History of CoBALTS

Throughout the Club's history many have asked "Why Cobalts?" and "What is a Cobalt?"

The CoBALT Baseball Club originally began as the Eastside Eagles. But after one year we renamed and reorganized as The CoBALTS thanks to Chris Sabo, the All Star third baseman for the Cincinnati Reds. The slightly eccentric Sabo was a silent sponsor of the team but demanded a "cooler name," something "nuclear" he said. So we became the CoBALTS in 1988 and Sabo even suited up for us in the 1995 season during a rehab period from injury. Sabo remains a friend of the program and we hope someday his back injury allows him to wear the CoBALT uniform again.

The CoBALTS were founded by Mark Dietz with the help of many who still play today: Jeff Dietz, John Christmann, John Mederer, Jake Smith and Bo Rooster Stineman. The team roster was filled mostly with Eastside Cincinnati, former high school stars, some with college experience. But we realized quickly that the CoBALTS needed a higher talent level to compete in the Cincinnati amateur leagues. Today, most roster members have played Division I or II baseball and the CoBALTS consistently rank as a top team in Cincinnati Semi Pro Baseball.

The CoBALTS have been proud to offer many athletes the chance to continue playing baseball at a high level while not greatly interfering with the growth of their professional work and family lives. We believe it is a gift to be able to play and we thank all of our sponsors over the years.
