Cougar Classic girls hockey tournament gaining in popularity
http://www.patriotledger.com/sports/x889929691/Cougar-Classic-girls-hockey-tournament-gaining-in-popularity
By Eric Mchugh
ROCKLAND —
The more the merrier ... but only up to a point.
The Cougar Classic, billed as the largest girls high school hockey tournament in the state, has mushroomed from a cozy four-team get-together six years ago to its current 12-team setup.
Organizer Todd Jacobson, head coach of Notre Dame Academy, said he has a waiting list of six or seven teams that want to get in on the action, but he won’t expand to 16 unless he can find a second ice sheet.
As it was, Tuesday’s first round took over Rockland Ice Rink for almost 10 hours. There were six games, five of them decided by a total of seven goals.
“It’s a good way to end your season if you don’t qualify for the (MIAA) tournament,” Jacobson said of the Cougar’s allure. For teams that have already punched their playoff ticket, Jacobson said, the Cougar’s format (overtimes, shootouts) is a good chance to “play state tournament-type games heading into the state tournament.”
Host Notre Dame got the Early Bird Special (8 a.m. faceoff) and rode a third-period goal from junior forward Morgan Sharry of Scituate to a 1-0 win over Newton North. Freshman Jessica Mitchell (Norwell) made 11 saves for the shutout.
NDA (6-8-5) will play Ursuline in the White Division final Thursday at 3:05 p.m. at Rockland Ice Rink.
In other tournament action:
WHITE DIVISION
Ursuline 5, Marshfield 3
The Rams, who replaced Everett in this year’s tournament, couldn’t dig out of a 3-0 first-period hole.
Katie Conlon scored twice, and Erin Shea added a goal for Marshfield.
BLUE DIVISION
Sandwich 4, Bay View (R.I.) 2
Sandwich jumped out to a 3-1 first-period lead and held on. Katie Flynn, Megan Congro, Maggie Layo and Claire Gauthier scored for the winners.
RED DIVISION
Milton 2, King Philip 1
Sophomores Niki Cremmen and Erin Higgins scored for Milton. Erin Carmody, Hannah O’Leary and Julie Rush had assists.
Falmouth 5 Mt. St. Joseph/Matignon 4 (OT)

Late Goal Saves Ducks From Loss
ROCKLAND — The Fontbonne Academy girl’s hockey team proved that it’s OK to be a little late to the dance.
Erin McLoughlin’s goal with 32 seconds remaining in the game salvaged a 2-2 tie with Notre Dame Academy of Hingham at Rockland Ice Rink on Saturday morning.
“We are happy with the tie to come back at the end,” said Ducks’ head coach Bob Huxley. “We had a lot of opportunities.”
There were plenty of opportunities for the Ducks, but most of those chances were coming up empty. It also didn’t help that the Cougars’ freshman netminder Jessica Mitchell was doing a little bit of everything to keep the puck out of the net.
Huxley noticed that the freshman was staying low and leaving a hole up high to score, and that’s exactly where McLoughlin went. The Ducks had the goalie pulled and only sported a 5-on-4 advantage, because of a penalty of their own that wiped out a two player advantage, but McLoughlin found a seam in the middle and snapped a wrist-shot just under the cross bar to earn the tie.
“I saw her go low real quick, so I just put it in the top corner,” said McLoughlin. “She finally went down quick and I popped it right up there.”
It was a struggle for the Ducks for most of the game. The power play unit went 0-for-6 on the day and the Ducks never had a lead
Emily Lafond tipped home a Morgan Sharry centering pass on the Cougars second shot of the game at 9:21 of the first period.
The Ducks tried to mount pressure, but the Cougars hung three defenders back and made life miserable for Taylor Shepherd and her linemates.
“We did give up a decent amount of shots, but if you look at where they came from they didn’t have a lot of point blank, slot opportunities,” said Cougars’ head man Todd Jacobson.
The Ducks finally got on the board when Shepherd buried a nice feed from Michelle Barrett and Elizabeth Coleman.
The Cougars did a nice job of blocking shots all morning, and when Meghan Collins’ big blast from the point was blocked by a Cougar defenseman, Sharry gathered the puck and scored on the breakaway at 9:48 of the second period.
Lan Crofton got the start in net for the Ducks and made 11 saves, while Mitchell had to make 23 stops.
Fontbonne now moves to 8-1-3 on the season.

Roundup: St. Mary's girls hockey team settles for tie
By Joyce Erekson / The Daily Item
The St. Mary's girls hockey team nearly escaped with a win Thursday, settling for a 2-2 tie against Notre Dame of Hingham at Rockland.
The teams were tied, 1-1, heading into the final minute of play when Bridget Donovan scored what looked to be the game-winning goal off a face-off (Sabrina Iannetti and Angela Dandreo had the assists).
The tide turned in a hurry, however, when the Spartans were called for a penalty with 18 seconds remaining.
St. Mary's was one second away from escaping with the win when Notre Dame's Emily Lafond knocked in a loose puck in front of the net for the tie.
"They outworked us most of the game," St. Mary's coach Frank Pagliuca said. "They beat us to the loose pucks ... We've got to correct a lot of things (before facing Hingham) Saturday."
St. Mary's opened the scoring on a goal a little more than eight minutes into the game by Gina Beth Manganiello (Ann Marie Manganiello had the assist). At Rockland Ice Rink, junior forward Emily Lafond of Hanover scored a power-play goal with 1 second left as Notre Dame Academy (3-3-1) tied three-time defending Div. 1 state champion St. Mary’s (Lynn).

Junior forward Elle Leong (Cohasset) tied the game at 1-1 in the first period, and freshman goaltender Jessica Mitchell (Norwell) made 33 saves.
St. Mary’s (4-0-2), which hasn’t lost since the 2007 state tournament, hosts Hingham High on Saturday night.

While we respected St. Mary’s, our kids fought tooth and nail with them from the first drop of the puck until the puck went in with no time left at the end.”

Sad Week!
While the weather has been getting colder and the excitement of the upcoming hockey season is only 38 days away, there has been some sad news this past week. NDA JV Basketball coach and former BC High hockey player Sean Arruda passed away at the young age of 44. Former Oliver Ames HS, UMass Lowell and professional hockey player Craig Charron lost his battle with stomach cancer this week at the age of 42, and 15 years ago this week Travis Roy after skating for only 11 seconds in his first collegiate shift at BU was paralyzed after an awkward fall into the boards at Walter Brown Arena. So as we are enjoying our seasons or getting ready for our upcoming high school season lets take a moment to remember some of our hockey friends.

Carly Birolini scored with 2:52 to play to give the Breakers the lead back 5-4 but the Bandits would answer scoring with 1:49 to play and again with 56 seconds left to take the lead 6-5. The Bandits would add an empty net goal with 8 seconds left to seal the victory 7-5. The Breakers are now (0-1-0 overall, 0-1-0 EHF, 0-0-0 NEGHL) and next play on Saturday at 5:00pm at the Hobomock Arena in Pembroke vs the Boston Jr. Eagles.

Breakers Coach Bob Hayden To Run For Office!
Hanover man adds his name for GOP primary
By John P. Kelly
Posted Jun 18, 2010 @ 04:07 AM
HANOVER —
Robert E. Hayden III is running for Congress with no political experience and a paltry balance in his campaign piggy bank. Republican leaders, he said, won’t return his calls.
“I might be the skunk at the garden party,” Hayden said.
Underdog or not, Hayden, 42, a lawyer, hockey coach, and Hanover father of three, said he is simply too riled up to sit still.
“The people in D.C. aren’t listening,” Hayden said last week at a coffee shop in Boston, across the street from his office at the state Department of Public Utilities.
Angered by government “bailouts and handouts,” Hayden said, his goals include reducing federal spending, repealing the recent healthcare reform law and fighting an ideological shift in Washington, which he says is “making us too much like Europe.”
Hayden faces significant challenges. The last Republican to announce his candidacy in the 10th District race, Hayden is outmatched financially – especially by former state Treasurer Joseph Malone of Scituate and state Rep. Jeffrey Perry of Sandwich, whose campaigns said they have raised more than $250,000 apiece.
Ray Kasperowicz, an accountant in Cohasset, raised $10,220 by the end of March, a campaign finance report shows.
The four candidates will compete in the September primary. Two Democrats are also vying to succeed retiring U.S. Rep. William Delahunt. They are Norfolk County District Attorney William Keating and state Sen. Robert O’Leary.
Mike Joy, a longtime friend and supporter, said Hayden’s lack of political experience will prove to be either his greatest weakness or greatest strength.
“I told him, ‘I think your main focus should be that you’re a regular guy trying to get into this office,’” said Joy, 40, a Hanover resident and auditor at State Street Corp. “He’s not looking to boost his career in politics; he doesn’t have one. He wants to be a vote for the people.”
At the Department of Public Utilities, Hayden said he enforces the state’s “Dig Safe” law, which regulates excavations on public and private property. Before that, he worked as a prosecutor for the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office.
On the South Shore, Hayden said he is best known for his involvement in hockey. He runs Hockey Jump Start, a training clinic for children in Rockland and Kingston. After graduating from Plattsburgh State College in New York, Hayden said he played professionally for a season in Holland and later coached at the University of Massachusetts-Boston.
Last week, Hayden said his campaign raised $2,300 at a kickoff fundraiser attended by about 20 friends at the home of his late grandfather in Hull. His wife, Patricia, is the campaign’s treasurer. His father, Robert Hayden, is campaign manager.
The senior Hayden, arguably, has more name recognition than his son. Hayden’s father served as Massachusetts undersecretary of public safety, assistant general manager of safety for the MBTA, and is a former chief of the Lawrence Police Department. In 2001, he competed on NBC’s defunct reality show “Lost,” set in the mountains of Bolivia.

Brooks Laich One Of The Good Guys!
By Greg Wyshynski
Two weeks ago, Mary Ann Wangemann ordered a Washington Capitals jersey for her hockey-crazed 14-year-old daughter Lorraine: Forward Brooks Laich, No. 21, whose blue-collar approach to the game has made him a fan favorite.
The same Brooks Laich who was emotionally devastated on Wednesday night, after the Capitals were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs in a Game 7 loss at home to the Montreal Canadiens. Washington was the NHL's best regular-season team, and failed to advance after blowing a 3-1 series lead. It's been called the worst series defeat in franchise history.
Laich, so often the team's unofficial locker room spokesman, didn't speak to reporters after the game.
The same Brooks Laich who, on the night his season ended prematurely, stopped when he saw Wangemann and her daughter stranded alone on Washington D.C.'s Roosevelt Bridge and then fixed a flat tire on their 2008 Acura while cars sped past him.
"You know how some athletes can strike you as real jerks? I think [the Capitals] are genuinely good people. He could have driven by like everyone else did, and he didn't," said Wangemann, who was headed home to Ashburn, Va. after watching the Capitals fall in Game 7.
"I was so touched by what he did. I was praying. I was that worried [about our safety]. The fact that he came up out of nowhere ... he was like an angel that night."
It was a scene reminiscent of when New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi stopped to help a motorist who crashed her car into a wall on the Cross Country Parkway in suburban Westchester County -- hours after the Yankees has won the World Series in Oct. 2009.
As first reported by Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post, Wangemann and her daughter were driving back from the game when their car hit a pot hole and the tire went flat:
So Mary Ann pulled over to the side of the bridge, and called Triple A. They said they had a heavy volume of calls, and that they weren't sure how long it would take to send help. Mary Ann and Lorraine, still wearing their Caps gear, got out of the car and watched the traffic whiz by.
"We were getting a little spooked," she told me. "You feel pretty vulnerable right there."
Finally, an SUV slowed down ahead of them and pulled over. And then Brooks Laich got out and asked if he could help.
Wangemann was eager to share her story about Laich after Game 7's undeniable depression.
"I felt like there was such negative news about the Caps that I just wanted people to know what the real players were like. It was such a nice thing for him to do," she said. "Here's a player that wasn't having the best of days. He could have driven by like everyone else did, and he didn't."
Laich emerged from his car wearing an expensive-looking suit and walked over to the mother and daughter, both having donned Capitals sweatshirts on a chilly evening. Lorraine had become a Caps fan two-and-a-half years ago; her mother began following the team last year, the first time she had ever taken an interest in sports fandom.
They both recognized Laich. "The first words out of his mouth were, 'I'm sorry we lost.' And he stayed with us for an hour," said Wangemann.
Wangemann simply wanted him to stay with them until help arrived, but Laich asked if they had a spare tire. He got down on the ground and began working on the car.
The bridge carries I-66 and U.S. Highway 50 over the Potomac River to D.C. Wangemann said changing the flat there was "putting his life at risk."
He kept calling the ground "the ice," she said; as in, "We have to get this tire off the ice." Her car also had a special widget on the tire that made removing it difficult. She said Laich exclaimed at one point, "'Wow, it really protects your tire here but it's a pain in the neck to get off.'" At another point, the car fell off the jack, and Laich placed it back on.
After about 40 minutes, the tire was changed and Laich offered some parting advice to take it slow and stop to call AAA if anything rattled.
Wangemann's last words to Laich: "Can I hug you?"
The NHL player hugged Wangemann, and then hugged her daughter, who immediately updated her Facebook status with "he hugged me."
They expect they'll see Laich again at one of the many fan functions the Capitals hold during the season and into the offseason. Wangemann is considering asking for a specific autograph.
"Next time I'll bring the tire. He'll know who we are."

Olympic Hockey Springboard To New Fans of the Game!
Watching the great hockey over the last couple of weeks whether it be the women's or the men's olympic tournament. While the womens tournament was pretty much known from the start that a US-Canada gold medal match was almost a guarantee. The mens tounrament was loaded with what I felt was 7 teams that could have won medals. Going into the men's tourney it was Canada and Russia as the top of the draw with the USA, Czech Republic, Sweden (06 Gold), Finland (06 Silver) and upstart offensively talented Slovakia. While only the US and Canada had teams made solely of NHL players the rise in the play of the KHL (Russian Professional League) and named stars like Peter Forsberg playing professionally in Sweden and Jaromir Jagr playing professionally in the Czech Republic has brought those leagues closer to the NHL than many had ever expected. The game globally is getting better and some of the better European stars are seeing the same type of money back home that they would see here in North America. Every starting goaltender on the top 8 teams in the olympics was an NHL goalie, and many of the backups were as well. The speed of the games was more evident than ever. It was like watching all star teams actually playing hockey instead of the one game a year the NHL puts its stars on display to showcase nothing what is seen during the rest of the year. The elimination of this years all star game was a brilliant idea for the NHL. Putting forth a great olympic tournament with quality teams and players was never more evident than when I read today's articles on how 16.6 million Canadians watched this game! That is half of their TV viewing population as well as 26.7 million Americans were watching as well. That is 1 in 3 people who own TV sets. That is amazing in a sport that is so much relegated to the Northeast, Upper Midwest, the Rockies and some sporatic cities as Raleigh, Dallas, and parts of Florida (many areas where people from the north have settled). This is just what Hockey has needed a boost from the womens game and mens game to hopefully bring in new fans to a sport that is in much need of a boost. I think it was never more evident then after regulation of the US-Canada game I got a phone call from a close friend (whose a big Football guy) and his first words to me were "are you watching this?" or the co worker who is a big baseball guy whose first words to me on Monday morning were "did you see that game yesterday?" If you had asked me 12 years ago when the NHL players were getting ready to take to the ice in Nagano Japan what I had thought of NHL players playing in the Olympics I would have gone on for hours on how I felt it was a bad idea. No more Miracle on Ice teams, no more Ray Leblanc playing amazingly for the US in the 1992 olympics as he was winding down a lifelong minor league career. No longer would there be young college guys like Ed Olczyk in 1984 in Calgary, or BC's Brian Leetch in 1988 in Sarajevo, or the 8 BC, BU, and Harvard players on the 1992 team that lost in the Bronze medal game in Albertville France. I must say I've changed my tune after these olympics it's nice to see the worlds best on display for the entire world to enjoy. It's also nice to see fringe fans jumping on board as well. Here's my message to them "Stay awhile there is a lot more where that came from!!"

Eagles Squirt C Finishes Strong Heading Into Playoffs!
On Saturday the Eagles took on Coastal Stars and after falling behind 3-0 in the first the Eagles swarmed the Stars net for the next two periods but couldn't break the stars goaltender and fell 3-0. On Sunday the Eagles took on Duxbury-1 a team they lost to on Christmas Eve. Looking to avenge the loss earlier in the year the Eagles took a 4-0 lead into the second period before Duxbury came roaring back to even the game at 4-4. In the third the game was even until the final 5 minutes when the Eagles scored 3 unanswered to win 7-4. The Eagles finish the regular season (20-3-2 Overall) and finished first in the Yankee Conference heading into next weekends playoff game against the same Duxbury-1 team at 10:30am at the Hobomock Ice Arena in Pembroke.

Anthony Chighisola's College Hockey Blog!
Well since the last time I left you a ton has happened. We have had several of our players get suspended for one week for off the ice incidents, a new player transfer in from a program that cut him, and set numerous records. Our team has only been around for about 7 or 8 years I believe and that's why small accomplishments are happening. We set a record for most in conference wins this year with three. We have one game left this year before playoffs which could make it four. Also i personally have set two records this year. One is most goals in a single season and right now i have 17 and second is most points in a single season and i have 32. These really mean alot to me and are nice to have but would rather have more wins then these accolades. Also another big thing that has happened is that we are going to have home ice advantage for the first round again this year which we are really excited about. The last record that was broken was my linemate Roscoe Sweeney. I held the record for most points by a freshman and he broke that and currently has 29 points. Roscoe and I have a real special connection on the ice and are number 4 and 6 in the league in points.
Right now in the season the practices are short and to the point and the games are really spread out. injuries are no longer a factor because we have been playing once a week. It is a little more boring but my body really is liking all of the extra rest. And the fact that we dont need any conditioning anymore is a big plus too (haha)! The main focus seems to be strategies and our own defense because the past five games we have scored 15 goals. And my line has scored 13 of them which shows that we need to get secondary scoring so our coach is focusing on alot of shooting drills in practice. Also our last game gives us a chance to sweep a team in our conference which would be a first for our young program.
Another thing going on right now is our recruiting and getting ready for next year. We are looking at some real good players that could add to our depth and also are trying to improve our goaltending. But one big thing has occured during recruiting. We wanted a player who is a great talent but he cant come here. He fooled around in high school and couldnt even get a 1500 on the SATs and this is something that is considered a minimum for most colleges. If you think you can slack of in high school your wrong and this player is in some real trouble because he thought hockey could do it all. Well I have to get some sleep before A.M practice tomorrow but I hope to write a little sooner next time--Tony C.

Tournament now has 12 teams, three brackets
By Drew Bonifant

Last update Feb 17, 2010 @ 03:31 AM
There are new teams this year, playing under a new format. But in the sixth edition of the Cougar Classic, Todd Jacobson is looking to maintain the same old success.
The girls hockey tournament, overseen by Jacobson, the coach of host Notre Dame Academy, kicked off Tuesday with a new look and a new pool of competitors.
Twelve teams, up from the traditional eight, played first-round games at Rockland Ice Rink. Milton High defeated Notre Dame, 5-3, in the first game, followed by Hingham beating Everett, 11-0; Sandwich blanking Newton North, 3-0; St. Mary’s Bay View (R.I.) edging Duxbury in a shootout, 4-3; Ursuline topping Falmouth, 7-1; and Mount St. Joseph’s/Matignon shutting out King Philip, 3-0.
According to Jacobson, the increase in teams is a sign of the tournament’s popularity, which has grown since the contest’s first year as a four-team tilt.
“I’ve had a waiting list for a couple of years now,” he said. “All eight teams from last year returned, and I had a lot of teams asking to get in. We were able to work out some time with the rinks to play more games, and that was the biggest hurdle.”
The newcomers are St. Mary’s, Everett, Falmouth and Newton North, and their addition has forced a change to the bracket as well. Jacobson split the teams into red, white and blue brackets, which will each have their own champion, and which are designed to be as evenly matched as possible.
According to the competing coaches, the alterations put a new excitement into the tournament.
“It’s a great tournament, and I know teams want to be in it,” said Duxbury coach Friend Weiler. “It’s fabulous competition at the end of the year, and it’s great for girls hockey.”
Hingham coach Tom Findley, whose team got four goals from Courtney Igo in the victory, echoed Weiler’s sentiments.
“It allows more teams to compete and win their bracket. It’s a nice touch,” he said. “Todd’s done a great job. He gets the teams together that he thinks will be on the same playing field.”
The new format paid immediate dividends, with two notable first-round games. St. Mary’s got by on a 2-0 edge in the shootout, and Brianna Kelly scored all five goals in Milton’s victory.
“This was a real breakout game for her,” said Wildcats coach Maggie Radley. “The players have started to click and jell. Hopefully this carries over.”
As well-received as the expansion has been, limited availability at Rockland Ice Rink has Jacobson thinking 12 teams may be a good number to stop at – at least for now.
“It has to be under one roof,” he said. “If I could expand it, I would. The interest is there, without a doubt.”
In the white division Thursday, Notre Dame and Newton North will play the consolation at 8 a.m., and Milton and Sandwich will play the championship at 1:40 p.m.
In the red division, Falmouth and King Philip will play the consolation at 9:25 a.m., and MSJA/Matignon and Ursuline will play the championship at 12:15 p.m.
In the blue division, Everett and Duxbury will play the consolation at 10:50 a.m., and Hingham and St. Mary’s will face off in the final at 3:05 p.m.

RINDGE, N.H. Chighisola piled up four points on two goals and two assists in the only action of the week for the Ravens, a 6-2, home-ice victory over Southern New Hampshire on Saturday night. Anthony Chighisola's College Hockey Blog!
Anthony has given us his latest take on life in College Hockey.
Well since i last wrote alot has gone on with the team. We had our christmas break which was very short because we were back playing hockey on the 27th of december and our team truly hit a rough patch. We went to buffalo for two games against buffalo state and lost both games even though we out played them in certain periods we could notput together a full 60 minutes. Then we came back after this road trip which was an eight hour drive each way and seemed to be pretty exhausted. We beat the University of new england which was exciting but have just lost our last 2, becker, and southern new hampshire. Right now my line is clicking really well. We are the only line that has stayed the same since about the 4th game in the season. I lead the team with 23 points while the freshman center on my line has 19 and the other wing has 10. We really gel together well and we are also the first power play unit. Our biggest problem right now seems to be our goaltending. Along with this we struggle when we actually take the lead. We have a tendancy to ease up after we go ahead rather than put more pressure on the other team while there morale is down. Right now we have 5 games left in the season and 4 of them are conference games that we most definitely need to win no matter what. Tomorrow we have a non conference game vs. Plymouth state which should be a tough test but im sure if we play our game that we can win. And just so people know about the academic side of things, we had our best defenseman as a freshman come back to school for second semester and he is unable to play due to his academics. He ended up with a .78 gpa while the minimum is a 2.0. I myself ended up with a 3.4 . This just shows that no matter how good you are, school comes first. Tony C.

Duxbury welcomes back All-Scholastic goalie Julia Hannon, who pitched 10 shutouts and posted a 0.92 GAA. Briana Connolly is the Green Dragons top scorer, while Taryn McCall and Martha Findley quarterback the defense.
Bridget Nestor and Bethany Ramsey anchor the defense for Notre Dame Academy (Hingham), center Kelly Coleman is a spectacular two-way player, and Lizz Lanata and Jen Gerhard lead the offense until top scorer Morgan Sharry (14-17-31) returns from a wrist injury.

Anthony Chighisola's College Hockey Blog!
Anthony has given us his latest take on life in College Hockey.
Well alot has happend since we last talked. Our team is now 3-4-1 and we are 1-0-1 in the conference. We have been playing really well of late, we beat stonehill for only the second time in our schools history and we also gave up the lead against WNEC but with only 4 minutes left we tied it up and went ahead by two goals. I am now on first line with two freshman and we have been on fire as of late. The last 3 games we are a plus 8 and i myself have had 7 points just in the past two games. For the first time in a long time our team seems very good and we are beating up on conference opponents who are ahead of us in the pre season rankings. Also right now i pretty much play hockey go to school and sleep. It is really draining and around 2 oclock all i want to do is take a nap. We have had two players grab the freshman of the week so far and also had a goalie even grab goalie of the week. And i myself have been on the weekly honor roll 3 of the last 4 weeks. This week we have had a full week of practices as we prepare for our game vs. Assumption on Saturday. This gives us alot of time to get our legs back seeing as we just had out turkey day break. Plus we were all able to go and scout the game the other night which was St. Anslems against Assumption. After this game we have two more games next week and then we have finals before we go home for christmas vacation. The neat thing about the week of finals is that there are no sports occuring during this time frame which allows everyone to heal as well as study for the finals which end up being about one third of your semester grade. On the last note, right now many people are struggling trying to jockey hockey and academics. Our coach has already sat a couple of players due to poor performance in the class room. I can't stress enough that college is academics first where ever you go. Coaches don't care if you are the star player....Tony C.
Anthony currently leads the Franklin Pierce team in Scoring with 8 goals and 6 assists in 9 games, but as you can read below the Team being successful and the Academics are obviously more important than personal statistics. Nice Job Anthony and best of luck to the whole Franklin Pierce team.

Mr. Gili's organization is selling jersey/hockey bag patches to raise money to be donated directly to the families of fallen soldiers. I couldn't think of a better cause to get behind. I have attached the link to Mr. Gili's site and take some time to really look through his site it is really amazing what they have done and I couldn't be happier to help be just a small part of it. Bay State Breakers Girl's Program Featured On USA Hockey Online Magazine!
| Bay State Breakers girls’ program takes off |
|
November 3, 2009
By Mike Scandura
Special to USAHockey.com
To listen to Bay State Breakers director of hockey operations Tom MacDonald, it’s easy to get the impression that the Massachusetts-based girls’ program has the best of both worlds.
“We have a grassroots philosophy,” said MacDonald, now in his seventh year with the organization. “We’re not a win-at-all-costs program. But we do keep score for a reason. We implement winning as part of the philosophy.”
Good point, considering that in recent years the Breakers have won two 12-Under and two 14-U Eastern Hockey Federation championships. And last March, the 16-U Tier I team captured the Massachusetts state title.
“Our higher level teams are competing nationally,” MacDonald said. “And the 14s and 12s are also vying for national status. They’re not only competing but they’re winning.”
Along with 12-U Tier I coach Chris Donato, MacDonald helped design what they consider is a program best suited for girls of all ages.
The basic tenants are as follows:
- Consistent ice time
- Motor skill development
- Quality competition (the Breakers play in the New England Girls’ Hockey League as well as the Eastern Hockey Federation)
- Positive environment
“We felt we needed a formula like that in order to grow the program,” MacDonald said. “Plus, through the years, I’ve been a big believer that you’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with.
“Over the years we’ve added the likes of Tom and John Findley, who are both coaches at Hingham High School, Scott Shaunessy, who was an All-Hockey East defenseman at Boston University, Todd Jacobson, who’s the head coach at Notre Dame Academy and Chris Vlachos, who was an All-American at Salem State.
“The likes of these gentlemen,” continued MacDonald, “has helped us build this program to the point where there are two teams at each level.”
As MacDonald indicated, the Breakers field teams at the 10-U, 12-U, 14-U, 16-U and 19-U levels. The Tier I teams are denoted by the color green, while the Tier II teams are denoted by the color white.
“Our goal is to create the best positive environment that will in turn create passion,” MacDonald said. “With passion, you get long-term, positive results.
“We’ve also implemented a cross-ice program which really starts at the grassroots level. That kicked off in the 2003-04 season.”
George Sullivan founded the all-boys’ Breakers in 1988 and a girls program was added in 1999.
“The old Metropolitan Boston Hockey League was talking about girls’ hockey,” MacDonald said. “The Breakers were one of the first to add girls at the 12-U level.
“The way I got involved was I grew up with George, who was one of my coaches. He almost was like a second father to me. And I grew up with John Cashman, who’s the owner of the Rockland Rink.”
According to MacDonald, Sullivan was on the verge of retiring and Cashman was looking for a program for his rink, The Bog.
“Because I unified George and John I got a job out of it with 13 teams, 11 for boys and two for girls [12-U and 14-U],” said MacDonald, who’s also the assistant men’s coach at Curry College. “Since then, we’ve grown to the point where we have 23 boys’ teams and 10 girls’ teams.
“Overall, this season, there are about 200 girls in that program. And all of our girls are from the south shore. There aren’t any ‘outside’ girls.”
MacDonald explained that, during tryouts, girls are evaluated and placed on teams based on ability.
If, for example, a girl is at the age 14 level but her skills are at the point where she could play up a level, she’s placed on a 16-U team.
“We’re talking about overall development,” MacDonald said.
MacDonald couldn’t emphasize enough the importance of Mike Sullivan to the program.
If that name sounds familiar, it should (besides the fact he’s George Sullivan’s son). The assistant coach of the 2006 U.S. Olympic Men’s Hockey Team, Mike Sullivan also was the former coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins and, later, the NHL’s Boston Bruins.
“Mike has been a major component of the program,” MacDonald said. “His fingerprints, as well as mine, are all over it.
“In general, hockey is an exciting sport. Girls may be behind the boys, but they’re catching up quickly. We’ve had a few girls play college hockey. But our next generation of girls is clearly on the path to playing hockey at the college level.”

Anthony Chighisola's College Hockey Blog!
Anthony has given us his latest take on life in College Hockey.
It has been a fast paced and busy couple of weeks. Right now we have just started our second week of skating on ice and just had an exhibition game against SUNY Canton. The last two weeks of conditioning were really fun. We did more team oriented things rather than actual conditioning. Soon after we had to attend a guest speaker who talked about drugs along with how they can affect sports. Also they had another speaker come in and talk about alcohol. The last speaker to come in was our athletic director and he talked about how the team represents the school and we have to act like gentleman and think before we do anything on campus or off of it. Then we had tryouts in which we had 4 people cut and now are left with a team of 33 players. Our coach keeps stressing that if you don’t do the right things he has thirteen players waiting to get in the lineup. This is very true for in the first exhibition game one of our best players who is a senior and now is not in the lineup because he tripped someone and got a penalty. In college you need to learn that if you miss the trailer on a back check or take a lazy penalty, you will not play. Yes you will get an opportunity to play again, but may not happen for a while. Right now we are getting ready for our home opener this Friday. We are mainly focusing on penalty kill and a lot of line play during practices so we can cover our bases. Our power play had done really well in the first exhibition as we had 4 power play goals on 6 opportunities. As of now I am on first power play and the second line center which gives me prime playing time and I am pretty happy about that. This season I am really trying to focus on my defensive zone and trying to keep my feet moving. Well that is pretty much all for now…… Tony C.
I took the following from Anthony's bio on the Franklin Pierce website.

Anthony Chighisola's College Hockey Blog!
Anthony Chighisola has a follow up to his College Hockey Blog from 9/21. Notice that in the end it’s Academics that come first. Thanks Anthony for another great update of life in College.
Well these past two weeks have gone by pretty quickly. We started having captain practices twice a week. Along with that we had testing of our strength in the weight room. This pretty much shows who did the off season work outs along with who is the strongest player on the team in certain areas. We were tested in bench press, squats, pull ups, dips, and hang cleans. After this we picked up our morning work out running and it has become quite difficult. Right now we start off the day with a light jog and stretch into a dynamic warm up. Then we do either 10 three hundred yard sprints all under 56 seconds, or 20 one hundred yard sprints under 16 seconds a piece. Who ever finishes last must go again. These are pretty difficult and test you as a hockey player both physically and mentally. On the good days we will do team sprints which is great. This past week we got to play team freeze tag, and a game of soccer. The thing you have to remember is the more you do now has an effect on your season. If you put in the extra effort, then you will be rewarded. The coach always notices who finishes first and who seems to always be the one cheering on the other players. An example is the assistant captain on our team this year is not the most talented player in the world. However his effort and attitude towards the team and players is amazing. He is always the first one there and last to leave. Being a leader on a team is not always who is the best. It is who is the best at giving their all and being there for the team and not themselves. The last thing that happened this week was we had a team meeting with the dean of academics personally with the hockey team. She congratulated us on having the best team GPA on campus this past season and is looking for us to repeat this. When you go to college as an athlete you are a student first. Without the grades you are not allowed to play. Always remember that every coach will stress your studies first. Tony C.

Intorducing Anthony Chighisola's College Hockey Blog!
This is a new section that I have been trying to get going for a while. I have asked some former players of mine currently playing college hockey to write a once a week blog of sorts about their experience and dealings of balancing school work, social life and of course college hockey. Anthony is a long time player in the camps I have worked for the past 16 years and is currently playing at Division 2 Franklin Pierce. Anthony had a stellar freshman season leading the team in scoring last season. So I am glad to welcome Anthony's articles and I will post them on the website as they come in. Anthony's first article is below. enjoy. Coach J.
My name is Anthony Chighisola and I am a sophmore at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge New Hampshire. Today was the start of the pre season for our hockey team on campus. What we do is wake up around 5:30 and head over to the soccer field every monday, tuesday, thursday, and friday. Once at the field we do a couple laps around the field and then a dynamic warm up followed by stretching. Then after this we do about an hour and a half of sprinting varying from 20 yard sprints to 300 yard timed sprints. Also sometimes we play team building games just so we get to know each other as well as bond a bit. The best day of all the workouts is every friday because we usually play a soccer game or football game, or other team vs. team games. To go along with all the running in the morning me and a few other players actually lift on the same days as well as do a stick handling routine, lifting, and plyometrics routine at the school gym every day and that takes about an hour and a half to two hours. And yes i also attend my classes which are now set up as the following. Monday- 10-10:50, 11-11:50, 2-2:50 Tuesday- 9:25-10:40 12:15-1:30 Wednsday- Same as monday Thursday- Same as tuesday Friday- 10-10:50 2-2:50. The last two things that i am involved in on campus is that i work in the admissions office on campus as a tour guide and i belong to a club called PAC and this has to do with my major which is sports and recreational management. This is all what has gone on my first week of school. Well off to another workout, I will talk to you soon.

A very entertaining offensive game with many great opportunities saw Team Green drop their third game of the season to Team Blue. The two teams square off again next Wednesday for the league Championship at 7:20pm at the Bog in Kingston. Team Green got goals from Callahan Kent, Morgan Sharry and Molly O'Sullivan and an assist from Mackenzie Kent but couldn't hold off a strong offensive performance from Team Blue. End of the Line for a Hockey Legend?
I had to link this article up on my site for a reason that one of my all time favorite NHL defenseman is likely to hang up the skates after the Stanley Cup. I know all of you out there are wondering why Chris Chelios is one of my favorites, well in a nutshell while growing up NESN showed the Bruins home games and back then NESN was a pay channel, not good news for us hockey fans who could only afford basic cable, but Sportschannel (now the home of the Celtics) was a fairly new sports channel and showed a majority of the Hartford Whalers and Chicago Blackhawks games (plus it was a basic cable channel). I was a huge Blackhawks fan during the 80's and 90's and Chelios was the glue on those great Chicago teams of the 90's who always seemed to be battling for the Norris Division title with St. Louis and Detroit! Some of you young ones are saying Hartford? Norris Division? yes this is true! So below I have linked up a Yahoo sports story about the almost certain retirement of a future hall of famer.

With 8:14 to play NDA would take a bodychecking penalty and 10 seconds later would take another penalty. Milton had a 5 on 3 advantage for 1:20 and the Cougars penalty killers successfully killed off the 2 man advantage and the momentum started to build. Milton hung tough getting a few good chances turned away by Jackie Zais of the Cougars. With 1:30 to play Morgan Sharry fired a shot off of the Milton keeper and the rebound came right out to Emily LaRosa who netted the insurance goal for the Cougars. Boston Globe Article About NDA Ice Hockey!
http://www.boston.com/sports/schools/hockey/articles/2009/02/12/cougars_come_out_roaring/
At first glance, their record looks unspectacular. And during this time of year, when the buzz is about college commitments, they don't have any players attracting attention from big-name programs. They're anything but a marquee team. But the Cougars at Notre Dame Academy in Hingham are content to lurk in the background. For now."We lose six, seven, or eight games a year because of our schedule," said coach Todd Jacobson. "Then we get in the tournament and do some damage."As of Monday, they hadn't even qualified for the Division 2 state tournament, needing one win in their final four games to earn a bid. But the Cougars (8-6-2) have been playing playoff-style hockey for much of the season, and they know that in February, their experience pays."If we qualify every year, I know we've earned it," said Jacobson. "I know we're playing some tough teams."Take their win over Division 1 power Arlington Catholic on Jan. 29. Facing a high-powered offense, Notre Dame wanted to shut down the middle and freeze AC's most dangerous weapons. They also planned to shadow star forward Lauren Lapore, the highest-scoring player in Arlington Catholic history, and focused on their collective back-checking during practice."They like to use the home-run pass on the weak side when they break out of the zone. So we took a forward and put her on the weak side, forcing them to go through the teeth of the defense," said Jacobson. The execution was precise. The Cougars won, 5-2, holding Lapore to a single point. Before, they tied Catholic Conference power Fontbonne Academy, 2-2, and on Saturday, Notre Dame hung around with St. Mary's of Lynn, the state'sunbeaten No. 1 team, holding them to one goal until late in the third period before they cracked and lost, 3-0.Based on those games, and last year's tournament play, the Cougars are ready.Their unheralded crew is led by forwards Morgan Sharry, a freshman from Scituate, and senior captain Emily LaRosa from Weymouth (both tied for team lead with 25 points); defenseman Bridget Nestor (Duxbury), who has 11 points from the blue line; and senior keeper Jackie Zais (Braintree), who has put some early struggles behind her to come up with some big games, like her 36-save effort against St. Mary's. Her goals-against average is under 2.50."We've had to change our style," said Jacobson. "Last year, we could score at will, but our game suffered defensively at times. This year, we don't have a big offensive threat. Most of our offense comes from blue-collar-type goals."Tournament time
With two weeks to go in the season, the Cougars - assuming they qualify - are preparing to make a run in a wide-open Division 2 tournament field.

NDA Ice Hockey In The News!!
With a tie against Fontbonne on 1/24 and a win over Arlington Catholic the NDA Cougars are getting some quality press.
http://www.boston.com/sports/schools/hockey/articles/2009/01/29/walpole_is_rising/?page=2
Hingham looks strong
On the girls' side, Hingham looks like the team to beat in the Division 1 South race. Led by forwards Stephanie Invernizzi (27 points), sophomore Chrissy Bowler (26), and Steph Schlosky (25), the Harborwomen are 11-2 and have scored more goals (64) than any other team in the field. In the Bay State Herget, Wellesley (8-0-2, 9-1-3) has held off Milton (7-1-2, 9-1-2), and in the Carey, Braintree (7-3-2 overall) has two league losses, but has three-loss squads in Framingham and Needham nipping on their heels.
Fontbonne Academy is unbeaten in the Catholic Conference, but Notre Dame Academy of Hingham has just one loss. Lincoln-Sudbury should be a player come late February, and Newton North needs a strong push to stay afloat.
In Division 2, Duxbury (9-2-1) has been playing well and could meet Whitman-Hanson/Pembroke, Braintree, or Walpole in the late rounds. Look for Dedham or Shrewsbury to turn it on as well.

In girls action, Notre Dame (Hingham) picked up its first-ever win against Arlington Catholic, 5-2. Emily LaRosa had a goal and two assists to lead the Cougars. … All-Scholastic Rachel Porter is having another dominant season for Franklin, and her four goals and assist sparked the Panthers to a 6-4 victory against Beverly/Gloucester.
