Colchester boys travel team wins championship
The 2012-2013 Colchester basketball 7th grade boys travel team won the Central Connecticut Travel League Championship on March 7. The team had a tremendous year, with an overall record of 28-8 and finished league play with a 17-4 record. The Bobcats finished the year as the second overall seed entering the tournament, and on Saturday beat Windsor in the semi-finals, 66-54, before a large crowd at Colchester Elementary School. The next day, they won the title beating an undefeated 20-0 Bloomfield team, 64-61.
The Bobcats played in three tournaments during the season, in addition to league play. They reached the championship game in each tournament and won the New Britain event.
"These kids have done an unbelievable job the entire year," Coach Dan Zbin said. "They played competitively all year and faced some of the toughest teams in the state. We knew the team would have a great season when we reached the finals of two pre-season tournaments and won one of them."
During the winter break, the team went to UMass Lowell and was exposed to teams from across New England. Over 150 teams participated in the tournament from grades 6-8. "We reached the finals of the tournament and it gave the team the confidence needed to finish the season knowing they can play with anyone competitively," Zbin said. "This group of players played as a team, sacrificed for each other, put forth amazing effort and never wavered from the goal we had to play competitive in every game and if the situation presented itself, win the title. I am so proud of how the team represented our town and appreciate the support of the CYBL, fans and parents throughout the year."
