Baseball Bat Regulation Changes

Calvin Batting

Beginning in 2009, Little League Baseball has adopted the rule that non-wood bats used in ANY of the sixty-foot diamond baseball divisions must be printed with a BPF (Bat Performance Factor) of 1.15 or less.  When this rule takes effect in April, 2009, ANY bat without the marking, or one with a BPF marking greater than 1.15, WILL be removed from the game.  Also, as another reminder, at any time, the barrel of a bat used in any sixty-foot diamond program cannot exceed 2 1/4 inches in diameter.  Also, beginning with the 2009 Little League Baseball season, baseball bats with a diameter of 2 3/4 inches are no longer permitted for use in the Junior League Division.  Baseball bats with a 2 5/8-inch diameter are now the standard for all teenage baseball divisions (Junior, Senior and Big League).  The "minus-3" requirement - overall weight (in ounces) of a bat can be no more than three ounces below the overall length (in inches) of the bat (for example, a thirty-three inch bat cannot weight less than thirty ounces) - remains in effect in Senior and Big League Baseball divisions, but is NOT a requirement in Junior Baseball.

These changes apply only to bats used in the baseball programs.  Softball bat requirements remain unchanged for the 2009 season.

Coles Little League Complex Construction Begins

Hellwig Clearing
After passing through some procedural hurdles, Anderson Construction won the bid to clear the site at Hellwig Park that will soon become the new home of Coles Little League. Once the clearing is completed, the Park Authority will then issue a call for bids to build the three sixty-foot diamonds and the one ninety-foot diamond. There have been some changes to the original proposal, as a well and septic system has replaced the water and sewer lines, but the electrical line is still included. As of now, the project does not include a central building to house the Snack Bar, equipment and restrooms; and none of the fields are slated to have lights; but the hope is that the dollars for these amenities can be recovered through lower construction costs.

Coles Little League Umpire Schedule

UmpireSafeCall

Did you realize that the 60 foot baseball/softball programs at Coles Little League are officiated by VOLUNTEER umpires?  Our umpire crew sets aside their evenings and weekends to umpire games for our kids – often times they do not even have a youngster playing on our league!  They do not get paid for their time.  Every Major and Minor (AAA) game that our youngsters play should have at least two umpires, but Coles Little League currently does not have enough men and women volunteering to umpire so that we can meet that need.

It is one of the interesting aspects of the game that it needs at least one individual out on the field to act as the historian.  SAFE -- OUT -- BALL -- STRIKE.  The game needs folks who enjoy watching the action on the field to make a few comments about what did happen out there. Sure, there are a few rules that go along with these observations, but Coles is willing to teach you what you need to know about those rules. Make the commitment, and the league will provide the training and materials.

The current Coles Umpire schedule can be viewed by clicking here or on the headline.

Altered Batting Helmets May Not Be Used

Little League has passed the following rule regarding batting helmets:
Rule 1.16 and 1.17 (Baseball and Softball)
Warning!
Manufacturers have advised that altering helmets in any way can be dangerous.  Altering the helmet in any form, including painting or adding decals (by anyone other than the manufacturer or authorized dealer) may void the helmet warranty. Helmets may not be re-painted and may not contain tape, or re-applied decals, unless approved in writing by the helmet manufacturer or authorized dealer.
This rule will be strictly enforced by all league umpires. Any player wearing an unapproved, altered helmet will not be permitted to step into the batter's box.

Little League Challenger Program

Challenger2007
Once again, Coles is sponsoring a CHALLENGER PROGRAM team for handicapped youngsters.  This Little League chartered "no fee" program provides the Little League Baseball experience to those who are not physically able to participate in the regular program.  The players, their buddies, and all of the volunteers who have participated in the past have had a great time.  If you have a youngster, ages five through high-school, who would be interested in playing, or if you can volunteer some of your time to these ballplayers, please contact Don or Josie VanWingerden at vanwingfamily@verizon.net.

The Challenger Team participated in the 3rd Annual Challenger Jamboree in Virginia Beach the weekend of May 9th-11th.
