For all remaining Playoff games, let's finish with a bang!
![]() |
Please note that the first 3 periods are played within the normal ice time slot and the additional 1/2 hour is only to be used if the game requires overtime. For example, an Atom game usually has a 1 & 1/2 hour slot, for the playoffs 2 hours will be allocated. As in a regular game, in the last 5 minutes of the 1 & 1/2 hour time, the game clock is dropped to 2 minutes of play. If the game is still tied after regulation, then you would go to the overtime rules.
If you have been assigned a playoff game this weekend, be sure to review the rules prior to the game. You may even want to confirm with the coaches during the pre-game handshakes that they are aware of the playoff regulations.
Work hard, have fun, and do the best that you can as we round off the season.

New Year, New Attitude?
Well we're into yet another year as the time just seems to fly by!
Perhaps some resolutions have been made that will see officials, players, coaches, and parents become more unified in their goals to make the on-ice product a better game? There have been some big gains in the progress of the rule emphasis initiative, but there have also been some setbacks.
It's an understandable challenge from the team side and the majority of them are adapting well. From the officiating perspective, it has been more challenging as referees struggle between effective game management and endless penalty calls. Some games the ref sounds like an NFL official, whistle going constantly and frustration brewing all around.
The one constant that is achieved regardless of the style is to keep it safe and fair. Even with making all applicable calls, there's a point where it has to be logical and necessary. Through supervision assisted recognition, officials will learn how to progress the style of the game with adapting the rule emphasis mandate, as well as ensure players get to play a full and meaningful game. Some refs may get away from the hooks, holds and interference a little more than the coaches and players would like, but if the game itself is not compromised and it is being conducted in a safe and fair manner for all involved, then hopefully the end result is a lesson learned for all towards the goals set out by Hockey Canada.
Anyone that watched the World Juniors or Mac's Midget tournament can see that officials have established a balance between the new standard and maintaining game management. (Some much better than others of course). Those that strayed from this goal quickly stood out as officials with no feel for the game itself and seemed to rob the players and fans of their money's worth.
All we can ask of our local officials is to continue the hard work towards establishing a safe and fair standard while blending in the rule emphasis, and soon enough you'll see the positive results of your efforts.
Well done Cochrane Refs and all the best for the remainder of the season.
2006/07 season underway!
We're well into the new season and things have slowly come around. Although adapting to the new rule emphasis concept is going well, it has been a struggle getting the mindset of the whole hockey community to embrace these ideas and there's still some way to go before we actually realize some of the goals of this initiative.
It has been a struggle for all officials as well, from all levels of hockey to adapt to the new standards imposed by Hockey Canada. There have been some really good discussions among many of the officials and with increased supervisions and mentorship, the 'New Game' will come around as the season progresses. The patience and support demonstrated by everyone as we all attempt to make this a better game would be very much appreciated.
Let's continue to have fun out there and also have a great season!

A few familiar faces will be coming back to town as John Hughes, coach of the Houston Jr Aeros Midget hockey club, is taking his team on a little tour through Western Canada and Cochrane is one of the stops. John's son Cory is a player on the team. John and his other son Joel used to be officials in the CRA a few years back.
The game is scheduled for Friday, March 21st from 3:30 to 5:30 pm at the Totem Arena and the officiating crew is Kendall Waiting as ref and Tim harper & Shayne Caron as the linesman.
Should be a good one. Be sure to stop by the rink and check it out if you have time.
