Central Maine Youth Hockey Association: Squirts/Pee Wees/Bantams

Competitive A

MESHA has designated our area as section 4, combined with Augusta, Winslow, Skowhegan, and Mid coast.  Players seeking higher competitive levels are encouraged to tryout for these teams. Generally tryouts will be in August and those interested should check the State web page for more information.

Competitive B

The Travel program sometimes has been described as “Tier II” or “Competitive House” or Competitive B. These terms are confusing because USA Hockey and the Maine State Amateur Hockey Association recognize CMYHA as a “Tier II” Association. The Competitive League is composed of youth hockey organizations in Maine at the Mite, Squirt, PeeWee, and Bantam levels. The CMYHA will field teams at the Squirt, PeeWee, and Bantam levels if there is sufficient interest among our membership in those age groups.

The coaching philosophy of the Competitive B program focuses on developing advanced individual and team play skills. However, this statement does not preclude a coach’s discretion as to how the team players are used in certain situations.  Competitive B Team players are selected after a series of open evaluations and a tryout.  Coaches’ selections are based on players’ skills, attitude, and sportsmanship. Our coaches are committed to organizing a fair evaluation process. Questions about evaluations should be directed to the coaching coordinator. A player unable to attend evaluations due to an injury or a conflicting fall sport will be given an opportunity later, provided they notify the CMYHA Coaching coordinator, in writing, of his/her request for a late review prior to the first evaluation.

Players will be making a major commitment of time and energy to hockey during the season, which may run from mid October to late March. Once selected, players are expected to fulfill their commitment to the team for the entire season.

All Travel Teams at the Squirt level and above will participate in the State and National Tournament play as allowed by USA Hockey regulations. Note that there is no National Tournament for Squirts.

House League

The CMYHA House League consists of the following age divisions: Initiation Program (beginning players), and Mite Division through Bantams. Goals of the House League focus on providing instruction and playing hockey in a recreational environment. All children are offered the same opportunities and are treated similarly regardless of their abilities or the speed at which they learn. While scores are kept and games are won and lost, a strong emphasis is placed on sportsmanship. Players are divided into balanced teams. Player evaluation sessions may be held at the beginning of the season to assist in team assignments. These are not "try-outs," as every child will be placed on a team and will receive an equal amount of ice time.

Coaches and assistants are selected from the parents of House League players. Sponsors, managers and timekeepers are also needed for each team. If you are able to volunteer for any of these roles, please contact the Team parent coordinator or your coach.
