Cobalts Claim the Crown of Queen City
CincyFireworks
Champs 3 of last 5 years!

Cobalts took home the hardware Friday night in the Cincinnati City Championship Tournament with a 5-1 victory over the Cincinnati Hawks. Big offensive night from Brian Stoecklein, Mikey Taylor, and Mike Hatfield.

The pitching staff was once again impresive! This time it was young lefty Jacob Campbell going 5 innings and then Shannon Morgan finishing the last two of scoreless work. All told in the Tournament, the 'Balt Staff only gave up a measley 3 runs to the top teams in Greater Cincinnati....wow!!!

And, behind every great pitching performance is great dish work and Jason Cohill gets extra props for catching four-of-five games in the Tournament - tip of the cap to the iron man - especially in this heat.

Tip of the cap also to the Hawks who fought their way thru the deep loss-bracket to make it to the City Finals. Good luck to them as they represent Cincinnati in the Buckeye Championship Tournament in Akron!

So the City Champ Cobalts will take a well deserved break until the NABF Regionals begin Thursday night at Roselawn Park. Competition will be gunning for us, we know, so the 'Balts will have to bring it every inning of every game - sounds like fun!!!

Cobalts Championship Victory was their 30th of the 2008 campaign and stand 30-5.

Coach Retires But Cobalts Continue
Retired
Old & Retired, But Still Watching

As advertised, Mark "Coach" Dietz has officially retired as active manager of the Cincinnati Cobalts Semi Pro Baseball Club. I will now start over and establish the 4-Year Old "Semi Pro" Tee-Ball Cobalts (Lord help me).

But the Big 'Balts are in the capable hands of Player Coach Tom Taylor and will go into Year #23 with all guns blazing toward another NABF World Series title run.

The Cobalts are in the midst of setting their schedule within the competitive CRC Thursday/Sunday League.

Look for some new faces to be sprinkled in with the old cast of characters on this year's squad.

I would like to thank the thousands (yes, thousands) of Cobalt Players who donned our uniform and took the field for me over the span of 3 decades. It has been an honor and a lot of fun (mostly) to go to battle with all of you.

I'll be watching. And don't ever forget: Once a 'Balt, Always a 'Balt!!!

cheers,

Coach (out)

Cobalts Open '09 with a Double-Royale
double-royale
the Wrath of the Cobalts shall come down upon You!

Two quick 10-run rule victories for the Cobalts in their season opening double-header with the Cincinnati Royals.

Hits were many. Pitching stellar. Sunshine so excited he broke the new SEXTING laws and sent his stats with pictures....shewww!

Also, the New Dudes that Coach Taylor recruited sound so exciting!

Tuesday, June 2
Cobalts Shock the ZAPS with 2 More Wins
ZAPPED
ZAPPED...one of the all-time greatest movies ever!!!

In a Sunday DH, the Cobalts rolled over the Clermont Zaps behind the heavy lumber of TT, Stock, Daddy Hat, Josh morrow, and Mr Akers (HR).

Paully and Morgan showed the youngsters how the 'Balts do it Old School on the hill in game 1. Then New Dude Sunderman got the W in game 2.

Next up for the 4-0 Cobalts:

Receptions 8:45pm at Roselawn

Monday, June 8
Cobalts Notch Another 2 Victories
DetMackey

Bombs by Wags and TT lead the offense in 8-1 and 10-0 double header vistories on Sunday over the Cincinnati Creds.

Morgan and Wags split time in Game 1 on the hill and give up only 1 run.

Then Detective Mackey, err Keith Becker, returns to the hill to dominate in game 2.

Next up: Champions Academy, Weds 6:15 at CNE.

Tuesday, June 16
Cobalts Win 7th Straight Then Time For Natch Boats
NatchFloat
Tall Boys Float Good!

Wags goes Man-Ram with 6 RBIs in a 10-2 victory over the College Royals Sunday afternoon. Chris Sunderman gets the Win and El Vic-a-tor slams the door for the Hold (goat-bearded bone fissures and all).

Also seen at beautiful Hille Park were Deuce Hock, Danny Bell, and "Marge" Dietz....good to see the fellas!!!

In typical fashion this season, Game 2 was a total and complete wash-out. So, out came Coach's stash of Natches and good times were had by all.

Cobalts are 7-0 in 2009 with many games to make-up.

Wednesday, June 24
Cobalts a Perfect 10 with 3 More Wins
BillyBob
Miss Davis and Them Cobalts are 10's!!!

In the Thursday Night Opener, Ryan Martinez goes yard and Josh Parsons goes the distance to give the Cobalts an 8-3 victory over Clermont....both kids are solid parts of the new-look 'Balts.

Then in double-header action on Sunday, the Cobalts rolled to 16-0 and 7-1 victories.

So Cobalts are 10-0 going into the meat of the schedule. Some good tests are coming soon.

Monday, June 29
Cobalts Now 11-0 After Thursday Night Victory
VisionQuest
Shoop Says, "Not in my house, Wags!"

Cobalts not getting much quality competiton as they steamroll (13-3) another half-clothed squad who think singlets and cut shirts are cool on a diamond...Although they did let Wags know who was Boss!

With the season midway complete, the 'Balts look forward to seeing some of the regular CRC teams who have made the league what it's been for 30+ years - it can't come soon enough.

Tuesday, June 30
Another Sunday and Two More Victories for the 'Balts
farrah
Cobalts are old enough to appreciate!

Wags and Stock carry the lumber load in another lopsided couple of Wins on a hot Sunday.

And Sunshine Morgan does it all helping the Cobalts improve to 13-0.

Next Up:

Thursday night at 6:30 (Roselawn Park) against Yorkville.

Monday, July 6
Cobalts 14-0 after Win Over Yorkville
Late Monster
Monster was ready to play but didn't get a call

Cobalts get an 8-3 victory over Thursday night rivals of Yorkville. Wags gets the win. Stocklein goes deep. Nick-o Fritsch recalled to Emergency Cobalt Duty gets 2 RBI as the new 'Balt Skipper is asking himself where the 38 players with uniforms have all gone - and it's only first week of July!

Serious part of season coming up, boys. Find your way to the field!

Next up: Double-Header Thursday at Roselawn

6:30 Chiefs

8:30 Cheviot

Friday, July 10
Two Nice Thursday Night League Wins...Cobalts 16-0
Mikey Knievel
Lit'l T's road-rash all better now

Mikey "Crash" Taylor returned to action with a big night at the plate in a huge double-win on Thursday night.

Game 1 vs. Chiefs: Pitcher Tyler Snoke throws a 2-hit, no walks shutout as Cobalts Win 1-0 in a quick 90 minute affair. Mikey Taylor knocked in big bro Tom in the second inning and the rest was all youngster Snoke.

Game 2 vs. Cheviot Patriots: Cobalts need to come back from a 4-0 hole with big hits from again Mikey T and Brian Stocklein to get a 6-4 victory. Rick Rossell was the man on the hill in relief, throwing 4 shutout innings to get the "W"....nice to have Rick healthy again!

Cobalts match their all-time consecutive wins record (16)...Coach Taylor patching together a great season!!!

Wednesday, July 15
Sunday Sweep...Now 18-0
swept

Cobalts waste no time notching two more victories in Sunday League action. On a perfect Sunday for ball in the Natti, the Cobalts drop two 10-run rule bombs on the College Royals.

Cobalts are on a perfect 18-0 run with 2 more weeks of regular season action ahead.

Monday, July 20
Two More League Wins...Cobalts 20-0
hard to hold back this steam-roller
hard to hold back this steam-roller

Taking down the Red Sox and the Clermont Zaps in Thursday night League action puts the Cobalts in driver-seat for a Thursday League title and automatic NABF Regional Tourament bid.

At 20-0, the Cobalts are definitely on a roll with solid pitching and bats that have come alive.

Two League games this week against Receptions (8:30pm Thursday) and Hawks (6:30pm Friday @ Hille) will determine Cobalt's status.

Saturday, July 25
Cobalts Win League - Capture NABF Regional Berth
NABF
One Step Closer To Derby City Again

In front of a capacity crowd, including many Cobalt alumni (and coolers of Natch) Shannon Morgan goes all 7 innings in a solid 8-2 Cobalt victory over the Cincinnati Hawks. Akes, Wags and TT all with multiple RBIs and Rocky Curnayn with a multi-hit night.

The win, and undefeated regular season record, gives the Balts one of the 3 bids into the 8 team NABF Regional Tournament.

Now comes the City CRC Championship Tourney with top seeds Yorkville, Chiefs, and Cheviot all included in the weeklong annual affair...winner also gains a bid to the NABF.

Cobalts now 21-0!!!

Tuesday, July 28
City Tournament Begins - Cobalts Get A Big Zit
Get it? a Zit!
Get it? a Zit!

Cobalts open the City Championship with a 9-3 win over the Lugnuts (Sunderman gets Win, TT and Hat both with HR).

Then in game two, the Cincinnati Creds put the first blemish on the 2009 season for the Balts. Unable to overcome a quick 7-0 deficit, the Cobalts put themselves in dire-straits for advancing from Pool Play.

Easy to say the Boys looked past the much improved Creds, but bottom-line: an "L" is an "L" and hopefully a wake-up call for the upcoming NABF Regionals.

Next up: Yorkville.

Wednesday, July 29
Paully Makes Things Right Again...Cobalts Advance with 2-1 Win Over Yorkville
Paully5th
Are you getting a big lead over there?

A mild manored 6'5" Elementary Teacher by Day; Mean Side-arrrm Slinger by night - Paully still's got it! He's been throwing lights out for the Cobalts for over 18 years. Tuesday night was no different as the big right-hander holds a tough Yorkville team in-check for a 2-1 victory in City Tournament play.

And, the Balts catch a break with the Lugnutz laying 7 runs on the Cincy Creds - so Cobalts advance to Championship round!

Next up: Chiefs in Semi-Finals (if it ever stops raining)

Cobalts are now 23-1 in 2009

Monday, August 3
Rain Finally Ends - Cobalts Bow Out of City

After 4 straight nights of rainouts, the Chiefs and Cobalts finally took the field and, as earlier in the season, the pitchers stole the show. Morgan threw great - giving up only 2. Unfortunately the Balts bats were silenced by 11Ks from the Chiefs tough wrong-hander and go down 2-0. Congrats to Chiefs who go on to claim this year's City Title and get the 2nd automatic bid to NABF Regionals.

The Draw for Tournament pairings is Wednesday night.

NABF Regionals begin Thursday afternoon.

Thursday, August 6
NABF Regionals Begin

Jet Box Comes Loaded - Wins Regional then World Series
NABF
We need another 2006!!!

Cobalts opened the Regional Tournament exactly how they didn't need to - with an extra inning, pitcher eating, nail-biting, Loss. Chiefs take advantage of late inning miscues and walks to take game 1 of Pool Play.

Then the Cobalts wheel out the crafty veterans.

Paully takes the hill and after a rough first inning, throws a complete game win over Frankfurt Hogs. Tom Taylor leads offensive burst with 2 HRs.

Then Morgan's turn - he goes all 7 in a big win over Xenia Trophy....Cobalts Advance to Final 4!

Squaring off against Portland, IN Rockets on Saturday in the Semi Finals, the Cobalts run dry on arms and go down in defeat...'Balts done with another 3rd place NABF Regional Tournament finish and falling short of trip to Derby City.

Jet Box beats Portland and goes to Louisville eventually winning their second title in 3 years.
