December 9, 2011 - CMLA Board Places Emphasis on Coaches Sportsmanship

This past Sunday the CMLA Board conducted it's mid-season meeting.  A significant amount of the meeting was focused around Coaches Sportsmanship.  Over the first half of the season the league has experienced a number of situations of unsportsmanlike conduct by coaches.  Some of the issues have been...

1. Running up the score

2. Not following the rules (especially man-to-man defense rule in 3rd-4th grades)

3. Losing self control which has resulted in coaches ejections from games

These situations usually result in coaches receiving a technical foul.  All coaches need to be aware that one technical foul requires the coach to sit for the remainder of the game (this is a GHSA rule).  Two direct or three indirect technical fouls result in an ejection which also requires the coach to be suspended for the next game (the coach cannot be in the gym for the next game).  A coach who is ejected from two games during the season will be suspended from coaching (head or assistant) any team within the CMLA for that season.

The Board is encouraging all coaches to read the CMLA Coaches Sportsmanship document which has been posted under the CMLA Handouts section and to set the appropriate example for both their players and parents.

 December 4, 2011 - Location Change for Certain CTK Home Games on Dec 10, 2011 & Jan 28, 2012

Due to a gym issue at CTK the 6pm, 7pm and 8pm games on December 10, 2011 and 3pm through 8pm games on January 28, 2011 have been moved to Peachtree Hills Park Gym (308 Peachtree Hills Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30305 - approximately one mile from CTK).  The website schedule has been updated to reflect the game location change.

If your team was not scheduled to play at CTK during the aforementioned dates and times then these changes do not impact your team's schedule.

November 30, 2011 - Location & Time Changes for NDA Games on December 3, 2011

Due to a gym issue at Marist on December 3, 2011 all NDA games have been moved to Summerour Middle School in Norcross, GA (585 Mitchell Road).  Please check the schedule for your revised game time as the start time for these games has also changed.

If your team was not scheduled to play at Marist on Saturday, December 3, 2011 these changes do not impact your team's schedule.

November 20, 2011 - 2011 Sam Robb Memorial Holiday Classic (December 27 - 29, 2011)

Sam Robb, a rising athlete at Blessed Trinity Catholic High School, was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in 2002 at the age of 15.  After countless rounds of chemotherapy and surgeries, Sam's cancer was in remission.  However, due to the illness Sam would be unable to play the sports he loved.  Sam did not give up his dreams of being an athlete and changed his focus to other sports that could accommodate his new physical limitations.  Sadly, on June 25, 2007 Sam Robb lost his battle with an upexpected relapse of the cancer.

This tournament in its fifth year is a tribute to Sam, and his perseverance to be an athlete no matter the obstacles.  All proceeds from the tournament will benefit The Sam Robb Fund within CURE Childhood Cancer, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for childhood cancers.  The Sam Robb Fund has raised over $250,000 since incepton in 2007.

The tournament goal is to seed each team in a competitive bracket (communication of team's ability is required at registration).  Tournament Brackets will be determined on the number of entries -- combination of grades may occur if needed.  Invitation extended to CMLA Teams and Catholic, Christian organizations in the Atlanta Metroploitan Area.

October 23, 2011 - Commissioner's Message

On behalf of the CMLA Board, I would like to welcome you to the 2011-2012 Catholic Metro League of Atlanta Basketball season. We extend a special welcome to Transfiguration Parish who has joined the league this year bringing us to 15 member parishes and schools.

We have a new league motto this year, and we hope that the philosophy behind it will be lived out through all the participants of the league - coaches, players, officials, parents and spectators alike. Our motto is Build Character. Teach Fundamentals. Have Fun. This motto encapsulates what the league is all about. We want our coaches to teach and model virtue for their players. The season only lasts a short while, but the virtues we can instill can last a lifetime. My CMLA coach (Dan Schrage, former Army player and Bob Knight student) introduced me to the game of basketball in 1986 at St. Jude Parish. He taught me the fundamentals of basketball, but more importantly, he taught me life lessons about courage, self-control, faith, humility, and giving it my all that I’ve carried through beyond basketball.

It is our hope that your son or daughter will experience some of the same personal growth, learn to love the game of basketball, and have a ton of fun through participation in CMLA basketball this 2011-2012 season!

Andres Montana - CMLA Commissioner
