof. The project will include parking, lighted walkways, and at least one indoor restroom facility. Also, the landscaping is well underway. Currently, the league is working with the Park Authority to build a central structure for the Snack Bar, equipment storage, restrooms, and a meeting room. The projects may also include a restroom facility at/near the complex entrance for use by the soccer folks and general park patrons. Click here to view the Park Authority Master Plan for the park.
Also, the Prince William County Park Authority PR department has started a blog about new projects in the Park Authority; and they've just written a post about the Little League field construction behind Hellwig. Here’s the link.: http://www.pwcparks.org/PressRoom/ParkChatter/tabid/536/Default.aspx. Everyone is welcome to post comments, although the Park Authority folks will moderate them before they go up on the site.

Little League Challenger Program
Once again, Coles is sponsoring a CHALLENGER PROGRAM team for handicapped youngsters. This Little League chartered "no fee" program provides the Little League Baseball experience to those who are not physically able to participate in the regular program. The players, their buddies, and all of the volunteers who have participated in the past have had a great time. If you have a youngster, ages five through high-school, who would be interested in playing, or if you can volunteer some of your time to these ballplayers, please contact Don or Josie VanWingerden at vanwingfamily@verizon.net.
The Challenger Team participated in the 3rd Annual Challenger Jamboree in Virginia Beach the weekend of May 9th-11th.
