Rob McCarthy selected to Umpire 2009 Junior Western Region Tournament
rmccarthy001
Centerville National Little League is proud to announce that League President, Rob McCarthy has been selected to umpire at the Little League Baseball Junior Division Western Region Tournament. The 2009 Junior Regional will be held in Aliso Viejo, California from August 4th to the 11th.

Rob is in his second full year as CNLL President, he succeeded Bob Slyter who moved to Idaho in 2007 –  incidentally, Bob, has been selected this year to Umpire at the Little League (Major Division) Western Region Tournament representing Idaho District 2. Rob joined the CNLL Board of Directors in 2004 as Player Agent and served in that capacity until he became President. Like many adults involved with Little League, Rob became involved when his two boys, Justin and Matt, signed up to play ball with CNLL. Rob served as their team's manager in their first year of play in the Farm Division. Rob continued to manage or coach his boys all the way through their Major Division experience. Participation in CNLL is now a family affair with the McCarthys. Rob's wife, Lauretta is the League's Auxiliary Coordinator, daughter Julie is in her second year as a player in the Farm Division, Matt is playing in the League's Junior Division, while Justin has followed his father's footsteps becoming an volunteer Umpire.

Early in his CNLL involvement, Rob started to Umpire games under the direction of League Umpire in Chief, Bruce Marcellus, who is currently the District 14 Umpire Consultant. As Rob's interest in umpiring continued to grow, he joined Bob Slyter and current CNLL Umpire In Chief, Frank Bontempo to attend Little League Baseball's Western Region weekend Mechanics Clinic in San Bernardino in 2004. In 2005 the trio returned to San Bernardino to attend the Little League Baseball Western Region Adult Umpire School. The week-long camp is an intensive training school covering rules and field mechanics. Rob and Frank repeated the attendance to the Weekend Mechanics Clinic in 2007, then returned in 2008 to the Western Region Adult Umpire School. Rob's knowledge, skills and work ethics caught the eye of the instructors and Region directors during the camps. Rob is one of CNLL's hardest working Umpires covering games in every Division of play. Rob is also a District 14 Umpire Instructor.

Selection to Umpire in a Regional Tournament is bestowed only to volunteer umpires in the Little League program who have a history of volunteerism as well as a high level of umpire proficiency. Rob certainly fits that description. Rob is the third Umpire with CNLL roots to be selected to Umpire at a Western Region Tournament, following Bruce Marcellus (2002 Little League Western Region Tournament, 2008 Senior League Western Region Tournament) and Bob Slyter.

The Western Region Little League Baseball Junior Tournament is a gathering of Junior Division All-Star State Champion teams representing eleven Western States - with California represented with a Northern and Southern State Champion. This 12-team tournament is played over an eight day period, producing a Western Region Champion. That team then heads for the Junior League World Series in Taylor, Michigan. By participating in the Western Region Junior League Baseball Tournament, Rob will be qualified to umpire in the Junior League World Series.

Congratulations to Rob! We are proud of our President, a well deserving person who is really dedicated to the ideals of Little League Baseball, and this huge achievement.

Bob Slyter Selected to Umpire 2009 Western Region Little League Baseball Tournament
rslyter001

Bob Slyter, former President of Centerville National Little League, has been selected to umpire in the 2009 Western Region Little League Baseball Tournament in San Bernardino, California. This honor is bestowed only to volunteer umpires in the Little League program who have a history of volunteerism as well as a high level of umpire proficiency.

Bob served as President at CNLL for the 2006 and 2007 seasons after serving on the CNLL Board as Vice President and Player Agent for many years. Bob's involvement with Little League started when his son, Tommy, joined CNLL and Bob did what many parents do - signed up to coach. Bob's coaching and managing career continued as Tommy played from the Minor Division through the Junior Division. As Tommy moved on to the Senior Division and above, Bob concentrated on his duties on the CNLL Board of Directors.

While Bob was coaching, managing and serving on the Board, he was also umpiring. Bob participated in District Umpire Training sessions and in 2003, made a big committment to umpire as many games as his schedule would allow. And so the journey really began. In 2004, Bob attended Little League Baseball's Western Region weekend Mechanics Clinic in San Bernardino along with current CNLL President, Rob McCarthy and CNLL Umpire In Chief, Frank Bontempo. In 2005 the trio returned to San Bernardino to attend the Little League Baseball Western Region Adult Umpire School. The week-long camp is an intensive training school covering rules and field mechanics. It was there that Bob really made an impression on the instructors and Region directors that probably led to his selection. Bob went on to instruct umpires in California District 14 as well as CNLL. Bob also continued to take on any game his schedule allowed, umpiring over 70 games in the 2006 season alone.

In April of 2007, Bob moved to Meridian, Idaho with his son, Tommy, and wife, Lisa. Bob immediately joined the local Little League program. It didn't take long for those in charge of Idaho District 2 to see what a quality umpire they had. Bob not only umpired in the 2007 Idaho District 2 Tournament at many levels, but also participated in the Idaho State Tournament. Bob repeated that feat again in the 2008 season. He is currently on the Idaho District 2 Umpire Staff serving as an instructor as well as umpiring as many games as he can.

The Western Region Little League Baseball Tournament is a gathering of Major Divsion All-Star State Champion teams representing eleven Western States - with California represnted with a Northern and Southern State Champion. This 12-team tournament is played over a ten day period, producing two winners: the West Champion and the Northwest Champion. Those two teams are then headed to Williamsport, Pennsylvania for the Little League World Series. By participating in the Western Region Little League Baseball Tournament, Bob will be qualified to umpire in the Little League World Series.

Congratulations to Bob! We are proud of our one-time President and this huge acheivement for such a well deserving person who is really dedicated to the ideals of Little League Baseball.

Little League Baseball Revises Rule 1.10 - Bats in the Junior Division

Little League has revised the rule for bats this year in the Junior (13 & 14 year old) Division. Bat diameter must now be 2 5/8 inches. Last year, the bat diameter could be as big as 2 3/4 inches. Below is an excerpt from the Little League website about the rule revision on bats. Please use this as a guide when purchasing new bats! And remember bats not within these specifications will be ruled as illegal equipment and removed from play. In addition to bat diameter, please be reminded of maximum length, weight and a BESR certification!

Rule 1.10 (from Little League website):

What is changed: Reduces the maximum diameter for a bat in the Junior League Baseball division from 2 3/4 inches to 2 5/8 inches. (Maximum diameter for bats in Senior League and Big League remains at 2 5/8 inches.)

All non-wood bats shall meet the BESR performance standard, and such bats shall be labeled with a permanent certification mark.

In all divisions, wood bats may be taped or fitted with a sleeve for a distance not exceeding sixteen (16) inches (18 inches for Junior/Senior/Big League baseball) from the small end. A non-wood bat must have a grip of cork, tape or composition material, and must extend a minimum of 10 inches from the small end. Slippery tape or similar material is prohibited. An illegal bat must be removed.

NOTE 1: Junior/Senior/Big League: The 2¾ inch in diameter bat is not allowed in any division.

NOTE 2: The traditional batting donut is not permissible

NOTE 3: The bat may carry the mark "Little League Tee Ball."

NOTE 4: Non-wood bats may develop dents from time to time. Bats that cannot pass through the approved Little League bat ring for the appropriate division must be removed from play. The 2¼ inch bat ring must be used for bats in the Tee Ball, Minor League and Little League Baseball divisions. The 2 5/8 inch bat ring must be used for bats in the Junior, Senior and Big League divisions of baseball.

You're Out!
The devil challenged St. Peter to play for the World Series.

"How can you win, Satan?" asked St. Peter. "All the famous ballplayers are up here."

"How can I lose?" answered Satan. "All the umpires are down here."
