Thursday, August 14
Fliers Split Scrimmages

The Fliers split a pair of scrimmages this week starting with a fine 1-0 victory over Tiffin Columbian at Clyde on Monday, August 11 and then dropping an 8-1 game to a talented Lake Flyer team at Lake High School on Thursday.

Ethan Binger got the lone goal on Monday following up a rebound of a shot from Dustin Leasock. Leasock got the only goal on Thursday, taking a Trenton Hermes pass to the goal and shooting past the Lake goalie. Manny Rodriquez started the play with a nice pass to Hermes. Luke Salyers was tough in goal stopping 10 of 15 shots. Billy Heishman came in for the game's final 15 minutes and recorded two saves on five shots.

Jacob Norman had 4 steals in the Thursday game with Andrew Collins picking up 3 steals. Frank Alafita and Hermes added a pair of steals with Ethan Riehl, Justin Fritz and Rodriquez each recording a steal. Coach Tackett also mentioned the strong defensive play of Jacob Emery after the game.  Emery broke up a number of Lake plays by intercepting passes through the middle of the field.

Flier Drop Opener to Upper Sandusky

Upper Sandusky, Ohio - The Fliers 2008 season debut resulted in a 5-0 shutout at the hands of the Upper Sandusky Rams. The game was a scoreless tie until the Rams found the back of the net on their 10th shot of the game with 3:25 left in the first half. The hosts added a second goal with 1:43 left before the intermission. Three second half goals put the game away.

Luke Salyer was a bright spot in his goalkeeper debut stopping 20 of 25 shots on goal. Andrew Collins picked up 6 defensive steals with Justin Fritz adding 4 and Kyle Davis adding 4 steals.

Saturday, August 23
Fliers Settle for a Tie with St. Joseph Central Catholic

Clyde, Ohio - For the third straight season, the Fliers and Streaks have settled for a tie in their lone matchup. Clyde led 1-0 after Ethan Binger scored the first goal of the season on a deflection off of Dustin Leasock 15 minutes into the game. The score remained 1-0 at the break.

In the second half Leasock extrended the Clyde lead to 2-0 nine minutes into the half. Binger returned the favor of Dustin's first half helper with an assist on the second goal. Paul Wendt brought the Streaks to within one on a goal set up by Chris Wobser with 12:19 left in the contest. The Streaks got the game tying goal with just 3:30 left.

Luke Salyer stopped 10 of 12 shots on goal. Jacob Emery had 5 steals. Andrew Collins, Dustin Gregory, Jacob Norman and Binger each added 3 steals.

Salyer Picks Up First Shutout of the Season in Tie at Edison
Luke Salyer Earns First Shutout

Milan, Ohio - Luke Salyer stole the show in his third game in goal for the Fliers by stopping all 14 shots in a scoreless tie against the Edison Chargers. Unfortunately for Salyer the goal support was not there to pick up a win. The Fliers managed six shots on goal, all handled by the Charger keeper. The Fliers record stands at 0-1-2 heading into the Thursday game with Port Clinton.


Thursday, August 28
Three Games Slated for Bishop Stadium
The Fliers will play three home games on the new turf at Bishop stadium this season.  The first will be August 28 against Port Clinton.  The Fliers will also test the turf in games with Sandusky High School on September 9 and against the Huron Tigers on September 25.  There will be a $5 admission charge for those three games.

Thursday, August 28
Port Clinton Shoots Down Fliers
Clyde, Ohio - The Port Clinton Redskins topped the Fliers by a 5-0 score under the lights at Bob Bishop Stadium on Thursday night.  A penalty kick goal with 5:19 left in the first half gave Port Clinton a 2-0 lead and they never looked back. Despite being outshot considerably, the Fliers still managed to trail just 3-0 behind superb goaltending by Luke Salyer until the Redskins blew the game open with 11:20 to go.  They added their final goal with just 2:25 left.  Salyer made 12 saves in the game.  Kyle Davis made 4 steals and added 2 clears.  Jacob Emery recorded 7 clears.

Wednesday, September 3
Huron Tops Fliers

Huron, Ohio - Luke Salyer entered the Flier Soccer record book by stopping 26 shots on 32 Huron Tiger shots through the first 70 minutes of a lopsided 9-0 game at McCormick Middle School. He broke his own record set in the first game of the season against Upper Sandusky.  His second save of the game was a tremendous diving stop on a penalty kick after forward Ethan Binger picked up a yellow card in the goal box in the second minute of the game. The save kept the game scoreless for the moment. Despite being outshot 32-2 through the first 70 minutes the score was still just 6-0 when Salyer was given the much needed rest. Ethan Riehl finished the last 10 minutes and made 3 saves on 6 shots.

In JV action Garrett Binger scored the lone goal on a direct kick from the left side that sailed into the upper right hand corner of the Huron goal. Billy Heishman made 13 saves in goal.

Fliers Shut Out Bears for First Win

Clyde, Ohio - The Fliers beat the Margaretta Polar Bears 3-0 on Thursday afternoon to earn their first win of the season and improve to 1-3-2 (1-2-1 SBC). Trenton Hermes' goal less than two minutes into the contest would prove to be the game-winner. Dustin Leasock assisted on the goal. The score remained 1-0 at the half.

In the fifth minute of the second half Sahen Fultz picked up his first career goal to extend the lead to 2-0. The goal was set up by a pass from Andrew Collins to Ethan Binger who centered the ball to Fultz who was making a nice move up the middle to the goal. Binger added his own goal at the 30:53 mark of the second half with Hermes assisting to make the score 3-0. Coach Tackett was able to sub freely in the second half which got a total of 21 players into the game.

Luke Salyer and Ethan Riehl combined for the shutout in goal for the Fliers. Salyer stopped 7 shots until he was hurt and forced out of the game with 4:21 remaining. Riehl stopped the only shot he faced in the final minutes to preserve the shutout.

Collins picked up 4 steals in the midfield with Jacob Emery adding 3 of his own from his defensive position. Emery also recorded 5 clears. Kyle Davis made 2 clears and added a steal.

The Fliers held a 14-8 shot advantage for their best offensive outing of the season. Clyde had another 10 shots that went wide of the goal.

The Fliers next host Sandusky on Tuesday, September 9 in non-league action at Bob Bishop stadium. Game time is 5:00.

Sandusky Streaks Past Fliers
Clyde, Ohio - The Sandusky Blue Streaks came into town and took a 7-0 win at Bob Bishop stadium.  Luke Salyer stopped 12 of 17 Streak shots with Billy Heishman coming into the game with 11 minutes left and stopping 2 of 3 Sandusky shots.  Andrew Collins recorded 4 steals.  Jacob Emery had 2 steals and 2 clears.  Jacob Norman had 3 steals and a clear with Dustin Gregory and Kyle Davis getting a steal and a clear each.  The Fliers fall to 1-4-2 on the season following the non-league loss. 

Thursday, September 11
Pirates Prove They are an SBC Elite Team
Clyde, Ohio - The Perkins Pirates continued their program's dominance over the Fliers, posting an impressive 8-0 shutout on Thursday evening under the lights at the Flier Soccer Complex.  Luke Salyer recorded 9 saves in the contest.  Defensively Kyle Davis had 6 clears, Jacob Emery had 4 clears and 2 steals, Andrew Collins recorded 3 steals, Dustin Gregory 2 steals and Jacob Norman a steal and a clear.  The Fliers conclude the first round of SBC play next Tuesday at Oak Harbor. 

Tuesday, September 16
Fliers Downed by League-Leading Oak Harbor

Oak Harbor, Ohio - The Fliers surprised the SBC leading Oak Harbor Rockets by scoring the game's first goal.  Unfortunately for Clyde, the goal awakened the sleeping giant as the Rockets then rattled off 12 goals to run off with a 12-2 league win.  Ethan Binger got the early goal less than 3 minutes into the contest on an assist from his brother, Garrett Binger.  The Rockets would then score 9 straight goals, including the tying goal about 8 minutes into the game. 

Ethan got his second goal of the game in the second half on a nicely developed play that started with a pass from Kyle Davis to Dustin Leasock.  Leasock passed up to Binger who hit the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.  Davis and Leasock each notched an assist on the goal. 

The goal marked just the third time in Clyde soccer history that a player has scored more than one goal against one of the elite teams in the SBC.  Brian Shafer scored two goals against Oak Harbor in August 29, 2006 and Alex Binger got two against Port Clinton on September 28, 2006.

Luke Salyer and Billy Heishman split time in goal with Salyer stopping 9 of 16 Rocket shots and Heishman picking up 5 saves on 10 Oak Harbor shots.

Defensively, Jacob Norman recorded 4 clears, a steal and a blocked shot.  Dustin Gregory also had 4 clears.  Andrew Collins had 3 midfield steals and Lucas Eubanks added a couple steals as well.

The JV team dropped a 5-0 game with Heishman stopping 3 of 6 first half shots and Ethan Riehl getting 6 saves on 8 second half shots.

Thursday, September 18
Fliers Get Second Win

Clyde, Ohio - The Fliers moved into 5th place in the SBC with a 2-1 win over Edison on Thursday afternoon. The game remained scoreless until Andrew Collins got his first career goal for the Fliers with 12:30 left in the first half. Ethan Binger and Trenton Hermes picked up assists on the goal. With 20 seconds left in the half the Fliers were called for a foul in the box and Edison was awarded a penalty shot. Sam Bores hit a low, hard shot to Fliers Keeper, Luke Salyer who made a terrific diving stop to preserve the lead. Then with just 4 seconds left the Chargers were called for a penalty in front of their keeper and Clyde was awarded a penalty kick. Kyle Davis' shot sailed just wide of the goal on the left side and Clyde lead 1-0 at the break.

Midway through the second half Binger got an unassisted insurance goal which proved to be the game winner. The Chargers made it interesting by scoring with 3:42 left and the Fliers killed off the remaining time to get the win. Salyer ended with 7 saves on 8 Charger shots. With the win Clyde improves to 2-6-2 on the season, 2-4-1 in the Sandusky Bay Conference.

Kyle Davis lead the defense with 7 clears and 2 interceptions. Dustin Gregory had 4 steals and 2 clears, Andrew Collins 4 steals and a clear, Justin Fritz 3 steals and 2 clears, Jacob Emery 2 steals and 2 clears and Jacob Norman had 2 steals an interception and a blocked shot.

Special thanks to the Clyde HS Cheerleaders who delivered snack bags to the team before the game. The boys sure enjoyed them....and the snack bags too.

The Fliers travel to Port Clinton on Tuesday, September 23 for a Parent's Night contest at True-Lay Stadium in Port Clinton. Admission is free according to their website. Tuesday, September 23
Redskins Scalp Fliers

Port Clinton, Ohio - The Port Clinton Redskins topped the Fliers by a 10-1 score on Parent's Night at True-Lay Stadium.  Port Clinton ran out to a quick 3-0 lead before Ethan Binger scored his 6th goal of the season on a penalty kick with 16:26 left in the first half.  The Redskins reclaimed the 4 goal lead less than one minute later and led 4-1 at the break.  The second half was all Port Clinton as the Redskins outshot the Fliers 16-0 and found the back of the net 6 more times.

Kyle Davis recorded 2 clears and a steal before getting hurt late in the first half and sitting out the rest of the game.  Dustin Gregory and Jacob Norman each had a blocked shot and 2 clears .  Justin Fritz and Trenton Hermes had 2 clears each with Andrew Collins picking up a steal and a clear.  Luke Salyers made 14 saves on 22 Redskin shots through the first 67 minutes of the contest.  Billy Heishman stopped 2 of 4 Port Clinton shots in the last 13 minutes.

Clyde falls to 2-7-2 overall and 2-5-1 in Sandusky Bay Conference action.

The annual Clyde Soccer Banquet will be held on Monday, October 20 in the Clyde High School Cafeteria.  More details will be available later, but please hold that date in your calendars.

Thursday, September 25
Huron Mauls Fliers

Clyde, Ohio - The Huron Tigers took a 6-0 lead at the intermission and cruised through a scoreless second half to top the Fliers.  There was not much offense to speak about but there were some great defensive efforts by the Fliers.  Justin Fritz recorded 6 clears, blocked shot, a steal and an interception.  Andrew Collins had 5 steals and a clear.  Lucas Eubanks had a blocked shot and 2 clears.  Jacob Norman recorded 2 interceptions and 2 steals and Kyle Davis added a clear and 2 interceptions. Luke Salyer made 6 saves in goal for the Fliers who fall to 2-8-2 overall and 2-6-1 in the SBC.

Tuesday, September 30
Binger's Hat Trick Leads Fliers to Third SBC Win

Castalia, Ohio - The Fliers improved to 3-6-1 in the Sandusky Bay Conference with a 5-2 win over Margaretta on Tuesday. Ethan Binger recorded a hat-trick in the game scoring three goals. Binger now has 9 goals on the season. Trenton Hermes assisted on all three goals. Each performance tied individual Clyde Soccer records. Brian Shafer scored 3 goals in a single game twice in the 2006 season, each against Edison. Caleb Cleveland got 3 assists against Woodmore in 2006 and Zach Wott earned 3 assists in a game with Edison also in 2006. Dustin Leasock also earned an assist on Binger's second goal with Kyle Davis getting an assist on Binger's third goal.

Andrew Collins got his second goal of the season when he scored an unassisted goal with 1:24 left in the first half. Leasock scored a goal of his own, also his second of the season, with just 6 ticks left on the first half clock off an assist from Binger. Jacob Norman also assisted on Leasock's goal.

Davis had 4 clears, an interception and a steal. Justin Fritz recorded 2 blocked shots and 2 clears. Jacob Norman added 2 steals and 2 interceptions. Ethan Riehl played in net for the Fliers and stopped 8 of 10 Polar Bear shots. Margaretta's first goal was on a penalty kick in the first half.

The Fliers are off on Thursday and host Seneca East on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m.

Saturday, October 4
Fliers Top Seneca East for Fourth Win

Clyde, Ohio - The Fliers improved to 4-8-2 with a 5-3 win over Seneca East. Ethan Binger got things going early for Clyde when Trenton Hermes hit him with a pass which he put in the back of the net less than 4 minutes into the game. After the Tigers knotted the score at one each Binger got his second of the game, unassisted, just past the midpoint of the first half. Seneca East scored 2 goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half to take a 3-2 lead at the break.

Hermes made it a 3-3 game when he scored with 29:55 left in the game. Binger and Andrew Collins assisted on the goal. Binger would pick his third goal just before the mid-point of the second half with Dustin Leasock getting the assist on what would prove to be the game winner. Binger got an insurance goal with 7:03 left. The goal came off a free kick from Trenton Hermes to Garrett Binger who made a shot which Ethan re-directed into the goal. With the goal Ethan set a single game scoring record for Clyde, the single season scoring record with 13 goals and his 18th career goal broke Brian Shafer's previous record of 17 goals in that category. With 7 assists on the season, Trenton Hermes tied the single season record in that category. Congratulations guys!

Ethan Riehl played in goal and recorded 6 saves. Dustin Gregory had 5 clears. Andrew Collins recorded 2 steals, an interception and a clear. Kyle Davis made an interception, blocked a shot and had 2 steals. Jacob Norman had 2 clears, 2 steals and an interception. The defense held Seneca East scoreless in the second half.

Monday, October 6
Fliers Draw Genoa Comets in Sectional Play

Toledo, Ohio - The Clyde Fliers will face the Genoa Comets in a first-ever meeting when they play in sectional tournament action on Monday, October 13 at Toledo Central Catholic High School.  The Comets are the third seed in a very tough sectional and currently hold a 10-2-2 record.  Toledo Central Catholic and Eastwood were the top two seeds.  Oak Harbor at 9-3-2 was seeded fourth. 

Last season Genoa was sectional and district champs before falling to Napoleon in the first round of the "Sweet 16".  Earlier this season they defeated the Oak Harbor Rockets by a 2-0 score in what has been described as a very even game.  Game time is 5:00 p.m.

Tuesday, October 7
Pirates Pull Away from Fliers with Late Goals

Sandusky, Ohio - The Perkins Pirates scored 4 goals in the last 12 minutes to pull away from the Fliers for a 5-0 win.  Clyde played an impressive first half holding the Pirates to just one goal on 8 shots and continued to frustrate Perkins until they finally put an insurance goal on the score board with 12:26 left in the contest.  That goal opened the floodgates for 3 more late goals. 

Luke Salyer made 15 saves in the game.  Andrew Collins had 2 steals, 4 clears and an interception.  Kyle Davis had 3 clears and blocked 2 shots.  Justin Fritz and Manny Rodriguez played well in defensive roles.  Fritz recorded 6 clears and a steal with Rodriguez adding 5 clears and steal and an interception.  Jacob Norman blocked 2 shots and had a steal and a clear.

The Fliers fall to 4-9-2 on the season and complete the regular season hosting Oak Harbor in a must win for the Rockets if they wish to win the SBC.

Rockets Claim Share of SBC Crown with Win at Clyde

Clyde, OH - The Oak Harbor Rockets took care of business to get a share of their first SBC Championship by downing the Fliers 8-0 on Thuresday night.  The game got away from the Fliers quickly as Oak Harbor scored twice within the first 3 minutes of the contest.  They would not score again for nearly 20 minutes, but did find the back of the net 3 more times in the first half to lead 5-0.  They would score 3 more times in the second half.  Bright spots for the Fliers were the consistent play of Luke Salyer in goal and the defensive play of Justin Fritz.  Salyer recorded 14 saves with Fritz picking up 7 clears a steal and a blocked shot.  Andrew Collins added a steal and 2 interceptions.  Dustin Leasock had a steal and a blocked shot. Jacob Norman managed a clear and an interception.

Salyer now has 176 saves on the season which is a team record and 36 more than Benjamin Defays recorded in the 2007 season. 

The Fliers finished the regular season at 4-10-2.  The 4 wins tied the 2006 season as the most wins in a season by a Clyde Soccer team.  The Fliers were 3-8-1 in the SBC which was good for sole possession of 5th place. 

Clyde now moves to tournament action where they open with the Genoa Comets on Monday, October 13 at Toledo Central Catholic High School. 

Monday, October 13
Fliers Bow Out of Tournament

Toledo, Ohio - The Clyde Fliers were caught on their heels just 10 seconds into the game with the Genoa Comets and never recovered.  They fell by a final score of 10-1 and complete the season at 4-11-2.  Ethan Binger got the only goal of the game for Clyde with 15:48 left.  The goal assisted by Justin Fritz and Andrew Collins was his 14th of the season and made the score 8-1 at the time. 

Luke Salyer recorded 10 saves in goal for the Fliers.  Kyle Davis made 6 defensive clears and Jacob Norman recorded 6 steals, 2 clears and an interception. 

Monday, October 20
Awards Handed Out

Congratulations to all the players who received awards at tonight's soccer banquet. Coach Acocks recognized the junior varsity players who received certificates or numerals. First, second and third year varsity awards were handed out by Coach Tackett.

Coach Tackett then recognized the players who received All-Conference honors. Recognized as 2nd Team All-Sandusky Bay Conference were Kyle Davis on defense and Ethan Binger on offense. Andrew Collins, Justin Fritz, Trenton Hermes, Dustin Leasock and Luke Salyer were recognized for being named to the Honorable Mention, All-Sandusky Bay Conference team.

The special awards given out by Coach Tackett were to Luke Salyer as the Defensive MVP, Ethan Binger as the Offensive MVP.

Kyle Davis received the Coach's Award for his leadership and dedication to the development of the program. Sahen Fultz also received a Coach's Award recognizing him for his contribution as a first year player and his potential for future contribution to the team.

Senior Captains, Ethan and Kyle presented the coaches with autographed, framed photos.

The crowd then watched a Power Point show created by Mrs. Melanie Boyd which featured action photos of all the players and honored the senior players. Mrs. Boyd also gave out personalized photo packets of each player. Thank you Mrs. Boyd!
