To all CMNLL family members and friends,

The Costa Mesa Parks & Recreation Commission held a public hearing on May 27 to discuss the School Fields Master Plans that the City/School/Community Joint Task Force has been working on for the last 18 months at a cost of more than $200,000 by the City of Costa Mesa.

The DRAFT concept plans can be viewed at

The decision by the District to delay a vote on the concept plans wastes valuable resources. This is simply the concept stage. The next stages will include a discussion and action take on issues such as funding, phasing, and design of detailed plans that meet the needs of the community and schools. The delay is unnecessary. What is the real reason?

Having a plan makes it easier to raise or apply for and raise the money. Without a plan--it's impossible. Many examples exist where the City has a plan and goes after funding.  There is a lot of stimulus money available right now to rebuild schools and create jobs.  Just recently, the JoAnne Street Bike Trail which will cost $300,000 was approved for funding through Federal Stimulus money.  Fairview Park is another example.  The City has phased the improvements and recently obtained several water quality bond grants to finally get the major restoration underway.  All of the City street improvement plans are design ready and the majority are paid for through Measure M grants when those funds become available so that the money does not come out of the City
General Fund.  There are numerous other examples.  At the School District, they have numerous plans in place that are not yet funded--the Magnet School as the most recent significant example.

The City understands the limited funding available to the School District, and has not asked the School District for a dime! The City of Costa Mesa has committed to have their Redevelopment, Public Services, and grant writing staff work to find grants, state bonds, and stimulus money to help pay for the improvements.  All the sports user groups and Costa Mesa United have committed to help raise the money through fundraising.  It will take time, but without the plan, no one can begin to find the money.  Costa Mesa and it's citizens deserves better.  Please spread the word and help us continue moving the Master Plans forward.
